Problems with Equalizer - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
most of the time, I'm using my phone for listening to music, and since I own Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-I9195), I'm thinking about throwing my 320€ worth smartphone in trash. Mostly I'm listening to rock music where basses are very important. When I was using stock firmware, everytime I increased the bass level, the music volume diminished. It came so far, that when I was traveling from work to home by bus, I could hear what people around me were talking to, even though my volume level was on 100%. Then I somehow increased the volume of my phone (I found a thread how to do that here on xda), but then the next problem became annoying. Almost every time I skipped the song, the equalizer settings went back to default. So every time i had to press menu button --> settings --> equalizer, and then basses went back to normal. Sometimes equalizer doesn't work at all, until I reboot my phone.
So I tried with Cyanogenmod today, and I'm even more disappointed with music quality. Every time I try to turn on bass boost, the music starts to crackle, even though bass level is only on slight. I'm using 120€ worth Sony headphones, which work great on any other device, so the problem definitely isn't in headphones.
Does anyone deal with the same problem? I just don't know what to do anymore ...
Thanks in advance & sorry for bad English.

Hello there.
First off, if you are going to throw S4 mini into trash, you can instead send it to me and I'll pay for the delivery, as I simply love the phone.
Secondly, I think the problem is you and not the phone. I have S4 mini and I love listening to music. As anyone who loves music (proffesionaly or unproffesionaly) knows, basses ARE NOT THE ONLY (and most) important thing, even in rock music. And as far as basses goes S4 mini does a very good job, as it does in other spectrums of music playback. The volume decreases a bit if you set it to bass, because the equalizer decreases the treble value, thus you get the perception of decreased laudnes. Although I would recommend you get your hearing checked, as the laudness of S4 mini seems to be laud enough for others.
If you really like to listen to high quality music and are a true audiophile, than you wouln't be listening to the music on S4 mini on the first place, but would go for a high quality professional grade mp3 (or FLAC) player with an external amplifier.
Therefore I conclude that you are just a bass freak who wants to complain, but please feel free to prove me wrong.

My opinion and advice may not matter since I don't own a s4 mini (would love to have it)
But did you tried sound alive from Samsung?
Just increase the bass and some clarity then reverb and room size (if you like) then the bass is on a good level, wanting more bass than that would only get in the way of the guitars part!!
Or try viper4android if you're on a desperate situation...
Can I ask something here?? Is the smart volume feature any good??

@Shiningb
Firstly, thanks for your answer. I realized that everything works perfectly with stock Samsung Music app (which doesn't use build-in equalizer, but uses it's own one). The quality of sound is really great.
Only problem is that I prefer Google Play Music which is much clearer, easyer to navigate and overall has nicer interface. But there I deal with equalizer problem; the sound is great at the moment, the equalizer is set the way I want, basses are great, but then suddenly (without particual reason) equalizer just goes flat and the volume increases for about 30% rapidly which is a great way to go deaf. Then I have to restart equalizer app, and it starts working normally again for about next 10 minutes. Until I won't find the solution, I have to use stock music app, ok, i can get along with this
I googled about the issue and I found that it is quite common with S4 users. I heard about ViPER4Android today, and I'm going to try it right now, thaniks for your advice !
And sorry, I don't know if smart volume feature works good, I use mp3gain app on my PC which equalizes volumes of all tracks on the same level and works perfectly.

This happens with equalizer because the system kills it from the ram
So a great solution is to use viper...
But you need root and put the apk of viper into system/app set permissions to rw-r-r
Like this it won't be killed, because it will make part of the system app
By the way what kind of music do you hear??
I'm a sound freak with viper, I tunr things like crazy until I reach the perfect sound (for a time!)
I really wanted to know how the smart volume works since the I9070 won't have a official 4.2.2 update :'(

Thanks for fast answer.
I installed ViPER4Android, but everything I try to change, doesn't have any effect on sound. I don't know what is wrong ...
Could you help me with Viper? I know how to put a file in system/app and set permissions.
My phone is rooted I'm using CWM and stock android from Samsung.
My favorite artists are 30 Seconds to Mars, Billy Idol, Bring me the Horizon, Foo Fighters, HIM, Kings of Leon, Oasis, RHCP, etc.
Sry, probably really won't. I owned I9000 before I9195 and it was the best phone i ever had, even better with Cyanogenmod

