[Q] Files missing after rom flash, but no storage freed up? - LG Optimus G (International)

I hope you understand my problem. I've also searched, but didn't find anything similar. To start with, this phone (E975) has no expandable memory. but it still had internal and external storage, which I saw while surfing with a file explorer. Now, after flashing a new rom. From Paranoid (4.3) to liquid (4.3), I found that some very important files and folders have gone missing, though no storage had freed up. So when I look at my SD CARD storage analyser, it says that I have 10GB of free memory available, but only 6GB is used of total 25GB (total ofcourse 32GB, which is taken by the system), so I should have approximately 19GB of free memory.
I'm quessing, the files from external are missing, but they are nowhere to be found. Ticked hidden files in ES Explorer, though still no sight. Not to mention recovery, didn't find them there also.
This has happened before, when I flashed a rom coming from 4.1.2 to a CM. Then I also noticed my files missing. That time I was able to restore my nandroid backup. This time all my many nandroid backups had gone missing. I wasn't able to restore.
Guys, i'm lost. If any part of my explanation is not understandable due to English not being my first language, give me a chance at rephrasing.
Regards.

your previous stored files are there in /data/media folder..chk it!!

why the phone uses 2 (or more?) locations for the exact same thing? i have the exact same files in both locations (i am stock) and whenever i make a change to one location the change is happening to the other also! i just ask cause its kinda strange :S

16gb Maguro: After multiple flashes; OS not seeing full storage?

All; not sure if this is the right place and I didn't see a similar thread on search.
I've swapped roms a few times on my GSM 16GB nexus; and after my latest (~month old AOKP nightly to recent CM10 nightly); my available internal storage appears to have shrunk; and I can't install apps.
Via 'Storage Settings'; I see 13.33GB Total space, but when it sohws individual usage; it shows ~3gb total between 'Apps, Media, Downloads, Available'; as in it's not seeing the other 10GB of space? In the graph at the top visualizing the space usage; it has a mysterious Grey color representing the missing 10GB of space.
Any ideas how to recover that space; and how I can avoid losing it in the future? (I don't mind losing data currently on phone; but ~3gb is not enough for daily use). I have the full version of Rom manager; I have yet to play with the Partition SD Card utility there (or a similar partition tools in app store..) as I wanted to find out what I had done wrong as I fix it.
Thanks,
Chris
Edit: I need to learn to read.
A screenshot would help, but if you're including Available in the 3GB then you probably have some CWM backups hiding somewhere. They eat space, but aren't picked up by Android when it calculates storage space.
In my experience the biggest culprit in "missing" space is nandroid backups.
:Edit: I need to learn to read too :cyclops: IOW I agree wif Cilraaz. :silly:

Thanks for idea; and yea; including 'Free'; i have ~3gb of space.
I'd post a screenshot but I don't seem able to email them off the device currently... (It let me take them; but gmail's giving me a 'nospace' error); and you guys seem to understand what I meant.
I don't have a 'Nandroid' folder anywhere that I can find to delete/pair down backups; and I removed all my clockwork mod backups; and it didn't make a difference on device reboot...

Playing around in CWM Recovery; i attempted, 'Free unused backup memory"; and I jumped from ~1gb 'Available' to 3.42gb 'Available'. Crisis has been averted for now; but I'm still missing ~6gb... (No current CWM backups)
Mine also says 13.333 available...
EDIT: Nevermind, misunderstood you.

I ran into this problem. Perhaps this will help you.
Starting with 4.2, Google changed the way your sdcard is mounted. It used to be mounted at /data/media. Now its mounted at /data/media/0. They changed this because of the new Profiles. My problem was that I was using an older recovery. One that would save my nandroids at /data/media/TWRP. After updating it now uses /data/media/0/TWRP. So I would check the /data/media folder and see if there is any old backups there. You will have to use adb or something similar.
Maybe u should lock and then unlock the bootloader on your phone this helps solve most problems.u can then flash cm10 if that's what your using. And as said in an earlier post make sure you have the latest version of cwm recovery.
Please press the thanks button of this works.

So, you're suggesting the OP wipes their storage? Why would you suggest this without stating that: 1. data loss will happen and 2. you should backup your phone before doing this?
OP, runderekrun had a good suggestion. Check /data/meda for rogue CWM backups (and make sure you're up to the most current version) or multiple /0/0/0 folders (if you've flashed multiple 4.2+ ROMs).
I experienced this one already. That's when i flash a AOKP nightly 4.2.1 based. When i'm in 4.2 i can't see all the files from my 4.1.2 ROM. I switched back to 4.1.2 then copied all files from root folder to the 0 folder. Try to use Root explorer. It will show you emulated and legacy storage.

