Turn on SMS over IMS? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Can someone tell what was the default setting on the Turn on SMS over IMS? Should that feature be on or off and what does it do in general thanks?

You don't have to start another thread just because your first one didn't get answered...

OP, it's a pain asking on message boards, people get all defensive when they don't know the answer!
The only semi-useful info I could find was at code.google.com - (I'm a new user, can't post URL's)

This whole site has a great deal of unhelpful, self righteous twats. Top it off with the stupid posting restrictions for new users and you have a pretty damn unfriendly place for noobs. I should have known from the snarky video I had to watch just to join that this was an exclusive Android guru only place. It sucks that people come here to chat and get help with issues and this is the kind of responses they get. Good job.

The default setting is off.
IMS = IP Multimedia Subsystem
IP = Internet Protocol
SIP = Session Initiation Protocol
With setting off, SMS is sent/received over 1x circuit switched connection
With setting on, SMS is supposedly sent/received over a SIP session over IP (e.g. LTE)
I'm not sure if one is better than the other or what advantages/disadvantages either would have.

Is IMS even functional? I know it will be for VoLTE, but what about now?

Look at this dudes signature, you can tell he's a corn ball.
Anyway, I was curious about this too because sms over ims is supposed to be available when volte launches, which hasn't yet (volte is voice and sms coming over LTE). Right now only data comes over LTE. Voice is still 1x with some other convoluted ehrpd stuff.
Anyhow, any luck with this? Did you give it a try? I imagine your data usage would go up since text would go against your data usage.

Finally, someone whom sees it how I do. It's sad to see that this still happens. Every since the BB days and mIRC chat all the way up until now it continues. Forums are meant to help the "Noob" or "Lam3r" if any of you are old enough to remember that term. If you want to help then great, but if not then I would love for these fat, anti-social dorks to do something other than harass and discourage the young ones (and the older) who wish to learn.
If everyone could follow that philosophy as a general rule. Kind of like Open Source software, it's done for a cause, something greater than one's self. If forum users (not naming any in particular) would open their minds and allow a bit of tolerance for the unknowing rather than providing links to this, this and this (which sometimes is the easiest way to resolve and issue or answer a question). But god forbid if someone doesn't use the search feature.
I understand that answering the same questions over and over again is annoying. But rather than push that person off with another link or trolling comment just think back to when you were that "Lam3r" or that "N00b" noone wanted to help back in the 90's and how frustrating it was.
None of us started out this life knowing anything about software development, computers and networking, telecommunications, etc. But when a forum is created, watch out....everyone is an expert and "you are an idiot" if you have a simple question to ask. N00b's, don't let these loser's discourage you. Keep looking for your answers on XDA and you will find someone willing to help. There are tons of super cool members here.
And again, I'm with you 100% Xfanatic....

I agree with you about agreeing with Xfanatic...and Lam3rs should not get discouraged because there really are good people out there!
On the topic - this reminds me of the setting in older phones (maybe began with the first few colour phones?) of using GPRS for SMS. Never really understood if it had any advantage/disadvantage and it was disabled by default. I didnt see any change in performance if it was on or off, and also couldn't see a notable change in data usage but it was harder to track back then...

Before phones were smart.

Haha! some like the P900 I still have a lot of respect for and it was probably as smart as todays phones with less gimmick
I was talking about phones from around 2002 or 2003...Nokia 7250i for example
This user's guide I found for the phone has the setting listed as one of the features - http://dl.owneriq.net/4/41149a6d-d289-4d77-b932-7006a2d469d8.pdf

IMS
wikipedia is your friend ref: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Multimedia_Subsystem .. option remains relevant for new phones ie Nexus 4 etc. Sometimes registration is required to enable.
Rob

T-mobile definitely utilizes LTE(SIP - see above for definition) for sending texts. Not sure about other carriers.
Edit: I just tested on and off with or without registration, and really don't experience any noticeable difference regardless of how it's set. None the less, its apparently active on T-Mobile network.

