[Q] Help! - DZ Repair Mission, Advice Needed.

My First Post! How's it going everybody! (Newb Alert)
I just purchased a Bell HTC Desire Z from a classified ad off of an older man who found that the phone wasn't fully functioning. The poor guy probably paid around $400CDN for the phone, but I ended up eventually buying it from him for $250.
Here is what is wrong with the phone:
1. Power Button-does not work, neither on or off...basically fully unfunctional and only way to turn phone off is battery pull...fun stuff! (planning on using the Teardown/Repair guide by verkion - recommended?)
2. The In-Call speaker (where you put your ear while talking on the phone) seems to have very limited sound, perhaps something has been destroyed on the inside, how all other sound mechanisms work, such as the external speaker and internal speaker w/ headphones. (planning on using the Teardown/Repair guide by verkion - recommended?)
3. The Digitizer, well parts of it (along the left edge of the phone when upright) are unresponsive, so called blind spots which when touched are unresponsive on the digital keyboard along with the home button (house shaped icon) - especially frustrating when browsing web pages because I have to click back like 10 times to get home... (planning on using the Teardown/Repair guide by verkion - recommended?)
4. It is a Bell branded phone, Locations does not work! however I have done the research on the forums and I think I can figure out the whole Rooting thing out, but advice is appreciated! (planning on using gtrab's FAQ for Dummies for the rooting, s-off, and de-branding)
Now...I am not really technologically inclined to the level most of you probably are, but I am good with my hands and really interested/curious about this whole mission I need to complete, so I can fix this phone myself instead of paying $100 for cell phone repair...plus its a nice challenge right?
Do you guys recommend that I take care, or at least attempt to fix the power button issue before I root the phone to a previous, unbranded firmware which will allow me to use Locations? This only makes sense right, because I am going to need the power button for that process?
I know this is a lot to ask, but I just need some pushes and shoves to get me on the right track to try and get this to work, so if it is technologically impossible or excessive...please let me know how I can fix 4 of these problems methodically in a safe and professional way!

EDIT: My prediction is that the individual who originally owned this phone dropped it and as a result the digitizer, power button, and speaker were all affected...but of course I am no expert.

To me it sounds like the flex cable has been damaged. It would definitely cause all these things at once.
I'm pretty sure you need to fix the power button before rooting because you need the power button to actually root it.

Never thought of that but it sure seems like a better diagnosis. The flex cable originates in the bottom half of the phone in the same compartment that the z hinge is found right?
It is also the flexible strip that runs through the middle of the phone when the hinge is half-way positioned, connecting the lcd/digitizer to the main motherboard of the phone?
I geuss replacing the flex cable would still involve the Teardown/Repair, however I dont think I will need to replace a power button, speaker, or digitizer IF!...that is the case.
Any other ideas on this?

Yes thats the flex cable, it is built into the pcb behind the lcd, so the whole pcb has to be replaced AFAIK. Yes it requires a full tear down to do it, fairly basic to do, my phone is in pieces atm because the lcd needs replacing.
If the flex cable is the problem then none of those parts need replacing, it would be very unlikely in my opinion for all those parts to fail from a drop without it being flex cable related, possible though.

Hey, do you know where I can get a replacement pcb if I decide to take that route man? Seems hard to find that as a single part for sale...
I assume people replace their whole phone if they have a problem like mine :/

it's not THAT bad...considering a brand new one unlocked DZ goes for 450+ and i knew I could fix parts of the phone so for -200 cheaper...i don't know bro!
I just need to know if a replacement pcb is possible to get, or maybe just the flex cable is damaged in which I wouldn't need to replace something so crucial.
Who knows what to do?
EDIT: 450 where I live...Ontario, CA.

...i dunno...could even be water damage that did the deed to that phone....in which case you could be replacing a pcb...or not....I've seen water-loged phones come back to life before....sad thing is it might cost you a few to fix it properly...

