We all know that the battery on Google N5 is not *that* battery, so it would be great if an extended battery for our devices came out.
Mugen Power said that we are likely to get it somehow. They are concerned on a fact: internal battery on N5 means no more warranty. Anyway they want to see how many of us are interested in this, so that they will evaluate the possibility of doing this...

Does it mean, that I'll need to open up my Nexus 5 and exchange the battery? Does anyone have a good link to somewhere on how to change a battery inside Nexus 5?
It will be great
Looking forward to that ...

Main issue would be there are tons of stuff on the back cover - antenna for Wifi, GPS, NFC etc, and the vibrator. A bigger battery that has useful capacity increase will be bigger and will need a new back cover, so it not going to be cheap to replicate all those features unlike the back of a S4 that is all plastic.
Using their S4 battery as an example, the version that is the same physical size give 6% capacity increase - 2750mAh v.s. 2600 mAh. Same increase for an N5 don't seem worthwhile to me unless the old one is dying and I am looking for an replacement.

Here, it takes 2 minutes
Wow. Yes. I would absolutely buy this IF:
The kit cost less than $70
Comes with a quality replacement back (read: not a cheap one)
Comes with a quality case (again, not a cheap rubbery one)
Most importantly: Keeps the phone slim!
That last one is crucial. I don't want a fat phone. A 3000mAh battery would be worth it to me and shouldn't feasibly add that much bulk.

Your points are good but... I meant a battery that doesn't need any replacement case/back, just a extended battery of the same size. I would buy it even to gain 300 mAh

I think what you're asking for is probably impossible without losing some type of functionality like NFC (if NFC is integrated into internal batteries like it is external batteries for many phones).
You can't just magically make more room for a bigger battery, and I'm sure the technology the battery in the N5 is based on is standard for consumer phones (probably lion or li-poly).
I'm sure if you could have easily shoved a bigger battery into the Nexus 5's chassis they would have. I imagine the G2 has a bigger battery because of a different internal layout and different chassis.

Honestly I don't really know how theese kind of things work. Aren't manufacturer able to optimize (just a little bit, of course) capacity/space rate?
I think yes, but they keep away from doing this because of marketing and so on...
What ever they come out with it has to be better then the nexus 4 case that they made as well as the one zero lemon made

If it's possible to get a battery with substantial gains and still allow the stock cover to be used, I'd be very interested.
I'm just skeptical that's possible.

Any idea if they could keep the back cover and add in a 4 side extension between the front and the back to make room for the battery?

I bought the same kind of thing for my X10 and loved always having a spare battery on hand. So I got a package for the Arc as well.
I gave the batteries the full charge/discharge cycle and they perform just as good as the original battery Also comes with a USB port and an extra Micro USB cord.

Got it from eBay and it was very affordable.
And... yes I watermarked the image so some douche doesn't steal the image to use

I got it for just $9.98 US + $2.99 for shipping. Cheap IMO, but they have more auctions. It came with a free capacitive pen thing, but I don't care for it.

That is quite cheap. How are you finding the batteries though? Usually cheaper ones usually only have around 80% of their specified rating.
On an unrelated note, last night I actually found out what the word "douche" means. Quite funny

If that.
There's also the potential problem of them not being manufactured with the same quality control etc, so being more at risk of swelling, bursting, over-heating and generally destroying your phone in some sort of horrible burn-y acid-y way...

Ye, I wouldnt be able to put in a battery like that in my beloved Arc.
I just hate turning off the phone to change the battery.. Imagine the phone can run without a battery for some seconds
larger batteries are better, but you can't find original larger batteries so you have to depend on 3rd party makers...
I'm thinking about Mugen Power batteries now thought they don't have Arc compatible batteries yet... the nice thing about these is they provide larger capacity ( and also bigger size ) but they also make the back cover that can hold the new bigger batteries and they make a lot of them for variety of phones... just take a look at their site !
http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/
I've looked at Mugen before.
If they release a larger battery for the Arc with a cover that basically fills in the concavity (ie makes the back flat), I will have to give serious consideration to it - if it's a reasonable bump in capacity that is.
If the replacement back were to bulge though, I would rather have shorter battery life and a slinkier phone though...

Well, there are crappy ones and good ones. I have used them (aftermarket) in my X10 without any problems whatsoever, so if you don't trust them then don't buy them. Don't whine and complain about something if you have not used it yourself.
I know what happens if you plug your device by USB all the time, it will break! When it happens to you, you will start a thread to complain about it and I will be here laughing
with all my devices ive purchased a cheap hongchong battery charger with spare chinese battery's. Originally the batteries are as good but after time they dwindle, thats fine though they cost bugger all.
Ive never had issues with swelling, overheating etc but I do not have a habit of overcharging things.
Ive used these style batteries in my diamond,hd2,g1,magic,n1,desire and soon the play.

