Its in Settings, but this is not SafeStrap Support thread. follow link for more questions about Safestrap.
Is there any way to perform the native mobile hotspot mod without installing SafeStrap? I notice there was instructions on decompiling the framework file and editing some lines within that file. Is that the right interpretation or would I just install safestrap and flash the .zips from the recovery?
Thanks!

Thank you very much OP, Tether hack worked great! Happy we finally have a way to push framework-res.apk without a bootloop.
The procedure was exactly as stated. Download all files, install Safestrap, install recovery, reboot (don't be worried if Safestrap causes a crash and reboots 2-3 times), flash zip into stock ROM slot. Knox is still all fine.
I couldn't get Safestrap to come up after more than 1 reboot without reinstalling, but thats OK as tether hack (and fast charge...) was one of the only things missing for me with root.
Just flashed SafeStrap and everything looks like it went the way it was supposed to! Would I just flash the two mods and I'm done? I'm just wondering if I needed to do this part:
1. Decompile Framework
2. Edit values/Arrays.xml
Find:
Code:
<string-array name="config_mobile_hotspot_provision_app">

<item>com.samsung.spg.NewSPGActivity</item>

Oh no, three angels have fallen from grace as a result of your mis-leading title and posting in the wrong section.
Now for the goods I was gonna do the hack for that but I won't have time, its simple to do all you need its apktools and the knowledge of how to use it and you're good to go.
1. use apktool to de-compile framework-res.apk
2. navigate to res/values/arrays.xml
3. open arrays.xml in a notepad editor
4. edit the line "config_tether_upstream_types" change the 4 to a 5
5. save changes and re-compile framework-res.apk
from there you will be able to tether

wrong thread? I am talking about a Sprint, Galaxy Nexus running JOP40D stock and rooted and the wifi tethering functionality, this requires some dev work (see post above yours). so maybe I should have been more descriptive in my title or even my post I guess I assumed since I posted it in here it would be obvious sorry to anyone who may have been confused or mislead, if a mod wants to move it no worries :good:
Anyways... I will try the decompile/recompile steps and see if that works, I just didnt want to re-invent the wheel if someone already had done it
thanks!

Thanks this worked perfectly! For anyone choosing to do this things to note:
1. It will wipe your google account so you will have to re-login and setup the gapps
2. the framework-res.apk size will not be the same (in my case it was either a full MB larger if I unzip/reziped it with my changes or 4 MB smaller if I just dropped my new resources.arsc into the original apk.. very big size difference but everything still boots up and works *shrug*

hedrickms, first of all, thank you very much for doing this and posting it for the rest of us.
Would it be possible to post a "back to stock/restore to Sprint configuration" flashable .zip, just in case? (It's always nice to have that available in case I need my phone to appear to be truly unrooted and stock.)
-- Andrew
OK not sure if this works but here is a flashable .zip to return tethering to Stock (Locked) state. I did not flash this to see if it works so if you have issues please let me know and I will see what went wrong. The "tethering_4.2.1_Return_Stock.zip" is for Sprint Android 4.2.1 only and will not work with 4.1.1 or 4.1.2.

Hoping a dev such as ptmr3, or jamison904, and of course any other who have might the ability to rebuild a system apk could generate a flashable zip for the tmo - t989 that updates the necessary csc files and framework-res.apk files to eliminate the tethering lockdown tmobile puts us under in the new JB release.
I took a look at a thread that walks through the apk and csc changes to be made
(See [MOD][GUIDES] Unrestricted Native Tethering + Evade Data Cap Throttle + MORE! [in TMO SGSIII forum])
but truth be told I'm a little too weak in the code-fu to feel secure in making those changes myself.
I see that the newly derived roms have these features baked in, but I like having the "custom rom counter" at 0.
-thanks for your work, and thanks for any answers.

if on stock rom just download wifi hotspot widget and place it on your homescreen. then using root explorer go to system- app find tetheringprovisions.apk and delete it. last create a new apn name it tether and on apn line enter epc.tmobile.com and save it. you should now have unlocked tethering.
Lightly Tweaked Stock
Purpose of Rom
You may have noticed that this rom unlike others is essential all stock. I've done this for the people who want a clean rom to start their own development from or just like the complete stock experience without the hassle of Odin and rooting afterword.
Features
Based off UVMC6 (4.1.2)
Deodexed
Rooted with supersu
CM10 APN
Screenshots
UVMC6 Related Issues
If you don't use a radio based on a 4.1.2 rom you will get no signal bars and may experience frequent disconnects. If you're on a provider other then t-mobile like me you will be able to connect to your data network provider if cm10 supports it but you will need to disable wifi calling in the settings.
Flashing Instructions
Use Odin to get a custom recovery (Tested on TWRP 2.5)
Wipe System/Data/Cache/Davlik/Preload
Flash Rom
Reboot
Let sit for 10 minutes
Reboot agian
Enjoy!

