It could just be my phone, but has anyone noticed their music sounding like it have really really small breaks in the sound, almost like the music is crackling? I've even found this when listening to my Sirius Satellite Radio app.
Though I may have found a fix, at least for the music. Originally my music was 320bit and i had just copied a few songs to my GN. When I started to listen to the music i would get crackling like sound or where the music would have almost a stuttering factor. Well i was getting annoyed enough with the crackling I almost went back to my MP3 player. Though I decided to try it one last time but i wanted my entire playlist. Now my playlist was about 200 songs and across many directories so I wasn't going to try search the whole thing for individual songs. Using winamp I copied them all into one directory, unfortunately when Winamp does this it converts them all back down to wav files so I had to reconvert them.
My software for converting back to MP3 is older and only able to convert up to 256bit. I was thinking it was going to be just as annoying, but low and behold my music plays without a glitch, or crackle or break or what ever.
It's almost like the phone can't handle the higher quality of music. Now again this could just be me so I thought I would ask. Unfortunately my Sirius Satellite Radio app still crackles.
Anyone else find this?
also if u have used an app like volume+ to increase your speaker volume, or modify your volume that could be the issue
Good thought, though i never actually got around to installing the app so we can eliminate that as a cause.
Oh no, lossy to lossy transcoding! Those poor files.
I haven't had any issues playing 320kbps MP3 CBR or MP3 V0. If anything they sound better than on my old iPhone 3GS, especially with DSPManager.
Do they play without any distortion on your PC? Are you using the same headphones?
Perhaps playing around with the equaliser settings in DSPManager would improve the output.
Have had the same problem but only with one album so far, it is 320bit but I also have other albums at 320bits that play ok. Strangely the problem doesn't occur if the screen is on!
Give me to this weekend and let me hoot the phone up to my input on my PC maybe i can let you all hear what I hear.

I would agree too if I had actually installed volume+
I don't think it's to do with the bit rate as such but the encoder, or at least the encoding settings, that you used. Almost all my mp3 are in 320 kbps, CBR and VBR, and they all play fine.

the phone seems to clip a lot when the volume is at the top two levels. sounds bad. setting it to 3rd highest level or less makes it sound normal and smooth
Not sure if they fixed this with 4.0.3 yet, but it's a known issue that any SAMPLE RATE (not bit rate) other than 44.1KHz can cause stuttering when the phone is in screen-off low power mode. Some EQs that cause the cpu to work have been known to fix it. Also changing the buffer size in PowerAmp has also I think. There are a few threads about it. I have recreated it with another persons 48KHz sample rate mp3. All mine are 44.1KHz and I've never had a problem with any of them, they all sound fantastic.

I've just recently purchased a new Samsung HS3000 bluetooth headset. Amongst others I've been wondering about the difference in sound quality when streaming music to the headset with the apt-X codec that is integrated into the HS3000 and the Galaxy S III and without.
What I don't know however is, whether the apt-X codec is incorporated into the ROM of the phone or directly into the Bluetooth-hardware.
The question everything boils down to is: Does Music over bluetooth sound better on Touchwiz-ROMs than on AOSP based ROMs?
In order to find that out I sampled 2 different music tracks and a silent mp3 on a Touchwiz and a AOSP ROM.
The ROMs used for testing were Omega v13.1 ICS (installation without bloadware) and my personal favorite so far SuperNexus Build 4
In my opinion? There is no humanly hearable difference (to me at least ), so either apt-X is present in neither of the Roms, both of them (possibly hardware-side) or it just doesn't even matter (my bet). QED :highfive:
If anyone makes any different experiences though, please post it so I can try again, maybe :silly:

I lack the technical know how to understand your results, though Im thankful that you did them because that question has been in my mind for awhile...to spend a bit more on the aptx enabled or not headphones. Based on your opinion that there is negligible differences, I'll just take that as gospel since I'm just a guy with average ears!

