What tablet would you buy?

Currently have PA 3.1 Galaxy Nexus. I love it. Thinking I should get a tablet. Even though I just bought a laptop. Which one though. I'm thinking nexus 10. What are your thoughts.

Do you want a big tablet? I personally prefer the 7-8" form factor as it's easier to handle and carry around. Or you can wait a few months, I imagine Google will be releasing a new tablet during I/O in may.

If I were to replace my Motorola Xoom tablet now, I would get the nexus 10. Although with a tablet its a purchase that lasts you quite a long time. My Xoom is 2 years old and is still functioning perfectly fine for all my tasks.

Tablet Choice
My Xoom is 2 years old and is still functioning perfectly fine for all my tasks.
I also own XOOM (running TeamEos 4.2.1 155 nightly build) and am perfectly happy with it; however, I also got the itch for latest and greatest, and bought an N10 (running stock 4.2.2 stock and rooted) and love it as well.
If you're a GED fan, you can't go wrong w/ N10.

This is a good thing to keep in mind, if Google keeps with their annual update yearly on Nexus line, the N7 and N10 could be having updated versions rolling out. Or perhaps something completely different. Perhaps they don't plan on updating them at all.
That said, for a tablet you have to consider a few things you want. First what size do you want? Then what do you want to do with said tablet? What accessories do you want for your tablet? What is your budget? What OS do you want (perhaps you want a different OS, to experience different apps from a different ecosystem)? What sort of connectivity do you want (HDMI, 3G/4G...etc)? These all could point you to different options.

All valid points. Very much a nexus fan. Can't put a price limit on great tech. Android os obviously. Doesn't matter which one as root and custom ROM is a must. Size doesn't matter. Haha. WiFi connectivity is fine but 3 or 4g is an option too. Really just wanted to know what the census was out there.

Ask yourself, what you want that tablet for?
After buying mine, i find it kinda under used...

I don't need a tablet, but it would be good for the whole family, especially video call and acting as an HTPC. I've decided that it must be able to play HD videos smoothly and have physical HDMI output. This unfortunately rule out the Nexus 7 which I really like the form factor of. The Nexus 10 is overkill for my needs.
So I probably will pick up the Kindle Fire HD, but seem the rom development progress slowly and Amazon OS seems dreadful from an AOSP user. But the price point and HDMI output make it the main contender.
Maybe I'll just go for the Asus TF300T since it's only $50 more used, but I have Asia tablet in the past, good hardware but the proprietary charging port is a turn off.
I'm not ruling out Chinese tablets with rk3066 cpu as well.

I use my phone a hell lot more than I use my tablet. My nexus 7 feels like a big phone that cannot make phone calls. I have all my games on it though.

same here. i at least had the gn10.1 until two weeks ago. sold it and got a ATIV 500t.
i love the spen and the multiwindow is wonderful on the note. i may end up selling my nook hd+ later and get the gn8. i hate that i've become a samsung fanboy, but until someone else makes something better it's what i'll be getting. don't get me started on asus tablets quality control...
so, spen was more important than screen res for me.

Well while looking for a suitable 7" tablet, I went ahead and picked up a Kindle Fire HD and is underwhelmed even after rooting it. Unfortunately the ones on display at WorseBuy are in demonstration mode which lock down everything.. But I didn't want to spend more than $200. Other choices I looked at were:
-Nexus 7 is out of the question due to no HDMI out. I knew this device would be perfect except for this one factor.
-I could order some pretty high performance RK3066 chip Chinese tablet for under $100, but skip them because they have poor built quality, lots of people with battery and charging issues, sketchy to no warranty and probably not much development.
-Other choices available are the Nook tablet which I'm impressed with the high res screen, but quick search shows CM10 currently perform poorly on it and having to fork out $40 for an HDMI adapter.
-Same with Samsung and Asus tablets which also use proprietary ports and needing adapters purchase that I dislike.
-The Acer A110 tablet almost match with what I want with the bonus of microSD slot, except the for horrid screen quality and low resolution. There were the Lenovo tablet which seems to have nice build, but $300.
Main reason to get the Kindle Fire HD was the stereo speaker and standard usb and hdmi ports. Interestingly, this device have the same CPU spec as the Galaxy Nexus, yet the XBMC hardware accelerated test build playback movies smoother on my Nexus than this tablet which stuttered even with 720p MKV videos. This might be a deal killer, but its due to the poor optimization done by Amazon. Probably the only hope of my keeping this tablet would be for a working CM10.1 version for it. My disappoint of the performance of this device is mainly due to the software itself, the hardware are good. Its my first experience with Amazon AppStore and I think its junk compared to the PlayStore(though I know I can side load the PlayStore to this). It seem to be a wall downed garden like Apple, except in this case the interface sucks too.
I am very happy with the quality when connected to the TV however, along with stereo speakers, screen quality and front camera and mic for video calling is nice.

