Hello!
Today I had a client come in with an unusual request. His Galaxy S 3 is broken (mainly the screen and possibly motherboard issue).
Now this client wants to recover the contacts from the phone - I wonder why he didn't just save them to an email in the first place - but the phone won't turn on at all. He wants the contacts bad and is willing to replace the whole motherboard for it.
What I'm wondering is if it's possible to just open the phone, remove the hard drive and use it with some sort of enclosure to connect it to a computer and open the files? Does somebody know anything about this?
I do not believe the hard drive is damaged.
Any input or thoughts are highly appreciated, thank you!

Contacts are stored on google account or in ATT phonebook. You don't need to do this. Just insert his sim card in other android phone , login to his google account and sync contacts.
Only if he sync'd to his Google or att acct. Theoretically, I think, you could swap his mb into a device with everything that does work. Maybe.

The client stored all of his contacts in the phone only. They are not on his SIM, SD, ATT phonebook or his GMAIL account.
Check your pm. Sent you some info

Good idea. So if I remove the hard drive from the clients phone and put it on a working S 3 it should have all the files, etc?
I said theoretically. I'm thinking it should be basically the same as a hdd swap on a pc

Unfortunately he did not sync anything. He has already bought a S 4 from my store and we tried syncing his email, checking the SIM, SD card and everything else. Also the client has some pictures saved on the phone that he wants too so I need access to the hard drive.
This should be possible with a "JTAG".
A JTAG will require soldering, and lots of patience. To do a JTAG, you need to buy a RIFF box to hook up the phone, then install software on PC.
http://www.mobiletechvideos.com
^I was recommended by that person company several times. You can buy a Riff box from there. (I don't know how to JTAG or where software can be found)
You can email the owner of the website and ask for help there.

Thank you for the reply. You and another user have recommended mobiletech so I will reach out to him.
Meanwhile, I will try to simply swap the mb/hd with another working S3 here at the store to see if that works.
I am interested in figuring out a inexpensive method for this since Google doesn't return much info.
Thanks to everyone else and the suggestions! =)

Check the Club Nokia web site. I used to have a Nokia phone, and they have a software suite that will allow you to export contacts from Outlook to most of their phones.
http://www.nokiausa.com/A4986252
You can Sync your contacts to your PC, then use the Nokia Suite to copy them from Outlook to your Nokia.
Note that if you don't have access to a Nokia data cable, in many cases you can sync with Infra-Red. I had an old Nokia 6610 and used IR from my laptop to keep my contacts up-to-date.
Hope this helps.
Good luck!
just install this, plug into activesync and you can view your phone from your desktop...therefore you can just copy everything to the sim and you should be all set.

Not 100% sure how to regain your data if you don't have a google account linked to it anymore. If you did just going to play.google.com and having it send an app like GotYa. But if the person that took your phone did a full wipe on it recovering anything remotely sounds like more of a challenge than an easy task.
With the phone back in hand you _might_ be able to use some regular PC data recovery tools to pull data off the SD card even if its been deleted prior.
Not sure if Anyone will be helpful in tracking things down, Most of the time the phone company just wants to drop the connection on the stolen phone and move forward from there.
Hopefully someone else will have better information than I can provide though. I've only dealt with Lost phones, never actually had one stolen.
Install Plan B from the online Play Store.
Google +?
Did you have either Google + or Dropbox on the phone? Both backup photos if you enabled them during setup.
can't download from google play

I can't download from Google Play store. It says I never accessed from my phone. None of my google accounts worked.
Found my photos but I can not get closer that 323 yards to get my phone. And the police aren't interested because the only crime was the theft from my car. If it were my cold dead body they would look.
Can any of the IMEI or other information help me get closer? How? Force a download? Drag and drop into the apps I have on my google accounts?
Please help!

Always...ALWAYS link your data with your google account....unless you work for the CIA, FBI, a terrorist organization, or NSA. You can sync your contacts, photos, apps and app settings, you name it. There is no need to walk into a sprint store anymore to "transfer your contacts." I dont know why they even still offer that service when you can just simply sync everything now.

Just want to connect to my pc and transfer some songs and movies to the phone and get this message "security policy restricts the use of pc connection"
Any suggestions?
T-Mobile branded phone, not rooted, all stock updated to Jellybean.
Thanks,

Use something like remote desktop. It acts as a web server on your phone, and via your pc web browser you can manipulate and xfer files and such.

