[Q] Phone Not Charging; ROM Issue? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hello Friends:
I am on Jedi Mind Trick 6/21. I cleaned wiped the phone to reinstall 6/21.
My phone does not charge with most USB cables. For some, all it does is slow down the discharge. I can only charge with one cable I have.
I did not have this problem when I first started using JMT, and did not when I wiped and flash, so I suspect it is a software issue.
I took the phone to the store and they said the port is physically fine.
Thoughts?

Battery? Cables, obviously? The wall plug? Its not the rom I'm sure.

battery charging problem...
I too had that problem which may or may not be related. Nonetheless, I was not using jmt but with other roms and versions(4.2.2, 4.3, 4.1 2) and had the same issue.
To figure out what was going on I found an app from the play store to tell me how exactly how much mil volts I get from the charger cable dynamically(consistently).
I also double checked all settings that could drain battery from the device ie. gps nfc, etc..
During looking at the settings I found that nfc was on somehow! Other settings showed google services had the gps polling my location frequently causing drain. Lastly, while checking wifi advance settings found a setting that just kept the wifi checking for connection continually.
Unrelated but worth mentioning I switch Roms regularly with full wipes btw Roms which could be why the settings were funky...
I thought it was my battery going bad however; I had bought a OG battery a while ago so I popped that in and had same results ie. draining while charging. The charging app told me I was getting low mil volt from certain cords with the same battery-wort ranging from 900mlv to 40mlv.
What I think is going on is that:
1. the cord has to stay in the micro usb port
2. not all cords are made the same.
3. I think the micro usb port is A) has a loosen solder contact B) dirty connection in port C) 2yr old phone with a lot of use.
In Summary, I use the app to make sure the power supply is putting out..hehehe, ahem cough cough and that the cable is connected securely, cough cough... So a solution is to fix the port with reheating the mother board and soldering(risky) or sending it to get repaired(slightly less risky). I also, don't really want a new phone because I believe the T989 is a great device however, either a N5, or SGS4 would not totally unheard in this scenario. Sorry, for being so long-winded.
Sincerely, Jahman

Heh, I'm going to do a wipe and see if it charges on all of my chargers OK.
I've tested all of the same cables and chargers on another phone, and it charges just fine, so I know it's not the cable and charger

Nexus won't charge while the it's powered on

I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus and it won't charge while it's on,but when I turn it off it charges. Also It will charge while powered on when its connected to my VZW branded car charger. Anyone know why this is?
In settings>battery does it show charging(USB) or charging(AC)?

No I just get a list of what's using my battery life
Are you using the stock USB cable and charger?
Not all USB cables or chargers are made the same.
I bought one micro usb cable that looked high quality but didn't charge at all when in use and charged very slowly when not in use.

Wrong place, you need to check in: Settings > About Phone > Status
Might it be a faulty USB cable? Have you tried with a different cable/charger?

Yeah I've tried two different cables. Haven't tried the stock one since I don't have it.
Although not all cables can carry data, I thought any cable should be able to charge?

Try on a different computer, maybe your computers USB ports are malfunctioning or the GNex overloads them when the phone is on?
Not sure what the problem is. I've tried two dfferent computers usb ports several different outlets and two different cables. The only time it truly charges is when I have it hooked up to my car charger
I'm having a similar problem with the GSM version. I had the original Galaxy S and had to replace it because over time it completely stopped charging no matter what cable I used. Is this an issue with Samsung phones? Now My Galaxy Nexus seems to only charge with certain cables and some cables that it originally worked with no longer charge it. I've tested the cables with other devices and they seem to work. I'm wondering if I should begin the lengthy process of shipping it off to the UK for warranty service. Anyone have a link to a tutorial on how to flash everything back to stock and relock the bootloader?

So today my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) has started doing the same as the OP. I did not charge at all last night on the charger. I turned it off. Took it downstairs to another charger and plugged it in and noticed that it was charging. I figured it just needed a reboot. I turned it back on and left if on the second charger and it quit charging. Now I've moved to a third charger and the same thing is happening....no charge except while turned off.
I don't think I have done anything to harm the phone--the only thing I've ever done to it is swap the battery to the larger version. I'll try to switch the battery back to the OEM when I get home from work to see if that makes a difference. In the mean time, does anyone have any ideas on this? The phone is only ~6 months old, would I be wrong to say that the warranty would take care of this? Thanks.