I have a Xoom running cm10.1-nightly now, if I would need to buy a new tablet I would go for a Nexus 10.
Multiple users is probably the best thing that has happened for Android on tablets. The only way to be guaranteed to have this feature is to buy a Nexus.
7" might be too small, but you might get used to it over time.

Well I returned the Kindle Fire HD and got the Nexus 7, naturally. Just fed up with the 'Amazon OS', and even after making my own 'fastboot cable' to be able to boot the device into fastboot mode and install TWRP, installed PlayStore, the device is still very limited and looks like there aren't much developers interested. My chance of ever buying another Amazon device is zero because of their locked down OS design. Too bad because it have a better screen, speaker and seem more durable than the Nexus 7 with hdmi out.
I also saw an Asus Memo Pad Smart 10 for $299 at the store with Tegra3 also, it use standard microUSB port and standard micro-HDMI out and microSD slot, amazing combo, its very rare to find a device with all these standard ports without all the proprietary craps. But being 10" its just not as portable and comfortable for me. I'm just getting the Nexus 7 to be sure I'm happy with the software and developer community, but I'm definitely checking on the development of this device also.

My first gen Nexus 7 just died on me and its too expensive to fix. Is it worth getting a 2nd gen Nexus 7 or just get a used 1st gen?
My son uses it to watch movies (he's 14). I have a Note 2 and don't ever use the tablet.

The 2nd gen N7 is a big upgrade over the first one, in my opinion, and we'll worth the money.

I made that decision a week ago and I'm happy with the 2013. But my old one was doing everything I needed it to. But if its just for your kid to use I'd just get a used 2012 IF you can get a good deal.

For movie watching, the 2013 gives a noticeably better visual and auditory experience, and it's noticeably lighter and more convenient to hold. A new 2013 vs a used 2012 will almost certainly have better battery life, giving him more movie watching time between charges. A used 2012 will certainly work fine, but he'll notice the difference and likely be excited about a new 2013.
The main reason I'd recommend the 2013, though, is that tablets and smartphones (especially those without removable batteries) are generally not made to last. A desktop computer will last LONG after it's technologically obsolete, a quality laptop should give you 5-8 years without crapping out on you, but the likelihood of a tablet or smartphone dying on you in a few years is much higher. It's subjected to rougher conditions and isn't designed for maintenance. Buying a device that may be nearly 1 1/2 years old isn't worth it unless you get a very good deal.

It just turned off one day while copying some files to it and wouldn't come back on. I took it to a repair shop after they "checked" it - I have no idea what they actually did as they kept it for over a week, they said its too expensive to fix. Too expensive as in more than $75.
Thanks for the feedback everyone else. I'll just hold off on getting a tablet for now. My son inherited an almost 2 year old Nexus phone from his older brother and he'll use that for now.
Have any of you considered any other tablet other than the Nexus 7? I can get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8" tablet using my airmiles, but wonder how that compares to a Nexus 7 other than the obvious size difference.
The resolution and pixel density on the Samsung aren't as good as the Nexus 7. I wonder what the user experience is like though. Are those spec differences that much noticeable?

Did you pop the back cover off and make sure it's not the loose battery cable which is a known issue ?

This is why I love this forum. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try this tonight when I get home. So the cover just pops off easily? And if the cable is is loose, its just a matter of pushing it back on to whatever its connecting to?

Yes. I've fixed a couple like this. Back cover pops loose with a guitar pick or a credit card. Battery connectors pop loose and the fix is adding a piece of tape. One of the ones I fixed the battery itself was loose and I had to add tape to stop it from flopping around and making itself loose.

Watch this video so you know how to take it apart, I replaced the screen on my old n7, was really easy and I'm no expert!! .... but if all else fails the new one is way better and you wouldn't regret buying one

I just looked at the the two samsung tablets, I forget their exact names. Note something and the TAB 3.
I liked the more colorful interface, and the wider aspect ratio. One of them has a nice thin bezel all the way around. I like the wider aspect ratio because it gives it a bit more screen height in landscape mode. Which I don't use very much except when something doesn't render very well.
What I didn't like was that they are on older versions of Android, and there is less development for them. And then there is the price difference.
The Note tablet has the S stylus and the cool things it can do, but I know from my Note 2 phone I don't use it.
For me I would have felt like I was paying more and getting less. But I realize that is based on my fairly specific criteria. If I didn't have the Google N7 one of those tablets would be what I would have.

