Rooted and unlocked last night. Going to start uninstalling the bloat with Titanium backup. Are there any apps I need to stay away from?
Right now Im looking at getting rid of all the Google Books, Magazines, etc. What about the Sprint apps?
I got rid of the sprint id sprint zone and sprint connection optimizer. Along with backup, email, email widget, music, music widget, memo, memo widget, tasks. There might be more but those for sure.

But the backup app and memo are actually useful...

Titanium replaced backup and keep replaced memo. But that's for me. Everyone is different.

I don't use a lot of the apps that came preinstalled and am just curious of disabling them will "break" anything or have a negative impact on performance or battery for any reason. These are the apps I don't use/would like to disable:
Books
Email
Google+
Latitude
Messenger
Places
Videos
Talk
Just don't need em. All Verizon apps were disabled with no problems.

Why wouldn't it be? I keep Google Talk disabled because it was a huge source of battery drain for me in the past.
Just not sure about some of them like Google+, not sure how deep integration is. Also videos, not sure if that's tied to the market somehow

I disabled messenger (not the Google+ thing, the built-in sms app) without any ill effects. I read on here somewhere that your gallery will FC if you disable Google+.
I don't just disable them, I use root explorer to delete them for good. Deleted Google+ with no ill effects, and a ton of other stuff I will never use.

You'll just have to test them one by one. From my experience, disabling google+ can cause the gallery to crash.

Books, Talk and Email are surely fine.
Latitude and Places may mess with Maps but they're probably fine.
Google+ (and therefore Messenger), along with Videos may mess with Gallery.
Just take a few hours and disable them 1 by 1 and see if anything happens.
I removed google+ with no adverse affects on the gallery.
Ended up just removing the whole lot. No problems thus far. Places is tied to maps though so unfortunately that will stay. Does anyone else's maps just start running randomly in your recent tasks. GPS and location are both disabled.

I disabled many: clock, calculator, doc viewer, earth, news & weather, and voice dialer ... as I use alternative apps. Never tried disabling critical ones (e.g., G+). Every thing seems OK.
I faced a problem upon updating system from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2. BUT I'm not sure of the error in updating if it came from disabling stock apps or something else.

Yeah, I've stopped caring about it. I burn more battery trying to track it down then just letting it run (at that, I don't think its actually using any measurable amount of battery). Its obviously doing something worth-while if it keeps poppin up.
You guys mind if I use some of the info in this thread for the GN apk doc I started on?

Everything on the list minus places and latitude have been disabled for a couple days now with no issues whatsoever. Books enables itself with each reboot but I stopped caring and just left it up. Doesn't ever seem to run and I'm thinking it might be tied to the market in some weird way.

G+ and Gallery sync photos so just check settings for that in accounts and in app.

Anyone, uses google backup service? In previous android versions, it was always advised to always untick this service to turn it off basically as it killed the battery. Is this still the case? and who actually finds this service useful please?.
See no battery drain here, very handy when flashing roms etc as you have a cloud backup

Cheers buddy, the only only thing is it doesn't show what it backs up, is there a list or guide of what it actually backs up.
Backs up apps in play store and will automatically redownload them. Contacts as well as wifi passwords etc and bookmarks Internet preferences all come back when I flash a new rom.
Google sync allows photos and music etc to sync across different devices etc.

I wander how much data this chews up then.
I used it for a while but after using Titanium Backup for no more than a day decided to switch all my backups to that. It does everything that google's backup does but with ALL your data and preferences, and you can have it sync locally and directly with dropbox and now even box.net, which I'll take over google's server's anyday.
Although I do keep my contacts and such synced with my gmail account, so I only have to deal with my preferences and data (such as sms texts) when needing to backup
I use it too and battery is fine. It backs up so much useful items, wifi and its password so a wipe instantly goes to my wifi to start pulling down the apps. It saves your wallpaper, settings, and it even states currently that it backs up the app data, but I'm not sure about that.
Hi i was wondering if i can freeze these builtin apps without any issues?
Earth
Email (non gmail)
Google+
News and weather
Street view
Talk
Voice dialer
Voice search
Not planning to use them ever, so i plan on freezing them or is it better to remove them?
Yes, you should be fine.
Ok thanks, how about MAPS? I dont think ill use it anytime soon, is it safe to freeze?
You can uninstall maps I think. If not, yes you can freeze
You can safely freeze and/or remove all of those. To be safe just freeze them and if you don't have any ill side affects after a couple of days then remove them.