Playing music on the Wildfire S

Hello, long time WFS owner, first time poster on this site.
Ever since I've owned the Wildfire, I've been rather perplexed by the music it gives me. The sound quality itself seems decent, but the controls are... odd. Almost every time I press play the music starts, then after around 3 seconds there's a notable pause, before it starts up again. It's not a big deal, but it makes me wonder whether this is a normal thing on this handheld, or if it's a problem with the SD card I'm using. I managed to get a 32GB class 10 micro SD on sale, so I hope nothing's wrong with it. It doesn't seem to miss-handle any other files I put on it (except for some pictures that turn all black sometimes...)
I tried to use some alternatives like Player Pro or Power Amp, but these actually made the problem far worse or introduced all sorts of new bugs. On P.P. instead of a gap of silence at 3 seconds I get this high-pitched screech. Once the music starts playing it's OK, it doesn't do it at the beginning of every song, just occasionally (and certainly more often than I would like) when I hit the play button and start the music. Another thing both P.P. and P.A. suffer from is buggy lock screens and buggy screen rotations. I remember both crashing a lot while music was playing when all I would do is turn the phone on it's side.
Has anyone else noticed problems like this?

I have no problem with any music player,it must be something wrong with your card.I still use the 2 GB stock card. For the best sound quality use PowerAMP,much better than stock player. And also better headset would be recomended.
i use poweramp and have no problems.
also, if you change the settings to "no fading" under the audio engine settings, change buffer size to "huge(+750ms)", and keep audio priority at "+2", you can get gapless playback on standard mp3 files most of the time....occassionally you'll still get that slight blip between tracks, but it's way better than anything else i've tried without having to re-rip everything to a totally different format. (p.s. don't set it to "crossfade" or "cut silence", as i've found this makes it worse for some reason).
i used to hear what i think you're describing as a "screech" sound, i think it sounds more like you can hear the processor working between loading songs or something, but to be honest, i only ever heard it between really quiet song endings/beginnings and only on the stock headset, while listening in my totally silent room, at night...
currently using a cheap-as-chips smartphone headset adapter/mic connected to my KOSS pathfinder "plug" style headphones, using the EQ settings of PowerAmp, and it sounds amazing. The headphones bock out all outside noise, and give plenty of bass and still great mids and highs. to be honest, this is the best setup i've heard on a phone, if you need somethign better, you'd have to get a standalone mp3 player (and this sounds better than most of those, without going for somethign that's speficically designed for high quality audio, as opposed to some cheap and cheerful generic mp3).
No, it's not usual, you should uninstall your player and maybe download another one, if all your mp3 files have this problem then it mustn't be the music files.
And Set your phone back to factory spec is the last choice

It's not really a gap problem, and I personally like gaps between my songs. I often listen to songs on shuffle and it can be a little distracting when it seamlessly switches from soft classical to System of a Down rocking hard, lol. But yeah, it's really: The song starts, enough of it playing that I can recognize which song it is, awkward 2-3 second pause of absolute silence, then it picks up again. Not every time I start enough, but it does it enough for me to consider it a recurring problem.
All I can do is go buy a new micro-SD card I guess... I lent the stock 2 GB one that came with the device to a friend, so I can't exactly use that. I swear, all these bugs, combined with the fact that this thing seems impossible to Root (I have a GSM model) makes me sorely tempted to crawl back to iOS for my next model. I just with the iPhones didn't have such puny screens...
My old wfs use to do the same thing, play music for 10 secounds or so and then stop, idk why it did that but that phone was a problem, everytime I hung up from a call the screen would turn off for 3 mins everytime and the touch screen never works, so some phones do it and dont...but I got a new one and I love it Works great

Music/audio playback quality - stock phone

There have been a few threads about static, clicks, pops, etc... but nothing that really helped me figure out if i'm having a problem or not.
I have a stock GS3, purchased relatively early - 7/2 - from best buy.
I'm not happy with the audio playback quality, specifically when compared to other devices, like my iPod or old iPhone 4 that i had before this.
Either using the stock Samsung app, or using PowerAmp, which I've purchased... with all file formats... mostly FLAC, but also m4a, mp3...
Using any of the headphones i've tried... beyer dt1350, ety hf2, apple in-ear, etc... (not junk)...
The sound quality of music playback just doesn't seem "clear" to me... not any really blatantly loud static or distortion, although sometimes it is worse than others... occasional clicks, pops, etc. But mostly, just a lack of clarity... which could possibly be a constant mild static or distortion on the output.
Is anyone else experiencing it this way? Am i just being to sensitive to a different sound signature of this device vs apple's devices? I don't think so.
I'm 100% comfortable with the quality and integrity of my music files... i have a ton of them, and they play back fine on all of my other devices.
What else could it be, before i have to send it back to samsung and be w/o a phone for a week? best buy already won't exchange it for me, as i'm beyond my 30 day window.
help!
I know exactly what you mean, I'm very particular about my sound signature as well. I find using an equalizer to work wonders. But i have noticed that some equalizers dont work at all will the stock rom when listening to on device music with Google Play Music.
Have you tried using an equalizer or even installing Awesome Beats?
This is a development forum for custom OS and software... If you're completely stock, maybe you should take that up with Samsung or try some of the nice modded software...