Would be great if you could provided the A2DP logcat strings to see which codec is being used in both cases. You can use CatLog from GooglePlay.
Not sure if its the Samsung HS3000, or my microSD card SanDisk Mobile Ultra 32GB Micro SDHC, the sdcard is running fine, for most part. What I get is after playing my mp3's for a while, and skipping some songs etc... over the BT device is that I get quick random skipps and pauses, sometimes the phone will freeze, and I do not get any access to my microSD card.
The bad news is that even without BT and direct headphones I still get that sometimes. My next test is to go back to my regular class 4 8gb and put same exact music and listen for a day or two.
I tried stock and custom ROMs, different kernels etc. Stock seem to be the most stable, it also seems to be with some apps trigger this? or cause it to be worse? I researched online and someone suggested freezing the BT sharing app, and I did it had songs playing for an hour or more and problem still came up.
I am wondering if I need to have a specific min CPU speed when running BT? then the regular 384mhz
the microSD card has always worked in my PC, including doing full backup of my files of over 8-13gb, also I have formatted the long way this drive, nothing seems to improve this very annoying bug.
Sometimes i can get away by closing all apps and turning off BT and starting everything backup, but lately I had to do a reboot to fix it.
I keep doing windows scans on the sdcard and nothing ever shows up that it has any errors.
The internal phone memory I believe all the mp3s played fine that way, same exact ones, I just hide and unhide (. in front) the files and a reboot.
---------- Post added at 02:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:32 PM ----------
my troubleshooting is difficult because I had way too many variables, I got my BT and microSD card same time, also went from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 etc...
I saw some kernels had new BT and wifi drivers, but I used stock so I'm not sure why im having issues while others have not reported this.
My mp3s are high quality in variable bit, which I do not think is an issue, because it doesnt always happen on same exact mp3 files... worst is when I just listen to music the phone goes on longer without the glitch, as I start to use other apps, Chrome, Gmail, etc... it will be more frequent?
some had suggested the microSD card port on the phone could go flaky with the CPU's oc? I had the phone in the summer run pretty hot (in AZ)
Will report with my final test with my previous microSD card (8gb class 4) that worked flawlessly
=== update ===
So after a test, I saw the same thing happen after the 32gb card formatted, I then put 8gb card with same music. Everything seemed to work, then after some usage (chrome, email etc) same thing happened.
So its not the microSD card, it seems to be related to app (chrome or Google apps) I had suspected this as I had once flashed a room and had not installed any apps, and was able to listen to music for hours without issue.
Now if I could find out what could cause such an issue, if its simple app, or if its system/firmware related. ( was able to get the system work fine after unmounting and remounting the card)

On beta 4.1.2 JB ROM for SGS2 aptX codec is implemented. I also have HS3000 and on all previous sammy ROMs there was no aptX support.
Here is the prooflog https://dl.dropbox.com/u/100844994/sgs2log.txt
And what is more important - BT stereo sound quality on beta 4.1.2 JB ROM XXLSJ cannot even be compared with all previous ROMs. It's like day and night.
Why HS3000 does not transfer the ringtone?
Hi guys,
I have a question about the HS3000.
I use it now on the galaxy note II, before I used it on the galay note I.
In both cases I can call and listen to media with the HS3000. However the ringtone does not transfer to the HS3000 - I can hear only the respective beeps.
The biggest problem is that the respective talking id programs that I have do not talk in the headset, just via the phone speaker.
An interesting thing is that when a call is pending and I answer it if the name of the caller is in process of reading I can hear it in the HS3000.
What I think with my missing knowledge is that when in call the media stream does not go to the HS3000 for unknown reasons.
So my questions is how to make HS3000 usable in this regard?
Hello all,
I love the audio quality on CM, however ever since using it on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, the audio on Spotify has constantly popped and stuttered and sputtered and whatever other word you want to use when playing through the headphone jack.
I feel like I've tried everything outside of switching ROMs. Tiny Kernel, Franco Kernel, CPU Governors, etc etc etc, doesn't matter.
I've also done search after search after search, and I feel like I'm completely alone in having this issue. I can't find anyone asking about this anymore, now that Spotify claims to have fixed it in an app release months ago (which makes me think it isn't necessarily Spotify's fault, but who knows).
I should mention that this does not happen with Pandora or Songza, for instance. Only Spotify and TuneIn.
Of course, it doesn't seem to be a coincidence that both Pandora and Songza process the audio in some different way from Spotify and TuneIn, since normal use of CM's DSP Manager has no effect on those apps but does work on Spotify.
So, is there anyone else out there who has this issue with CM (or other ROMs)?? At this point I'm just hoping there are others out there who have had this problem just so it isn't an "only my phone" issue -- because those ones have no hope of being fixed.
I have the same problem, running stock 4.2.2 on my Galaxy Nexus. I think it's a device problem, not an app/background process problem.
I don't use TuneIn so I can't speak to the quality of its streams, but I have used Rdio, Slacker, Pandora and Google Play Music and they all play flawlessly.
ONLY Spotify plays audios with occasional snaps, crackles and pops, like a bowl of Rice Krispies. Some songs will play without a blip, some with a few, some with many. The songs are not interrupted...just marred by this defect. And it's never the same way twice with the same song.
It happens whether the song is streaming, or playing locally.
My guess is that the Nexus has difficulty playing Ogg Vorbis files, which is the format for Spotify streams and downloads. As far as I know, the other services I mentioned stream in AAC or MP3. While the Nexus supports Ogg Vorbis, it appears it does not support it very well. I'm going to test this theory by transcoding one of my Apple Lossless audio files to Ogg and then uploading it to the Nexus. My hunch is that it will demonstrate the same issues.
I guess we should consider ourselves lucky; before Jelly Bean the Nexus suffered from more dramatic playback problems. Do a Google search on "Music Stutters when playing long files and screen off: Galaxy Nexus" and read through it. There are a couple of posts that deal specifically with Ogg playback.
I've decided to live with it. I've been hopping from music service to music service trying to find the right one, and I always come back to Spotify. As long as the issue doesn't become more severe, I think I can re-program my brain to tolerate it.

