How to update to 4.4 with TWRP? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I rooted my tablet and installed TWRP end of august.
Two days ago I installed 4.4 with an OTA update which broke the phone, it always booted into recovery. I learned that TWRP was incompatible with 4.4 older versions of TWRP might cause problems with 4.4 and flashed the 4.3 factory image using adb. The tablet is now working again.
I'm just not sure how to proceed now. It seems the TWRP recovery is gone, because from Fastboot when I select recovery I get the dead android with the red triangle. Can I just update by following this post?

Where have you read twrp is not compatible with 4.4? Many people are using twrp with 4.4. You should use the latest version which supports SELinux security contexts.
It is probably easiest if you just flash the KRT16S factory image from that thread.

It doesn't seem to happen for everybody, maybe it's older versions of TWRP. Mine was from August. I rephrased my original post to make that clear. There are some threads here about the problem and if you google for it you'll find some more warnings. It's always the same thing, the tablet will only boot into recovery after an OTA with TWRP:

Thanks for your reply though, so I'll try flashing the factory image. Should I use adb for that or newest TWRP? Also the red triangle means my custom recovery is gone, correct?

Personally I think it is easiest to flash the factory image but you probably need around the same number of steps either way.
The factory image is meant to flash in boot loader using fastboot, not using adb.
The fallen android means you are using stock recovery. It is an image that hides the recovery menu. press/hold power, press/release VolUp, release Power to see the actual recovery menu and any errors which might have occured

Thanks again, all worked well going along with your guide. Only thing to do now is getting TWRP and SU flashed.
It seems like I'm not really up-to-date anymore when it comes to flashing, I only knew of using recovery and never heard of sideload or using fastboot to flash any images.

Can't revert back to stock recovery, and other questions

Hello,
I am having some trouble reverting back from TWRP to Stock Recovery to do an OTA update to the 5/30 update. Whenever I flash the recovery in TWRP, it fails. Another problem I had was, when I was in stock recovery (before jumping to TWRP), I tried doing the OTA update, but when the phone rebooted to perform the update, it would stop half way and reboot back into the OS and no change would happen (even though it said "Updating ColorOS". Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If you don't want to flash recovery via fastboot, use flash tool from play. Then try updating again.

Thanks a lot man! I will surely give it a try tomorrow.
Man, I used your recovery flasher to install the recovery, but it still doesn't let me install the OTA. It boots into recovery and nothing happens. When I reboot the phone, it says updating, but when I check for OTAs, it still says to install the update.

That's odd. You could try this recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53065486&postcount=84
It's official TWRP except it's modified to report the device as "FIND 7" (just like stock recovery) so it can flash stock ROMs/updates. I doubt the stock recovery uses open recovery script so I doubt you'll be able to initiate the flash via the settings menu. However you could try to install the OTA manually. I think the zip is placed in /sdcard/ota or something like that. I sent my Find 7a in so I can't verify the correct path.

Even when I use the zip, it gets like 1/4th of the way done and then says "installation failed"... Kind of frustrating.

Maybe check if the OTA is available for download here or on Oppo Forums with an MD5 so you can verify integrity. If not you could delete the .zip and redownload via software update. If all else fails you could switch to ColorOS 2.0 beta or try Gummy or Omni. I personally hated colorOS however I feel that 2.0 beta is actually more stable with less bugs.

I already tried it, but even that failed.. Color os didn't install either.
So no one has an idea on why I can't install the Ota? Even tried unrooting and trying the Ota that way, but it still failed. Even if I use recovery of color os to flash the Ota without root, it still fails. I don't know what else to do... I want to get Ota in case they update to 4.4 kitkat...
I fixed it.

