Can't get into Recovery and getting "Security Error" on boot. - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was running Lam Hoang 2.2 just fine on my D850 and then decided to update TWRP from 2.8.6.1 to 2.8.7.0 (released yesterday). I downloaded the right one. I couldn't get it to flash (using the TWRP app or Flashify) and it kept giving me the secure boot error message at the top left of the screen when trying to go back into recovery (it was booting fine, though).
From the TWRP thread, the app creator posted their app AutoRec (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=b007.autorecd850) and I downloaded it, installed, and ran. It worked. I updated TWRP from within recovery and rebooted...and now I'm in trouble
I can't get into recovery (getting the secure boot error message again) and the phone won't boot normally anymore. I'm getting the LG logo with the words "Security Error" in bold beneath the logo: http://k36.kn3.net/ED11C35D9.png
Thoughts? Did I just brick my phone?

I ran into the same issue when i tried to flash the .img file through TWRP.
If you manage to boot your phone normally the you can use the imageprep method to bump the new TWRP version and flash it using the imagepregui. I managed to get 2.8.7 working using this method.

Same Problem "Secure Error"
So my friend I did the same thing as you did and I got stuck and now I cannot use my phone but I may need to go back to stock and then root and get back to AOSP.
I am thinking of maybe there is a recovery.img in the .TOT file and a Boot.img to flash and we may have our phones back in no time, Just maybe.

Very possible, but only if you have access to a method you can flash using (such as if you had removed laf and have fastboot)
I believe imageprep makes a backup of your previous files and stores them on your computer even.
But if you can't get into fastboot then you may have to do a factory kdz image

I am thinking of flashing the files with LG Flash Tool and maybe it will work as i will be extracting the Kitkat TOT file and restore to stock but only flashing the recovery and boot image.

It's possible, I can never get the dang flash tool to see my phone so I can't offer much guidance on that.

I'm thinking the TWRP folks uploaded a non-BUMP'd recovery image to their website...because now 2.8.7.0 is missing from their site and it was definitely there yesterday when I downloaded it: https://dl.twrp.me/d850/. Maybe they never BUMP their images?
I posted in the TWRP thread when it first happened and @bender_007 (maker of AutoRec) reminded me about restoring to stock via download mode and helped me get it back to stock. When I flashed TWRP last night after doing the stock KK > root > install recovery > upgrade to LP process, I used TWRP from @777jon's thread: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=22377
So yeah, if you're like me and tried updating TWRP using the image from the TWRP site and borked your phone, I'm betting the only way to unbork it is to restore KK stock via the TOT.

Confirmed, it wasn't bumped(while the 2.8.6.0 was)

How to update to 4.4 with TWRP?

I rooted my tablet and installed TWRP end of august.
Two days ago I installed 4.4 with an OTA update which broke the phone, it always booted into recovery. I learned that TWRP was incompatible with 4.4 older versions of TWRP might cause problems with 4.4 and flashed the 4.3 factory image using adb. The tablet is now working again.
I'm just not sure how to proceed now. It seems the TWRP recovery is gone, because from Fastboot when I select recovery I get the dead android with the red triangle. Can I just update by following this post?

Where have you read twrp is not compatible with 4.4? Many people are using twrp with 4.4. You should use the latest version which supports SELinux security contexts.
It is probably easiest if you just flash the KRT16S factory image from that thread.

It doesn't seem to happen for everybody, maybe it's older versions of TWRP. Mine was from August. I rephrased my original post to make that clear. There are some threads here about the problem and if you google for it you'll find some more warnings. It's always the same thing, the tablet will only boot into recovery after an OTA with TWRP:

Thanks for your reply though, so I'll try flashing the factory image. Should I use adb for that or newest TWRP? Also the red triangle means my custom recovery is gone, correct?

Personally I think it is easiest to flash the factory image but you probably need around the same number of steps either way.
The factory image is meant to flash in boot loader using fastboot, not using adb.
The fallen android means you are using stock recovery. It is an image that hides the recovery menu. press/hold power, press/release VolUp, release Power to see the actual recovery menu and any errors which might have occured

Thanks again, all worked well going along with your guide. Only thing to do now is getting TWRP and SU flashed.
It seems like I'm not really up-to-date anymore when it comes to flashing, I only knew of using recovery and never heard of sideload or using fastboot to flash any images.