My theory was incorrect. I used XLD to transcode Boston's "Hitch A Ride" from Apple Lossless to Ogg Vorbis (VBR, quality 4.0), then put the file on my phone. I used Winamp to play the file and it played beautifully.
So I'm thinking there's something specific with Spotify's encoding that the Nexus doesn't like.
What's odd is that I have run Spotify on other mobile devices and have never had an issue. That's why I have trouble putting the blame on them.
OP, after checking many Google leads, posts, etc. I believe--for Spotify anyway--I have found a way to stop (or at least greatly reduce) the Rice Krispies.
If you have Google Play Music on your phone, make sure it's fully updated and then launch it.
Within Play Music, go to Settings, then select Equalizer.
Turn the equalizer on, select the Normal preset, and move the Bass Boost and 3D Effect sliders all the way to the left to turn them off...unless you like them on.
Back out of Google Play Music to the home screen, then launch Spotify.
Go to Settings within Spotify, choose Audio Effects and verify the Equalizer is OFF in that app.
Using this combination of settings/conditions, I have heard just a couple of pops over a string of a half-dozen songs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts.
I'm guessing that having the Google Play Music equalizer on, some additional processing is taking place that alleviates whatever is causing the popping to occur.
Good luck!
So, posting here was a last resort, but I've exhausted all my other options. I'll try to make this as concise as possible:
I just did a bluetooth/aux input retrofit for my car so I can stop using CDs for music. Aux sounds crystal clear, bluetooth with my 2nd generation iPod touch sounds crystal clear, bluetooth with my Optimus G Pro has static, crackling at certain frequencies. Doesn't sound compressed necessarily, just crackly.
What I've done:
1) Hard reset.
2) Tried both the original 4.1.2 and the new "value pack" update.
3) Actually sent my phone back to AT&T and got a refurbished one in the mail.
4) Sent my bluetooth retrofit unit back and got a new one in the mail.
5) Rooted the phone, installed freegee and twrp, and flashed the hkfriends kernel.
None of this fixed my issues. When playing the same exact song on my iPod and Android phone, the iPod wins every time.
P.S. My friend's Verizon phone (I think it's a Motorola Razr) has the same sound quality issues. Not sure of Android version, though.
Music is the absolute most important thing for me, and if I can't get this resolved I will have to switch back to Windows Phone/iPhone, despite how much I love Android. I have no knowledge or time to develop a new Rom for the G Pro and there's no telling when we'll get one that could fix my issues.
Is anyone else having these problems, or does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
For some reason my phone decided to play music using "Phone Audio". I disabled phone audio for the device in bluetooth setting, then it connected as an AV signal, and quality improved drastically.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just tried it, unfortunately did not seem to make any noticeable difference for me. To clarify, the sound quality is fine for the most part, it's just at certain frequencies I hear crackling.
By the way, earlier I also edited the audio.conf file under /system/etc/bluetooth and changed the values of "SBCSources=1" and "MPEG12Sources=0" to 0 and 1 respectively, which I read should force better quality out of bluetooth. Additionally I changed the value "Master=false" to true, which I also read could improve quality. It might be my mind playing tricks on me but it does seem to sound better, however I still hear the crackling at times, so I'm definitely not where I want to be.
Highly disappointing. Any other suggestions?
Which music player are you using on your phone? And have you tried any of the equalizer apps from the market?
Sent from my LG-E980 using xda premium
I've tried both the Music app that LG includes, and Google's Play Music app, which I prefer. No difference. Have not tried any equalizers, but not quite sure what that would do aside from eliminating the frequencies that have issues through bluetooth but work fine through an aux input? I don't consider butchering the music as an acceptable solution, unfortunately.
try this, it might help