Really?

guitar hero

does anyone have a link to the guitar hero cab? greatly appreaciated
Seconded.... except my message is much to short
Me too Please !!
why is everyone so protective of it, ive seen numerous posts on this site with people claiming they have it yet noone wants to give it up. it'd be greatly appreaciated i mean we are all here for the same reason, to help eachother out.
Probably because its copyrighted
just because someone has it, it doesnt mean they are going to freely give it out to anyone. It's not being rude, just selective. For example, if I had this game. I would only give it out to other people that have contributed to this site, not just a bunch of leechers that gain info or software and have nothing reciprocating to offer. And secondly it would be via PM or other communication ways. Not posted publicly on this site (which is against site rules)
Put it this way.... i'm not going to tell you where ( again against site rules) but there IS a site that has this app posted ( cTacked version) but you will need to find out where it is posted for yourself.

Quite true, but isnt distributing edited versions of Windows Mobile O/S.
I am not complaining btw without Kavana and Rickys WM6.1 i would be stuck with BT Bloatware.
its really not that great. i was able to nail every song on the highest settings with little effort. its mainly good to just show off. plus you need a good interneet connection to get the songs

so you leechers keep your grubby paws off
I'm not a leecher. Never asked for a damned bit of your warez (I always hated the whole fake-music genre of games), but it seems like I hit a nerve with that comment. Guess if you have it, you're a leecher.
All I was saying is that having something like guitar hero makes certain people feel special...because they have it and others don't. If they let it out too liberally, just like the child in the schoolyard, they're not special anymore because everybody is the same again. They lose the "look what I got and you don't" shine.
It's a nasty attitude and shows that people really don't grow up. If you don't want to give it out, you really don't have to say anything at all. But it's the schoolboy in you that has to yell "MINE!"
To the original poster, Guitar Hero III mobile is available online. T-Mobile has it in their downloads as well. And I'm not sure who told you we're all here for the same reason: to help each other out. There are quite a lot of people here who feel they're at some elite status and can't be bothered with people who are where they were, say, ten months ago.
problem is, that most people dont contribute to this site ( or at least this forum) they sit here asking all sorts of questions, but never offer any help to others. Im not an eliteist.... i did what most techy type guys most like did when they first got their phones, they dabbled with it, figured crap out for themselves, and when they didnt, they found the almightly google for help. Once they started to put 2 & 2 together with what their phone could and couldnt do, they started offering help to others, and i stress help. Help is not giving out software that they have and saying: " here ya go! " help is actually resolving someone elses problem. and i hardly think that a software request is a problem. For those certain individuals that i've seen on this site actuall make a signifigant contribution to help others that are in need, when they've hit me up for software, i've always hooked them up, but for the ones that "hit & run" and have not had anything to offer to date, i dont give them anything. (and i stress give). its not like im going to be seeing these people on what you call the schoolgrounds anytime soon and i dont really care how many people have the same software i have. i do feel that some deserve it and some dont , based on their merit. simply googling guitar hero III and finding a thread in this forum, finding out that there is a guitar hero III for the mobile phone and then requesting it is not contributing anything in any way. ( BTW i've been with this forum since nov of 2006 and have had a smartphone since WM2003 so i dont know where you are getting your 10 months ago figure)
Nah, dude, that wasn't meant as a slight to you. I can't disagree with anything you wrote. I'm fairly new here myself (though I've had a smartphone since I had WM2003 on my Samsung SCH-i600 with Verizon). I joined it because it's a relatively well-respected forum in the smartphone community and a place that everyone asking questions elsewhere is sent to.
The problem is this forum just lacks moderation and organization. Being new here, I feel sorry for people just showing up and having to dive through this mess. Yes, a lot of questions get repeated. But it's fiendishly easy to say "justfuckinggoogleit.com" to the point that over 80% of a user's posts reflect that..again, without giving any real help. It makes the community look bad as a whole. That's what pisses me off.
I think being called a leech kinda set me off, too, since there's nothing on my phone (except the ROM) that's not either bought-and-paid-for or freeware.
im not calling you specifically a leech. im calling the people with 2 posts, one being "hey, can you also send guitar hero to me too??", leeches. they are the same retards that post 400000 times "HELP! ZOMG!!! I FINALLY GOT THE ROM TO WORK BUT MY KEYBOARD LAYOUT IS MESSED UP". ya know what i think of that? **** YOU AND YOUR KEYBOARD. if you are too stupid to read or use the SEARCH function (not google), then you are too stupid to use a phone like this. i realize that most are just lazy and are above searching for the answer or reading a few pages..to them i also have a heart felt **** you.
if someone has 50 or 100 posts and asks a silly question, i will gladly provide the answer if i know it. but the guy with 2 posts in 6 months can go find it himself.
when your first reaction to an issue you have with your phone is to post it in a new thread....you dont deserve help. how about doing some of the legwork yourself instead of posting "i NEED a step by step set of instructions blah blah blah". what you NEED is a kick in the nuts.
and if you really feel that by us saying "go do a search the topic has been discussed 4500000 times" makes the community look bad.....how does the community look when you have a bunch of posts by people with 2 post to date, asking all the same questions as eachother? i think its retarded that some senior users actually have to use their signatures to list step by step instructions for some of the most talked about topics, just so they dont have to type it for the 10000th time. hows that make our community look? makes it look like there are a handful of people that know what they are doing and it makes the rest look like a buncha n00b tards that are leading eachother down the stupid trail.
SO damn true!!! On that note LMFAO LMFAO LMFAO LMFAO