[Q] Storage Full of "Other"

So I've noticed my storage is full of "other" - as per in the attached screenshot.
How do I find what that is, and do you reckon I can delete it?
It can't be cache stuff, can it?
I reckon it might be a Titanium Back up or a nandroid, but would like to know where to look. I'm back on stock and unrooted, and if this is something I can take off the phone and put on a spare hard drive, that would be great.
Thanks for your help...!

It could be the pre-installed apps.
When you first bought your HOX, you check your settings and storage, only 2.11GB available on internal storage (apps memory), and more than 25GB available on virtual SD card or phone memory.
Some of the custom roms on rooted HOX has this functionality that we can be able to view the full details of what is consuming our memory.
i use ES file explorer for this it can run an analysis of the sd card and tell what the folders are that take up the most space
u can also analyze a folder instead of sd card to see what map or file takes the most space
u will see if its junk or maybe some old games you dont have installed anymore
and can simply delete them after
Its everything you downloaded, music , folders , pictures etc

No it's not music, folders, pictures. I have same problem and ask HTC for help.
Man you should try to factory reset and clear storage, if that doesnt work and your phone come with used 4gb (like mine), you should send it to service. Already not found any better way to fix it. Sorry if i'm wrong.

I got a reply from HTC this morning that this is what system takes which is a total BS as system is only 1.05 Gb in my case it is /sys folder which is showing to contain nearly a MILLION folders and 500000 (yes five hundred thousand) files.
They really dont know what they are telling.
Odp: [Q] Storage Full of "Other"
I'm now at hospital so cant send it to HTC. But i try send it next week. I tell you what's result. From HTC this is only way to fix it. I'm not expert just saying HTC's solution. Wait, may some one know other solution, i will tell you how it's going next week when get phone from service.

I've got the same problem! Looking inside the phone with a root explorer the amount of all the folders is around 350 mb with a custom rom, all the folder except one ( /sys ). The folder /sys has something wrong cause the explorer just keep saying calculating...
Is there anything we can do to have back all these GB?? Thanks
Have anyone try to factory reset?
I have got this problem too.
I have tried "make more space" by delete apps.
But "Other" is nothing change.:silly:
If you have a backup or migration tool installed check if you have any backups stored and also check the temp files of that backup app.
The othet section is the pre installed apps and the system itself.

I had 9.45GB of storage in "other"
I tried finding what it was taking that much space and discovered nothing in particular.
Some time before, I realized my HTC One Mini 2 was full. I was replacing data to my Ext. SD Card. Then I realized that, no matter what I replaced, the 9.45 GB remained the same/Increased.
I think there is some kind of TEMP file for stuff you deleted/replaced. So you could get it back if you deleted something by accident, because after restarting my phone, only 5.5GB of "other" storage was left.
However, this is still alot of storage, and I can't find what the 5.5GB contains in any file explorer. Does anyone have a clue about how big the OS and Sense layer are? Thanks in advance

Storage problems

Hi guys,
on my HTC One X I've got under App Storage 4.79 GB used on 6.76 GB total and under Phone Storage 1.40 GB used on 25.24 GB total.
This is the situation just after I installed a new custom rom on the phone, so without any application from the market or pictures, music and videos!
So why my phone has 4.72 GB of "other" in the App Storage? Is it a bug? Can I fix it?
Hope someone knows how to get all that GB back.
Thank You!

use astro file manager. you will see what file is inside that "other".