Just out of curiosity - how did you find out editing the audio.conf file? I'm looking for a way to boost the output volume for my bluetooth, did a quick search and saw your post and it made me curious...
Will this change boost the output volume at all or is there a separate line or file to be edited?
Thanks for your help.
Hi,
most of the time, I'm using my phone for listening to music, and since I own Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-I9195), I'm thinking about throwing my 320€ worth smartphone in trash. Mostly I'm listening to rock music where basses are very important. When I was using stock firmware, everytime I increased the bass level, the music volume diminished. It came so far, that when I was traveling from work to home by bus, I could hear what people around me were talking to, even though my volume level was on 100%. Then I somehow increased the volume of my phone (I found a thread how to do that here on xda), but then the next problem became annoying. Almost every time I skipped the song, the equalizer settings went back to default. So every time i had to press menu button --> settings --> equalizer, and then basses went back to normal. Sometimes equalizer doesn't work at all, until I reboot my phone.
So I tried with Cyanogenmod today, and I'm even more disappointed with music quality. Every time I try to turn on bass boost, the music starts to crackle, even though bass level is only on slight. I'm using 120€ worth Sony headphones, which work great on any other device, so the problem definitely isn't in headphones.
Does anyone deal with the same problem? I just don't know what to do anymore ...
Thanks in advance & sorry for bad English.

Hello there.
First off, if you are going to throw S4 mini into trash, you can instead send it to me and I'll pay for the delivery, as I simply love the phone.
Secondly, I think the problem is you and not the phone. I have S4 mini and I love listening to music. As anyone who loves music (proffesionaly or unproffesionaly) knows, basses ARE NOT THE ONLY (and most) important thing, even in rock music. And as far as basses goes S4 mini does a very good job, as it does in other spectrums of music playback. The volume decreases a bit if you set it to bass, because the equalizer decreases the treble value, thus you get the perception of decreased laudnes. Although I would recommend you get your hearing checked, as the laudness of S4 mini seems to be laud enough for others.
If you really like to listen to high quality music and are a true audiophile, than you wouln't be listening to the music on S4 mini on the first place, but would go for a high quality professional grade mp3 (or FLAC) player with an external amplifier.
Therefore I conclude that you are just a bass freak who wants to complain, but please feel free to prove me wrong.
My opinion and advice may not matter since I don't own a s4 mini (would love to have it)
But did you tried sound alive from Samsung?
Just increase the bass and some clarity then reverb and room size (if you like) then the bass is on a good level, wanting more bass than that would only get in the way of the guitars part!!
Or try viper4android if you're on a desperate situation...
Can I ask something here?? Is the smart volume feature any good??
@Shiningb
Firstly, thanks for your answer. I realized that everything works perfectly with stock Samsung Music app (which doesn't use build-in equalizer, but uses it's own one). The quality of sound is really great.
Only problem is that I prefer Google Play Music which is much clearer, easyer to navigate and overall has nicer interface. But there I deal with equalizer problem; the sound is great at the moment, the equalizer is set the way I want, basses are great, but then suddenly (without particual reason) equalizer just goes flat and the volume increases for about 30% rapidly which is a great way to go deaf. Then I have to restart equalizer app, and it starts working normally again for about next 10 minutes. Until I won't find the solution, I have to use stock music app, ok, i can get along with this
I googled about the issue and I found that it is quite common with S4 users. I heard about ViPER4Android today, and I'm going to try it right now, thaniks for your advice !
And sorry, I don't know if smart volume feature works good, I use mp3gain app on my PC which equalizes volumes of all tracks on the same level and works perfectly.

This happens with equalizer because the system kills it from the ram
So a great solution is to use viper...
But you need root and put the apk of viper into system/app set permissions to rw-r-r
Like this it won't be killed, because it will make part of the system app
By the way what kind of music do you hear??
I'm a sound freak with viper, I tunr things like crazy until I reach the perfect sound (for a time!)
I really wanted to know how the smart volume works since the I9070 won't have a official 4.2.2 update :'(
Thanks for fast answer.
I installed ViPER4Android, but everything I try to change, doesn't have any effect on sound. I don't know what is wrong ...
Could you help me with Viper? I know how to put a file in system/app and set permissions.
My phone is rooted I'm using CWM and stock android from Samsung.
My favorite artists are 30 Seconds to Mars, Billy Idol, Bring me the Horizon, Foo Fighters, HIM, Kings of Leon, Oasis, RHCP, etc.
Sry, probably really won't. I owned I9000 before I9195 and it was the best phone i ever had, even better with Cyanogenmod