eta for working camera and sound?`

Hi, I'm using android on my tilt 2 right now and like it quite a bit. However, I won't use it full time because it doesn't have sound support or camera support, or bluetooth lol.
Do we have an ETA for those things?
Also, would someone please instruct me as to how I can find/measure the hardware interrupts of the device so that I may pass the info along to some other developers I know who don't have an HTC phone.
Thanks
Smith
i feel a flaming coming on... you might want to read some threads before speaking in here...
It's an honest enough question here.
I don't mean to seem impatient, because i'm not. I'm happy with what there is. Was simply wondering, especially because I may be able to contribute to the project.
If you're going to flame though, I guess it's time to get your caps-lock on. Won't bother me.
You could have asked this in one of the main threads... or used the search function to search for your answer which has been all along "when we get it we get it... no eta"
Seems pointless to start a new thread on this thats all

Last I heard was something about by July, but refusing to lock it down to a specific year.
no1 knows man, it will come out when it comes out ,just gotta wait
This question has been asked many times in this forums, but at the current state for the Rhodium, we don't have drivers for the sound from what I have heard.
As for bluetooth, I am not sure what the current state is, but I heard that the bluetooth is a completely different from other devices that HTC has made.
Kenichi
Maybe we should make this a sticky for those who can't read too good or are too lazy to use the search option. Kind of getting tired of going through the main thread and half the posts are just the same regurgitated questions. Or maybe we should create a ban if the same question has been asked more than say 3 times.
If you want to help there is some IRC channel or something I think I remember reading. or PM phhusson maybe? He seems to be heavily involved.
In case you didnt notice, people are a little sensitive about the sound/camera questions around here. Probably because they were flamed for asking it too It almost like it is the first question everyone asks when running android for the first time.
cameraand sound?
I think that's like asking when exactly will Windows Phone 7 come out, or when will the next solar eclipse be, maybe even, where did you put your keys last?
When people get it to work is when you will have it. I don't think anyone knows exactly how it works, something to do with hardware issues, so until it's cracked/figured out there can't be a date.

some of you guys are funny and make jokes about it which is funny and tolerable, but then we have those "followers" that repeat what is already stated (roast em this and that it was said already really how many posts do we have to see about that.) its a forum, it a community and give positive help and stop always cherping because a. u probably didnt have the nadz to roast anyone and b. really you didnt have to come to the post to read it you could have easliy went to the next one. its ten times easier to give help and pass a joke damn stop being so uptight become a leader not a follower...pretty much everything is unknown till they release it or they mention it on the site, but feel as thou the camera will probably be the last thing thou if they do get it to work properly (all speculative based on the fuze)

I guess it was a mistake making the ARM9 launch the rear-speaker when in call, but can't that help ?

he was using the speakerphone when he booted android. you know, it seems a lot of crap is dependant upon being active in windows for it to work in android (keyboard backlight, front hardkey lights, etc.). i wonder is there a way to make everything active at boot time, like camera, speaker, etc etc. not saying it would magically make the stuff work properly, but might make it easier to mess with some stuff to try n get it working ?
I was thinking the same thing, I tried playing music when I started up android.. no luck, and the speaker phone is just a line the the startup.txt if Im remembering correctly

Why you get short/one word answers! (The Long Answer)

I wrote this to explain to the new users why they might get what they consider short or bad answers... when really they aren't!
First off, this is meant to be a basic guide for basic understanding, there may be things that are slightly wrong or not completely accurate (to some experts) but this is for BASIC UNDERSTANDING and not meant to bash or flame any ideas, beliefs or operating systems. If anyone wants any more information they will know how to find it.