My SGS2 did this as well. I had to tweak the USB connector on my phone. I bent it slightly toward the screen and all was well, never had to mess with it again.

This is true, the outer pins on a USB are for charging, positive and negative. The inner two are data in, data out. At the very least, a cable will always have positive and negative, so all cables will charge unless there's a break in either positive or negative or both. If there's a break in data in or out, it should still charge but it won't communicate with a PC or something like that.
The issue OP is talking about sounds rom or kernel related. Nandroid > Try something else. Hope for the best.
I've noticed that on 4.1 my USB charging worked fine. Now that I am on 4.1.1 it still charges over USB, but at a decreased rate. In other words, before 4.1.1 it easily charged over night and now it will only charge to about 80%. Does anyone have any ideas why that might be?

I just did the same thing, and it worked. Gnex was only charging when it was off, now, it's fine. I had to do the same thing to my old Fascinate for the same issue.
have you solved the problem?
Are you on stock or custom rom?

Having the exact same problem, won't charge with the original adapter as well as spare adapters, also wont charge through USB. Car charger is the only thing charging it right now.
Explain further?
Could you explain further what you mean by "bent slightly toward the screen?" are you talking on the phone or on the cord? If on the cord, then the whole metal connector? Or just something inside.

[Q] Is there a fix for the usb port charging issue ?

First thing, sorry if this has been answered before. The thread search never works from my phones. It just disappears as soon as my keyboard appears.
Is there a way to fix the USB /charging port to keep it from being so touchy? I've tried new factory data /charge cable. I've tried expensive brand name cables. They all seem to work for a more th or two pretty well and then its back to charge/not charge sometimes without even touching the phone.
This has been the way with every Samsung phone I've owned and it is so aggravating because, as I'm trying to type or while playing a game it interrupts and causes lags and also the battery will die while I think its charging if I can't see a battery icon.
Other than sending both my phones in for new USB jacks/ports, is there something I can do? I'm pretty capable at fixing electronics if not too technical.
seem to be having bad luck with your ports i would suggest a new charger but im sure you've done that a plentiful of times or you just have really bad luck with phones thats stuff get an iphone JK!!! lol you stick to samsung chargers not no after market stuff right ? and does the cable feel securely tighten or loose when you plug it ? is this phone old new you could have a dirty port spray some air can in that port to clear debris
Hey, thanks for your reply.
I think this problem stems from me being on the phones a lot and I have the the charging /data cable in a lot to keep the battery up. With that, the constant mmovement of up and down from table /desk top, to ear,or car seat /center console to my pocket as im in and out of my car.
The cable always feels loose in the jack. Im sure the jack is stretched open. The chip that is inside, may be has worn and the edges of the board slightly filed down making a loose connection .
Anyways, Ive already had to start charging the battery directly. I've also got a replacement ordered. That's why I pay for insurance right?
So we can put this thread to bed. Thanks
I have the same problem... I'm on my 3rd Galaxy s2...... Phone can be on charger at 15% let it charge for a few hours and when I go back to check on it, it says 10% battery.. I've bought several chargers and batteries... TMobile just keeps sending me the same phone out.. I just got another one on the 13th... What could be the cause of this... Also the phone shuts off while charging... So many dropped calls.. I give up on this phone... What can I do..

Same problem here. The best luck is (oddly) using a computer (instead of a wall charger) and charging while the phone is off. And, the original Samsung charger block and USB are the least reliable of all I have tried. The microUSB end of the cable is slightly undersized. Note: removing the battery completely (while not connected by cable) for 10sec seems to improve the charging.
It has been a good phone but 3 years might be all it can handle. Xperia Z3 compact, here I come.

Battery

My battery been charging really slow lately. My phone has never been dropped or has no water damage. Can someone give me an idea and if so will a factory reset help out?
iTz Amazed On Note2
I had A similar issue and it ended up being the USB cable that came with the phone. I switched to another one and it charges so much faster.