XSInfinitySound works.

So tried flashing XSInfinitySound and it works. The Aroma installer version does not work but the zip for NXT devices does. Makes quite a difference. Not my work so here is the link to the original post. XSInfinitySound
Not getting any of the bugs reported?
Sent from my LT28h using xda app-developers app
I have not experienced any bugs what so ever. Also looks like he will have a new update this week. I just wiped cache and dalvik then flashed and rebooted. Does make a difference and removes the flatness of the sound. Walkman still works fine, stock eq works fine, Pandora, and G music.
The stock EQ will not work with Pandora but just flashing this makes Pandora just about perfect. It does work for G music and if you hit menu while in the app it has a listing for it. For a little extra controle I use Music Volume EQ from the market. Mostly use it for when I am in the car and to help balance things out to my liking.
Edit: I normally use Audio FX but I can not get it to work on this device. Would be awesome if someone on GB could try Audio FX and see if it works or not. I use the app on my Play with the XS mod I posted and its great. Just put it on a HTC Incredible also with no issues and its running ICS. Going to try and contact the app creator and see if they can fix it.
I been using Pandora only for a while now lol. Mainly because I use it through bluetooth in my car and the smart thing on the phone turns it on when car turns on. I'm not sure if maybe bluetooth doesn't sound as good but I mean to me still sounds as amazing as ever. It is a bit stronger I would say. I haven't tested with other things yet though. My car is also aging now lol. an 03 eclipse but it came with the premium infinity speakers. Sounds amazing on pandora with high quality checked. I'll find someone with decent headphones and try this out.
quick question. when in my car should I have it on headset or speaker mode in the dolby app? I ask because it connects via blueooth like a headset but I'm listening through speakers. I tried both and didn't notice much difference.
I just leave it on headset. Like you said there is not much of a difference between the two. This mod does seem to add that extra oomph to the music. The only thing I have noticed so far is the bass is a bit over driven when Pandora is playing. Think its more the recording quality though as its not noticeable with G music and the Walkman.
araoma does work just have to go into options
Nice. I was reading last night and saw that you had to go to options to get it working. May have to try it out but after reading on the original post it seems I will have to go back to an older nand.

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 sound/headphones issue

Loving my Galaxy Note 2, but I do have a few minor niggles regarding the stock Music Player that I'm hoping someone may be able to help with. I'm on stock firmware btw.
#1 Headphone play button often does not respond if left in pause mode for over a few minutes.
Allow me to explain - I'm at my desk at work listening to music with the stock music program. I get a phone call on my work phone so I click the headset button to pause the music. I finish my call and press the headset button to resume music. No response. Sometimes if I click once, twice or three times more it will start playing again. It's like the phone enters a sleep mode that won't respond straight away.
#2 Music EQ gets lost when something else happens on the phone.
For example, if I unplug my headphones to go for a walk to another part of the office. I return moments later, plug my headphones back in but the EQ is all messed up. Almost sounds like you’re in a tunnel. If I click the EQ button it immediately reverts to the correct EQ setting. This can also be simulated on demand by having music playing, swipe your hand over the screen to take a screenshot (music fades out, there is a camera click sound), then when the music fades back in it has gone into that tunnel EQ sound. Again, clicking the EQ button sorts the issue out.
I have considered moving to a different music program instead. I've tried Google Music (which has it's own bugs like album art disappearing), Winamp etc but for some reason the stock player's EQ settings (custom extended with Bass on 2, and Clarity on 1) make my Sony headphones respond far better than the EQ's in the other programs. And you can put a spot of reverb on the music as well which sounds ace.
No one else has these problems? Does no one use the Note 2 for music listening?

I have had some issues with my Note 2 also. Coming from Htc One XL with beats audio which some people don't like, however I did. Whenever I plug my headphones in the sound quality is just not as good but compared to HTC output sound is so much better.
Ive tried Original settings with phone plus added beats mods, but neither are producing same I quality I had with HTC phone, which is a pain as I do listen to music regularly on my phone. Not sure if makes big difference but thought I'd better mention I'm using in ear phones not headphones.
similar issue here.. sometimes the headset next/pause button works.. sometimes it doenst.. looks like once the phone sleeps it doesnt want to respond .. but response if i wake up ,, which is just stupid.

DAC Fix - Use the HI-FI DAC Everywhere!