Wow about the whole coming back to life thing you just said...thats exactly what my digitizer just did, so the left side of my lcd is now working including the home button!
Im guessing the touch panel ribbon was loose but it somehow shifted to functionality.
Great...now for the in ear speaker and power button, and 250 wont seem too bad!
Edit: anyone know how I can look for past signs for water damage like a colored change in a sticker or something?

There are 2 water damaged indicator stickers, 1 under battery and, 1 under the back housing, you can see it through the opening where the top tab of the battery door latches.
Edit: Forgot.... 1 on the battery too.

What color would the stickers be? They are both white, does that mean anything?

If they are pink they got wet.

250 is quite a bit for a device with issues, but good news is it isn't water damage by the sounds of it.
I'm an aviation electronic tech, and your symptoms definetly sound like a loose interface ribbon. If I were u id haul it apart and reseat the flex cable you guys are talking about. I would put a 85% chance that's the issue.

Sounds good guys.
However...even if it is probably the flex cable that is causing the remainder of my problems:
1. the in call speaker being super quiet
2. power button not working
Is there any other chance that the speaker and power button areas have loose connections? what should i look for when i open the phone aside from ribbon/flex cable connections?
I need to get the power button fixed because then i can move onto rom modifications and stuff to finally get locations!

i dropped my phone and something inside of it something got loose, now it wont charge or turn on

Just took it to a repair guy, he opened it up and said everything seems fine....no corrosion or anything from water...but the phone wont power on....any one here have any ideas? just shoot em, im willing to take anything

i tried, they wont cover accidental damage. And my warrantys been voided since someone opened it up..

I bought a second hand phone and it did turn on however there were a numbers of problems with my phone, it had a power button that didnt work, unresponsive parts on the lcd and a quiet in call speaker.
Your best bet before trying to replace the whole pcb is opening your phone using a teardown guide

Make sure you read it a couple of times and go through the pics so you know what your dealing with, find the power button, make sure its intact and adjust the ribbon cables.
Otherwise just find a cell phone repairer on a classified ad like criagslist or kijiji.

i had someone take apart the phone and they said everything inside looked good. Im going to take it to another place tommorow and see if they can fix it....otherwise this is the 2nd smartphone that died on me. HTC told me to go to Bell...and i bought this phone 2nd hand. Trying to send my Galaxy S in was a Pain....anyone here know of good 3rd party repair services in Ontario?

I hate to say it, but it was second hand for a reason. Ever try switching the battery? How about changing the power supply?

Yes. Start simple. First check your electron hose to make sure you are getting power to the device. Also check the battery as well as the prongs that connect with the battery tabs. If things are good there, then think about tearing into the phone.

no no, dont say that. This phone was fine for 3 months, i dropped it at a club i went to and water got inside the phone....i took it to 3 repair people and they all said the Main PCB motherboard is damanged (water) soo does anyone have any idea where i can find a motherboard?? i have no problem with costs of replacing it. As long as its not more than the phone itself.

You didn't mention water damage in the OP. You said something was loose. Water damage is completly different.
Try ebay.

Hey i found these 3 ads on ebay...do you guys think that a swap of the motherboards would be fine? heres the ads. I contacted the seller and they said the battery was used and thats it but phone seemes operational....i know its a risk, but is it worth it guys?
..need help on this one.

Reason being the other phones have minor problems, like speaker doesnt work, or some of those phones wont pick up signals and i think thats due to a bad radio flash or if i just flash a radio everything should be working fine.

can someone please clarify this? if i buy a phone with a speaker problem and transfer the main PCB board to my old phone...will there still be a speaker problem? or is the speaker a separate unit itself and not related to the pcb board?

one of the phones i am bidding for says it might not be able to guarantee a connection to mobile network (send sms,make calls) could that be a radio flash problem? would i be able to fix that??
another is one of the phones boots on and shuts off, i take it that could be a bad flash or something? its only about $20. just trying to weigh my options cause the new phones are lkike bidding for $350 lol im not that rich yet

I found out that my MOTHERBOARD is fine. There was water damage but not enough to go inside to the main board! My dad tested the battery voltage and found i wasnt getting any voltage.
i went to future shop and found a lady to let me use her battery and sure enough the battery was working and phone powered on!!! so i guess my battery was shot from dropping and popping out of phone while recording a video.

ordered these from ebay....are they any good? they look decent

Those look like the batteries I got. They were about 1/2 of the claimed mah rating. Worst case, they wiill get you running, and that charger is pretty good.

