Visionary works fine for me. Did you set the USB to developer mode or whatever it was in the instructions?!
Go to the HOME screen and press the Menu button.
Press Settings.
Press Applications.
Press Development.
Tick USB Debugging.
Now try rebooting, then try Visionary again. Worked for me
This isn't working for me
I been at this for hours and I'm seriously getting upset. I open the app, check the boxes I'm told to check. Hit temp root and the triangle comes up and then it goes away, I'm left with a black screen for hours. I have rebooted, reset, factory reset and done every step over again and I'm still left with the same results. Why is this not working for me? It's becoming a headache.

Seriously don't use visionary, it has a very high chance of bricking your device.
use the recommended guide here it's very safe and not too difficult.
-Nipqer
Yes, do not use Visionary, go with the gfree guide and get adb set up my friend. If u mess up, u can brick ur phone, as said from above. Well as long as u have eng hboot, u can easily unbrick, aslong as u know what commands to put in adb.

DO NOT use Visionary. Its known to brick phones. Do your rooting once, do it right, with the gfree method.
I tried one of the rooting processes today and it didn't work. Now when I turn my Evo on it goes no further than the white HTC screen that you get when you turn it on. When I try to run the RUU it gets a connection error and won't go through. Can someone please help?

If you pull the battery can you get to the bootloader screen? (hold volume down and power button when turning on)
You should be able to do what Greenfieldan suggests. It is possible to work through this issue, so don't fear but it make take a few tries.

Thread stalking is fun, I see which thread you are reading, but you may have to reset you phone.
Do you either:
Have a recovery installed (if you aren't sure, then you may not)
have a PCIMG36 on the root of your sdcard, (if you aren't sure then you may not)

Go in to fastboot and you should see something toward the top that says "FASTBOOT USB", once there run the RUU

I have a pc36img file on the root of my sd card. It says that it can't open it when i select flash zip from sd card.
Just download the actual ruu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060. It will be one of the .exe files same version of you had on the phone will prolly work best. Then do what xhausx said and run the ruu file once there. Thanks xhausx btw cause i was confused too.

Need Help
I know this is an old thread, but I'm working on an old phone. Hopefully some of you guys are still following this.
My father has an EVO 3D that showed up one day stuck on the white HTC screen. The only remedy was to pull the battery. I thought it would be no big deal to just go into the boot menu and either try and run recovery, or at worst do a factory reset. Both of these options failed. I even made a few attempts at trying from the SD card with a ROM or two. So I downloaded the RUU direct from HTC thinking that would finally take care of the problem. But after connecting up in FASTBOOT mode and running the RUU, it eventually fails when the update gets to the point that it's supposed to restart the phone in bootloader mode. Because at that point the phone just restarts to the white HTC logo again, and the software times out telling me that it can't connect to the device. Any help here other than passing me a trash can Thanks in advance!
Hello,
I got my Evo today and am pretty excited! I want to get this thing rooted and some CM7 nightlies going on I am familiar with android/rooting, adb, fastboot, and all that. What got me is seeing the different stuff for different evo's My Evo is as follows..
Baseband 2.158.00.11.19
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
HARDWARE 0003
H Boot 2.10.0001
Its the white back...
Anyway I am looking for the correct root method, and would like clockwork recovery, if possible. Once I get that I hope it is a bit easier to find CM7 for it, lol.
Thanks in advance

Fairly quick. Make sure you have the windows drivers installed [if on windows]. Also, install, then uninstall HTC sync. Once the drivers are loaded, on your phone enable usb debugging, connect to pc in CHARGE only, then run unrevoked, and put your phone down. It should reboot 2 times...taking roughly 5-8 minutes, give or take, and you'll be all set. You'll be on clockwork recovery by default, and you can upgrade to the latest recovery using rom manager.
here's a compilation of info for you. I recommend unrevoked btw

This next link (first one) is where you will actually go to free your phone from the man lol. If you are going to use a Windows computer to root, there is an extra step of installing some drivers:
* http://unrevoked.com/#evo
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsoVzMadiQE (Video using unrevoked and drivers)
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXWm8262iMU&feature=player_embedded (Another video using unrevoked)
Drivers link and instruction info for windows:
* http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install (FYI, the drivers link is near the top of the page in the link)
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXDszE0Ytn8 (How to install HBoot drivers)
Good luck!!
Thanks for the fast responses! I am downloading the HTC sync, kinda slow server on their end. I have the H Boot drivers installed and ready to go. Let me get this straight, in charge only mode I run "reflash package" from my PC (windows 7).
Thanks

Correct. Just make sure usb debugging is also enabled, found in settings> applications > development.
It has rebooted twice now, but the app gives me a error...
Internal error: Uninstalling Package Failed
Recovery Image: Clockworkmod Recovery
Do I leave it sit, or rerun it? Or is it done?

