To everyone who contributes to this forum - About xda-developers.com

I have been an unregistered browser of these forums for about a month, but a few days ago I decided to go ahead and sign up. Not sure how much I will be able to contribute, but I have (and am still) learned so much. Its amazing, that little search box up top has answered every single question I had about my android phones. To all the fine folks who run/develope/contribute/post here, THANK YOU!

Thanks kentu,
our main goal is to have satisfied user that enjoy their stay here at XDA and when an user is happy, we are happy.
cheers.

Well I just joined and can not contribute to any of the conversations I would like to contribute to because I do not have 10 posts yet so I guess you can count me as unsatisfied at the moment.. I can't even comment on stuff in the marketplace? So I'm forced to contribute BS to conversations I don't care about to get 10 posts so I can join the discussions I want to join. There seems like there has to be a better way.

Give it time and you'll be able to contribute knowledge that the devs don't get to. While they're making sweet roms for us to use the rest of is are here to help others get to know how they work and contribute fixes for people who get unlucky and brick there phones. It took me a couple of weeks to get enough understanding to be able to help and soon enough you'll be there as well.

I dont have a problem with the 10 post rule. Just take the time go be constructive with your posts, and when you reply to someone post try to add something helpful. As you can see I'm not at 10, but i'll be there soon, no worries.

I'm really enjoying the site

Would have to agree with you kentu3. MOst of the questions have already been answered if you search.
Another thing that I do before posting a question about ROM "xyz" is to read the whole thread on that rom. You would be or not be suprised as to how many times the same question gets asked.
Thanks again kentu3 for this thread, and a big thanks to the DEV's and MOD's who make this site worth visiting

Hi! New here. I for one like the 10 post rule because it helps keeping it clean and when you surpass the limit you have proven yourself worthy.
Coming from a wide range of other communities, also as admin or moderator, I instantly knew XDA's rule was brilliant. Looking forward to contributing in any way I can.
Now I'm gonna try and find out how to find this Thanks-button in XDA app

It is quite an ad-heavy site unless you use a blocker of some description. There's also a mammoth amount of content. I've seen a lot of people mention load times as a downfall, but to be honest I don't notice it taking any longer than some of the other tech sites I frequent
Load times are such a subjective thing though, everyone will differ. What browser do you use? Firefox seems to pop up a lot re: slow load times.

Well I typically do most of my surfing at work, which I use IE right now. Don't have much of a choice. I downloaded Firefox a while back but it never worked right. Not sure if it's because of the firewall or whatever here, (I have no idea how that all works) but Firefox was terrible. I tried to get Chrome but it's blocked too.
The slowness to me isn't really a huge deal, just curious why as other forums I frequent load pretty fast. But the more I surf around here, there is a TON of info.

I use IE (6) at work too Ed, and it's noticeably (horribly) slower than Chrome at home. Likewise, all other options are restriced here for me.
For personal use at home, the latest Chrome with Ad Blocker Pro (free) works extremely well at speeding up the genera;l browsing experience here at XDA. It is a resource-heavy forum so it still takes a little longer to load, but that's the price I pay for the wealth of information here, to me personally anyway
Could be worse, I was on 56k at home until last year when they upgraded our RIM (out in woop-woop)

XDA community +1

Hello XDA community,
I've been looking around this site for a while now, mostly getting cool apps for my HTC Touch Pro2. And this is maybe my 3rd actual post on these forums. But I just wanted to taka a moment to point out the quality of this community.
There seem to be apps and fixed for pretty much eveything, making my phone so much better. But, more important then that, people seem to be very willing to help eachother out. In a non-selfish way. A lot of devs have the option to donate to them, but they never require people to pay for their brilliant work. Users who have issues with their phone often get helped out in a matter of hours.
Having said the above, I'm surprised a rather large community still has these qualities. Therefor I dedicate this thread to XDA
So yea, that's about it
Yeah!
This is a great community
Read, Search, Respect and Enjoy!
Thanks, it is a great community! Have Fun & Happy Flashing!

