Nexus 5 vs s4 with Google Edition rom? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Can anyone comment on the speed and stability of a s4 with a ge rom vs the new Nexus 5?
I've tried running Aosp roms on my note 2 when I had it and they always ended up being to buggy.
I love my Nexus 5 and stock Google experience but I'm wondering if the s4 might be a better fit. Mostly for the option to swap out the battery and that gorgeous AMOLED screen.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

in my experience, the GE official roms are pretty stable, but empty. I usually have some sort of highly custom rom on my phones, like carbon or aokp. They bring tons of customization that spoils you. But AOSP in the galaxy S line is far from stable. They work fine sometimes, some updates break something, etc.
I am personally wiating for KK GE for my SG4. I will install Xposed framework to customize it however i need it. At the end is Samsgun own FW (ROM) and things will work better than any other AOSP based rom.

The s4 ge roms are just like having a nexus device in S4 hardware. Its a very stable build that is a mix of touchwiz and aosp. Its a win win it gives you the stability of stock with the greatness of stock Google.

the jellybomb looks nice.looks like it have tons of features
PA FTW
For me having tested only a couple for the last week, and being new to Android, Paranoid Android is the way to go. Been able to change DPI/ UI layout per app is priceless, all I need to complete it is figure out stuff about kernels and flash one that let you undervolt CPU/GPU to max battery life. As dingokevin said, you have to figure out yourself, give PA a try and see if you like it.

hi.

on the CM10 build that's available today, the feature like getting a small dot on the screen when hovering the pen over , is gone. I guess its because CM ROM has removed all bloatware (like S Note).
I have no idea if the special pen features will come back on a later build of CM10. i really hope so
CM10 nightly build is ready for N7100! Out today guys. :good:

Revolution is great.
Been a CM user for many years. No way am I running it on GN2.
Not needed for speed...and bloatware easily dealt with via Titanium...but mostly, the Samsung NOTE features are just too cool. CM in addition to being a mute point on this device, negates what makes the Note the Note.
Been using ottoman's ROM a couple of days. I like the glass theme and colors. Battery life is good and overall smooth

handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)

Is it only me or is stock rom the smoothest ?

I just flashed Pa3+ and for some reason I feel like stock is the smoothest but I really need the themes.
Is there a 100% stock rom but with themes ?
P.s. That's a GSM phone.
These two are the smoothest ROMs I've ever seen. Vanir is more stock, and a bit faster imo. Atom is based on Vanir with some added options. I'm sure if you tried either one you won't be disappointed.
Also I recommend flashing AK Kernel. Vanir + AK is the fastest my phone has ever been.

I used to use STOCK for a few days, it really is smooth, but the interesting thing that can make any rom fast as stock is just to optimize it according to your necessities and "trim" it one a week to fix reading speeds of the internal memory. (LagFix from Google Play does the job)
I have actually never tried the stock 4.2.2 ROM, I am always flashing atom, vanir, cm10.1, aokp, xylon, and all that.
vanir is the smoothest for me
Yes, stock rom is the smoothest.
In my opinion Galaxy nexus rom development is boring because all roms look like each other and at the end the stock is the best.
That's one of the reasons why people choose paranoid and their hybrid engine... to get something different! I love their job for bringing real innovations to android.

[Q] Purchase recommendation

I currently have a Tmo Galaxy Note II and I have a problem. I love AOSP based roms, but due to Sammy not releasing binaries the 3d gaming performance is horrible on AOSP and CM roms compared to TW. I was thinking about buying an S4 but I'm not sure which is the best one to get. I immediately thought the 9505G, but found out that the "G" is just a google-looking skin on top of TouchWiz framework that Samsung provides. Basically, I want the variant that has the best developer support. Would the i9505G, or M919 be my ticket?
Those three device recommendations all go under the assumption that AOSP roms perform well on this device, is that true? Please don't recommend a Nexus for me, I realize that's the device I should have but with no sdcard slot it just won't work unfortunately. Thanks in advance!
If you don't care for aosp get tge Google version or touchwiz as you can always flash the OFFICIAL s4 Google edition rom.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
The 919 and 9505 roms are relatively interchangeable as long as you flash a kernel made for the device. So as far as best developer support you can't go wrong.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Either beside 9505G
That's what I needed to hear, the M919 will take 9505 ROM's as long as you have the M919 kernel. Can anyone comment if the newer 3D heavy games on the play store perform as well on AOSP as they do on TW? Games like Asphalt 8, Reckless Racing, Prince of Persia, etc..?

