Ads with sound? - About xda-developers.com

Seriously, XDA? I realize it's expensive to run a site like this, but ads with sound will keep me from participating here.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not...
I just got a video ad on an XDA page that started blasting audio at me. If that trend continues, I don't want to participate in this forum. Just a moan as the forum description says.

I get you. I have no problem with ads in general, and I totally appreciate the resource that XDA is. But I hate it when a site starts blasting audio with no warning. Like a lot of users, I'm listening to music much of the time, and suddenly have two things going at once. It makes for a very iffy user experience.

You act like we hand pick the ads. Obviously we don't allow auto-playing ads like that as they are really annoying. Our ad networks are pretty good with keeping them out, but if you do see one please let us know on the "Intrusive Ads?" thread! We'll report them and they'll remove them if they haven't already (because if they are playing here, they are probably playing on other sites as well).

why ?

Pocket Secure 4.0

Here is the link to pocket secure 4.0. This is a great security that has great developer support. Works great with black 3 and is also skinable. Check it out. BTW its not freeware but for about $15 USD you cant beat it.
Now, why does this sound to shameless advertising?
Can this thread be locked. After all, the OP got his point across.
No point going forth with this. Personally I hate spam posts, I would go as far to suggest to outright delete it if possible.

Sorry if it does sound like spam, just thought I'd share it. I spent a good amount of time serching for a program that does just what it does, so I thought I'd post it in a forum that I frequent. Considering we dont have the best search engine on this forum I gave it a simple title just incase someone in the future is looking for the same. Maybe that person wont waste your time with a useless post like I have. Cheers!

Well, I can say for sure that kree's post is NOT Spam! He is one of the newest users of Pocket Secure, and was just sharing his approval here. He has done this by his own free will, and was not asked to!
Users sharing their good experiences with other users are what these forums are all about. Is it not?
@kree:
Thank you for your kind words. Enjoy Pocket Secure, and let me know if I can help you with anything else!
Also watch for a major update in a few weeks from now. This is, as always, free to registered users!
Great security.

Please quit with the audio-default-enabled ads that autoplay

Hey guys
Please Q/A your ads setup. Playing audio enabled auto-play ads is extremely annoying and beyond acceptable.
Let's keep both of us happy and un-adblocked.
thanks
Do you mean on the site or the app? I always have my speakers turned off on my machine at work, which is generally the only time I'm not on XDA using the app, so I never noticed sound in the ads.
I hate that sh#t though--especially when I'm at work and not trying to draw attention to the fact that I'm taking a break from working to spend time on XDA.
At any rate, the XDA Premium app is well worth the $1.49 to not have to deal with ads (or having to use ad-blockers to get rid of it)...

they are on the laptop/pc and are insanely annoying, watching something else while on xda (i.e. rooting video) and the dishwasher tablet advert starts up out of nowhere with me left thinking "WHAT!!!!??? WHAT KIND OF IDIOT DECIDED TO PLAY THAT!!!!"
Please take a screen shot of the offending ads and post here or pm a senior member of staff. We generally don't like this crap either..

Why are the adverts starting with audio enabled?

I'm getting one for Vanish carpet cleaner over and over, it just won't stop!!
Also the option of creating an acc with Skipit so I don't have to listen to it and all I have to do is pay a dime every time I skip an add !!! WTF??? I have to PAY not to listen to this rubbish.. You have got to be joking !
And I've just found that the pause and mute only work for 30 seconds and then the buttons don't do anything and the adds just play and play with no way of stopping them or shutting them up.

Hello Mr. Fridgeman,
Please, why don't you try to relax yourself for a moment and let us work on this issue?
Using this kind of attitude it is of any help, we are working on it but, since we aren't the direct culprit for this kind of ads, things may takes some time to solve.
And please, use a differente language
Thanks.

I'm not blaming the site admin's, it's clearly some moron advertiser sneaking this rubbish in.
It's not there all the time, which will make finding it that much harder. Its seems to kick in at random times?

Yeah, what is going on in these advertisers head?
"Hey let's annoy the living daylights out of possible customers, that way we are sure not to get any customers."
What's worse is that people will install ad-blockers causing sites to lose revenue, couldn't you theoretically sue the bastards for doing this?
I haven't actually encountered sound ads here, though I have on other websites which is really annoying when you are working with 60+ tabs. (can get as high as 400 but then its just because I haven't been cleaning them).
I might have found a work round, or I might have just not had this come up today (or the site might have fix it?)..
If you right click on the add and pick 'Settings' from the Flash options at the bottom (not Global settings) and reduce the amount of local storage allowed to zero it may stop the add running...
All I can say is, I did that yesterday and I haven't had it run again (yet!).
You might have to restart your browser (I'm running FF)...
I was wrong. It doesn't stop it, it's just started up again
It's now coming from 'tag.ybrant.hiro.tv' But still has the Skipit banner at the top...