Why questions and answers? Ok so I set up an account here in xda hoping to get some useful insight about some things for my phone. Well since I just set up account here on XDA can only post here. WELL I GOT NP REPLIES THANKS. So my question now is what is the point of strickening new members to q and a only if no one responds? Guess ill have to stick to phandroid.

I know it can be frustrating at times especially when you need an answer asap.. but there may be a few reasons why no one answers your question
-its been asked way too many times (search for it)
-no one understands your question or knows the answer
-the evo 4g isn't neccesarily "new" therefore there's less traffic in this forum
-People work have other things to deal with and it may be a while (sometimes a long while) before you get an answer.

Basically covered all the reasons why not to reply.
And when your question is about MetroPCS (I checked), you're less likely to get replies because the vast majority of members here use Sprint.
If there's a specific site for phones flashed to other networks, you'd be better asking there. People can't answer what they don't know.

Don't know your question but if it pertains to flashing to other networks maybe try Howardforums

Not going to beat a dead horse here but another tip here that you didn't hear from me is the bump. You posted that question 5 days ago and I assume was 3-5 pages back by now. I usually give my post a day then go back in and post the "anyone figure this out yet?" bump. Usually it will get a response. Like they already said, this forum is over a year old. Most have moved on and the ones that are here with the answers usually only bounce in and out of their own Rom threads.
teh roxxors is one of the RARE people that come slumming back to us from the 3d world to help out lol.

Lol the whole reason I posted this was to see what replies this would get or should I say an answer. The question wasn't really that common I posted I searched everywhere I got an answer right away elsewhere so it couldn't have been the long while issue. No big deal just seems kinda useless to have to post in q and a at first. Give me the secret society/Howard forums feel.

Then please feel free to remain over at the other forums instead of coming here and whining about how you didn't get an answer fast enough about a topic that hardly anyone here has any experience with.
I'm sure there is plenty of experience on this forum. The experienced ones probably don't hang out in the q and a forums that's all. 90 % of the data provisions for metro will be found on xda and if you search it on another site... guess what it links you here. That being said this thread was started to see if it got attention. Which it did. No whining just sharing my thoughts on why we should be able to post anywhere. Since experienced user's don't chill in the q & a?

Experienced users do post in the Q & A section. And to make a thread just to see if it gets attention seems like a trap / childish [to me] , just like a person would pretend to have a fake bf/gf to see if the other gets jealous. Though regardless, experienced user do post here, I've seen it quite frequently. IF there were some question that wasn't answered and someone knows someone who can help, 9/10 that personal would say, "I don't know how to help, but if you look up _______ they can help you."
Also, the only place you can't post til abot 20 posts or so, if the development section. That's only because a lot of new users post Q & A questions there, clogging up that board, when they belong here. You can still read and download rom, just can't post there til ~20 posts, when you are more 'educated' on the forum. No bad mouthing, just saying.
I totally understand cause yea you do see it all the time where at the end of a guide full of roms. Someone asks what's a good rom or where do I find it. We should be able to take a test on experience to bypass the 20 post thing. My frustration came from knowing my answered would of lyed on this forum but no one even viewed it for days. I'm over that's what I get for getting a device that's over a year old. But hey its a big step up from my old one.