Unable to install TWRP Recovery on LG G Pad v50020f

Hey guys,so heres the problem...recently i had to use the LG Support Tool and prior to this i was v50020d. When the tool had finished restoring the stock ROM,it upgraded me to v50020f. So i went and successfully rooted it with KingoRoot surprisingly enough with no trouble at all. I then tried to install TWRP Recovery, through the TWRP app,Flashify,Rashr and i even tried Fastboot and ADB which im led to believe don't work with the v500 but i still tried it and had absolutely no success at all in installing TWRP. I have tried flashing every version of TWRP from 2.8.7.1 back to 2.6.3.0 i think using all those apps mentioned above. So i came on here to XDA to see could i find any solution to my problem but no luck either but i did find a post where a script was used, edited and apparently worked. I downloaded the zip file that was used in this process, edited the runme.bat file by changing the last letter of the build to f which would correspond to my build which is v50020f. I saved the edited file and then ran the script which when finished told me that recovery had been installed so i rebooted the G Pad,it started up,the blue teamwin screen came up and then it just hung there for hours! Thats was it nothing more. No recovery installed. So then i went and used Flashify & flashed `twrp-2.8.7.1-v500.img´ and when i rebooted i got 'secure booting error, cause:device unlock:so boot success!!' rebooted the G Pad again and the same thing happened blue teamwun screen loads and then nothing,no recovery. So i flashed the same recovery image with TWRP Recovery app and when it was finished i got the message 'Success!! Flashing recovery was successful, would you like to attempt rebooting into recovery? so i did and again the same thing happened. Teamwin blue screen and nothing more. When i check TWRP Recovery app afterwards it tells me that there is no recovery installed or it us not recognised. Can anybody please, please, please find a solution to my problem? Oh yeah,i even tried booting into recovey by using the power and volume up and down trick too and got the same result. Thank you so much guys...hope you can help.
I think I've seen that in order to install TWRP on the V500 is similar to how on my VK810 variant, at least the part that requires downgrading your bootloader. If it's like the VK810, it has to be the bootloader from 4.2.2. I'm sure there's TWRP threads in these sections, specifically for the V500 that give the details and files.
I'd love to know a way too. I just rooted which went great, but I have the V50020f and don't want to do another thing until I see what happens in this thread. After years of flashing and rooting I finally hard bricked my Lenovo Yoga 10 and this is my replacement tablet, so I don't want to chance it at all. Until I read a concrete solution for this build I'm staying where I am.
That wall of text is really hard to read @[email protected]!c, when I first saw it I was too tired to try and decipher it so ignored it. Now I've had another look.
Have you tried downgrading to an older firmware which people have had success with?
I had trouble when I first got this tablet but kept reading the forum and found a method to downgrade, it isn't pretty but eventually it worked. As I'm new to this device I'm not overly familiar with the different official firmware versions so I'm not exactly sure what you've got.
My tablet was more complicated as the LG tool put the Chinese, no Google apps, version on for me as that is where it was bought. So I had to downgrade so I could get apps from the Play Store to flash my recovery!
So patience and research will reward you.

Hi!! I'm in the same boat! Any chance you were able to work out a solution? Thanks so much for any help!!
I know it didn't work for the OP, but coming from bone stock v50020f, I successfully rooted using ioroot25r1, updated Supersu through playstore, then using flashify i installed TWRP 2.8.7.1 (newest I think). Once booted into TWRP recovery, I wiped cache, data, and system, and then installed AOSP Marshmallow. All went smooth as silk, no problems at all. Now I can finally stop being jealous of my wifes Nexus 7!! Hope this helps some.

i have just used twrp manager apk from playstore (similar to flashify) to get TWRP 2.8.7.1 on stock v50020f, rooted using ioroot25r1 on a mac, with updated Supersu through playstore. just had to run the apk twice as it failed first time, and have booted into twrp recovery.
Had the same problem with the recovery but worked by rooting and flashing recovery with flashify.

TWRP install on G4 H815 20A mm, doesn't stick (unlocked bootloader by LG official)

Hi,
I get TWRP running on phone , but when I boot into recovery , I always get the Standard Recovery, only option being a factory reset. Have opted for this factory reset and that is exactly what I get, no TWRP :crying:
Thanks
Also if you reboot to recovery through TWRP itself, it won't stick? If not: Is rooting an option for you? If yes: Try Flashify and flash it through this nifty little app .

This happened to me, too. Here is what i did:
Boot your device into fastboot mode via adb, straight up boot to recovery ("fastboot boot twrp-2.8.7.0-h815.img"), transfer the recovery image to your device, then flash it from within TWRP (there is an option for that within the normal install menu, its called "install image" or something like that). Hope this helps, it did for me.
Edit: Just realized you already found a solution. Never mind.
Ive the same problem. I unlocked the bootloader by the official procedure. Then i tried to flash twrp but it doesnt install truly. It always appear the stock recovery. I tried also clockrecovery but nothing. No recovery wants to get installed. Pls help me i want a custom rom on my g4

Honor 7X Oreo Stock Recovery

Hi, I manually updated my honor 7x (BND AL10 INDIAN) to EMUI 8 following the other post in this forum and after that I went on to flash TWRP recovery again from another post "complete_twrp_ramdisk.img" so that I could take full Nand backups and what not. But Here's the problem, When I try to flash the stock recovery back "BND_RECOVERY_NOcheck" which I flashed during upgrading to EMUI 8, it says "size of image is large than target device"
I tried this using boot fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery.img" and also using the TWRP. It doesn't work either way. So I'm basically stuck with TWRP. The reason I want stock recovery is because
1. I can install OTA UPDATES on EMUI 8 (I actually got one)
2. I may want to just be on complete stock like locked bootloader, sock recovery etc...
Could any one help?? Maybe I need the right stock recovery file ?
BTW It's my first post ever so please go easy if I did any mistakes.
Could you share your twrp? Thanks!