[Q] Very strange recovery issue

I just received my Nexus 7 2013 16gb WiFi from amazon a few days ago, and it's been great. The recovery has had issues though, it tried to do an OTA update the first day I got it, and when it rebooted, it just stayed on a black screen instead of actually going to recovery, so I had to hard reboot it, to get back to the jellybean it came with. This wasn't a major issue at the time, since then I've just unlocked it and flashed kitkat via fastboot (I'll get lollipop once it has gravitybox or something similar). But since then, I've rooted it and installed TWRP, and TWRP runs fine, but has some weird issues. It seems to not actually see the OS at all, or even the storage filesystem. I have to do a hard reboot to even get out of TWRP, as trying to get out normally gives me the error "Warning blah blah no OS installed, are you sure?", to which I tell it I'm sure and it just reboots recovery. But doing a hard reboot boots into the OS just fine. Am I doing something wrong? TWRP was installed AFTER I installed KitKat and the updated bootloader with the official google factory images, is this a problem?
Some images of what I'm seeing:

Maybe it's because you're running TWRP 2.8.2.0 which is for Lollipop. If it doesn't work with 2.8.1.0, try with the lastest 2.8.2.2. Running Lollipop at least, everyone had the same problem with both 2.8.2.0 and 2.8.2.1.
where can I place the recovery image where twrp will see it?
Thanks for your suggestion LittleConfucy. I was wondering if you can tell me where to put recovery image that TWRP can see it?
Flashing is a problem without being able to access the image to flash in the stripped down rom file system that twrp boots into. No shared directory in /cache.
Nevermind I got it dialed in.

Can't get into Recovery and getting "Security Error" on boot.

I was running Lam Hoang 2.2 just fine on my D850 and then decided to update TWRP from 2.8.6.1 to 2.8.7.0 (released yesterday). I downloaded the right one. I couldn't get it to flash (using the TWRP app or Flashify) and it kept giving me the secure boot error message at the top left of the screen when trying to go back into recovery (it was booting fine, though).
From the TWRP thread, the app creator posted their app AutoRec (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=b007.autorecd850) and I downloaded it, installed, and ran. It worked. I updated TWRP from within recovery and rebooted...and now I'm in trouble
I can't get into recovery (getting the secure boot error message again) and the phone won't boot normally anymore. I'm getting the LG logo with the words "Security Error" in bold beneath the logo: http://k36.kn3.net/ED11C35D9.png
Thoughts? Did I just brick my phone?

I ran into the same issue when i tried to flash the .img file through TWRP.
If you manage to boot your phone normally the you can use the imageprep method to bump the new TWRP version and flash it using the imagepregui. I managed to get 2.8.7 working using this method.
Same Problem "Secure Error"
So my friend I did the same thing as you did and I got stuck and now I cannot use my phone but I may need to go back to stock and then root and get back to AOSP.
I am thinking of maybe there is a recovery.img in the .TOT file and a Boot.img to flash and we may have our phones back in no time, Just maybe.

Very possible, but only if you have access to a method you can flash using (such as if you had removed laf and have fastboot)
I believe imageprep makes a backup of your previous files and stores them on your computer even.
But if you can't get into fastboot then you may have to do a factory kdz image

I am thinking of flashing the files with LG Flash Tool and maybe it will work as i will be extracting the Kitkat TOT file and restore to stock but only flashing the recovery and boot image.
It's possible, I can never get the dang flash tool to see my phone so I can't offer much guidance on that.
I'm thinking the TWRP folks uploaded a non-BUMP'd recovery image to their website...because now 2.8.7.0 is missing from their site and it was definitely there yesterday when I downloaded it: https://dl.twrp.me/d850/. Maybe they never BUMP their images?
I posted in the TWRP thread when it first happened and @bender_007 (maker of AutoRec) reminded me about restoring to stock via download mode and helped me get it back to stock. When I flashed TWRP last night after doing the stock KK > root > install recovery > upgrade to LP process, I used TWRP from @777jon's thread: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=22377
So yeah, if you're like me and tried updating TWRP using the image from the TWRP site and borked your phone, I'm betting the only way to unbork it is to restore KK stock via the TOT.
Confirmed, it wasn't bumped(while the 2.8.6.0 was)