I've never had any problem's charging to 100% with UVMC6, did you try wiping your caches and/or data? You could try to charge to 100% in a recovery or when the phone is off and reboot that way, it's unlikely it's a hardware issue but if it is that would let you know.

Tetheringpervision.apk is hard coded into the framework-res.apk. For it to successfully work you would also need to decompile the framwork-res.apk and navigate to red/values/array and remove the part about tetheringpervision. Then recompile the apk and push it to system/framework. if you need help let me know.
Also the APNs need to be unlocked or you won't be able to change it. Last there is a hidden APN for tethering, if it isn't removed you will never be able to connect.

Hey southsidexz, thanks a million!! xda is an entire universe of information and I would have truly burned the midnight oil looking for this to no avail. Gonna try it out now. So far that's my only issue with infamous 9, it seemed that wifi tethering worked natively on 8.0. Again, many many thanks!

Your welcome. Always glad to help people around.
On another note I was dumb enough to rename the framework to old before I replaced it so my Phone got killed..... However thanks to cabloomi and his Recovery Image to .tar.md5 odin flash, I was able to flash CWM latest recovery so it could read my MicroSD card and then flash the zip I created that flashed the framework file. If in case someone else does it... and doesn't want to re-flash the rom or restore old backup.
You can flash Framework via recovery, following this thread instrucitons to get the framework apk into a flashable format for recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840098
If in case you have a recovery that won't read your external SD card (like I did) you can use this link to flash any recovery via ODIN.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281287
(Side Note: if you get errors, please see post #23 on the link above, it provides the solution if you get errors)
Note:I am not responsible for damaging or further damaging your phone, I am just providing help/alternate solutions. Your phone is your responsibility
I follow the steps above and got back up running.

Just to make this easy I had the same problem on replacing framework, too. Then I searched on some other forums here and found out you can copy or move the framework apk into system folder and fix permissions then move that framework I to the framework folder to replace over the existing apk and just reboot. Just make sure to make a nandroid before doing anything just incase something goes wrong.
Thanks
Thanks Carlos2200,
I would've taken that route but sadly I couldn't get into the system folder. I wasn't able to do a nandroid restore as my SD card got messed up and the backup was gone.
Definitely for anyone, make sure you have a good Nandroid before anything.
I will update that the method I mention above does remove all your accounts only. So you will have to re-add them.

An alternative....
For those who don't care to bother with the framework files in the event that 3minit is updated to work with 4.3, I came across an app on the play store called "wi-fi tether router" that seems to work, though I haven't a clue why it does. Changing the user agent on the browser renders it successful it seems. Good luck to all!
Sprint Diagnostics AppEasy Method for MSLChange PRL on the Fly
Discalaimer: All features do not work but for our intent, this is a SUPER easy way to acquire MSL and write PRL files.
Cheers - TD
Prerequisites:
Touchwiz Rom
Your phone must be rooted and deodexed!
Signature verification may need to be disabled. If you do not see the app in your app drawer, please pull and post the services.jar file from system/framework.
Please include build and phone info and I will modify the file and resend it to you.
Installation:
Flash this in recovery.
Usage:
Getting your MSL code - in the app select Get MSL Code!
Write custom PRL - place .prl file(s) on internal SD, select PRL Manager then Write PRL. This will bring up a list of available prl files on SD for you to choose from.
Note: Not all of the features listed in the app work for the Galaxy SIII.
Does this app work for cm roms or just tw thanks

Thanks for trying. There is a file dependence that is required. If the file is missing the app won't even launch.
For the Note2, yes it should work on quite a few Touchwiz devices but the PRL write feature may not. It should least acquire MSL though.
The only issue I've noticed is that acquiring MSL does not work on all carriers.
Thanks I'll keep trying at least Ill have it when I go back to tw pretty sweet app I'm on sprint also

stupid question.
I flashed the sprint diagnostics app and I can't find it in my apps list. The app flashed successfully
where does it go?
I'm using a note3.. that may be the issue?
thanks

Pull your services.jar from system/framework (or extract it from your rom.zip).
I use root explorer built into Rom Toolbox, navigate to system/framework and copy and paste services.jar to SDcard.
Zip it up and post it here and I will modify the jar file so signature verification is removed and send it back to you in flashable form.
Edit: And you're on a Touchwiz rom correct? This is for Touchwiz only.

I can't say. That is why I posted a specific jar for that users build.

Awesome!
Been procrastinating flashing my second S3 to Cricket and this made getting the MSL so much easier...Think I'll flash over today! The only other ways I knew involved downgrading to a ROM below 4.1.2 and using the Get My MSL app or buying CDMA Workshop (which is just north of 100 bucks.) Had the MSL in less than 5 minutes total with this method. Thanks!