Well I just joined and can not contribute to any of the conversations I would like to contribute to because I do not have 10 posts yet so I guess you can count me as unsatisfied at the moment.. I can't even comment on stuff in the marketplace? So I'm forced to contribute BS to conversations I don't care about to get 10 posts so I can join the discussions I want to join. Another thing that I do before posting a question about ROM "xyz" is to read the whole thread on that rom. You would be or not be suprised as to how many times the same question gets asked.

It is quite an ad-heavy site unless you use a blocker of some description. There's also a mammoth amount of content. I've seen a lot of people mention load times as a downfall, but to be honest I don't notice it taking any longer than some of the other tech sites I frequent
Load times are such a subjective thing though, everyone will differ. What browser do you use? Firefox seems to pop up a lot re: slow load times.
Well I typically do most of my surfing at work, which I use IE right now. Don't have much of a choice. I downloaded Firefox a while back but it never worked right. Not sure if it's because of the firewall or whatever here, (I have no idea how that all works) but Firefox was terrible. I tried to get Chrome but it's blocked too.
The slowness to me isn't really a huge deal, just curious why as other forums I frequent load pretty fast. But the more I surf around here, there is a TON of info.

I use IE (6) at work too Ed, and it's noticeably (horribly) slower than Chrome at home. Likewise, all other options are restriced here for me.
For personal use at home, the latest Chrome with Ad Blocker Pro (free) works extremely well at speeding up the genera;l browsing experience here at XDA. It is a resource-heavy forum so it still takes a little longer to load, but that's the price I pay for the wealth of information here, to me personally anyway
Could be worse, I was on 56k at home until last year when they upgraded our RIM (out in woop-woop)

This whole site has a great deal of unhelpful, self righteous twats. Top it off with the stupid posting restrictions for new users and you have a pretty damn unfriendly place for noobs. I should have known from the snarky video I had to watch just to join that this was an exclusive Android guru only place. It sucks that people come here to chat and get help with issues and this is the kind of responses they get. Good job.

The default setting is off.
IMS = IP Multimedia Subsystem
IP = Internet Protocol
SIP = Session Initiation Protocol
With setting off, SMS is sent/received over 1x circuit switched connection
With setting on, SMS is supposedly sent/received over a SIP session over IP (e.g. LTE)
I'm not sure if one is better than the other or what advantages/disadvantages either would have.
Is IMS even functional? I know it will be for VoLTE, but what about now?

Look at this dudes signature, you can tell he's a corn ball.
Anyway, I was curious about this too because sms over ims is supposed to be available when volte launches, which hasn't yet (volte is voice and sms coming over LTE). Right now only data comes over LTE. Voice is still 1x with some other convoluted ehrpd stuff.
Anyhow, any luck with this? Did you give it a try? I imagine your data usage would go up since text would go against your data usage.

Finally, someone whom sees it how I do. It's sad to see that this still happens. Every since the BB days and mIRC chat all the way up until now it continues. Forums are meant to help the "Noob" or "Lam3r" if any of you are old enough to remember that term. If you want to help then great, but if not then I would love for these fat, anti-social dorks to do something other than harass and discourage the young ones (and the older) who wish to learn.
If everyone could follow that philosophy as a general rule. Kind of like Open Source software, it's done for a cause, something greater than one's self. If forum users (not naming any in particular) would open their minds and allow a bit of tolerance for the unknowing rather than providing links to this, this and this (which sometimes is the easiest way to resolve and issue or answer a question). But god forbid if someone doesn't use the search feature.
I understand that answering the same questions over and over again is annoying. But rather than push that person off with another link or trolling comment just think back to when you were that "Lam3r" or that "N00b" noone wanted to help back in the 90's and how frustrating it was.
None of us started out this life knowing anything about software development, computers and networking, telecommunications, etc. But when a forum is created, watch out....everyone is an expert and "you are an idiot" if you have a simple question to ask. N00b's, don't let these loser's discourage you. Keep looking for your answers on XDA and you will find someone willing to help. There are tons of super cool members here.
And again, I'm with you 100% Xfanatic....

I agree with you about agreeing with Xfanatic...and Lam3rs should not get discouraged because there really are good people out there!
On the topic - this reminds me of the setting in older phones (maybe began with the first few colour phones?) of using GPRS for SMS. Never really understood if it had any advantage/disadvantage and it was disabled by default. I didnt see any change in performance if it was on or off, and also couldn't see a notable change in data usage but it was harder to track back then...

This user's guide I found for the phone has the setting listed as one of the features - http://dl.owneriq.net/4/41149a6d-d289-4d77-b932-7006a2d469d8.pdf
IMS
wikipedia is your friend ref: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Multimedia_Subsystem .. option remains relevant for new phones ie Nexus 4 etc. Sometimes registration is required to enable.

T-mobile definitely utilizes LTE(SIP - see above for definition) for sending texts. Not sure about other carriers.
Edit: I just tested on and off with or without registration, and really don't experience any noticeable difference regardless of how it's set. None the less, its apparently active on T-Mobile network.
Really?

Probably because nobody could believe the question was asked considering how well known titanium backup is and how often it gets mentioned and the fact a simple google or play search would have answered it.
