I know I am a senior member of XDA but I am not a developer at all. Please don't blame me for the questions that will follow. I tried looking through the threads and Google but I can't find straightforward answers.
So here they are:
1.) I am still on Android 4.3 waiting for the update. I am rooted, have TWRP recovery and have stock odexed ROM. Let's say the 4.4 update arrives and I want to update. Can I update with the custom recovery?
2.) Some people say that after rebooted in TWRP, nothing happens. Then how can I know where the OTA .zip file is located and...question 1.) again.
3.) Let's say the update went fine and I know that root is lost. Could I have saved it before the update using something like root survive method?
4.) If not, then it means I need to reroot again. How can I reroot WITHOUT using the PC? (Please don't ask why I don't use the PC)
I am not a total noob, just these questions are unanswered for me. I have a HTC One X too and from that I know updating with custom recovery is not possible and needs stock one. My Nexus 7 is just not like the HTC.
Thank you for reading, hopefully someone can answer. The answers can be short but I should understand.

No, yes no answers?

Ok, I think I know the answers
1.) Yes
3.) I just need to reflash the Super SU through custom recovery
4.) Answer 3.)
Question 2.) Hopefully someone can answer, where is the location of the OTA download, I heard in some kind of cache folder....?

I'm not nearly an expert so you should search the general forum section. Try searching "twrp ota 4.4"
1. If you have a custom recovery, you'll get the OTA download, but it won't install. You have two choices, either install the OTA from a downloaded file or restore the N7 to stock recovery.
2. There are several threads with a lot of good information in the general section. I had TWRP installed and followed the instructions on the last update, it worked without a problem. I've since rooted but use the stock recovery. I'm waiting for v4.4 and once that's loaded I'll decide if I want to go back to a custom recovery.
3 and 4. No idea. I've seen various discussions here and other web sites so check Google. I don't recall seeing a way to root without a PC for the N7 but I have seen it with other devices.

i just want to ask if anyone can answer me?
i have a rooted yakju JB 4.1.1 JRO03C, with installed CWM touch, can i still receive OTA updates from google, when updates are again pushed later on?
You will receive the OTA. but will not be able to install since you are not on Stock Recovery.
You could however get the google OTA update link(will be updated in this thread Thanks to Efrant ) and use Clockwork mod's install zip from sdcard to install the update(remember to delete recovery folder inside the archive,to maintain CWM mod).
And you are done!

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
You can easily just flash back stock recovery using fast boot or toolkit by getting the stock recovery image from the downloaded ota jb update zip when the time comes to update if you need to go from cwm back to stock recovery.

Open the ota update zip on your gnex wherever you have it stored on your phone an delete the recovery folder in it using es file explorer or whatever file manager you use, then apply the ota update zip with cwm so it doesn't install the stock recovery an just keeps your existing cwm recovery when your next update.
Hello i have a problem and i where just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same think..
When i want to do the ota update it downloads it fine no problem, then it restarts and says installing update, afterwards it says update failed with no futher explanation.
I have been trying to do it five times or so..
The update is called: x9006_12.A.05_INT_005_140605
I have root if that makes any difference.
Do you have a find 7a (X9006) or find 7? Have you installed a custom recovery? Why don't you install the ColorOS 1.2.1i stable? If you're not at stock recovery flash it and retry!
Cheers

This update is basically the same as ColorOS 1.2.1i. Just flash 1.2.1i. Another thing you can try is re-flashing your recovery. That seemed to fix it for me. And I too, have root.

Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster.
Please don't kill me if my questions are somehow dumb. I promise I searched the web and xda thouroughly before posting.
1) I rooted my phone with HTCDev.com for the sole purpose of installing titanium backup. I tried to unintall some unwanted bloatware (scribble, tv, twitter, zoe, fitbit and more...) but they keep returning after boot. Why is that? Is it related to S-on? Is there a simple way to fix this?
2) My current software version is 1.54.707.7, I can update OTA to 2.22.707.3. Should I? From my experience with my previous samsung device, I'm afraid that updating blindly can cause more harm than good at some cases.
3) Can I update OTA even when I'm rooted? Will I need to replace the recovery and root again?
Thanks in advance,
Tal

Hi Tal,
ok let's see if I can help you a little bit.
Regarding (1) I got a question: where and which files of the named apps did you delete?
Regarding (2) Sure you could update vis OTA as long as all system apps and stock recovery ist installed. Did you reinstall stock recovery, or are you unsing some custom recovery? As with custom recovery you can download but not install the OTA. This can then be done even if you are rooted. If you use supersu having the pro version installed you could try activating OTA survival mode and maybe root acces will still be there after performing the OTA. If not you could simply reinstall a custom recovery and using this root.
Hope this helps!?
If you could give me some answers regarding (1) I'll try to help ypu with this as well.

Thanks for the detailed and fast response, Yoda!
Regarding (1), I'm not sure I understand what you mean "where and which files". I backed up the mentioned apps in titanium backup, and then uninstalled them, again, with titanium backup. This method worked for me on my previous device (Samsung i9300).
Regarding (2), that's valuable information that I did not get anywhere from reading the sticky posts. I didn't know that the original recovery is needed in order to update OTA. I installed TWRP in order to install SuperSU. Is there a specific version of stock recovery that goes with the device? Or is there just one stock recovery for m8?
I had another question hidden in there, I'll make it number 3:
(3) Can someone tell me if the 2.22.707.3 version is any good? Stable enough? Or should I stick with 1.54.707.7 in the meanwhile?
Thanks allot!

(1) there are two folder /system/app and /system/priv-app. And overall there is the rw settings of the new kernel used. To be abled to unistall unwanted system apps maybe take a look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723463, as maybe you need another kernel to accomplish it.
(2) you have to use a corresponding recovery, meaning you would have to download the 1.54.707.7 recovery (just google for it and you should find it in any forum) to work.
(3) I'm sorry that I can't be of any help here, as I performed an S-OFF debranding my phone and changin the CID to HTC__102 right from the start, setting it up to be on the WWE 2.22.401.4 since then.
3) the newest update (2.22 one) is very stable for me, no problems at all.

1) HTCDev unlocks the boot loader, it doesn't root. This can delete some default system apps, preventing an OTA. In order to have changes to system stick after reboot you need a kernel module: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51543139
2) Don't worry, HTC are much better with updates than Samsung. They work, you can trust them.
3) Once you have unlocked boot loader, you may struggle to update OTA due to the missing apps, but there are threads here explaining what to do. As mentioned, you'll need stock recovery and yes, you may need to root again, after installing your custom recovery after the update.

Thanks for all the valuable info!!
I tried searching for the recovery, but as always, it's not that simple.. Too many sources of information and I don't know who's genuine. I haven't found a link on XDA yet (to the full stock ROM yes, not for the recovery only).
You say that OTA is a hassle when the recovery is replaced. I'm not stressed on upgrading OTA. How WOULD YOU SUGGEST to upgrade? Downloading the newest stock from XDA and using fastboot?
I created nandroid backups before but never restored one, so JUST TO BE SURE: this backup will be the full snapshot? Meaning: my old version (if the new one sucks) + apps + data? I don't need to backup ANYTHING except doing a nandroid backup?
Thanks again.
Tal
UPDATE: dug around some more and found the stock recoveries here after following the link from this post.
But before I flash anything, I just want to make sure that:
1) The nandroid I'll do in TWRP is the only backup I need to do.
2) There is no simpler option than returning to stock recovery, updating OTA, returning to TWRP recovery, rooting.
Tal
To Root your P8000 stock you just need to install SuperSU from Playstore, it works out the box
Playstore -> SuperSU (cant link)
Download -> INSTALL -> ROOT no more steps needed
My, that easy.?
Does this mean that the bootloader is unlocked?
I've got an Huawei Honor 3x Pro G750-T20 which todate is still unrootable because the damn bootloader is locked
i.e that is why I'm getting this device.
Just waiting for delivery which I hope would be soon.
And thanks for the headsup.