If I want a second battery I'll go for original batteries... but I hate changing the battery ( infact I hate turning off the phone then turning it on again, and what I hate more is adding another battery to what I'm already carrying !! )
that's why I prefer larger batteries, sadly SE and most other manufacturers don't offer these, specially SE for the Arc as I know SE response will be ( larger battery will be larger physically and this will require modifying the back cover to be larger and this will destroy the design of Arc !! ).. I'm okay if that battery will just make the back cover flat, I can live with that... but I can't live with carrying another battery and the hassle of changing the battery...
Each to they're own I guess the one minute to change battery and reboot far outweighs having to place the phone on a charger.. I don't carry a spare its just if I'm at work its 4 pm and my battery is low I don't care because one minute after I'm home its 100% again...

By the way the watermark doesn't stop people from using your picture. If I have to I can remove it within three minutes and no one will notice it was there, but most people don't know how to do so or prefer searching for another picture to use for their own benefit... Best and only way to keep your pictures to yourself is not putting them on internet

Yeah, but such a large watermark takes time to remove. Removing it and reposting my image gives me all the proof I need of malicious intent. That would allow me to sue the violators ass off. I have caught people before and claimed damages from them, copyright law is on my side because I have that watermark on there in the first place

For $10 that's a really good deal, even if they only last a couple of months
So I've seen a couple of eBay auctions for 3800mAh GNex batteries. I can't post the URLs here as links because I'm a too new here ( :-( ).
The price is right and the promise of 2x the rather modest battery life of the 1750mAh battery in my GSM GNex is hard to resist.
What does everyone think?
It will double the thickness of your Nexus, and has a cheap (and probably) non-ergonomic back cover.
I wouldn't it get as it has no NFC (Near Field Communication) antenna in it. Also, most of those cheap Ebay batteries are not rated as advertised.
Try it and get back to us. I'm trying the 2300 and 1900 mah GSM cheapo batteries from ebay and getting back to the community afterwards

Yes - that's one of them. Do a search for i9250 3800 and you'll be able to find the other.
Admittedly the back case doesn't look as nice as the stock one, but what I'm really worried about is my phone exploding in my pocket and injuring me. Or at least destroying my $600 phone.
This manufacturer has had a lot of similar units for various phone models.
I had been using a version for the Samsung Infuse 4G with no issues for 4 months or so, so I would expect the same for the Galaxy Nexus variant.
One thing to keep in mind however: these batteries DO NOT have the NFC Antenna in them, so you will not be able to use Google Wallet or the Android Beam options.
These batteries are actually are from a Droid Charge. I read it one galaxy nexus and i have tested it myself. There are some Droid Charge 3800mAh battery with good reviews you. But you still will need a back cover and will have NFC.

$11.89 for cover & battery seems fair for 3,800 mAh:

Just be aware that all batteries are not created equal, especially from china. Surefire batteries, specifically 18950 batteries used in high end flashlights. They just put a new shrinkwrap and recharge old batteries. Good or bad, it dont matter at least they look new. They advertise 3000mah, youd be lucky to get 2 of 10 that are 2000mah.

Well, given the price, I'd have to say it's going to suck, but then again - it's not that much money to try it - if you really need something that huge.
I would try it, but I'd rather wait for a package that comes with a case. In the end it's a $725 device that I don't want ding'd.
After trying a lot of these batteries on most of my phones over the years, I say that if it aint sold by the phone manufacturers, save your time and money.

I'd say give it a try. those are generics. back in my multiple battery craziness days, i had 2 of those same generics for my Thunderbolt. they were ok.. at least they actually worked anyway. didn't use them long enough though to comment on longevity.

Yeah, I know what you mean about multiple battery craziness lol. I have two generic batteries for my Thunderbolt AND a huge Seidio extended battery along with my OEM. The generics work just as well as the OEM.
Generally any battery for your smart phone under $40.00 probably isn't rated at what it says it is. I've managed a fairly good collection over the years. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to them.

I am looking to keep my white GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus naked as the bulk is just too much, and I need as much comfort in my hand as possible...
That being said: does anyone want to chime in on how the Mugen extended battery is performing compared to stock and/or the original Samsung /w battery door?
I have the original samsung extended battery, but no white door to put on...
Thanks guys.
One thing to note if you are buying a replacement battery... the NFC antenna is built into the battery. If this is a feature you use, make sure your new battery has it.