The Cause Of Screen Flickering With A "Possible Solution"

Many One X owners, including me, has be having from display/screen issues that are quite annoying. And apparently, none has a definite answer as to what the main cause is. hTC has exchanged all those faulty devices, claiming it's a "hardware" issue...while in fact, it's their stupid back covers...i'll explain as we speak.
First, to know what screen/display problem i'm talking about, please refer to this Video.
Few days ago, i got my hands on a "Dead" One X...but i just refused that fact...because it just works! but no screen....screen is always blank....can touch it, go to dealer and make a phone call even. Sometimes the screen turned, sometimes, and it was like in the video, exactly like it.....so what's the problem?!
yesterday, i'll be honest, i got mad at this phone and held it with a tight grip...my finger happened to press just above something...and the screen turned on! worked great in fact! i was astonished! it just worked....but, oops, i turned off screen, then when wanting to turn it back on...blank...
I kept pushing on the back casing of the phone, trying to find the same place that made the screen turn back on...and viola, same place pressed on, screen back on.
Wanna know what's causing all of this?

But you know, hTC ****ed this one up, just like it does on most devices with connectors on the back cover...*sigh*...like the sensation for example...
So what to do now?
i tried a bunch of things, and almost broke those connectors with a stupid thick aluminum foil on top of them...
also i tried bending them up, but that doesn't help either, as when the cover pushes them down, their shape will change and well...didn't work.
i also tried putting aluminum foil on the metal connectors on the actual cover...didn't help as well!
it seems only pushing on it from outside does the trick!!
i also tried pushing on the connectors together while the back casing is off, didn't work...as it seems there must be a triple connection...board, connectors, and cover...
I think the only solution would be with a new back casing? but...if hTC f****d it up with this one, wouldn't all back casing suck too?? or is this a manufacturing problem that the connectors are just short and won't connect well?!
here are pictures of how the phone turned on magically after pressing over that connector, and another of how the screen gets messed up when the, well, there's not a good connection...Thank you hTC!

Tomorrow i will buy a new back casing and report if that helped me or not.
I only came to this because i have no warranty...if you have warranty, please consider an exchange!
Oh, and finally, i was able to get into bootloader, first time i saw that screen! always has been blank!...pushing on the connector also did the trick.

If anyone has an idea on how to make the back casing come in better contact with those connectors, please let me know.

Well nah, would post it into General , as this was more like a guide. I wasn't bashing.. and not in a bad mood... If anything I bumped your thread up...
Also wanted to say that those contacts and that case seems to be f..cked up in general. As next to those you have the WIFI ones which in another thread, thats in General is shown how to fix...
My first comment was a compliment and you could clearly see I was smiling as I am on my avatar smiling. No reason to get defensive...

oh well...also WIFI connectors are bad?...no wonder SIII is flying and hTC is dying...

Soldering would fix this!
putting two round solders on the gold plates of the back cover. i will try that tomorrow. but i fear they would squash the connectors on the board? as that's what happened when i used two tiny balls of aluminum foil....one connector got squashed by it and i had to push it back up and play with it to make it look normal again.....hmmmm

lets first affirm tons of people have no problems with their wifi and their screens
so yes those connectors issues whether screen or wifi are another forum of a manufacturing defect, things might not be perfectly aligned and hence the issue
the flickering issue your thread title suggests finding the source of, isnt related to this, 90% of the corruption we saw out of box on the HOX turned out to be software including the back-light flicker which HTC fixed by readjusting the LCD voltage
moving on to your question a new back cover might very well fix it unless the misalignment is on the board
but im wondering why is this pin related to the screen to begin with? the Sensation didn't have such a pin you could remove the back cover and the screen kept operating, also the disassemble photos that were posted for the HOX showed the board and screen running perfectly without the back cover
as for the stupid copper foil, make sure you don't loose it unless you are planning to make a bomb its added to distribute Tegra3 heat