TWRP bootloops

I've seen this problem mentioned in a few threads but not seen any definitive fix.
My current install :
Stock NPD35K system, vendor, bootloader
Xceede's v8.01 kernel
TWRP 3.02 v6.0
Encrypted data partition
I currently get bootloops every time I boot into TWRP. After using TWRP and attempting to reboot it will then bootloop into recovery refusing to boot the system.
I have found it can be fixed by rebooting into fastboot and the "fastboot reboot" command. But this is frustrating if I don't have a laptop handy.
This happens every time I need to boot into recovery to install or update via TWRP. Is anyone else getting the same bootloops and has anyone found a permanent fix?
Thanks guys.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Hi Jake,
I had exactly the same issue since NPD35K except the fastboot reboot solution did not work for me.
What i could find was that if you flash the default vendor, recovery and cache partition via fastboot and then put off the tablet, it should after all of this boot correctly to the system.
Cheers,
Mathieu
You are not alone ..
I had the recovery bootloop once myself.
I did the "fastboot reboot" command and since then the Pixel C is booting fine again.
Did several installations afterwards .. no problems anymore.
Just once ..
But if you get it every reboot this a real problem.
Right now I am not able to help you .. just don't know the root cause and how to fix it.
As it looks like, it helps if you go back to stock recovery, like mentioned above.
I can not confirm this .. as I don't have the problem.
Good luck !
Thanks for the advice guys.
As I said it only bootloops immediately after boating into TWRP (even if I don't install anything), if I reboot from system it's fine.
At the moment I prefer to keep TWRP installed and reboot from fastboot if I need to use TWRP. I don't see an advantage to installing the stock recovery. It would be great to pinpoint what's causing this though.

I'm still getting this TWRP bootloop. I've tried several versions - 3.0.0, 3.0.21, 3.0.23. I've tried numerous times re-flashing stock using NRT and then flashing the recovery again. I've also tried fastboot-reboot.
I'm on stock 7.1.1 - NMF26H. If i need to install a different version for this to work I can do that.
Is there perhaps some particular version of TWRP that everyone but me is using? Or are there some specific versions of other files that I also need to flash along with TWRP? From what I've read if I get past this once that's probably it.
Thanks

Pls install latest bootloader and latest factory image via fastboot, manually.
Pls use latest fastboot binaries from Google.
Pls install 3.0.2-23 via fastboot as well.
Reboot directly into TWRP and not into system in between.
Install SuperSu.zip v2.79 in TWRP.
Reboot into system.
The first time the system will boot twice .. it's normal.

Maybe your problem is related to the tool itself
For this reason I recommend to use the official google fastboot tool for complete flashing of factory image including bootloader.
To have a proper base to continue ..
Good luck !
EDIT: .. no need to wipe data here. Just a fresh system, vendor, cache and boot image from factory image.

I think that answers my question - the original factory image including the bootloader.
I'll try it in a few hours. Thank you very much!
That worked! I was currently on stock 7.1.1 so I tried it first without re-flashing, although I was prepared to go back to that step if it didn't work.
First I downloaded SuperSU 2.79 and copied the ZIP to my device.
I used Minimal ADB and Fastboot (which I think is taken from the official Google source) and flashed recovery-twrp-3.0.2.23.followmsi-ryu.img.
Then I rebooted into recovery - not system - and flashed SuperSU.
Finally I rebooted into system.
The Google logo appeared for a moment and then it booted again (exactly as you said.) Then it booted normally.
Finally! Thank you very much! Hopefully this will help someone else too. It can be the smallest detail we miss that makes the difference.

Nexus 5X bricked trying to root via TWRP (SuperSu)