Do you have an exchange account set up on the phone? That could be happening because of the security policies your system administrator might be enforcing on devices logged on the exchange server (if that's the case).

Sorry, I was not specific.
Since my exchange server imposes the security policy of not allowing the PC connection, am I SOL or is there a way around it?
In other words do I need to delete the account in order to transfer music, movie and pictures files from my device?
Or is there another way?
Thanks,
x

^^^^^^^^^^ that above is a work around for transferring items. If you want to remove and add your exchange account each time you want to do it via usb, that's a second option.

You could ask the system Admin to add an exception for your device.
If not you could always use the Micro SD card directly connected on the computer. That would also be much faster than other options. That wouldn't work though if the card is encrypted (that could also be enforced by the system admin)

I had the exact problem and talked to our Exchange Admin all he had to do is check the box in his policy to allow desktop or PC connections and it is working fine now
the weird thing about this is only problem with Samsung S4 same policy did not effect the Razr Maxx!!!
hope this help
OR Use modded Email.apk to remove extra restriction like mandatory pin lock (a.k.a. keyguard), minimum password length, encryption, etc.

Hi ,if you have a work account, specifically outlook or google, what you need to do is either uninstall outlook or turn of workmode on top menu.
my company recently set up an email account for me for HyperOffice....we linked it to my Email app on the phone....all of a sudden I could not transfer anything from phone to laptop.........HyperOffice never opened my email beyond the subject linep......HyperOfficewould not resolve the issue
for all of us in the company. ....HyperOffice is crap!! I UN-installed HyperOffice account from my Email app and NOW I can transfer from phone to laptop!!! So now I go through the web to HyperOffice (until we install Outlook)

Well, it turns out the problem is caused when I freeze the AT&T address book app. Unfreezing it does not fix the problem of saving contacts to the phone. It still only gives the ability to save it to Google or the SIM card. The only way to correct it was to do a factory reset and just not freeze the AT&T address book.
Has anyone else had this issue?
Are you google free?
Is there a benefit to saving to the phone as opposed to google? If you are google free, then I understand.

No real benefit. I just prefer to keep them on the phone as opposed to Google. One thing I do not like is Google (in particular GMail) seems to make everyone I've ever sent or received an email from is a contact.
I forgot my Google password andi reset my phone so now I can't get through the phones gmail login and I can't use it. I saw videos where I can use an otg cable but it didn't work because it wasn't going into the file browser so I can't install the app that bypasses it. Also is there any way I can do it using my computer and adb commands or whatever they're called. If I can't fix it my self should I take the phone to T-Mobile I bought the phone this month and I think they should be able to fix it or replace/exchange it.

All Android phones require a Gmail account. Replacing the phone will not fix your issue. Go to Gmail.com on your computers browser and go through the Google forgotten password link or just create a new account. This is not an XDA issue it is a Google support issue.

Well I don't know my account details so that won't work for it. Do I do the method with the otg cable and installing an app that bypasses it. I get stuck where you put the USB into the phone and the file browser is supposed to start up, but for me the browser doesn't start up.

Gonna be completely honest here your story and questions seem pretty shady. You need to contact Google to get into your account, you probably won't get assistance here bypassing a security feature like that.

As I already stated, you need to contact Google support for your issue. There is no one on XDA that will help you with this issue. It is an account problem.
@xjumpman45,
Google's Factory Reset Protection is there to help protect against devices being stolen or appropriated by those who don't own the device. It is a valuable protection but it does unfortunately come with some annoyances. I personally have been locked out of my own device due to some quirks with FRP. If you legitimately own the device you should also own (or have access to) the Google account that was used to activate the device. There are various resources available online that will help you bypass the FRP in a legitimate situation, fortunately these bypasses don't often work for those with less than legitimate situations.
Unfortunately we cannot help you remember your password or unlock your Google account. You'll need to take care of that. If you are unable to remember the password for the account there is a "Need help?" link directly on the Gmail sign in page, it will walk you through the process of resetting your password.
My response covers all the bases as far as the help that XDA is able to provide. Please do not post on this issue again. I have closed both threads you created to stop further discussion.
Thank you,
Rwilco12