Before you do that, please check the WIFI thread. There was already one member that described that soldering or adding a wire might be possibly harmful in the long run.
Changing the electricity stuff, how its called, the resistance or something (for the antenna though)

I'm having the same damn issue (check the picture) and thanks to Arabology for the well explanation on the problem. what I did was to send my phone to the service center and they told me it will take 3 working days (today was just the 1st day) for the technician to diagnose the fault and decide whether to replace the device or to repair it.
given that its a well known defect - should I just demand an exchange for a new device just incase if they revert that they repaired my phone? because I am sure the chances for the problem to reoccur is high.
Also just so you know I purchased this phone only about 3 months ago in HTC roadshow launch of OneX in Malaysia. HTC needs to come out with really quality products otherwise they will loose all their customers to samsung & apple (I believe they already lost major % of their loyal customers to their rivals)
oh well hope to get a good news soon. will keep u guys posted.

well, My One X is just cursed, few days ago it feel off my hand and the screen got cracked. now i'm waiting for my local repair station to get hold of a One X digitizer.
ALSO, HUGE NEWS, seems i was wrong. it's not the connectors. it's the whole part where there is a copper kinda sheath over it...i guess that's where are the cores are plus the Nvidia Tegra chip??! turned out, when i push there, that the screen lights up. at first i thought it's the connector, coz that's the most reasonable right?
what could be wrong under that? well, that place can be taken off, there's a metal housing that can be lifted off....idk, nothing seems wrong there...but seriously, just a slight push lights up the screen! so now i'm using the oldest trick in the book, i put a wrapped paper at the back of the casing, just where it will push over the place i talked about, and now screen is always on....just this small push does the job!! no more flickering!
i repeat, it's not the connector nor the back casing.......only God and hTC knows what's going on...
i did further investigations and tried to relate the "push" to any connections that could be on the board from the other side, but after disassembling the phone, there does't seem to be anything on the other side of the board that needs that certain force to help the screen to light up....idk, this just boggles the mind.
...anyone has any clue?!?
BTW, phone is working great even with the cracked screen, playing Dark Meadow just fine

i say you should demand an exchange. hopefully the device they'll give will be of a different tier of products that doesn't have that silly, unknown problem.
also, i'm pretty well sure that they won't repair your device. as i read many users regarding this issue, all of them got an exchange......seems pretty messed up. and i doubt my paper trick will hold long before this issue comes back

now that i have a paper inside my back casing, i can see that my WIFI connection is not at it's best, because of the extra space it took. so i'll most probably solder all the connectors

there was some guy, who posted a youtube video of when he pushed a certain area of his screen (the front part), it would switch off!
It only did it when pushed in that area, it was literally like a second power button.
Sorry I don't know exactly what it was, just the fact that somebody else had a similar problem!

HTC repaired my phone as the screen was faulty, it had a yellow tint, when i sent it for repair it did have screen flickering, ever since its come back, with a new screen, i rooted it and also put in the NEW ARHD rom, 2.05.2 base or something, it has stopped flickering :fingers-crossed:

HTC needs to come out with really quality products otherwise they will loose all their customers to samsung & apple (I believe they already lost major % of their loyal customers to their rivals)

Finally I've got my OneX replaced with a new unit.:laugh: Hoping this will not have any sort of hardware faulty anymore.
interestingly. while waiting for my turn in the service center, I was just talking to a guy sitting and waiting beside me who came to report a problem with his OneX
and apparently its his 4th time visit to the service center. And all his previous 3 visits ended up with his OneX getting replaced each time....and each time with a different hardware issue (screen flickering / dead pixels / color faulty). Oh man....I thought the OneX was the best quality product from HTC.
and now I'm having a slight regret that I shud have just waited for another 2 more months and bought the SIII instead. God knows what other problems my OneX is going to come up with.