I personally dislike aosp mainly because of the extremely poor camera. But TW will NEVER be as smooth as aosp. Touch has alot of stuff un the background while aosp is alot smaller less ram etc. If you don't mind the crappy camera and want better gaming performance go with aosp. (imo)
Just flash both roms test itbfor yourself. We dont know exactly yoyr likes. Lol
But If you flash touchwiz rom try infamous s4 v7.0 (bestRom)

[POLL] Touchwiz-based ROMs vs. AOSP-based ROMs

Which do you prefer?
Both. Hybrid that is.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
For whatever reason, I get significantly better battery life using tw roms vs aosp. I prefer the look of aosp though. Battery life is winning the battle right now and I'm on TW
I have always preferred an aosp rom but they do not always offer all the goodies.. like mhl, or t-mobile wifi calling for example.. definitely always had better battery life for me, more free ram etc..
sent from my AnthraX'd m919
I dunno. That's a tough one. They both have their pros and cons. I can't honestly say that I think one is better than the other. If I had a low end device that might be a different story. I've been sticking with TW lately.
Ever since the s3 I've been sticking to tw since they offer some goodies that i find convenient.. And also the battery life has been way better for me

TouchWiz + rovo89s Xposed framework + one of the many tweaked kernels = better than any AOSP rom I've used. Just my own preference though ^_^
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
After trying pretty much every ROM compatible with my TMO S4, I keep coming back to the TMO TW ROMs. Most importantly, you can't get wi-fi calling any other way. But, as Slim TW ROMs have become more common and my comfort level with making changes has risen, I have given up the idea of dual booting with an ASOP/GE/MIUI/etc. ROM as my daily driver & TW for wi-fi calling, and am now back to focusing on getting as stripped-down a TW as possible. I care nothing for eye candy and just want the quickest & most stable setup, and TW has fit the bill best for me.
TW (by a slight margin)
I prefer TW because of the camera
AOSP is still very snappy but TW is catching up to that standard (for me)
I use stock TW unrooted 4.3 btw
For me it depends on what is available at the time. Right now I've got the latest 4.3.1 cyanogenmod nightly:
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
AOSP all the way, I hate touchwiz it's so ugly.
TouchWiz seems to have much better battery life. I do prefer stock because I hate a lot of extra cruft but if that can be removed, it's not so bad.
Plus Wi-Fi calling is awesome for battery life.
I know a certain someone has gotten wifi calling to work on aosp.. Still waiting to get a hold of our myself tho..

On the S4 AOSP?
I know it works on AOSP for the HTC One, but if you know someone who has it working on the S4 AOSP roms, you should advise that person that there is a considerable bounty built up of people willing to click the donate button a few times for a working installable Wifi Calling APK.
interesting to read the comments. I've been going back and forth between TW and AOSP ROMS. Is having the newest Android release the only major advantage of AOSP over TW? I don't think the look of AOSP is a valid reason since you can install launchers (i.e. Nova Launcher) to get the AOSP look on a TW ROM.

what changes does samsung make kernel side? Are the improvements made to the asop kernel? It does seem like TW has better battery life...

Any custom rom with NFC support? And cm 12 question.

The question on the title, and also, what cyanogenmod 12.1 or 12 based rom is recommended for this phone? Always talking about stability in battery and phone services. Im exclusively intersted in lollipop or marshmallow roms (but i suppose that marshmallow roms still lack stability on this equipment)
Thanks!

Well first this is a Note forum, not a Galaxy 4 forum. Second, from my limited understanding of Samsung products (I'm on my 1st) if you want the best stability for the phone, your best bet is to stick with TouchWiz ROMs. Personally I flashed Jedi Elite V2 but it's a kitkat ROM. Using ASOP ROMS on a TouchWiz device, you will encounter a number of issues. And say goodbye to total SPen functionality. There are some 3rd party apps, but you won't ever get everything back if you leave TouchWiz. Sure, you can run ASOP ROMS from any android. But it there WILL be issues.
Also, currently the only way you get any cyanogenmod to work, you will have to accept the less stable nightly release, as there is no stable release for this model. So.... ASOP ROMS on TouchWiz devices = incompatibility issues. Nightly builds vs stable release = even more issues. I don't advise it.
If you are asking about flashing a T-Mobile Note 3, and want Lollipop, I suggest looking into a Note 5 port. It's TouchWiz and is packed with features. Personally I find I get better battery life off of kitkat than lollipop but I don't know about NFC

I was just double checking since you were posting from a Galaxy. Regardless, the issue remains the same. Unless there have been recent changes that I'm not aware of, you won't get much stability from an ASOP ROM. Like I said though, I suggest checking out a Note 5 port. I know they are out there. It will have most Note 5 features, as well as full functionality out of the S Pen. That is the one I would use if I chose to go back to Lollipop. when I bought this note 3, it was 5.0 stock ROM. I had HORRIBLE battery life. I am getting 3 times the battery life and a pretty cool kitkat ROM using Jedi Elite V2.