Why you get short/one word answers!
A lot of users here are sometimes confused, disgruntled or scared off by confusing short -sometimes one word- answers.
I thought i would take some time to explain. And it will take time. For the short story go down to the bottom. Sit back and get ready to understand why you feel you aren't understanding something........

The Long Answer
This is also a common problem with new users in linux forums. This is no co-incidence! It is not that the more knowlegable members are ignorant, short, or rude. They just speak in quick short answers to help you (help yourself).
Why you get short or one word answers!
Let me start on Linux. I personally am not a user, but i have researched it. It is not for me personally, it does not have the features I need or support some of my fancy hardware. Dont get me wrong, Linux is a Great alternative for many users, beginner or advanced. I would consider installing Ubuntu (built on Linux) for my friends parents or grandparents! And anyone else that likes the way iOS is built but doesn't want Apple. But Linux is LOVED by programmers! Why ? Because its Open Source software.
What is Open Source?
Open source software is written "un-compiled" meaning anyone can "open" up the program, read it, learn how it works, or edit it***
How can you legally edit someones program and use it yourself?
GPL General Public License - the linux kernel and many other things are licenced under this.
Basically it is the opposite of copyright, meaning everything under the licence is free, and can and must be able to be read, edit and be re-used to what ever means the other party wants, as long as what they do is under the GPL as well. So any program that works with GPL software, uses code or ideas from GPL software (no matter how small), shares programming libraries with, ect.... MUST BE FREE and OPEN SOURCE. This can be messy for people that want to make money off certain ideas and software.. But,... its all in the name of freedom. Lets just leave it there.
What does any of this have to do with Android?
Android is built on a Linux derived kernel, most of the code for the famous android kernel came for linux! so.... GPL.... so... Open Source!
**This is why android app developers ask you to "donate to" not "buy" their app.** Its a Google Android / GPL thing.
So why do programmers like Linux and or Open Source?
They like it because they are constantly learning and curious! With Linux or any program/software that runs on/with/for Linux they can learn how it works! Better yet, if they want their program to do that, all they have to do is copy and paste it from where they saw it first, then edit it to their own means.
How programmers think:
Im curious about "X"....
Im going to search for "X" where i think im going to find it
I found it! I like it,
Hmm what is this in here? What is "Y"??
Im going to search for "Y"
NO!?! I ll ask a buddy programmer....
He told me "Z" just... "Z"
Im going to search for "Z"
OH!! that makes sense!!!!
Im going to use that!
See a common trend? Search, learn, search, ask, search, learn, search, ask , search.
Click to collapse
In programming this leads to the thinking, "Why type something again if its already been typed? - I can copy and paste!!!"
Similarly:
In forums and helping others it leads to thinking "Why type something that has already been typed? - If you search "X", you find something that has already been typed and i dont have to copy and paste it or find it for you!!!. " Search this word.....
On top of that, programming code uses many "short forms", "broken words" and "gibberish" that makes a lot of sense when you know what it means. This results in thinking in short terms that mean a lot (to them)!
Closing
As said above its not out of being rude or elitist, its a way of thinking.
-That way of thinking is a part of programming, and leaning anything in that world, you have to learn the way of thinking. >
-Part of the learning to think that way is getting fed up and saying "Im just going to find out myself!!" >
-Then, by the time you learn how to find anything you want to know on your own, you have an epiphany and realize they were telling you "exactly what you needed to hear". They were the Oracle and you are Neo. The Matrix has you, and it was all about the journey!

