Hello
Is it possible to flash T-Mobile M919 radio on an international galaxy S4 I9505 to get T-Mobile LTE ?
Did anybody do that successfully ?
Thanks
I haven't heard of anyone attempting that so I will definitely say no to that and I wouldn't recommend trying it

No, it's not just the radio, the hardware supports different bands; it won't work.
You will only get edge.

Not the bands it supports.

What I understand is : I9505 and M919 have the exact same hardware, the difference is in the radio file which makes the 2 devices have different LTE band. I believe the only difference is the radio programming which makes the difference but wanted to see if anybody manged to do it actually.
Many AT&T Galaxy s2 users flash T-Mobile radio and get T-Mobile AWS bands on their devices.

I'm telling you because I had the i9505, I only got Edge. You will get 4G (NOT LTE) in SOME areas where the network has been reframed.
I see. Thanks exel
Too bad I was thinking to buy it but if it's not gonna work with T-Mobile LTE that's a deal breaker although my city is 99% refarmed, but LTE is something else !
Didn't you try flashing a T-Mobile radio (or any mod) to make it happen ?

Did you have the guts to try this in the end? I am thinking about flashing the M919 modem on my I9505 to see if I can get T-Mobile LTE in New York City.
I'm in the very same situation, and the thing is i've been hearing conflicting stories and accounts of people saying that it doesn't work, to others saying that they managed to get the 4g /lte working somehow, either through aws band ,or other software tweaks... I just want a concrete answer as to whether or not it's possible and if so how to do eet ? otherwise i just have an expensive smartphone that only gets 3mbps dwn, and 1mbps up at best on t mobiles h+

I figured this would be the best place for a post. I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus in Australia and with Telstra's new 4G LTE network being recently introduced, is there anyway I could enable my device to pick up the signal? It should be on the standard 1800MHz frequency, though it may not be prioritising it as the connection if that's the case.
It should technically be possible assuming the phone can pick up 1800MHz (which after some searching, it can afaik). It's more of a question of how.
Thanks in advance.
I don't believe this is possible but I sure do hope it could be.
I am in a Telstra 4G LTE area but currently using Next-G.

They are apparently to be getting an upgrade via Telstra to support LTE, so it should be possible. Unless I was lied to, which is always possible when you put the back-of-house tech guys on the spot. This will apparently be happening late in the year though, and it seems stupid to wait that long when the facilities are already there to be used.
I thought the GN was only capable of 21Mbps max.
Looking through the specs, GSM GPRS and EDGE support 1800MHz but HSPA does not...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
The Telstra HSPA uses 850MHz band from memory, the new Telstra LTE uses 1800MHz. Even if the device is limited to 21Mbps, I'd at least like to be able to get to that speed.
Hoping someone knows how.
GSM and LTE are two different platforms. It's like trying to use a AMD processor in a Intel socket. It just doesn't work.

So even though it has the capability to pick up 1800MHz, it's impossible to utilise it?

Well,
There are LTE versions around, and I'm wondering whether they will work with Telstra or not. Another question is about possibility of flashing LTE firmware onto GSM phone and recovering it back if something goes wrong. Has anybody tried that?

It will not work. There aren't "LTE versions". There is 1 LTE version being sold (1 more on the way for Sprint), and its a CDMA/LTE device from Verizon USA.

Best case scenario you just ODIN back to GSM firmware. Worst case, you brick your phone.
Don't try it. It won't work. Waste of time. Flashing different firmware to the phone isn't going to change the physical radios in the device. Just buy an i9250 and you'll get HSPA+.
Yeah just to make it clear in case there's any confusion, the nexus will absolutely not work with lte. Not possible at all, no way to flash anything etc. It is missing the hardware needed.
Or even flash it in At&T SG3. Samsung said the hardware are the same and have all the frequencies. i believe it might not be advertised this way from the carriers. Just thinking out loud.
Sorry i posted in the wrong section. Admin please move to Q&A
sorry again
Eh, I dont think so. Not at first anyway... after some hackery it might be possible.
The US versions are all the same.
The International version is very different.
It will never work.
I have yet to get 5 bars on my SGS3. Kinda odd.
Not a good idea as someone already stated they're different. I did that once by accident with the original galaxy s. Flashed the canadian firmware for the US version of the phone and ended up bricking it. Not even a jig bought it back to life.
It should work with the at&t and t-mobile sgs3 just like with the skyrocket and t-mobile's sgs2