Hi,
Googled a while and looked around in the forum but did not find anyone with the exact same issue as me so here goes.
Maybe someone could tell me where exactly I am doing wrong.
I have a LG Nexus 5X, latest Oreo 8.1 official update.
I want to install a custom kernel to improve performance and/or battery life.
Never rooted or anything like that so I googled around to know what to do.
So I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the latest TWRP custom recovery (v3.2.1-0).
The first strange thing unlike what I kept reading in tutorials and forums is that, although I did reboot directly into recovery after flashing TWRP, and completed flashing TWRP using its interface, I was never able to reboot into TWRP unless I flashed it again. As if TWRP could not avoid being overridden by the stock recovery. So to get back to TWRP I always have to:
reboot into the bootloader: adb reboot bootloader
flash TWRP: flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-0-bullhead.img
reboot bootloader: fastboot reboot
immediately start into to bootloader (power + vol down)
choose 'Recovery Mode' from there
Which seemed odd, that TWRP wouldn't 'stick', although I was not root yet.
Which gets me to the second part. All I wanted was to root my phone.
So after not finding a consistent way to do it - it seemed every website I visited gave me slightly different instructions to do so, I took the chance and did the following:
download latest SuperSU flashable zip file (v2.82) and copy it to internal storage
go through the process I describe in the list above to get into TWRP
install SuperSU zip file (via Install TWRP option, logs seemed ok, warned me it would take a while to boot again)
reboot, wait until it boots
But the phone got stuck in the boot screen - OS does not start to load - for at least half an hour.
Luckily, probably because the OS did not load, TWRP was not overridden and so I have access to it.
My main problem at this point is that, as a newbie on this, I am not sure what can I do in TWRP to try to restore the OS.
I have tried to restore a Nandroid backup I performed before all this, and also tried to Wipe Data / Cache and Dalvik.
Both did not work - OS still won't load.
What can I do at this point? Wipe System partition? Wouldn't that delete my Nandroid backup?
Maybe 'sideload' (not sure if the right term) an official google image for my Nexus?
Sorry again if questions like this can be easily found around the forum, but from the threads I checked I did not bump into the exact same scenario...
Thank you in advance
So in the meantime I have wiped system partition, no success either.
Ended up restoring my Nandroid backup and sideloading the latest OTA from Google, which successfully restored my phone.
Of course TWRP was overridden once again.
So back to the start: can anybody help me out on the best way to permanently flash TWRP and root the phone?
Thanks!
Forget SuperSU - Use Magisk to root your phone. As for TWRP getting overwritten - any time you take an update from Google, it will generally (if not always) restore the stock recovery. The way to get around that is to download the entire current update from Google and then use fastboot to flash the individual parts (system.img / boot.img / radio.img / vendor.img)

Well yes, the last time I expected TWRP to be gone since I have applied the whole image, and I wouldn't expect otherwise. My problem is that TWRP is always getting overridden each time I reboot my phone. Do you have any idea why?
Regarding Magisk, I will look around to see how to use it. Could you point me in the right direction?
Also I think I read somewhere that the kernel I wanted to flash in the end - Franco's Kernel - required SuperSU and did not work with Magisk. Am I wrong?

Well yes, the last time I expected TWRP to be gone since I have applied the whole image, and I wouldn't expect otherwise. My problem is that TWRP is always getting overridden each time I reboot my phone. Do you have any idea why?
Regarding Magisk, I will look around to see how to use it. Could you point me in the right direction?

Here's the guide stickied that should walk you through the TWRP install. https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206930
Just curious you are using "fastboot flash recovery ....." and not "fastboot boot recovery...."? The "boot" method doesn't do the install.
As for Magisk. There is a whole forum dedicated to it - https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk - Short story install the latest stable version (16.0) and call it good. I haven't had any issues with recent kernel builds including Franco, EX, etc.... One thing to keep in mind is that Magisk always gets flashed after the kernel install as it does some patching of the boot.img as part of its process.

Yes, flash, not boot.
Thanks a bunch for all your help. I didn't meant to be lazy to start by reading sticked topics, but it's so much new information for a newbie that I didn't exactly know where to start. Thanks again for sharing the links.
I'm not sure if you got this fixed. But if not, first fastboot boot twrp. Then flash supersu or magisk. Then boot back into the bootloader from twrp and fastboot flash twrp. That'll solve the problem.

I tried that but I'm getting no luck with SuperSU, always gets me in a bootloop (actually, technically not a loop since it remains Frozen with the Google logo)
I'll give magisk a try and come back with feedback. Maybe it has something to do SuperSU incompatibility with Oreo 8.1..

What version of super su are you using? Use 2.82 SR 3 or 5

V2.82 Stable, not Service Release. Is the last stable not compatible with Oreo? Official website is not specific about it, so I just assumed it was ok.

3 or 5 work on Oreo. I'm not sure about stable. I don't use it.

SR5 worked like a charm. I just wish there was a compatibility matrix somewhere in their website to avoid so many forum threads and misinformation on the subject and avoid all the hustle. The whole process is dead simple but it took me days and tailored help from you guys to figure this one out.
Thanks again to all of you for your assistance.
i had that issue with a nex 6 and flashing supersu fixed it. when i got a 6p i tried the same and get stuck on the boot logo and had to sideload factory firmware to get back to go. i have a 5x on the way maybe i will try magisk.
so after i flash twrp reboot the bootloader, i open twrp and flash supersu sr5 and all is well, no more disappearing act for twrp and no more stuck on the "google"?