I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself?" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

EXACTLY. I cannot tell you how many people have asked me "what is with the typos", or "why so short, u mad bro?", even when at the bottom of the post, it clearly states "Sent from my Cliq2 using XDA Premium App"
Very nicely said. I know I've joined the right forum now!!
This is so true, I'm not a Dev, but I am a technician, and we techies think the same way.
Also, off topic, but ya gotta love that movie reference.

Rethinking Spam policies

Hi,
I am a software developer, installed a rom in my cellphone from this forum and have some bugs to report.
I cant! Why? I'm a new user, need 10 threads... Ok let's post some threads,
I cant! Why? 5 minute beetween eath thread.... Ok, since I love this forum's community and respect your work, let's buy the pro-xda-forum app from the store. Maybe being a premium xda-forum member I can post.
I cant either!
OK, guys. It seem you are preventing both SPAM and potential users in the forum with your rules...
Just a constructive critic.
PD: don't need a reply saying the importance of prevent spam, and so... There are better ways to manage this issue.
Its to stop idiots posting useless crap in the dev topics.
Pointless *****ing from someone who thinks he is better than everybody else. Reported.
We all had to deal with this, and those of us who put the time and effort in are thankful for these restrictions as there would be even more idiots and wasters without them.
Suck it up, take the fall do the time. That made you what you are. That makes you what you are. How long have we been around this thing of ours?

And now it seems that you are using your own thread to get to 10 posts...
Seriously? Is it so difficult to get 10 USEFUL posts?
Just look around! You'll find plenty of noobs asking the same question, all you gotta do is make the day for 10 chaps...
And as a software developer, you should very well know the potential and threat of spam...
Also, the 10 post rule has a deeper meaning attached...it is there so that users inculcate a habit of assisting in the flow of knowledge...
They should realize that the journey is more important than the result...
I see that you have 3 more posts to go...do try and help out a few blokes on the way...
I don't know about others, but I am actually interested on your 11th post in the dev section...

Think I did a useful proposal here. I read in the explanation for this noob-spam issues that if we know of a better alternative to filter users just propose it.
If you read me between lines you have a proper alternative by just letting the ones, like me, who contribute in the xda-premium app to change their user status to something less restrictive.
Don't you think it's a good idea to both enhance the app-buys and give users like me an alternative?
Don't want to mess with the forum, just report a bug since yesterday jejejeje

No, I think it is a really bad idea. A total of $1 to get some sort of 'Special' status? Because the people who want to come on here purely to spam and try to get commercial crap posted won't want to pay $1 to get a quicker and easier route to doing that will they
While your proposed idea does look good on paper, the issue of piracy pops in...
Android is the worst os when it comes to development, from an anti-piracy point of view...
Granted that piracy is rampant on other os's too, but it is much much much more than any other os of its calibre...
I can bet my whole work on xda that more than 80% of all android users have pirated an app or game or theme or whatever...
So, as I said, granting dev area access to all junior members is not such a good idea, as it would actually increase app piracy, rather than push up sales...
2 more to go...

Thank you for your concern.
This is the ROM-post (FOXHOUND for GalaxyS3): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708371
This is the issue:
Hi, I’m having issues with the phone-number recognition algorithm. Is there any tweak with it here o just a JellyBean error?
Here in Buenos Aires, Argentina we have this numbers: +54 11 0000-0000, if the number is a cellular phone, we add a nine like: +54 9 11 2222-2222. I have all the mobiles in my contactlist like that. But because the ’9′ is not used for internal calls, The network providers don’t forward the nine and I see +54 11 2222-2222.
So When an incoming call / sms says the number is +54 11 2222-222, The phone doesn’t show the proper contact because it’s missing the ’9′ in front of it.
In stock rom from my galaxy S3, my old iphone, and some other roms I tested I didn’t have this issue. Any ideas?
thanks!!!