Freeze talk and test all features work for play (market) . Past market piggy backed off talk for account verification. If all works then good to go. All the other apk are good to go for sure
I rarely use more than 4gb in a month, and my data resets on the 4th.
I deleted alot of apps on the 4th but I dont remember what all I deleted. I checked my data usage today and was shocked at what I saw. Using MyATT it shows usage being close to the same.
My question is there anyway to figure out what app or apps used nearly 2gb of data in 1 day?
I didnt download any large files or tether or anything. Just xda browsing and surfing the net. Ive attached last months data usage to give you an idea of how I use data. As well as a screenshot of the MyATT app and my data usage for this month so far.
Thanks for any help or ideas

If you scroll down in Data Usage, it should tell you the amount of data your apps are using. If you tap on each app, it will show you how much of the data it uses is being used in the foreground or background.
If you look in the pic, it says removed apps used 1.85gb
Im trying to figure out if I can see what apps used so much data

Removed Apps is all the apps you uninstalled. It compiled it as one and added up all the total data usage of the uninstalled apps prior to being installed.
You can go to Google Play's website and look under "Other apps in my library" to see all the apps you have on your account, even if you uninstalled them from your phone.
Of course, it won't tell you which app used how much data since it's no longer on your phone, but knowing which apps you had uninstalled should give you an idea how much data they would use. For example, if you had uninstalled a torrent app, it would certainly be the culprit. Apps that also constantly sync with a server, such as weather apps/widgets and streaming video/music apps, would also be likely culprits. It's also possible most, if not all, of the apps you uninstalled combined would have been the culprit since they may have automatically updated or synced to a server in the background a few times.
Unfortunately, it doesn't keep that kind of detail for uninstalled apps. But looking at "Other apps in my library" in Google Play's website would at least give you a general idea.
Thanks everyone for the help. Im thinking it was the free talking caller id app. That is the only app that ive had other problems with.

Did you delete the cache of the Samsung Gallery app? I noticed 438mb data usage the first day I got the phone from the gallery app syncing all my Facebook and picasa albums. My coworker had the same thing.

Just the answer i was looking for. THANK YOU. I was going to post why i have over 1/2 a GB on removed apps.
For future reference, there is an app called "my data manager" that will monitor all this for you and break it down into easy to read charts to show you where your data goes each month. It will also show projected use and daily allocations to keep it within your cap.

+1 on this. Have it running on every mobile on my plan (5). Great way to track usage.
Sent from somewhere in the Kessel system using JediX 6.1.2 on an AT&T Galaxy Note 2 and Tapatalk.
Im having the same issue with att it seems the data counter doesnt reset properly.
My bill resets on the 17th but on the 18 of this month I had already used 5 gb according to dialing *3283#. But when I check on the att website through my lap top it shows the correct amount 400mb.
Might want to give it a try and see.
It's done that for the past 2 months.
I called ATT and they said since I dowloaded a large game the night before my data flipped to zero I shows on next months data usage which is BS.
I've had ATT since 2008 and I would always get zeroed out at the start of my bill no matter how much data I use the day before it's supposed to start at 0mb.
Hi,
Was hoping someone could help clear up a question that's been bugging me for a while about Android apps. Right now, I use an Apple iPad for a tablet and have bought quite a few apps over the years from the iTunes store. I can share these purchased apps with my wife who also has an iPad and an iPhone by logging into my account from her phone, and downloading from there.
My question is can the same be done for Android? I have a few apps (mainly games and a few system utilities) that I would like to be able to use on my son's Nexus 7 tablet. I have purchased these apps legit from the Play store, is there any way I can put them on other devices too?
Thanks.
Yes you can you just use the same procedure that you do with Apple just sign in to the play store from the nexus tablet everything will be available from my apps

I did this for my wife. She has her own google account and I added mine to her phone so that she can access my apps and music. When you do this on the tablet you may want to go to the google account settings and disable sync for your email, contacts, etc., otherwise your son will have full access to your info.