You can buy another battery... maybe the battery is the culprit happened to me... But i ended up buying an extended slim battery thats the same size as the stock one... It added to my battery life about an extra 4hrs... You can get it here http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3960mAh..._Cell_Phone_PDA_Batteries&hash=item337ee79e91 well worth the money
Me too
I just started having the same problem. I use to be able to use my phone while it charges and it would charge fairly quick as long as I wasn't heavly using it. Now even when I'm not doing anything on it, its charging ridiculously slow.
I thought it had something to do with my recent flashing of 4.3 but I flashed a MC2 restore and it didn't seem to matter.
Get the Galaxy Charging Current app. It will let you know the charging current. It should be *Now: 1698*. Mine would read 466 and I would reinsert cable(until I got a new charger/cable) until it read 1698. It appears there is a problem with OEM cable.

Been working great for ~3 months on my Sprint Note II. It said that when I downloaded the app too. Try the free version, I like it and bought the app for the dark background feature.
I would try another USB cable first. I was having the same issue. I tried a different cable I have around, and was charging like I was expecting. So, I order two premium USB cables from monoprice.
From the reading on XDA around here, it looks like the USB cable that came with phone get shorts in them fair easy; ie they're not very durable. For me, no biggie since I like to keep cables in various places--car, house, backpack, go to bag, etc.
It changing the cable didn't work, try a different charger. If that doesn't work, try the battery. If none of those work, then it's probably your USB port.
Although, the USB cable is most likely the issue.
If you've had the phone for awhile, try cleaning out the microUSB port on it. I used a toothpick and picked out a surprising amount of lint that had accumulated in there. It may help establish a better connection between the cable and the port.
Definitely seems to be an issue with the usb cable, I had the same issue, switched cable, and all is fine.

Thank you all for the info I will check up.on the extended slim battery. I feel that it might be my cable cause on the car charger it charges quick with no problem.

Taking longer than usual to charge the phone?

Something seems to be wrong with my charging port, lately its been charging at a slower rate and at times when I use my phone while charging, the percentage actually drops. I am using the standard OEM charger and also once in awhile it wouldn't charge and I would either have to fiddle with the plug or restart my phone. Anyone know what the issue is?

Some basic stuff, just to eliminate the usual suspects before going any further:
1. Have you tried another USB cable?
2. Have you tried another charger?
3. Have you tried another USB cable AND another charger?
Of course, it may indeed be a problem with the port on the phone. But in my experience, USB cable is the most typical reason for weird things going on with charging, as well as data transfer...

Yes, I've probably tried over 5 different usb cables and chargers from friends and around my house, still the same problem. I'm thinking it may be the port.
So far, in the past months or so, my phone started acting up with the charging, then my battery died and could not power up my phone unless charged, replace the battery, charging issue was still there and now recently charging slower plus my microphone is dead. I wonder if how hard would it be to replace to port. Trying to prolong this phone until Z4 is out.

Need Help About Charging My Phone

Hi everyone! My phone is having a problem. It was fine until today.
My phone charge EXTREMELY SLOW and decrease battery percentage sometimes. Then I used Battery Monitor Widget to check my phone and what I saw was terrible!!! The energy go into the phone was only <100 mA, while it was >200mA on my friend's Zenfone 4. Then I tested on a new battery, it still had that problem
And now, I'm wondering about this: Is my phone's charging port cause this problem???
I suppose that a bad port may be possible. How old are both batteries though? Even if you just got one, keep in mind many S3 batteries have been on the shelf for a long time. I've had 2 in the past that were bad even though they were brand new.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Try getting a 2amp charger. and a fast USB charger from ebay.
It is probably a bad port. I know the port on my phone is bad, i have to wiggle it to get it to start charging sometimes and sometimes I have to wiggle it to get it to charge faster. If it is the port, you can either try to solder a new one on, they are $5 on amazon, or pay someone to do it which can be very expensive. Or you could go with a wireless charging solution.
It's often not the port like many people think. I have several cables that will only charge if there is pressure on one side or you set it down with the cable being pulled a certain direction. Other cables work perfectly fine though. These micro USB cables go bad in this way all the time. So always be sure it's not the cable before trying to mess with the port itself.