It's pretty much down to this, the g pad 8.3 and the soon to the released Samsung 8.4 pro (but I have a feeling it's gonna have a premium price tag and won't be a contender). I hand write all my notes so a keyboard, and word processing apps aren't necessary. Is the premium for the LG G pad worth it for the faster processor and micro sd slot?

I had two and both had screen issues. The first one had three spots that didn't register touches very frequently and my second one had grounding issue that got so bad that it would shut itself off. I got my money back and plan on getting the EVGA tegra note 7. It doesn't have a 1080 screen but still better than 720 and it runs with the tegra 4 1.8ghz processor that gets better benchmark scores than the nexus 7.

I really like my nexus 7. Its a great small tablet and has nice development support (which is a plus for me). If you need more storage you can buy a otg cable for cheap on amazon.
Yes, I have noticed the touchscreen problem for my device (doesn't always register my tap) but it is not that frequent for me. My device's touchscreen problems does not seem as bad as what I have heard from others.
If you are considering specs, then it depends how you plan to use your device in terms of your usage and how much CPU power you need. I can say that my nexus runs very smoothly and I have no complaints there. You can install a custom kernal if you want to overclock and increase performance. I also have an lg g2 which has a 2.26ghz processor and my nexus 7 runs just as well and smooth for my usage.

I'm not a fan of the appearance of the EVGA tablet, it's too out there. I love EVGA products and they have great stuff, my video card is even from them. What about the kindle fire hdx? It has a beefy processor and is $20 more than the nexus. But my only gripe with it is the lack of development support and locked boot loader. And can i install the google play store on it if it's rooted and flashed with a custom rom?

Should I Get a Tab 3 10.1?

Hey guys, I currently have a MacBook Air 11, and I am looking for a tablet that I can use for when I don't wanna pull out my Macbook.
I am trying to spend less than $300. So I can get a refurbished Tab 3 10.1 for $225. However I can also get the first Galaxy Note 10.1(first edition) for $250.
I also can get an iPad 3rd gen for about $275.
So I am a bit conflicted. I just want something cheap that I can browse the internet on, play a few games, and use SmartGlass for my XboxOne

If look around get a nexus 10 for under 300 or nexus 7, if not just go with refurbished one

Depends what your users are going to be. Being you have a Mac, I say go with iPad (as much as I hate saying that). You already have apple asps and usernames that would make it easier for you.

Well I do have a Macbook, and an iPhone 5. But I am trying to get out of the apple ecosystem.
I'm going to get an android phone when my upgrade is up.
Basically my uses are going to be: Using while I'm in bed, on the couch to mainly surf the web, email, play a few games here and there, and use for SmartGlass for my Xbox. If it's anything more than that, I'll just use my Macbook.

I think it is wise to switch as long as you've done your research first. It can be expensive switching ecosystems, but Android tends to be much cheaper that iOS from what I've witnessed at least. But that is only part of what makes Android wonderful. As for the Tab 3 10.1, right now, I'm struggling because I wanted it to have user switching. That's something supported by Jellybean, but alas, Samsung has omitted it from this build. So I've been searching everywhere for custom ROMs but it seems that no one is developing for it because it runs on Intel and people aren't used to that structure just yet. All I can do it root is and tweak things here and there, but not what I want it to, so my point of view is a little skewed toward dislike.
If you have the funds, I would recommend the Nexus 10 32GB. Unfortunately, Nexus devices don't have microSD expansion like the Galaxy devices, but it has all the features it should and it would be easy to find custom development for it once you get bored with the stock UI.

TBH I personally would NOT recommend you buying the tab 3 10.1. I'd rather buy a Nexus 7 2013 or a Nexus 10 or a LG Gpad 8.3.
thsi is because of the silly Intel processor within the tab and Android not really cooperating with it.
You'll be better off running an ARM processor.
Just my 2 cents. Hope you enjoy whatever tablet you buy.
And as much as I dislike Windows 8 it works well on tablets. So that is also a good choice IMO

Well I don't need the user switching, I mean this is just going to be a device that I use when I am not using my Macbook for fun or leisure. It wont be something that I rely on.
How would you say the tegra 3 compares to the intel chip in the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1?

How much faster is the Nexus 7 2013 going to be than the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1? I am considering the Nexus 7 now possibly.

I had a dell streak 7 and it had a poor following for development, but I used it enough to know my next tab would be a 10 inch.(7 inch Too Small) I just got this tab 3, and it is killer. It doesn't have any custom ROMS that are drastically different that stock, Still...it is running the newest version of Jelly Bean, and really doesn't need "upgrading" It is so snappy and fast, I am tickled to death with it. I love the stock OS, and I figure by the time I get bored with it Cyanogen Mod will be available for it. Of course my view is also skewed because I was struggling with a Dell Streak 7 (slowpoke) before I got my Tab 3. I also enjoy (watching) the developers forum for this device, it's very entertaining because they discover new things about this tablet every day it seems. That stuff is mostly over my head right now, but I hope to learn more, so I can contribute in the future. Good luck with your choice...I just love mine.