Both will give you about 80% of the capacity they put on the label. Everyone else will give you much less than that, 70% tops, and often half or less.
I think these cheapo $10 3800 extended batteries on ebay are pretty good if you come in with the right expectations.
Yes, we know they aren't 3800, and are closer to 3000, but that still gets you about 1000mah more than the stock battery.
Yes, they lose their capacity over time more quickly than a genuine battery, but you should treat these types of batteries as disposable.
Buy one for $10, use it for 6 months and then buy another one.

Could I trouble someone to measure the thickness of the Seidio 3500 for GSM? Looking to get one, but want to see if I can do a little modding to fit it in a case without using that unsightly back door. From the comparison pic above, it seems to be a hair over double the thickness of stock battery. Correct?
I love travel, especially remote area. I want a great phone with long lasting battery. Nexus 5 is a great phone, but battery only last less one day under moderate use.
So I made a extended battery, the capacity is about 8000mah, 3.6 times of the stock battery:

I am waiting for the 3D printed back cover to finish this project. According to my test, under normal use, this phone can last 3-5 days with one full charge. The charge time is about 5-6 hours. My wife love it too, I am making another one for her. She asked me why don't mass produce it and sell?
The only thing about this extended battery is the complexity. Like other recent cell phones, Neuxs 5 put NFC, wireless charging coil, antennas and vibrator on the back cover. So to make this extended battery work on Nexus 5, beside the 8000mah battery. I also designed NFC Coil, Wireless Charging Coil, WiFi Antenna, GPS Antenna, and a vibrator. All these components adds up the cost. The retail price may reach $70-80.
I started this battery as a hobby. Is here anybody like my design, and think I should mass produce it? Will you upgrade your Nexus5's battery to 3.6 times for $70-80?
Yes!!!
At that price? Yes, really just depends on the bulk added
-guess
Looking good! 8000mAH is a lot of juice. How much bulk (in term of thickness and weight) is this going to add?
This is a great idea, but way too big. If you made one with a 2000mah battery I'd be all over it. Good luck!
I would take one for that price.

God damn!! I wouldn't mind using it, ingress destroys my battery.
Sheesh that's a lotta juice!
Looking forward to seeing that cover and how the phone looks after juicing
How about adding a MicroSD slot, I'd imagine you could graft it onto the usb port somehow... I never understood why nobody does that.

Technically, MicroSD slot is doable with the usb port, but we may need to cut off the data wires of the usb port. I haven't tried that yet. Don't know if the SD card and USB data can be connected at the same time to the PC / Mac.

Thanks Everybody for the supports. I am glad to see you guys are interested.
I worry most about this mod is the installation part, since Nexus 5 is not deisgned with a removable battery. Please let me know if the following installation is suitable for most of users:
1. We need to take your nexus 5 apart to take the original battery out.
2. Install the small battery of the extended battery and plug in the connectors.
3. Install the circuit board which connects the vibrator, antennas and coils.
4. Flip the large battery back to cover the small battery.
5. Connect the coils on the large battery to the circuit board.
6. Snap the extended battery cover on. (Coming Soon).
Please let me know how do you guys think about the installation part.

About the thickness: according to the 3D file, the thickness is about 17.5mm. I think it's okay.
The last phone with extended battery I used is HTC Sensation XE, with the extended battery is 18.5mm for only 3800mah
The thickness of galaxy s5 is even thicker: 21.4mm for 7500mah (With this thickness, we can make about 10000mah for nexus 5).
The thickness of s4 is 17mm for 6400mah
OMG like really this would be awesome could you post some pictures of your phone with the inserted?
And ps be sure to ship outside the US too
The worst of Nexus 5 is the battery...
This "mod" its awesome! I cant wait to see the Nexus 5 ensambled with the 8000mAh battery!!

