[Q] DHD booting, but no display activity. How to repair?

Hi all. In need of a bit of advice here. Hope this is in the right forum.
My beloved DHD has suffered from one too many falls. Despite being protected in an Otterbox Commuter case, he now lies on his deathbed. Even though I was considering an upgrade, I'm thinking I might want to stretch out his life for as long as possible instead. So I've come here to ask for repair advice.
- The phone seems structurally sound from the outside, no damage besides minor aesthetic scratches from before the phone was protected by the Otterbox.
- It appears to boot. Makes the vibration noise etc. Heck the alarm even went off the other morning, at the set time of 0630.
- Screen does not function at all. Lifeless. But not broken in any way externally. Because of this, had to pull the battery to shut the alarm off.
- When plugged in to charge, charging light indicator does not illuminate.
Any ideas?

Sounds like 2 things. Broken lcd and a broken charging port. It wouldn't be worth repairing. You could buy one second hand on ebay for aboot £120.

Thanks for that. Considering trying to sell it broken, for parts. Only thing that concerns me is any sensitive data that may be readily accessed by someone who knows how to get to it.
Is there a way to wipe it?

You could use another dhd with the same firmware and copy the key/button presses and reset it in bootloader mode.

Could also be that the connector for the screen has been dislodged due to being drop to many times you mite try opening it up and see if it is that.

I have a problem similar to yours. But in my case, I'd turned the phone off to go to the cinema and the LCD and touch never turned on again.
In order to erase your data, did you try overwriting a stock rom? (In case it's just the charging LED that is broken)

That sucks! Self detonating phone. Does yours still vibrate and 'turn on'?
Haven't actually managed to clear the data. I'm ordering this part here (http://www.parts4repair.com/htc-desire-hd-lcd-screen-fpc-connector/) and I'm going to attempt to pull it apart and fix it.
If I can get it to work again I'll sell the One V I'm using and go back to the old faithful!

Anyway i am having the exact same problem as you have.
My dad brought home a Desire HD from work wich was not working so i am trying to fix it.
The phone boots, it vibrates ones and after a minute it makes the boot sound.
But nothing responses and the lights wont turn on.
Also no charging light..
Also it does not charge but usb does connect.
Could this be the FPC connector or the screen?

Well, I've ordered the FPC connector replacement part I linked above...going to attempt to play around with it when it arrives and see if I can breathe new life into the phone. So I can tell you how that goes...
Although:
1. Would the charging light and screen problem be connected? Is this feasible? Or does it suggest something else is likely shot?
2. I believe the FPC connector requires a solder to replace. This could be a bit ambitious on my part to attempt to repair...any ideas on what sort of a solder would be suitable?

no clean flux core solder would work best, preferably something very thin (about .015"). A small bottle of noclean flux would also help and you probably will need lead free solder as that is likely what they used on the board to begin with, and lead and leadfree dont typically mix as well.

yes, those should both work fine. ya it is costly for equipment. i have a edsyn iron i use at home and solder i get from work. i would say it can be tricky, i havent seen the connector but im sure its similar to other inline ribbon connectors. remember, short burst soldering, heating it for too long will take the pad off the pcb, and repairing THAT can become very difficult.

How does the spen know it's in the silo?

I have discovered my tablet suffers what seems to be a common problem with other Note models.
I have been a little disappointed with battery life and today noticed the tablet vibrating as I was walking, it was detecting the spen removal every thirty seconds or so, even with the tablet in my hand and relatively still. This turns the screen on.
It is most likely going back tomorrow, sadly for a refund as they have no stock, I've had charging issues too. On two occasions it only reached around 53% powered off charging overnight and only hit 90% one evening when powered on, that said, this has only happened a couple times early on. Maybe just the battery finding it's footing and calibrating itself?
It got me thinking though, I'm using a snugg case with a magnet on the closure. Does anyone know if the spen uses a magnet in the silo?
I do occasionally find that with the cover folded round the back that it can cause the screen to go off, so the magnet must be of a reasonable strength. Maybe it's interfering with the silo detecting the pen?
Any thoughts please?

Im pretty sure its not a magnetic sensor, maybe its a pressure sensor of some sort? (i really have no clue lol)
But I had the same problem with mine, and found that if i physically pressed down on the top of the pen when it was inside the silo,
it would temporarily resolve the problem.
if your s-pen isnt snug and can slide in/out, the tablet might not detect the pen as being inside the silo.
Got my exchanged and the s-pen is MUCH more snug, no problems whatsoever.
Im using the Poetic Slimline case (has magnets) and have been using it for over 2 months now, no problems whatsoever.

Did you go into settings and turn off pen detection? Just a suggestion. I have not had this issues nor have I heard of it before.

That setting seems to do nothing, even after reboot. Still detects the pen in and out. Is that normal? Doesn't sound like it.

Short explanation:
"An electromagnetic field is generated from a circuit behind the screen. The S Pen picks this up and uses it to power itself and figure out its position relative to the screen. It sends this, along with information from the S Pen button and the nib at the end, back to the Note."

I'm sure S-pen detection is the feature where it lets you know if you walk away with your tablet without the s-pen.
My S-pen and Silo are both fine and it still vibrates and I have detection off too.

From what I've read, the tablet doesn't have that walk away feature and it's limited to the note phones.

S-Pen detection disables the digitiser if the S-Pen is IN the holster. It save a bit of power.
I have the HM5100 Bluetooth Pen. It works like this.
With "Disable pen detection" unchecked I can use the BT spen while the note' spen is still in the holster.
With "Disable pen detection" checked the BT spen does not work util I remove the note' spen from the holder.