Disconnect the phone from the pc. Boot into the bootloader by turning your phone off, then holding vol+down as is turns on. The select recovery. Also tell me if it says S-OFF at the top. If you get the red triangle, you're rooted, but no recovery and I can give you the clockwork recovery.
Edit: This was my 666th post. Its special because each of my names [first, middle, last] all have 6 letters, = 666.

The white screen , yes from there I chose recovery, and thats when I see the phone with triangle. Was I to run this from H Boot (white screen)? I ran from home...
Okay you scared me. Put that on your sdcard, boot into bootloader, and when it asks to update, select yes, the reboot phone and you'll be set.

Also, its possible to have a bad flash [it happens to other users] so no need to worry. You're in good hands.

I have no clue, must be something to do with the unrevoked, because as soon as I clicked force close the unrevoked app popped up the error message..
Well basically re-run the whole process from the begging, the unrevoked on the comp I mean.
I have a htc desire Z which turns to blank screen after i restarted it after it fell from a height of about 70cms.
I still have it in warranty and I have a rooted rom Virtuous Unity v1.25.0 flashed on it.
Will they be able to notice that i'm using a rooted rom since nothing is coming on the screen as I can't unroot it since nothing is coming on the screen.
By the way, the phone responds to the touch input and it also boots into recovery which i can sense by its vibration.
So, if anyone has got their phone replaced through htc warranty, can he/she tell me how to undergo through this procedure to get it done in least time efficiently.
And can someone suggest me a way to boot a shipped rom on it with the fact that i can't see anything and the RUU shows a connection error when i try to run it on my phone since USB debugging is not enabled on it.
I managed somehow to turn on USB debugging by selecting HTC sync when i connected it to my laptop, but since the screen is blank I can't go in settings and turn on the USB debugging, sp when it restarts to install the rom, the connection error appears.
Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

U said its responding to the touch right?
So you actually can guess where you can enable usb debugging when you look up sum screenshots right?
I dont know if they r able to see that your phone is rooted or not but when the screen isnt working they probably wont check that? Im not sure but i think there is a good chance to get your phone replaced, i dont think that they will do everything to check if your phone is rooted.
Peace.

yes, i can enable usb debugging if i'm aided with some screenshots but I searched around and wasn't able to find any screenshot for this.
All that I found was that how to go into recovery and start update from sdcard.

F**k. That's not gone well buddy but! Ill do my best to help Ok so I think you have hot your device stuck in qualcomm diagnostic mode. Which isn't very good. But, some people have had some luck coming out of it when the device vibrates 3 times. Also since you are full s-off (I assume by xtc clip?) Then you may be in luck
Afaik the idea behind that mode is that the phone is doing things, but with no visual. So, if a recall correctly you can put a recovery that is flash able by BootLoader and it will flash it. But I think you should take your stock ruu, remove the rom.zip by using a process manager and then throw that on the root of you sdcard after renaming it pg76img.zip (I think that's the wfs code??) Boot the phone into BootLoader and wait for two or so minutes. We will assume that it has asked you to perform the sdcard update. Push volume up. That will hopefully make it install the rom ect and fix it up for you. But be careful and remember to RESEARCH this before you do anything. If I recall correctly their is a thread dedicated to this! Good luck man

thanks for trying to help)
I followed some guide i found using google to get s-off... atleast i assume it worked since on the phone it changed it from s-on to s-off.
I tried placing the zip on the sd card and waited 5mins hit vol up then 10 mins hit volum up again, then took out battery reinserted but just get three vibrates and blackscreen again on reboot.
Looks like virgin mobile replacing it may be my last hope ...
That's not good. Looks like it. Well, in theory your phone should be stock. So they can't refuse you on the grounds of you messing with it. Just say it stopped working and you don't understand or something like that.