XDA School/Message to staff and Students

Remember how in High School or College you would have to DO YOUR RESEARCH to find your information before turning it in to your teacher or professor?...So far in the past 12 months this XDA School Research Skill and Overall GPA has dropped. In this SGSII class of the school, we are bringing our GPA up, and now we are on a level thats "considered passing". I was a new student in this class about 2 weeks ago and everyone made me feel like I was at home, but the rest of the school im not to sure about. XDA school was the one everyone went to about everything Android. Now since the teachers and students are slowly turning in degrees, we are loosing a lot of our students and teachers to other schools. We cannot let this happen because this is where it all started. We have to start gaining the quality of our school back, our prestige is dropping.
So lets get started...
Instead of teachers having to spend extra time assisting students, students should learn to RESEARCH and Experiment on their own time. Teachers only volunteer at this school. No paychecks, pensions, workman's compensation, just breaks and retiremen. Teachers should help students more and explain things more in a detailed fashion. XDA School is changing so we have to change with it. Dont fight it, go with the flow and make it work for everyone. There has to be a line to draw in the middle, where students can help one another, troubleshoot, and have fun with the teachers. Im a teacher myself and comming up with lesson plans that will hold everyone in the class over until I write a new one is not easy. Sleep is lost, donations are good, but overall not good enough to deal with the stress in our personal lives because we all go through it. Competition is always present but thats no excuse for teachers to critique other teachers. We may not be together in reality but we are a community, so lets act like it.
:-D

The worse part about it is, the quality of the issues people report in threads. Most of the time they are "non issue issues" Meaning its not a bug in the ROM just a problem that they are having.
They will post their problem and hope for someone to get a fix for them and get upset when people flame them. The people who can fix the problem have no right to flame either. Fighting fire with fire has become way to common here. The people dont say things like "I looked online in such and such place but i dont understand what its telling me, or this method is outdated any updates on it", nothing like that, that shows they were putting fourth an effort in the first place. It was such a joy for me to research and learn because it led me to create ROMs and themes. I felt a lot better when I figured out how to fix my own problems and it made me a better Rooted android user.
I think te problem is "free stuff" attracts those type of people. Google has done a great thing with the open source stuff. I wish there was a system in place that encouraged organized companies to produce ROMs, granite that means those roms would be pay only and the current system doesn't work with it. You can choose to stick with the stock touchwiz rom OR you could pay to run aosp made by company X or you could download a free rom made by thursday. How much has this community donated to various devs in "hopes" they dev something good?
Android has blown up recently and people like to customize their phone. Old days of only tech geeks using roms are gone. People need answers fed to them. If they paid money for a rom they should be entitled to those answers given to them.
Agreed..

if you want money just have sammy start a thread for you
I was here from the start with the G1, granted out was a few months after the release, buy nonetheless I did my own research asked questions when I was TRULY stuck and solved my own problems by searching the threads/forums. People come in here (XDA) and "flame" one another for asking a question and folks that come in here creating threads and posts REPEATEDLY about the same topic. It honestly needs to be stopped and monitored more closely because all it does is clutter threads and makes it difficult for those trying to do it on their own.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I haven't been here as long as most but since I joined when I purchased my evo it went from thank you to gimme gimme. Not to mention the flame fests, including entire threads filled with pics about the ensuing flame fest. Infractions should start being issued a lot more frequently and even to the point of issuing them to the members who post nothing questions over and over again and get in a tiff when they don't get an answer for "why is my phone crashing after I didn't wipe from cm7 to sense"anyways just wish it would go back to respect and appreciation.

as ridiculous as it seems, Maybe their should be an entire thread dedicated to a Roms "Issues" - I know creating another thread means another one to view, but jesus think about how many times a market error question could be answered by the title of a thread there and the amount of pages it would save on any given rom. I know this is literally bending to the will of noobs who won't research, but if you can't teach them, at least try to confine them

Its an inside joke (a good one too) based on the amount of bounty threads he does and how quick he is to start them.
Reading this thread bummed me out. I'm somewhat new to all of this, and in the last couple of months have learned an INSANE amount about the android OS and how to make it "mine". I would have never been able to do so without the much appreciated help of all the knowledgeable people here on XDA. Yes, I agree, there are a crazy amount of duplicate posts, and pricks, and mindless idiots who for some reason have no issue posting a bash on a hard working dev for no apparent reason (f#& k those morons). Here is my question. What do you think of someone like me, who asks questions when he is stuck, and probably will continue to do so whenever he is hopelessly stuck, but always shows appreciation for valuable help received? There seem to be plenty of people here who enjoy helping noobs like me. I've helped a few, and it felt pretty good.