Contrary to what I had believed, your post doesn't have a close precedent (from what I could conclude through a quick google)
While I do not know the solution or what causes such issues on your device, I can suggest a workaround...
You obviously use call log pretty much...
In my phone, there does appear an option to edit numbers before calling...what this does is simply copy-pasting the number to the dialler where you can freely edit it...
There, its a simple matter of adding a 9 in between...
P.s. I don't run jb, so the exact option may vary

Thank you for your time looking for a fix and the workarround.
I found another one, just putting both phones in the contact works for me. Now I have my regular contacts with both with and without the '9'.
Why do you need the contact with '9' ? Because if I am abroad and have to talk to a mobile phone in my country, the 9 is a must to establish the call.
Why do you need the contact without the '9' ? Just because the phone can't recognize the contact if not.
Really appreciete the devotion in solving others issues. Keep up the good work making this forum the great place it is.
If it was an open source rom, I'm sure you could patch the framework to ignore the lack of 9 for caller id
I'm a bit noob on Android, had I Phone since it's release. But I'll be checking if I can review this in the source.

PSA: If you are just coming to T-Mobile, check your GPS within 14 days.

Just switched from Verizon a few days ago. I had a note 3 there as well. I am now on my fourth phone. The first three were black Note 3s and the GPS was unusable almost non functional. Got a white one from a new shipment as my fourth and while it is weak compared to our other phones, it is accurate enough to get around. I just want to make sure everyone thinks to check GPS before their return period is up as there is a bad batch out there. My first three even comprised of phones from two different phones. Good luck!

A Samsung device... with a bad GPS? NEVER!
Ummm... its pretty much common knowledge by now that Samsung devices have finicky GPSes. I've had a Captivate, an S3, and an S4. GPS issues with all of them that took some tweaking to figure out.
Unfortunately, its not a hardware issue. Its a Samsung issue, most likely relating to baseband programming.
One thing that might fix it is forcing your phone to use HSPA only when you're using your GPS. On previous Samsung phones, network switching would kill the GPS every time so it doesn't seem far-fetched to think they still haven't fixed it now.
I just got my Note 3 last Friday so like 5 days ago. I have no issues with my GPS, it locks in about 8 seconds. I did have to turn on both GPS and Google location settings in Maps settings and it was fine. I don't use Maps often so i turn off Google location settings until i need them.
My GPS is was pretty weak too. It would take about a minute to get a lock, and when navigating down a freeway it would usually think I'm on the service drive next to it and constantly tell me to turn, etc... Strangely after flashing Willl03s cm11 my GPS locks right away and navigation is dead nuts.

You're lucky. My HTC and Motorola phones had much better GPS. And I've had Samsung phones since the Moment. I'm willing to accept these shortcomings to have a device that is far superior in just about every other aspect.
It might be software issue or a bad app. I told op in his other thread the steps to take. Never heard back.

Did everything you said, on several phones. I had mentioned that, you may have overlooked it. These were problems I was having on out of the box phones, so roms and rooting at that point were irrelevant.
These phones tend to turn the actually GPS on for battery. Took me a while to figure it out. Make sure that us actually on then try again. Mine was fine to start then a little while ago it had issues. Turns out the GPS was off. All that is on is Google location with WiFi.

If it was a useless feature, there would be a huge uproar about it all over XDA.
Generally when someone goes on the sarcastic defensive, it means they know they did something wrong that they didn't do on their "working" phone. Just saying.

Are you serious right now? I am not an idiot when it comes to android phones. I have had many. I also am familiar with Samsung and GPS issues. I had an experience where 3 phones functioned as if they had no GPS antenna what so ever. I cleared GPS data, I downloaded the assistance data. I tried the NTP trick. Obviously I know it is not a common problem which is why I thought there was a possibility that there is a bad batch floating around out there. If you are so bored and aggitated that you feel the need to give me sarcastic condescending responses in response to me trying to simply be helpful, then I feel that speaks for itself. Next time if I feel I have something helpful to contribute I guess I will just keep it to myself. Asking people to check their GPS in the timespan of 14 days...how dare me. Sorry XDA

Sarcasm gets sarcasm. Can't take the heat? Get out of the sun.
You didn't specify any specifics as to what you tried in your first post and you've had cheeky responses to everyone else, what did you expect we were going to do, give you a shiny medal?
All of this that you just posted should have been in your first post. Your first post basically tells anyone who's having any GPS issue to return their phone but outlines nothing about what you did to attempt to fix it. Don't you think that's just a little bit important to put troubleshooting steps in a post when you're making a statement that there is a bad batch going around?
It isn't rocket science.