i did further investigations and tried to relate the "push" to any connections that could be on the board from the other side, but after disassembling the phone, there does't seem to be anything on the other side of the board that needs that certain force to help the screen to light up....idk, this just boggles the mind.
...anyone has any clue?!?
BTW, phone is working great even with the cracked screen, playing Dark Meadow just fine

Probably what's referred to as a dry joint or some other connection not connecting very well, not uncommon in electronics.
You need to get it repaired or replaced, simple as that. If it is a dry joint under one of the chips that use a ball grid array of solder points, you will never be able to sort that out yourself and it would be scrapped more than likely rather than a repair attempted for such a fault. To repair, it would need to go into a special over to heat it enough to melt the solder under the chip. Exerting pressure will just eventually make things worse as you can end up fracturing more of the soldered connections as there is little give to resist flexing.

Phantom digitizer problem.

Well after owning my HTC One X for a year I noticed that I'm having a problem with the digitizer (touchscreen). On the lower quadrant of the screen there is a rectangular (invisible spot) where the digitizer doesn't work properly. Sometimes causes the screen/keyboard/unlock all by itself. Aka the Phantom digitizer. When the digitizer is acting up I can't activate any part of the touchscreen in that area either.
Although this problem doesn't happen all the time. Just periodically through the day and some days more than others.
I think it's because of a dirty power supply to the digitizer that causes this problem. You may have seen other threads of people plugging in there phone and not being able to use the touch screen. This is also due to a dirty power supply.
Example: when I plug my phone into the wall at work (which I know is a dirty power supply) it creates the exact same problem.
Could the voltages/battery/power supply cause these problems with the digitizer?
I'm looking to fix this without spending money on a new screen.

Hi mate, I have to say that if I use an LG ac adapter my digitizer doesn't work properly... But as soon as I unplug it becames normal as always

I know that's caused by a dirty power source. Sometimes old buildings outlets and crappy wall chargers cause this. My problem is even on battery. I think I either have a bad connection on the ribbon connection for the digitizer or a defective digitizer overall.

Yes it was the digitizer and I figured out the problem as well! The polycarbonate unibody is very flexable and over time when you stick your phone in your pocket, sit on it by accident, hold it too tightly etc. etc... Th polycarbonate and the gorilla glass flexes that could cause damaging the digitizer. Another problem is that it gets worse over time so some type of connection loss.
A new digitizer fixed the problem and it still works to this day. My friend bought it from me after I did the repair myself and put a new polycarbonate body on it. Decided to go with the black color this time. If your going to do the repair yourself try and remove the old digitizer from the LCD BEFORE your buy your parts. This is because you are likely to damage the LCD like I did so I bought the LCD and digitizer together making the installation much easier.
My new polycarbonate body is much more stiff too so hopefully the problem doesn't happen again and no more scratches on the device. Sold it for $450 and only paid $100 for the parts on ebay.

Indeed, this should be some sort of a connection problem because in some positions my phone has a higher chance of reaction than at others.
What is also curious is that this stuff started happening to me after latest ROM update (I'm on stock). I recall that the phone became really hot during the update and suspect that some sort of glue melting happened but I am no engineer so I'm going to a repair center tomorrow. Hopefully they can figure out what is causing the connection loss; if a replacement is needed I will probably have to pay $200 for everything
Sigh. This phone brought me so much unhappiness with HTC I already made a decision that this was my last HTC phone, next one is going to be new Nexus. Used to really like the company when I was using the Incredible S..

So I took it to a repair center. What is curious, they said it is not a digitizer problem at all. They say it's a factory fault and willingly made the issue appear by pressing some certain part of screen.
Now I don't know what to do - sell it and buy something new or do the repair (the cost is approximately the same).

Black screen, only backlight works. Everything else is ok.