you have to install the su binarys and libs from recovery.
otherwise it can not work with only installing supersu.
with the stock recovery you can not install it. you need cwm or TWRP for it. that means you must root the phone with the flashtool
after that all is done you can install the supersu.zip in recovery and root it

There are several people here who claim they've rooted the phone simply via installing SuperSU directly from Google Play (the ”normal” way - no pun intended). With both the stock and the newer (OTA or otherwise installed) firmware.
I'm not yet sure how that is even possible, but it might have something to do with what another user said, that the official ROM appears to be pre-rooted - as evidenced by his banking app (Barclay's) and despite any other bench-marking apps.
I have yet to receive my device (one more week or so until arrival), but that's definitely what I'm going to try first.

As it's impossible to start SuperSU without ROOT on the phone we can take for granted that some P8000 has been delivered pre-ROOTED...
Mine wasn't, but i tried the suggested out of curiousity and of course it did NOT work
I just installed SuperSU on my P8000, it asked for something or other that was recommended for HTC phones? I just clicked 'Normal' and it installed OK, then asked for a reboot.
Looked in settings after reboot and it says 'Superuser is enabled'. Does this mean that my phone is now rooted?
How can I tell?
Thanks
I also only installed the SuperSU App via Play Store and it works like a charm. I can run Titanium Backup and all other stuff that requires root with no problems. I am running the stock rom 20150725.
I also just downloaded SuperSU as the OP suggested and surprisingly it worked! I dowloaded root checker as well and a prompt showed up asking for root permission.
Awesome!

Hi I would like to root/flash my HTC one M8 phone.
But I don't know where to start as I've never "unlocked", "rooted", "flashed", "s-offed", "twrped" before. As you may have guessed I have a limited understanding of the correct usage of the terms used above lol.
I am already subscribed to the HTC one M8 forum but it seems this page doesn't get much traffic and I am already subscribed to the sub thread relating to the Canadian HTC One M8 (as I have Canadian Rogers device), but it seems that doesn't get much traffic anymore either... hopefully some kind soul can guide me towards unlocking and flashing my phone. Thanks for reading!

Hi thanyou for taking the time to reply!!! So before I read your reply I took the plunge found some videos on how to unlock my HTC one M8. Tried an all in one unlocked, got a virus my PC because the all in one unlocker was old and now compromised; but indirectly I learnt and understood now a little more of the world of rooting... Still not perfect understanding but better than before lol
ok so I managed:
Step 1 (HTC development unlock process)
Step 2 (using TWRP)
But...I did this before I read your reply and installed SuperSU instead of Magisk.
How can I remove SuperSU and install Magisk can I just go into the TWRP and install Magisk or do I have to do a full wipe from TWRP and then install Magisk?

Getting into the world of rooting and android modifications is hard, but if you get it, you'll be pretty much set for any other device with a little of reading. Part of the reason I posted links where you have to read and find it yourself is to encourage doing all the job youself. Going the easy way often isn't good, like the all in one unlocker as you experienced.
Anyway, there's really no issue if you installed the supersu - both will give you root, the difference is magisk also can hide root, so for example you can still use google pay or other apps that can't be used while rooted, also it has modules.
If it's only root that you want supersu will do the job too.
If you want to uninstall it then this zip should do it - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ap...ersu-v2-05-t2868133/post63615067#post63615067 , full wipe would be the recommended way though.
Also, remember to do backups, you never know what might go wrong.

Always make a TWRP backup of the stock ROM before rooting (or other mods like custom ROM, etc.). I know the previous user didn't say to do that. And many guides also don't mention it. But it is mandatory best practice IMO.
If you had a TWRP backup of the stock ROM, another way to "unroot" is to simply restore that stock ROM backup.
Also, be careful about doing a "full wipe". Doing so would not by itself unroot the device. And if you really mean "wipe everything" including system partition, then you would have no OS installed!