It hasn't been tested yet on the S3. And while it works on the Note, it is far from optimal. I have not read since the early stages but it would freeze and get awful battery life on T-Mobile.

The US [GSM] models, ok. The international model, 100% no.
And as I understood, the T-Mobile version is pentaband out of the box (it will get AT&T 3G/4G 1900 MHz) because T-Mobile is moving to that frequency. So if anything, get the T-Mobile one and use it on AT&T if you don't care about LTE.

The Note had abysmal battery life from what I read. Just wait for someone to do it (they will) so you don't have to possibly return whichever one you buy.

Well the At&T Galaxy Note is what inspired me to think it might be doable!! The At&T Note i have is working fine with Simple Mobile and picking up 4g all the way. the battery sucks anyways even with the At&T modem. Also, you guys should note that stationed in Kuwait and im using the At&T Note with T-mobile modem overseas and still working great. Yes i have 3G as they dont have 4G here. they funny thing is that i still shows 4G and run about 19Mbps in most places.
I can get the international SGIII in Kuwait for $250 16G unlocked (NICE RIGHT?) but when im home i use the Simple mobile network(T-mobile).
you can call it greed but i want to have 2GB RAM, LTE, T-mobile 4G and the ablity to use every network in the world
I hope someone can make this happen
The reason it worked with the AT&T Note is because the T-Mobile S2 used the same SoC (Snapdragons S3). The US Galaxy S3's have Snapdragon S4's, the International has an Exynos 4412. The SoC's (CPU, RAM, Radios, DAC) are COMPLETELY different. It will NOT work. It's not software magic that got the Note to work. It's the fact that it supported the 1700 MHz frequency. The Exynos SoC's radio doesn't. You'll end up bricking the phone and requiring a JTAG.

Can you please confirm this, if I get the T-mobile version, and get it unlocked and use my existing AT&T sim on it, it will get 3G/4G speeds?. Would the international version also not give the same?. 4G speeds with AT&T?.
Thanks.

I'm using the i9300 (International) on Straight Talk AT&T, which runs on AT&T's base network, and I get full HSPA+ (of course, no LTE). The i9300 runs on AT&T's bands, so if you used it on T-Mobile you'd only get EDGE (for now, because they're moving their network onto the same frequency as AT&T). If the T-Mobile version is indeed pentaband as I suspect, then unlocking it and using it on AT&T will give you the same data speeds as using the international version on AT&T.
I've got an unlocked AT&T Galaxy SIII, and I only get Edge for my data connection. Do I need to flash a T-Mobile radio? APN settings look okay, as far as I can see.
Also, can I flash a T-Mobile ROM and use Wifi calling, or is that asking too much?
I searched and couldn't find anyone asking these questions in the Q&A forum....
there are already like 3 threads below this one concerning the 3g/4g topic on a att sg3 working on tmobile. No it will not work because att sg3 does not support the aws tmobile frequencies. you will only be able to get edge. NOW if it were a tmobile sg3 on att then it would work.
All the threads I could find in this form on my search went the other way: T-Mo phone on AT&T.
Does anyone actually know whether a T-Mobile modem on an AT&T phone would work or not? I looked at the main board in my phone, and it's labelled with both SGH-I747 and SGH-T999, which makes me think the internals are fully identical.
I'd like to know this too! I also have an AT&T Galaxy SIII and was seriously considering moving to T-Mobile because of the new unlimited data plan they were going to start offering on 9/5. I had also looked through this forum, and could only find questions of the situation the other way around, T-Mob GSIII phone on AT&T network.
Basically, was wondering:
- is there a hardware limitation that APN settings and/or installing a new modem will not get me good data speeds?
- would I need to burn a new modem?
- I'm assuming at minimum I'd need new APN settings, and am assuming T-Mobile would be able to help with that. Right?
Thanks, really interested in being able to do this!