PEOPLE ! Daf** happend with my tablet ?
Today in the morning i put my tablet charging and a few minutes ago, where i pick up this happend.
The tablet in on fire when i pick her up, i mean, i can´t hold it in my hands because of the heat.
what can i do now ? :crying::crying::crying::crying:

If it is not your fault, someone else is responsible. Such a damage does not occur without external force.

she was on while charging, after i take off the charger the tablet still work 100% ( i guess), but i turned off because was too hot.
The heat was coming from the place where you put the charger. ( i guess was a factory error in the charger and was heat too much, i don´t know)
I´m afraid in the moment i get the tablet to samsung they say that was me that dropped to the ground and broke the screen.

Either the battery expanded and broke the panel or something related to the battery. Im not sure if samsung will replace that.. How old is this tablet?

I would make sure to add a note (hand written message) when returning it to Samsung that you have included the charger and the cable for them to test and I would tape a note to the back of the tablet so they can't say they didn't see it and take pictures of the note taped to the tablet.
If you were charging it with the factory charger and the cable as per the instructions I would fight them to the end for a replacement!

That hole is obviously made by external forces. If it was caused by heat or battery expansion it wouldn't look like that. Either you smashed something onto it or someone else did.

You are wrong, the tablet was on my office when i put it on charge, then leave, nobody gets in the office ( i'm sure) and when i come back the tablet is like this...

If you are adamant that no one else could have man handled your tablet while you were out, the other possible explanation is that your tablet experienced some extreme temperature and had a pre existing weak point at that position (micro fractures can be invisible to the eye).
It is unlikely that your battery could have become hot enough to crack your screen without bursting into flames first, so the other extreme is more likely. Is there a chance that the ambient temperature of your office dropped to freezing or near freezing while you were away?

No one enter my office because i locked after leaving. And the temperature was always the same, ambient temperature. 10 to 15° celsius.

Most probable scenario is that someone physically damaged the unit since you did leave it unattended. Achems Razor will help cut to the truth.

I'm interested in buying this tablet which is how I've ended up here (new to the community).
Having some experience with lithium-polymer batteries from hobbies of mine, my first thought was 'what type of battery does it have?' Li-Po batteries have a tendency to expand and potentially catch alight if 'gone dodgy' or over-charged. The Galaxy Tab S uses a Lithium-Ion battery which it turns out can have similar behaviour.
This could well explain the state of the tablet (and the heat). It might not have caught alight with a standard charger, or you got to it before it did. Either way, good thing you got to it when you did!
I can't post any external links yet as I'm still too new, but googling "Lithium Ion battery expansion" and "explosion" shows some examples of what can happen to these batteries (although I don't believe this to be very common).
This type of expansion force from inside the unit would most likely burst the screen and I can only imagine that being pretty nasty, and possibly the cause of the state that your tablet was in.
I trust that you got it replaced through your warranty without any quibble?!..

Screen Rotation Not Working

I was having this problem before a little and I would just do a simple reboot. However, this morning my clumsy niece dropped my tablet on the floor Now the rotation is not working at all.
I've seen videos which lead me to believe that the issue is due to a loose ME571k cable. I have tried fastening it. I inadvertently took it out and reconnected it. I've tried to fasten it the best I can. The touch screen works. However, orientation is dead.
There was a program mentioned called "Test My Android" and none of the sensor calibrators show any sign of life.
This is driving me crazy. I don't know what to do. Maybe it is loose and I just have to keep on messing with it but it's stressful.
Any advice?

Yes it is - for sure. The 'rotation' sensor is a tiny chip which is unlikely to be damaged by a drop.
re-seat the cable on both ends
spray the contacts of the cable with Electronic Cleaner if possible
apply a layer of thick tape over the cable's motherboard connector, so the back cover will deliver extra pressure on it

It seems no matter how many times or how snugly I set the cable in that the screen rotation still does not work.
I'm using an app for rotation now. It works but it drives me crazy.

Solidsuit interrupting battery temperature??

Hi i'm new here. Actually this is my first time posting.
I've just received my Note 10+ 2 days ago, N975U. This couple of days were a bit roller coaster for me. I keep getting this 'charging paused battery temperature too low' thing. Really thought of sending it back since i jot got it.
But as weird as it may sounds (pls bear with me), i only get that charging pauased thing when i am using my rhinoshield solidsuit (carbon edition). When i took it off, it charges just fine, full in under 1 hour from about 30%. When i put it back while charging, the charging process stopped again after about 1 or 2 mins. Then i take it off, plug it back in, n voila everything works just fine.
What the heck is going on? Can anyone pls pls explain to me?

Both. Once that msg pops out, i cant charge both ways. But once it vanish then both charging method works.
Any ideas?

Weird case. I have the carbon edition solidsuit too and thats not happening to me.
I only noticed that the phone gets too hot on Samsung 15w wireless charger, but i havent tried without the case.
Tomorrow i'm gonna try charging without the case to see if there is any change.
Hope you find usefull this info.

I hav found the cause on samsung US community. It was the battery's temperature sensor attached to the wireless charging coil. When wearing a tight case, such as rhinoshield solidsuit or otterbox defender pro, the case bends the phone a little bit. Not too much but just enough to make the sensor detached from the battery, hence the temperature too low message.
The solution? Either charge without the case, or press the upper half of the phone to align the sensor back into place. I am planning to get my phone to Samsung Service and ask for wireless coil replacement, but i am not sure if that wud help.
Any thoughts?

That's one of the weirdest things I have heard. But it seems to be true as a number of others have reported it too. I use an otterbox too but never faced that problem. Seems to be a problem with only some units. In that case you can definitely ask for the service to replace the coil. I am on an N975F though, the Exynos version.

Maybe you have a faulty unit, because I have the exact same case, and I've had my Note since November, and no problems at all.
(I do have noticed that the case fits tighter than others tho, but no problems)