Sorry for my english, I'm hungarian, this is the best I can do.
So I bought a cheap (but not too cheap) SM-P905, but I can't get the screen to work properly.
The touch layer, the spen, the backlight works well, I managed to mirror the screen on my pc and everything else seems to be okay.
I got off the back cover, I tried to unplug and reattach every flex cable, even the battery. I tried to look everything under magnifying glass to see what could be the problem.
The lcd flex connector looks like this under my lens.
(Upload it in the next post, not working from the android app)
I tried to clean it with a needle, but it still looks like it is corroded or melted.
Is it possible that replacing this connector will get the screen back to normal? (I found flex connector replacement on the internet)
Or is it possible to repair it with some jumpers or something like this?
Is it melted because of some shorted circuit somewhere else, or because of a bad micro capacitor?
How and where can I locate and resolve this problem (s)? Maybe is it still the lcd that is simply dead and I can't bring it back to life?
I dont want to buy a screen, and a motherboard (neither only one of them )

I wanted to know how this thing can die?
It has to be caused by something.
Bad resistor/capacitor? Is it on the motherboard or on the lcd's circuitboard?? Or is it only the corroded flex connector??
I dont want to throw the whole tablet in the trash. Everything else is just operating fine.
If nobody can answer this, where should I write, where people can help with these very small components / resoldering / measuring what gone wrong here?

So today I measured the pins in worst condition. There are 2 pins that I tought can cause the problem and looks corroded. (Number 5 and 9 from the right) Both of them !are not used!. (There is a total of 3 pins that are not used on the connector/cable)
They are not lead through the flex cable, they have no function here.
So the problem comes from somewhere else, but I still don't know why they look like this.
Maybe I will try to seperate the screen from the body and look at it closer and its connectors/smaller circuit boards.

Hmm, that pic does not make me think its a corrosion problem. At best, it can lead to a finicky connection, but there seems to be enough there for proper electrical contact. If this were a headphone jack, for example, I would say apply pressure near the cable to see if the headset works properly, and if it does, then I know its a cable problem. No idea if you can try to apply pressure to the cable and see if the LCD turns on.
If the screen mirrors on the TV successfully, then there are a bunch of Samsung Service Codes you can use to test the LCD. Unfortunately I do not know them for this model, but google should get you the service menu very easily. There is definitely a test in there for the LCD that should give you a better idea what to expect.
If the cable is pretty cheap, I would also just pick up one and try replacing. Nothing to lose! AND if you have access to another identical device, you can try to stick this LCD on that device to see if its the LCD thats the problem or the motherboard.
Lastly, I would want to know if the glass on that LCD has ever been replaced. If they did a glass only replacement, its possible they overheated the LCD ... OR used too much LOCA glue that shorted the connectors.
Many possibilities, so I wouldn't call it a day yet. First, look for the service menu, thats the best place to begin.

I will try the service codes.
Unfortunately I don't have more devices. The easiest way would be to test the identical parts on a working one, but I don't know anyone who would risk his/her tablet for this
The other thing I can do is to get another lcd-glass unit from ebay or from ifixit and try it. If the problem was the lcd, it should work, I'm happy, but if its black, I will have (maybe) 2 working lcd units for sale. Or I have to get a new motherboard (sounds expansive).
I don't think that they replaced the glass on this device, it looks very used and scratchy, so it was working before.

There are more good news than bad, so I'm very happy.
So 1-2 days ago I started to get off the screen to see if I can seperate the LCD from the receiver. Turned out its not that hard. The only hard thing is to get it off the body in one piece. Lots of heating with a hair drier, and a LOT OF PATIENCE. If you can get it off in one piece you are on your way.
Seperating the glass from the LCD is very easy, did it in 10 minutes, I don't think it needs heating...
So I did it, then I saw some water damage (white things) on the back side of the LCD. There is a small board here too, so I cleaned the white thing off with some alcohol.
Then I put the lcd back and voilá, Its WORKING!!!
The only problem is that I damaged the touch screen glass, so I need to order a new one, but its under 20$ so no problem.
