[Q] Can i install custom roms being S-On on my device? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have HTC desire hd..It is currently rooted and have unlocked bootloader..and i am S-ON on my deive. I have currently flashed a custom rom (jellytime).
My question is that , can i flash EACH and EVERY rom being S-ON on my device or do some custom roms require S-OFF only?

you must read description on any custom rom..but usually what i know all custom rom now can installing on s-on (just unlock) or s-off phone..
but for s-on (just unlocked) phone you must always do flashing boot.img (extracted from rom.zip it self) via fastboot too after every each time you finish installing new custom rom it self..

You need either a unlocked bootloader or S-Off to root a device.
If you are rooted properly then you can certainly flash Custom ROMs.
Before that go to ClockworkMod Recovery and take a complete Nandroid Backup of your current Stock ROM so that you can flash back Stock when you need.

You need a rooted device to flash Custom ROM. To get rooted you need to unlock the bootloader or make S-Off.
You said that you are rooted the device with S-off. That' enough you can flash any ROM.
Still if you are not sure you rooted or not just refer this guide:

i cannot unlock bootloader because kernal version 2.6.35.10 ruu is not available on htcdev
Press <power> + Vol Down type what is displayed on your HBOOT.
If your Hboot version is 1.08.xxxx or later version you may skip the RUU Process and try to unlock the bootloader.
Follow the guide, it will help you to root.
I have Hboot Version 1.03.0000

You need to Update the bootloader thru HTCdev.com
Follow the steps carefully and patiently and update the bootloader. For RUU you have to choose according to your country/region and carrier, which matches with. But be sure to chose the right one.
You need to have installed HTC Sync, Android SDK and Java Runtime on your PC, those links are available with Guide itself.
After updating the bootloader, you need to root the device. Then install ClockworkMod Recovery, which will help you to take the Nandroid Backup of your STOCK ROM.
Thereafter if you need, can install LINK2SD which will help you to install all your apps on your SD Card. So that phone's internal memory will be increased and you can see a considrable fast with the device.

as i told u my kenral verion ruu is not listed on htc dev i have already installed clockworkmod reccovery and lind2sd
i just want to install custom rom
all guides of installing custom roms says that u have to unlock bootloader to install custom rom
If you are S-OFF, then you can just install a ROM. There is no need to unlock the bootloader.
is there a way to unlock bootloader without htcdev
is there r chances to hard brick my phone while flashing custom rom?

Hi,
Since your bootloader says S-OFF, you can try any custom ROM.
Just refer the below link, If you like it just download the ROM and Flash it. See all the features listed there. It's not available with the STOCK ROM!....

[Q] Can I flash custom rom with rooted DHD?

Hi All
I'm not a complete noob but so much to learn
I've successfully rooted and s-off and custom rom a sensation and a couple of tablets.
However regarding my Desire HD 2.35 GB HBoot 2.00.0029
I have managed to Boot unlock, Root and CWM
So far though I can't s-off
Can I still flash a custom rom or do I have to have s-off ?
Which roms can i flash now?
If not is there an s-off tut for 2.35GB
Thanks
Stu
If you want S-Off you need to do it manually. The automated tool for it, AAHK, has been retired. There's a thread around here with manual instructions, but it's not for noobs. You can flash a custom ROM from recovery if you leave your phone the way it is (as far as I'm understanding, S-On, bootloader unlocked, rooted), but you need to fastboot flash the ROM zip's boot.img each time you flash a new ROM.

Why you are asking for S-OFF guide if you are already S-OFFed ??
S-OFF for One X is not available yet so there isn't any guide for it. And if you have an S-OFF device, you probably are among those lucky people who've got a factory S-OFF phone.

You must unlock your bootloader if you want to flash a custom ROM.
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069904

That means including of unlocking the bootloader
The Installation for s-on and s-off is the same?
I thought S-OFF don't need to flash the boot.img
So S-OFF devices only need an unlock, custom recovery.
They only need to flash the ROM but S-ON need to flash boot.img separate .
Isn't it right?
Thanks for your help

Its exactly the same as hofs said. Most Rom zips don't attempt to flash the boot.img in the installer script even though it would work with an s off phone.
Best off flashing the boot.img with fastboot if you don't know.
Restoring a nandroid will flash a boot though which is handy.
I put this together sometime ago which may be usefull to you.

Just lock up in HBOOT if your device is already unlocked...
If not then unlock your bootloader.

CM13 S-ON

Does cm13 works with s-on ?
Yes all custom roms work on s-on devices you just need to be on the latest available fitmware (lollipop or even MM)

I don't think all custom roms can work.
Some Roms requires a patched boot image,
This will be flashed automatically with CM13, Resurrection Remix or other Roms, and this part of flashing needs S-off.
Some developers have written at the header of threads, if S-off is need or not.
So you must looking for a ROM that can be flashed on a m8 with S-ON locked bootloader

Nope, not correct(looking from my experience).
I have One M8 for about 2 years, S-ON and UNlocked bootloader. I flashed every rom that came out, you don't have to do S-OFF for flashing 'patched' boot.img's.
S-off stands most for the heavy mods(messing with adsp etc etc), and converting device to oem/unlocked/developer edition etc.
:good:
Inreed so. All roms work. You can flash boot.img files with s-on and they are also always flashed with with rom. The boot partition isn't locked with s-on.

some info please

I'm wanting to go custom but do I really need s_off and supercid or can I just unlock boot loader and be happy lol. I'm using a UK m8
No need S-Off
What you need :
The device now on Marshmallow firmware 6.xx.xxx.x
Unlocked Bootloader
Latest TWRP
Custom ROM

I think you are confusing custom ROMs with stock (HTC) ROMs (RUU).
Custom ROMs (as mentioned): s-on if fine, just need unlocked bootloader, and custom recovery TWRP
Stock/official ROM (RUU): If you are changing carrier/region versions, you need s-off and change the CID (or SuperCID). But this is not recommended nor necessary for most folks (only suggested for experienced users, with the proper circumstances).