AFAIK, the radio's are different and flashing a T-mobile modem could possibly brick your device. It would be much easier to buy a T999 and use it on T-Mobile (it'll even work on AT&T 3G if you want to switch back, no LTE though).
The SoCs are different. Flashing a T-Mobile modem will not give you T-Mobile HSPA.
Looks like I didn't take any pictures of that side of the phone while I had it open, and I'm not eager to pop it open again. It definitely listed both models on the PCB. If I'm remembering correctly, it's on the same side as the SIM and SD card slots, so it's just matter of removing the back plate to see it, no more disassembly than that.

Do you have part numbers for the two? According to wikipedia, they are the same Snapdragon S4 MSM8960. I just find it hard to believe that they would be different, though if they have the same pinout, that would explain the markings on my PCB.
This has been rehashed countless times. They are not the same phone. If the phones were the same, people would not be in here asking if they were the same. The MSM8960 comes in more than one flavor, with different modem parts. Yes, the CPU's are the same, but the MODEMS ARE DIFFERENT. It is an S4 Qualcomm part that comes in many different configurations. Instead of just reading until you get to some information that reinforces your preconceived notion, try reading a little further into the links at the bottom of the page and elsewhere. Seriously, if you really really don't think that Qualcomm would make different versions of the same chip, or configure them differently for the hundreds of different customer requirements, then fine, don't believe me, but it defies logic. Sorry about being an ass.

Thanks for the useful response. For those looking for even more detail, here's a link: http://www.qualcomm.com/sites/default/files/common/snapdragon-specs-06.07.12.pdf
According to that the MSM8960 (chip in I747?) has a "World Mode" modem, while the MSM8260a has a UMTS modem.
Edit: Ah, and I see both of you have answered this question before, which I would have found if I searched on MSM8260a. The threads have been dead for over a week, so I'm not surprised I missed them, but thanks for answering the same questions again.

T-Mobile uses a frequency for their 3g and 4g network that only T-Mobile branded phones have. Any other GSM phone will never get 3g or 4g on T-Mobile network unless it supports the T-Mobile band, which I believe is 1700MHz. It's limited by hardware. Nothing you can do to the phone will give you the 3g/4g you have to have a T-Mobile branded device.

Not completely true. Since The Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Note (AT&T) have software radios, you can flash a radio from the TMO GSII and get 4G on TMO. I was running mine and many customers of mine like that for months until i switched phones.

This is NOT TRUE, please be careful when making such "absolute" statements -- I just got a ATT i747 from craigslist, and it DOES work with the $30 Walmart plan - on 4G and LTE (depending on location).
The TRUE ANSWER IS -- IT DEPENDS -- if you live in an area that was recently upgraded to LTE (in my area was 02/13), you can get LTE/4G since t-mobile added support for it on 700 MHz (band 4) AWS (unverified - source: youtube video named "Tmobile 4G on att i747 gs3 data fix". Sorry I am not allowed to post web-links yet).
Anyway, I DO get 4G/LTE, I guess I was lucky

you will be able to make phone calls and text people no problem.
the only problem you will have is going to be data connectivity and data speeds because the NOTE2 for AT&T is meant to be used with AT&T LTE.
T mobile's main data band is 1700 which the AT&T phones usually do not have.
To answer your baseband or modem question I believe this thread does not have a modem or baseband for T mobile. You might have luck looking over at their forums, I am not sure.