I'll Buy
this is awesome. Though i would prefer something along the lines of a 3000mah battery, just so its that much thinner
This looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Just perfect
This would be soooooo good. The installation doesnt look hard and you are getting 8000 mAh. Ridiculously good.
Waiting to see that final image with the printed back cover.
I will buy it
This is very good work you've done. But it is a very niche product. Not many people are willing and able to disassemble their phone. Fewer of them own a Nexus 5. Fewer of those want a bigger battery and will ever learn about your product. And fewer still will swallow the price.
I encourage you to charge as much money as you need to, so you can make up for the low sales volume. Don't short-change yourself. This looks like a $100+ kit to me. Maybe you can hold a group buy, massdrop-style, where the price falls as more people commit to buy.
I'd definitely pay for it, well worth the money! but would want a bulky case to fit it lol.
Easily $100 or more wouldnt pay more than $150!
Like he said it's something only certain people would buy and be able to fit it properly, well I would!
I would love to have that battery power but i'm afraid that thing will ruin camera performance.
An extension battery pack can't add any thickness where the camera sits, otherwise it will impact on camera
If it's not bulky, I don't mind paying up to $100-$150. It would be nice if you can make the size smaller and fit it inside.
The battery of my nexus5 is aged and I need to replace it.
However, I cannot buy any usable Nexus 5 battery (all are fake batterys selling)
The original battery consists of a pcb and the lithium polymer battery core
Neither can I buy a "lithium polymer battery core" to replace because lithium polymer battery core of similar size I can find has just half of the capacity.
I am thinking about getting a similar size lithium ion battery, remove the pcb and solder with the pcb of the original aged battery.
Does it work? is that dangerous to do so?
Lithium ion battery is 3.7V and lithium polymer battery is 3.8V
Thanks for advise

This is the one i got and i don't know if i got lucky but it is working sweet, just like when i first got my phone, i would give it a try if you have 9 dollars to spare.

If you want my advice on batteries (I've done quite a bit of battery hunting), the only place I know of that sells ORIGINAL batteries for the Nexus 5, is this site from Portugal (it carries all kinds of replacement parts for a wide variety of LG products):
http://www.spareslg.com/bateria-telemovel-lg-d820-nexus-5-eac62078701.html
I ordered from them a couple of months ago and I can personally vouch for the authenticity of the battery.
Furthermore, there are a couple of ways to check for the authenticity of a battery. First of all, obviously it has to have the original LG stickers on the front. Then you want to look at the back.
If it looks like this, it is genuine.

If it looks like this (notice the Samsung branding), it is a FAKE. (edit - you will also notice that these batteries are slighlty narrower and thinner than the originals)
Secondly, after you install the battery, you want to check the temperature reading of it. If it stays stuck at 29 Celcius, then it is a fake (this happens because the fake ones have a counterfeit pcb board with a non functioning temp monitor). On the other hand if the battery temp changes with usage, then it is genuine.
I sincerely hope this post helps someone in the future.

The funny thing about that is the battery that I took out of my Nexus 5 had Samsung printed on it, and I bought that phone from Google. The first replacement I bought from eBay had the same back as that first photo and I had to send that back because when doing something intensive, the phone would just shut off and you had to plug it into a charger to turn it back on.
Well I find this kind of hard to believe, but anyway you can always check if the battery has a working temp monitor. Thats ultimately the only way you can be certain.
I bought a battery recently and it had samsung on the back, but the temp of the battery is always 29c so the plot thickens.
I bought this battery from amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LD7S6YQ
It's not OEM, it's was made made by BELTRON and manufactured on Sep 15, 2015. It say it's 2300mAh, however because the battery is smaller than OEM I think the capacity is lesser.
With all that say, the battery is performing quite well. I have had it for over 2 weeks and my phone is performing like it was when I first got my Nexus 5.
Cataclysm with Elemental 6.04 Kernel.
Idle 3% down after 8 hours.
I get about 2 hours 30 minutes of SOT.

It doesn't have to say LG. My Nexus 5 came with a Samsung-made battery inside it.

So to put this to rest, genuine untampered N5s have ONLY LG made batteries inside them.
If there is a Samsung cell in it, then I'm sorry but there's something else going on.
Also if you check the Samsung SDI site, the cell in question (PGF445560) only has 2,050mah max capacity. Which is well bellow the 2,300mah standard for the N5.

Please cite your source that N5s must have LG cells in them. I bought my device directly from the play store so there is no tampering involved. I only figured this out today when I replaced my original battery with a new one.
I cannot provide you with a source, but apart from the fact that
a) LG make their own batteries
b) the Samsung cells are narrower and thinner
c) have lower capacity and
d) lack a working temp sensor
I don't know what else to tell you. But then again I'm just a random guy in the internet, so YMMV.
OK, guys I've been following the conversation and here's my story.
I bought a OEM original advertised battery from eBay, seller with great feedback, big selling history of over 100+ units.
Initially I was happy with the new battery no problems.
But only now when I read about the temp. monitor, noticed I received an impressively well made fake battery, lacking temp sensor, compared to my original one.
Non-existent QR code as well.
Here's my comparison below, uploading the pics for max resolution.
To sum up - they've done a good job here but used different font as you can see. I've marked some of the differences below.
Hope that helps!