I never really checked what those 4 plus GB are, maybe system files? but I'm pretty sure it's normal. I see some other guys asked this question, and also my phone has similar data usage.
Not sure if you've solved this yet, but if you grab SD Maid off of the play store you can use that to find out what's taking up all the space. It's also pretty useful in general for clearing out junk files etc.
I've downloaded SD Maid and I can see 328Mb in /data and 624Mb in /system. These together with the small folders are gonna make not more than 700Mb in total, so the 4Gb must be in the folder /sys that SD Maid doesn't even scan. I have also noticed some loops in the /sys folder, something like enter in a subfolder and find yourself in another directory always inside /sys but in a different location. What should this folder contain?
Someone else might have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the /sys directory just contains android system files, so I doubt your phone would be too happy if it had glitched out enough to start duplicating files in there.
Did you wipe external storage before installing the rom? Could be that it's just leftover files on the sd card from apps you had installed on the previous rom.
Might be a bit of an extreme solution, but you could backup all your apps, messages etc, migrate the backups across to your pc then wipe absolutely everything from recovery before doing a fresh install of the rom. I know twrp recovery lets you wipe the system partition and external storage as well as the regular stuff (cache, dalvik etc), so just blitz the phone and start fresh. Should be a pretty fail-safe fix, just make sure you transfer everything you want to keep onto the pc before wiping, ready to be transferred back afterwards.
When you press advanced view on SD Maids first page, it will show you all found partitions.
/sys is mostlikely not the issue here.
I'm not sure how the partitions are set up on your device, but usually installing a new ROM does not wipe the internal sdcard location.
Where are the 25GB "Phone storage" located ? on the internal sdcard?
I'm not an expert but I don't think that the folder /sys contains android system files, or better it probably does but not 4 GB otherwise all the HTC One X should have the App Storage full of 4 GB of system files, instead seems to be just a problem of few phones. When I installed the custom ROM I did wipe everything, format all the folders and try to make the phone as clean as possible but the GB are still there.
SD Maid doesn't show me the /sys folder, and if I put together all the others folders that it shows to me the total amount doesn't reach the 4 GB, more like 800 Mb.
The HTC One X has two storages, "App Storage" (6.76GB total) and "Phone Storage" (25.24GB total). App Storage is the one where the kernel and rom are installed and that most of the applications doesn't touch, while the Phone Storage is like a normal SD Card for the other phones that can be formatted etc.
Same here.. "It's not a bug, it's a feature"
Is there an application able to make a file log of what is inside a folder? I was thinking that maybe someone who doesn't have this problem, could make a file log with the list of folders and files of the directory /sys and so we can see what does mach and what does not...
:good:
you thanked yourself???
You should be able to just extract the information from the ROM you have installed.

Do you know how to extract these informations? From the ROM or from an application? I'm on OrDroid 12.5.3 at the moment.

I reached to your post after many hours of googling. Did you ever get any solution of your problem. I'm asking because i have the exact same problem in app storage - other. Other got 4.90GB of my App storage.
Please let me know.

Help with SDcard0/emulated/etc...

I know this has been asked numerous times in alot of different threads but I was hoping by starting this someone would be kind enough to elaborate and explain exactly what is needed and what is not. I know I should have plenty of storage on my phone but it seems I dont. I have 2.23 GB left and I know I should have more. If anyone is willing to explain more in detail it would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I am currently using Rootbox and it has been the only rom I've used since rooting my phone.

Bump. I'm having a bunch of issues with this. I went from stock rooted to AOKP, and now TWRP won't recognize my backup so that I can go back to stock. It's really annoying. I'm not having any luck with any partition I copy the backup to. Does anyone know of a way to restore stock factory partitioning? Even doing an LGNPST of ZV9 and then taking the OTA doesn't fix the partitioning. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm out of ideas.
Use a root file browser your stock storage is in mnt/shell/emulated so once your in that Ares look for your twrp folder copy the backups inside it then paste then into the twrp in sdcard0 ..... to sum up you haven't lost anything these cm/aosp ROMs create a new storage (sdcard0) so just take anything you normal store in your stock storage which is now mnt/shell/emulated and place it in sdcard0 or redirect apps looking for files to look in those places
I'm not sure about deleting those files in the stock storage though unless you have no intention in returning to stock cause if you delete them then return to stock they will be missing and vice versa

You likely still have the old "sd card" from a previous stock install. Use a root file explorer, like ES File Explorer, and navigate back to the root directory. You will likely have a directory called "mnt". Navigate to that folder and open the "sdcard" folder. You'll find whatever you used to have on your sd card from previous installs. I would save whatever you want to your new sd card directory and delete the entire mnt/sdcard directory. It might not allow everything to be deleted, but it should fee up that space you're missing.
*Note: The old files could be under mnt/emulated or some such directory, I dont remember. Just look around that folder to find those old files.
Hope that helps!
I'm having the same issue with this folder. I see that it is mirrored because i added a file in the sdcard0 folder it showed up in the sdcard folder. But i also found the same folders in the mnt folder. So are they all mirrored files or are they actually taking up space? Is there a way to format the space? Will the rom still boot up? Also, had that 0 folder on my sdcard, but am not able to delete it just rename the folder.
I'm running nexOGen 1.6 if it makes a difference. Hope someone can help.
thanks!