I think I stated why I was being cheeky in my last post. The information that you put in your previous post should have been in the first one. Since it wasn't, it was logical to assume that you didn't know what you were doing. I wouldn't have said anything if you didn't turn around and have another cheeky quote to someone else which you also apparently thought deserved a second post all of its own.
There would have been no cheeky responses if you had been up front with all of the information in your original post.

See the above. There really ought to be a school for how to formulate one's original post when starting a new thread with a test that you have to pass before you can ever post. If everyone posted threads saying that people should return a device based on issues they were having but with no details as to what specifically makes that device faulty, we would have people returning devices in droves for no good reason whatsoever. Don't attack me for doing what most others want to do or have done in the past and just given up on.
He didn't say to return the phone, he was simply saying to make sure the GPS worked okay before the 14 day return window was up. Really no harm in it, a better course of action on your part would have been to simply clarify some things that OP should have included in your first response instead of being a douche. Might as well close this thread OP since nobody can try to be helpful without getting flamed.

Well let's just go ahead and go through all the points that your elitist mind has presented here. I create a post indicating that I had 3 bad GPS's, I suggested that everyone check theirs within the 14 day return period (completely reasonable and a nice reminder even if there isn't any concern of bad gps phones floating around). This is how you responded.
You: A Samsung device... with a bad GPS? NEVER!
Yes we all know Samsung's have quirky GPS, sarcasm at this point was already inappropriate and rude considering I was only offering a helpful suggestion.
You: Ummm... its pretty much common knowledge by now that Samsung devices have finicky GPSes. I've had a Captivate, an S3, and an S4. GPS issues with all of them that took some tweaking to figure out.
Assuming I am stupid and all problems I am having our user generated (even if they were, no reason for this, it never hurts to check the basic functionality of your device before your return period). Also rude and inappropriate.
I then respond to being attacked for no reason with an Ummm... of my own. Completely justified.
You: If it was a useless feature, there would be a huge uproar about it all over XDA. Generally when someone goes on the sarcastic defensive, it means they know they did something wrong that they didn't do on their "working" phone. Just saying.
Assuming again I am stupid and only providing a helpful tip for people as some sort of method for making up for stupidity (What did I do to deserve this?) This is also you assuming that there is no such thing as defective phones that aren't widespread in nature (also wrong and proven to be many times)
At this point I try to defend myself again and explain I am not an idiot and your responses to me trying to be helpful are rude and inappropriate.
You: Sarcasm gets sarcasm. Can't take the heat? Get out of the sun.
Makes no sense, since you were the first to start in with the sarcasm, and can't take the heat? XDA is not the wild wild west and you are not some edgy sheriff patrolling the dusty streets for posts that don't have all the information you think they should. This is a forum about a smart phone... get real.
You: You didn't specify any specifics as to what you tried in your first post and you've had cheeky responses to everyone else, what did you expect we were going to do, give you a shiny medal?
This is XDA, not Samsung support forums, not T-Mobile support forums, not Android Central. If you know how to root your phone then you should know how to properly check for a functioning GPS. My post was targeted at the same audience as XDA as a whole is targeted towards. My post was straight to the point and indicated my experience and general advice to check functionality within your return period. I am not here to educate on the specifics of troubleshooting a GPS. There are lots of other posts for that, and if I had, I have a suspicion that the big bad sheriff would be in town again to tell me I was re posting something. I also never indicated that I deserved any kind of credit for posting this. All I had was the bare minimum expectation that some condescending jerk wouldn't give me **** for doing nothing but trying to be helpful. My only "cheeky" response was towards you, no one else.
You: It isn't rocket science.
You're right, it's not.
You: If everyone posted threads saying that people should return a device based on issues they were having but with no details as to what specifically makes that device faulty, we would have people returning devices in droves for no good reason whatsoever.
Never advised anyone to return it, I said to check your GPS within your return period on the off chance there are more than a few defective units.
Thanks for ruining this thread and also being a cancer to this community by deterring others from providing helpful information. Perhaps the only solution for you would be to have XDA run every post by you before allowing it's publication. As someone else indicated, if your reasons for flaming me were truly out of concern for the content of my posts, your first objective would have been to add the information you felt was missed.