I just bought a Tab 3 10.1 from Amazon last week. I also purchased a leather case with Bluetooth keyboard to go with it. The order total was 311 for me and well worth it. I also have a Galaxy s4.
I think if you are looking to switch to the Android ecosystem I would recommend setting up a Google account now if you do not have one already. The one thing I like about Google and the android environment is the built in cloud environment.
I am on my 4th Android phone and first tablet and have never had to transfer or backup contacts, settings or files. I log into the new device it automatically downloads the settings wallpaper and apps I use. The contacts are stored in the Google account on Google servers. I have seen even the most experienced iDevice users try to mimic this seamless integration but fall short (though not impossible).
My only advice in order to make sure you never have to back up files and pictures (with caution) is to utilize Google drive if you do not already.
When I first moved to Android from Blackberry the selling point was that my contacts are stored in my Google account. Saved my life many times.

Well guys, I went to BestBuy to check out the tablets.
I looked at the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1, Note 8.0 and 10.1 and the Nexus 7.
The two tabs seemed a bit sluggish when getting in and out of apps, and the load times in chrome were a little slower compared to the Notes.
The Note 10.1 is the perfect device for me, I absolutely loved it, but it's way out of my price range. But I also loved the Note 8.0.
The Nexus 7 seemed nice too, but it was in some demo mode so I couldn't actually open apps and such.
How does the Note 8.0 compare to the Nexus 7? At this point I think I like the Note 8.0 more, purely based on form factor.
Edit: How much faster is the Note 8.0 than the Tab 3?
Also how does the Note 8.0 compare to the original Note 10.1?

As far as I am concerned NO MORE SAMSUNG. Samsung just doesn't support…update the system on any of their tabs. I am selling my Galaxy 10.1 note today and getting something else. Sold my S4 and got a nexus 5 and am very happy.

Well that is interesting.
If you had to recommend me a tablet, what would you recommend? Other than the Nexus 7.

I'd Recommend the LG Gpad 8.3 Google Play Edition as it has a slightly bigger screen.
I do NOT recommend Samsung devices as they have a CRAP LOAD of bloatware installed. Quite a few of those things run constantly using up RAM/CPU and eating battery life and in return, they give nothing.
I'd rather have an AOSP based ROM without the 'goodies' than a stock ROM with them.
I've owned 4 samsung devices so I think I can speak for them
This is my skightly skewed opinion. you should decide what you buy. We are just giving you advice

Did you get the Nexus 7? I was going to until I found that some of the 2013 model had screen/hardware and touchscreen issues. My wife has the gtab 2 10.1 which I put cm 4.3 and a custom overclocked kernal on and it runs smooth and quick. After using it a while I wanted something a bit smaller for myself and settled on the gtab 3 8.0. I like the size much better and the screen is plenty big and bright. It is quick and responsive with the stock rom. There is some development happening for it including an overclocked kernal and I am waiting patiently for a stable rom.
If you bought the Nexus, let us know how it is. I hope it's one of the good ones.

[Q] Tab S 10.5 for me. What should I get my 3 kids for minecraft etc

I have hesitated to ask this here but after searching for answers think it is relevant. I am going to buy the Tab S 32GB for myself after much research. I am going to get my 3 kids tablets for Christmas for Minecraft, email and texting etc. They will be used on wifi only. I would like to spend $200 for each. I think they would be best suited with smaller tablets and have looked at the Nexus 7. I see the 2013 model has 2GB ram. I have been using Samsung phones and have been rooting them mainly with stock rooted ROMs. I don't anticipate rooting the kids tabs unless the bloat and space makes it necessary. I like sd slots and removable batteries but realize they might not be necessary for the kids. If you have a Tab S or other Samsung tab, what would you get for 11 and 12 year old kids? Minecraft and YouTube are the most likely uses.

Nexus7 2013 is a perfect choice, no bloatware, snapdragon onboard, updates from google and from xda.

Also LG 8.3 is nice and comes at a compettitive price.
There are several physics games I like for kids,doodle physics for example.

The galaxy tab s is too fragile. 1 drop and this thing breaks! Get an galaxy tab 3 or 4 if you want a Samsung tablet. But the nexus 7 2013 is a good choice as well.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking Nexus 7 and your replies confirm it is solid for the use intended.

The Samsung Pro 8.4 is on sale this weekend at BB. Still has a great screen compared to most other tablets and you'll be able to link all together to share stuff with each other.