[Q] Storage almost full?

I've looked around the forums to see if this has happened to anyone else before, but I can't seem to find anything. I got a notification today that my internal storage is almost full and to delete stuff to get more room. But when I look at my storage folder in File Manager, my storage is only 5.37 GB. Weird.
So I opened the storage thing in settings to see why my storage is so full and what I see is that there is something in the "Other" category taking up 24GB of space! Everything else adds up to ~5.37 GB as expected. Now, I have NO Idea where this 24 GB of data is or where it came from. I can't find anything in my filesystem that looks like it has a large amount of data in it. I'm at a loss.
If it is relevent, I did just recently have an issue which I posted here. O resolved the issue by doing what someone suggested and I installed a recovery.zip with TWRP in RUU mode, and once I got into recovery I did a factory reset, and then reinstalled ViperOne (I tried installing the 2.10 stock RUU after the factory reset but for some reason it would't boot, but it did work when I installed ViperOne)
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Is it your nandroid backups? That is what accounts for most of my other category.
I don't have any nandroid backups. Anyways, I checked my TWRP directory just in case I did backup but just don't remember... nothing there. I've checked just about every directory in my phone's filesystem and I absolutely can't find anything that accounts for 24 GB of used storage space.
Is it possible that my phone got partitioned somewhere down the line and there is an entire other partition hoarding all the storage space? If so, how would I check/fix that?

It just shows a bunch of small files, no bigger than about 5 MB. TWRP is taking up 0 B in my storage since i never backed up.
I really didn't have anything of utmost importance on my phone since all my backups are on my computer/on google drive, so I went ahead and did a format data/factory reset and reinstalled a ROM. Now the "Other" takes up 7 GB of storage. Still shows no files larger than a few MB when I click on Miscellaneous. So I don't know for the life of me where this "Other" is coming from... but at least its not 24 GB that are being hoarded anymore.

Are you sure you don't have a couple backups hiding in /data/media/0/clockwork mod/backups ?
This is the typical cause for the Other being unaccounted for.
It's not on your sd card...
Just making sure you're not overlooking it.

It's not possible that /data is empty .
You need to use a root enabled file explorer, with root enabled, I use es file explorer.
I would enable root and also enable show hidden files and folders and look one more time to be sure.

Okay, I thought I already gave my file explorer root access... Oops. Anyways, now that I can see everything... My /data folder contains ~3 GB of data... Of which, ~2.5gb is already accounted for in my storage space from apps and pictures. I still can't find where the extra 7gb is from. The only thing with substantial amount of data on my filesystem is /proc....
Oh and now my "Other " storage usage has gone up from 7.0 GB up now to 7.6 GB in just the past couple hours. And I'll note I haven't done anything notable to my phone since then save for add like two apps. (In the process of writing this it went up from 7.6gb to 7.8gb)

Are there any apps that could be causing this? Look at the space your apps are taking up and see if something looks like it could be using all that space
I would do a factory reset, and then an ruu. Do the setup to access the os, but dont sign in to google or other accounts or install any apps. If it still missing space, my guess is its a hardware issue.
I believe 7GB taken up in "other" is normal. I have a couple back ups and roms taking up some space. Get rid of those and I'm right around 7GB. There was a little discussion about this when the phone came out...I bet if you flashed an AOSP rom, you'd be showing less than 7GB in "other". Sense roms are big and I think we only have access to 25 of the 32GB on the phone.

That's what I thought to until my "Other" storage space kept going up.
Yesterday when I went to bed it was at about 7.8 GB, this morning when I woke up it was at 10 GB... Something Is slowly eating up all my storage space and I can't figure out what.

I actually tried that. For some reason I still can't boot after flashing an ruu. It just hangs forever on the white htc splash screen.
I did, however, format my data, did a factory reset, and flashed a different Rom (UnsenseOne). The problem was seemingly fixed until my storage space slowly started getting eaten up by whatever it is that my phone is showing as "Other".
Last night when I went to bed it was at 7.8 GB being used up by "Other", this morning when I woke up is up to 10 gb being used up. So somewhere along the night while I was sleeping and not even touching my phone 3 GB of storage space was used up on my phone...