The Dell Streak 5 is like the Nexus 4 it has all the HSPA bands. The LTE band for T mobile most likely will be different from AT&T. You can try to unlock it and compare the coverage and speed to your dell streak. I had a dell streak. Great phone!! sold it about a month ago for like 180 bucks.
My suggestion if the unlocked AT&T Note 2 isnt working properly and you want to stay with T MOBILE I would sell it and get the international version.
What you need to is search for how to "enable aws" and you will have 4g working on your device.

LoL! I was getting ready to say that.
All I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope T-Mo uses the same freq as AT&T's LTE...
Then again given the circumstances of T-Mobile shortly taking over MetroPCS for their LTE coverage, they may have a larger or wider band of LTE frequency ranges.
_
I will apparently have T-Mo's 42MBPS HSPA+ as opposed to AT&T's 21MBPS HSPA+
_
Then again, that was my whole intentions of getting an AT&T Note 2 as to T-Mo's Note 2, I've been told there's no LTE Support for the T-Mobile version, but with AT&T I'd have more likely of a chance at having LTE support, once it's available... I still don't to this day don't get why T-Mobile released a crippled down version knowing that they'd have LTE in the near future.
I just didn't know it wouldn't work right away straight outta the box.

Technically no T-Mo customer has LTE yet, until April or so I've been told.
Unless you can predict the future or something, then no one knows for sure.LoL! I was getting ready to say that.

Have they specified when they would deploy the network? Even if they did they would start in few markets and by the time there is enough coverage the Note 3 will be out

Nope they didn't specify anything with me just said the line "We'll have LTE in April" I'm going to the corperate office tomorrow or friday to get my micro sim and will ask them more about it then, if they know anything else. See if I need an lte micro sim or what and all that.

T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray discussed his company’s LTE rollout last month at CES. T-Mobile has said it plans to launch LTE for 100 million pops by mid-year, with 200 million covered by the end of 2013. Las Vegas is expected to be T-Mobile’s first LTE city. T-Mobile operates GSM on 1900 MHz (PCS) in the US and puts HSPA (and LTE) on the AWS band (1.7/2.1 GHz).

First you need to unlock it. Start here:

Keep in mind that you need to be on the 4.1.1 firmware in order for that unlock to work...

Well isnt that some useful info! Thanks for the unlock info I will be downgrading lol....Im with the guy above though did you have to flash a tmobile modem? Im running jedi rom for t889 on my i317 but was curious about flashing the modem and stuff.
What did you guys do to get tmobile 3g,4g and lte fully working on the i317? I have installed the jedi rom and all is working fine besides I have edge...So hopefully I can get a straight forward answer. My eyes are sore from reading.
And QPST is not working for me for QCN at all my phone is on com5 but when I go to get qcn says no phone connected....
Is this compatible with the T-Mobile LTE? They are much cheaper than the T-Mobile version and I know how to unlock the sim card slot also.

I have an ATT Note II running on TMobile. I had to go into a hidden menu to enable the correct radios for TMobiles networks. Seems to work fine with the stock ATT Rom.
However, I switched to Cyanogen, and my service was instantly broken. I'm still not sure exactly what caused this. I'll let you know if I figure anything more out.
I also bought an S4 before I got my note2 it was an ATT variant had to unlock it to use tmobile. Afterwards I had to enable AWS to get 4g even. Might be something to look into. Might be the hidden menu the person above me mentioned, Google enable aws on note2 att version or model number see what you get.
Any att note 2 on tmobile Service will prove to you in a short amount time that its a headache cause the same quality of 4g or Lte signal at any same given time or spot when compared to a actual t889 model is weaker then a t889.
Yes it works but trust me ive used 5 att notes...on tmobile ....the signal drops it goes 4g edge lte edge all the while with a t889 comparing them side by side at same time ...it just has a lot to do with how a tmobile t889 is fine tuned for there frequencys .
Even if u enable the aws bands on att Note 2 its still not as strong as using a carrier branded Note 2
Im sure some who read this will agree and know what I mean.