Hi everyone! I've just developed an app that should fix the issue of the DAC only being usable in some apps.
Now the ESS DAC/AMP can be used in any app on your phone, including Google Play Music, YouTube, Spotify, and probably many more that I haven't tested yet.
Here's the Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phascinate.lgv10.dacfix
It can be set to automatically turn on when the phone boots up. My goal was to make this a "set it and forget it" kind of fix. All you have to do is enable it once, and it should be fixed for good. Of course, I've only just released it so it may have some bugs. But so far it's working fine on my end.
If you have any issues or it's not working correctly, feel free to tell me here! Hope it works for you guys! I'm really loving the sound quality on this phone.
doing back up now so I can try this, very exciting news if this works
Seems like it's working in Neutron amp which has been my pain point ever since buying the phone.
Thanks!
*tested with youtube and DI.fm both seem working with the DAC with the fix
wow big deal, thanks
Tested with YouTube and XiiaLive Pro and the volume definitely changes when toggling the hifi option on and off.
It is working on Poweramp. Thanks.

Interesting... Can the developer tell us a little more about how this works? I really didn't think it would be as simple as an app like this making it work.

The concept is actually quite simple! Immediately when music starts playing, it plays some completely (and I mean completely! We don't want any background noise, do we?) silent media which tricks the phone into turning the DAC on.

In theory, it should be. Because it's set to be silent, Android should simply completely skip over the silent media. In my own testing it doesn't seem to have had any negative effect whatsoever on sound quality. Though I'd love to see the frequency output in something like Audacity if anyone wants to test it.

Alrighty. Right now I'm on my lunch break at work listening with a Brainwavz HM5. Things seem good here, but I'll test tonight with my AKG Q701.
I really only use the stock music app and TIDAL which both worked without your fix, but I'll test everything out more tonight. My only concern would be a possible negative effect with apps that already worked fine, for example a silent track playing along with the regular music making things possibly no longer bit perfect, or extra battery drain for some odd reason. I'll test sound quality with my Q701 tonight and see if I notice any extra battery drain. All I can confirm at the moment is that toggling hifi on and off definitely changed the volume with apps that it didn't before.
Good work.

Yeah, that was my concern too. But everything seems to be working fine.
Feel free to post your results with the Q701's as soon as you test them!
Good job, works as intended. Thanks.
Few suggestions: Show status of app running in background from top pull down menu. Also the ability to enable disable from there. Otherwise still 5 out 5.
man you are a genious and this is the best ever app i appreciated this year
Does this app need root permission?
Edit: nvm. Just installed and gonna test..
Thanks for the effort mate. I'll also give it a try though as a non-audiophile person, I fail to notice Hi-Fi DAC effect anyway.
for those who can distinguish the difference between DAC enabled/disabled, can you tell that's even distinguishable with the QuadBeat headphones? I'm trying with some FLAC and various music players but other than then "higher volume" I cannot notice an improvement sound wise.
I do try with the QuadBeat and Bose QC25. I also just purchased a Piston 3. Do you think it's my headphones who are not enough to make a difference?
Can you maybe recommend a song where you can clearly distinguish the performance between DAC enabled or disabled?
Amazing app, thank you very much.
Now I challenge you to check the other audio limitation of the phone.
The normal and high gain mode of the Amp depending the impedance of the headphones at the moment is completely automatic.
That's OK with IEM but there are problems with big headphones with low impedance. In those cases the normal gain mode delivers not enough power (volume) and being able to select or force the high gain mode would be a perfect solution.
At this moment the high gain mode is triggered with headphones with an Impedance over 50ohm.
Thanks anyway for this app.

Seems to be no negative effects on SQ. Not sure on any change in battery life yet. Good so far.
Fantastic! At first I thought there would be a big battery impact since there is silent media playing, but then I remembered that only happens when there is actually music playing - fantastic implementation. Hopefully there is no battery drain. Works here for Google Play Music, so thank you very much!!!
it is working great with spotify here
I do notice the clarity with dac on and off.. however i'm using free spotify so the music stream is not high quality.
I only did notice a bug not sure because of this app or not but it never happen before.
So today i plug my phone to aux in my car in the morning everything work great.
in the afternoon i plug aux again to my car and this time my 4G or 3G writing on my signal bar is gone until i restart. This never happen before i install your apps, but seems i can't repeat this bug.
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to make this app. I just tested it with Player Pro and it seems to be working (Player Pro did work before but only if you didn't install the DSP pack). I did have one question. I noticed that the EQ is not working in Player Pro. You can open the EQ, but changing any of the frequencies or selecting a preset has no effect on the audio. Does that mean that the other audio features like Replay Gain also won't work with the app installed?