Just wanted to write a thank you to all the hard work you put in, gratis, for our device.
I cannot overstate how fantastic it is to have a wide selection of roms for our phone, as it gives the user so many options and things to look forward to in terms of updates, functionality, battery life, etc - the list goes on and on.
It's really made this website a haven, as well as an addiction for myself, and has also made my phone usage (and distractions at the office!) go through the roof. Whenever I use my phone in public, on the subway or whatever, I'm hoping there is another user out there who realizes the graphics / interface on my phone is unique, and can inspire them to "achieve" the same. Perhaps I'll even try to do a little programming myself at some point (although my CS101 class in college was probably one of my biggest challenges - and that's for an ME!)
Once again, best regards and much thanks to those hard working devs out there, who deserve nothing but our gratitude and support. Don't thank this post, thank all the devs who put in time day in and day out. Keep on truckin'!
Best regards,
-Dirk
Agreed. I was late to the game with smartphones...buying my DInc2 last July was my first. I was going to wait to root after my warranty was over, but after rooting my wife's nook color, I ventured over to this forum to see what was going on for my phone. Needless to say, it was probably two weeks after browsing this forum that I started enjoying what the hardworking devs have been up to.
I also wouldn't mind venturing into the development aspect of Android but my wife would kill me if I spent even more time on my phone.
I couldn't have said it any better, thanks all you devs and themers for all your hard work

+1 thank you all developers.
I have to agree. I've definitely been enjoying the results of all of the devs' hard work. Keep it up!

Here here!! Another huge thanks to all the devs out there using their personal time to make our phones (and everyone else's for that matter) well worth keeping! There's been plenty of times I wanted to tell a dev how awesome their Rom was but it's taken me some time to get past this 10 post rule. Lol.

haha, I know exactly what you mean. I'm more a lurker than a poster here, but i'm finding myself wanting to mention bugs or issues i'm having with some of the newer builds. That dang 10 comment rule!
...helps when I don't type the image verification code in the title spot
Thanks!

Rethinking Spam policies

Hi,
I am a software developer, installed a rom in my cellphone from this forum and have some bugs to report.
I cant! Why? I'm a new user, need 10 threads... Ok let's post some threads,
I cant! Why? 5 minute beetween eath thread.... Ok, since I love this forum's community and respect your work, let's buy the pro-xda-forum app from the store. Maybe being a premium xda-forum member I can post.
I cant either!
OK, guys. It seem you are preventing both SPAM and potential users in the forum with your rules...
Just a constructive critic.
PD: don't need a reply saying the importance of prevent spam, and so... There are better ways to manage this issue.
Its to stop idiots posting useless crap in the dev topics.
Pointless *****ing from someone who thinks he is better than everybody else. Reported.
We all had to deal with this, and those of us who put the time and effort in are thankful for these restrictions as there would be even more idiots and wasters without them.
Suck it up, take the fall do the time. That made you what you are. That makes you what you are. How long have we been around this thing of ours?

I respect this. I underestand I need to be a more mature user in the forum for this.
Just wanted to feedback the frustration I felt
Obviously I won't leave the forum, it's well organized, and has excelent developers around. And the staff knows this jejej

are the 10 posts that difficult?!
have a little patience and after a day or two(estimated time for 10 constuctive posts and not spam) the thread you trying to post will still be there....

And now it seems that you are using your own thread to get to 10 posts...
Seriously? Is it so difficult to get 10 USEFUL posts?
Just look around! You'll find plenty of noobs asking the same question, all you gotta do is make the day for 10 chaps...
And as a software developer, you should very well know the potential and threat of spam...
Also, the 10 post rule has a deeper meaning attached...it is there so that users inculcate a habit of assisting in the flow of knowledge...
They should realize that the journey is more important than the result...
I see that you have 3 more posts to go...do try and help out a few blokes on the way...
I don't know about others, but I am actually interested on your 11th post in the dev section...