"BND_RECOVERY_NOcheck" is nouget stock recovery.
Oreo update replaces all the partitions, including the recovery that you flashed in order to install the update.
The stock recovery can be extracted from "update.app" , the one inside the oreo "updateL22.zip"

you should already have the update.zip.
use same one you "manualy" installed.
winrar did not work for me but 7-zip did.
there is also rom extractor built into "multi-tool" and stand alone extractor around here some where.
I found it here
the name is just like the twrp you flashed and just like the partition that you flashed. (recovery_ramdisk.img)

I dont know.
The new way to boot to recovery was written in other thread as "hold both volume buttons & power button"
not sure if it was a problem with extraction or not, but attached is the recovery I extracted. do not have it installed. I dont even have oreo installed., I'm still pulling files together and reading the update-scripts and trying to convince myself if it is worth trying it.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=262391
I have now jumped on board and did oreo conversion on L24, then flashed RR. I went and installed the oreo recovery, then back to this stock recovery. It worked fine for me.

The installation went halfway through, but now I can't complete (missing info howto flash bootloader / kernel) and I also can't go back as the partition layout has already changed to oreo style.
Steps done so far:
- unlocked boot loader
- installed twrp
- extract system image and recovery image from oreo update zip
getting the phone in fastboot mode i can successfully run
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery_ramdisk.img (i can also flash old recoveries this way, but none of them will successfully boot into recovery mode)
fastboot flash system system.img
either way, the system will not boot afterwards.
how do I manually flash bootloader / kernel on the oreo partition layout?
erecovery and hisuite won't recover my phone either...
Any hints appreciated

I dont know.
The new way to boot to recovery was written in other thread as "hold both volume buttons & power button"
not sure if it was a problem with extraction or not, but attached is the recovery I extracted. do not have it installed. I dont even have oreo installed., I'm still pulling files together and reading the update-scripts and trying to convince myself if it is worth trying it.

I have now jumped on board and did oreo conversion on L24, then flashed RR. I went and installed the oreo recovery, then back to this stock recovery. It worked fine for me.

Can I flash just the stock recovery to my phone and if so is it the recover_ramdis.img, or do I need to flash them all. I'm on mostly stock bnd-l24. Unlocked bootloader TWRP and magisk for root. There's a new update and i wanted to flash stock recovery so I could update.

Yes that is the recovery.
But if you have root, update not going to work

Will uninstalling magisk fix that or does the boot image have to be reflashed. Thank you for the quick response

Updates fail to install

I have a Sprint Moto Z2F, BL unlocked, rooted running the stock ROM
I've tried to return back to stock, recovery and not rooted but bootloader is still unlocked and tried to take the update but it always fails to install. What am I doing wrong?
hello....Bueller, .Bueller
Well reading other threads, if you unlock your bootloader and root, then go back to stock you can't get OTA updates

From another post I read from @Uzephi just recently there are some users who have been able to return to stock and receive the updates but IIRC there is a certain procedure to follow for it to work. Search @Uzephi's post and you'll be able to find it.
Sent from my Moto Z2 Force using XDA Labs
To add to what @fast69mopar said, here is the thread you should check out.
thanks
Yes, follow that thread. I have never had an issue getting updates on my sprint variant.

I've tried three times, I'm not wiping or formatting data, mounting the right way or order, when I get some time I'll try again. phone is running fine now, I just have updates frozen now so the notifications don't bug me.
Flashall works great,
I fastboot boot the TWRP.img file
then boot into TWRP, flash the TWRP zip and Magisk zip files.
I get a " can't mount system error", I'm not sure what to have checked when I wipe after installing TWRP
I tried to install the TWRP 3.2.2.0 but could never get the phone to boot after installing twrp zip
TWRP 3.2.1.0 is the only TWRP I can get to install and boot.
I have something overwriiten or not installed correctly \
I have to do some more reading of these threads and see where I'm doing wrong.
this slot a and b is confusing, maybe I did something wrong there. ( I really have not done anything with slot a or b, just installed files like those slots are not there. maybe one of them is corrupt
I tried a few more times but still can't get the OTA update to install.
I put my phone in the fastboot mode
I run Flashall
Flashall does its thing then when I reboot I sign in to my Google account, the phone is activated to my carrier. I get a notification for the system update, then it fails.
I go back to fastboot, flash and setup TWRP then root and restore my data and I'm back to normal
after Flashall my phone is back to stock, I tried to let the OTA update install and it fails everytime.
Maybe I should try some different ROM's since its so easy to get back to stock if something goes wrong.