Think I did a useful proposal here. I read in the explanation for this noob-spam issues that if we know of a better alternative to filter users just propose it.
If you read me between lines you have a proper alternative by just letting the ones, like me, who contribute in the xda-premium app to change their user status to something less restrictive.
Don't you think it's a good idea to both enhance the app-buys and give users like me an alternative?
Don't want to mess with the forum, just report a bug since yesterday jejejeje

No, I think it is a really bad idea. A total of $1 to get some sort of 'Special' status? Because the people who want to come on here purely to spam and try to get commercial crap posted won't want to pay $1 to get a quicker and easier route to doing that will they
While your proposed idea does look good on paper, the issue of piracy pops in...
Android is the worst os when it comes to development, from an anti-piracy point of view...
Granted that piracy is rampant on other os's too, but it is much much much more than any other os of its calibre...
I can bet my whole work on xda that more than 80% of all android users have pirated an app or game or theme or whatever...
So, as I said, granting dev area access to all junior members is not such a good idea, as it would actually increase app piracy, rather than push up sales...
2 more to go...

It's nice to share thoughts. I see your point.
Ppl from the forum you may close/delete this thread if you think it's no sense of mine.
As for my eleventh post you are waiting to read, won't be the bug report. Already found another way to contact the Dev. Had plenty of time looking for it between posts xD

If I may, I actually request you to post the link of the thread you were about to post in, and the actual post that you were about to make...
I might be able to make your time on XDA easier and free of major trolls...
Also, a helpful advice:
Since the dev obviously doesn't mind getting contacted through other means (coz he did put up his contact info on the open internet), I urge you to respect other's privacy...
Do remember, the people around here are volunteers, and not Customer Care Representatives...

Thank you for your concern.
This is the ROM-post (FOXHOUND for GalaxyS3): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708371
This is the issue:
Hi, I’m having issues with the phone-number recognition algorithm. Is there any tweak with it here o just a JellyBean error?
Here in Buenos Aires, Argentina we have this numbers: +54 11 0000-0000, if the number is a cellular phone, we add a nine like: +54 9 11 2222-2222. I have all the mobiles in my contactlist like that. But because the ’9′ is not used for internal calls, The network providers don’t forward the nine and I see +54 11 2222-2222.
So When an incoming call / sms says the number is +54 11 2222-222, The phone doesn’t show the proper contact because it’s missing the ’9′ in front of it.
In stock rom from my galaxy S3, my old iphone, and some other roms I tested I didn’t have this issue. Any ideas?
thanks!!!

Contrary to what I had believed, your post doesn't have a close precedent (from what I could conclude through a quick google)
While I do not know the solution or what causes such issues on your device, I can suggest a workaround...
You obviously use call log pretty much...
In my phone, there does appear an option to edit numbers before calling...what this does is simply copy-pasting the number to the dialler where you can freely edit it...
There, its a simple matter of adding a 9 in between...
P.s. I don't run jb, so the exact option may vary

Thank you for your time looking for a fix and the workarround.
I found another one, just putting both phones in the contact works for me. Now I have my regular contacts with both with and without the '9'.
Why do you need the contact with '9' ? Because if I am abroad and have to talk to a mobile phone in my country, the 9 is a must to establish the call.
Why do you need the contact without the '9' ? Just because the phone can't recognize the contact if not.
Really appreciete the devotion in solving others issues. Keep up the good work making this forum the great place it is.
If it was an open source rom, I'm sure you could patch the framework to ignore the lack of 9 for caller id
I'm a bit noob on Android, had I Phone since it's release. But I'll be checking if I can review this in the source.
Was my first thought
