[Q] Root and Recovery using UnrEVOked - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I read somewhere that unrevoked doesnt work on 2.3.4
is that true?

i heard that too. there is a better more foolproof way to unlock and root the Dinc now that will keep root/s-off permanently. instructions are in this forum somewhere.

[Q] How to confirm nand unlock?

Is there an easy way to find out if I have unlocked nand?
I rooted from 2.2 using the method on the forum (downgrading to 2.1). This was the unrEVOked3 way of rooting. I read on the forum that unrEVOked3 is only a root, and does not unlock the nand?
If I haven't unlocked nand, can I use the Toast method to do so?
Thanks in advance.

You can use Unrevoked Forever or Toast pt 2 to do a NAND unlock. Doing it with Toast's method will downgrade your PRI, which may or may not affect you and can be hard to fix. I recommend Unrevoked Forever, but it's your choice.
You can go into the bootloader by turning off the phone, then holding power+volume down until you get to the white screen. If the first line ends in S-OFF, you have NAND unlocked.
Thanks for the reply! I did use unrevoked forever and also double checked in the bootloader. S-off!
There's a copy of the engineering bootloader Toast used that has the PRI downgrade removed, you may have to hunt for it though.

Or look in my sig.
ahah! That's the one, I've been meaning to download a copy of it myself so thanks for pointing that out.

[Q] Best non-unrevoked root method

Hope I don't get flamed here...
I've tried unrevoked method of rooting but I just end up with the "Backup CID is missing" after reboot.
(There is no solution I can find, and contacting them on twitter is not an option as I wouldn't be seen dead there.)
Can anybody recommend the next best method to root, after unrevoked?
Phone is a standard (non-branded) Froyo device.
Thanks.
Ferg.
Best is to roll back to 2.1 using this thread and then use unrEVOked 3.14...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Don't have a desire myself, but isn't universal androot an option?
Unrevoked is the main one, maybe you could go to their irc channel if Google has nothing...
PS. Moved to Q&A as not development.
Please do not post new threads in development to ask a question.
You can use S-off method.

No, that doesn't get root and actually requires to be rooted already.
I also think it's better to downgrade to Eclair and then either use unrevoked 3.14, or some other method such as Paul's (http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/)

[Q] Root, S-OFF, SuperCID after OTA Desire Z

Hi,
i'm newbie but first of course I read wiki, guides and others about rooting etc.
I've already applied OTA update on my Desire Z. My question is: am I able to root my device and get new non original ROM's and S-OFF? I can't find a straight answer here about it.
second answer is that i run bootloader on my device and choose "simlock" and push power button and somthing was done, then it prompt for restart which i made. What did I do?
Thanks,
Mat
I assume that 'simlock' option would re-do the network lock if you had used a code to unlock,.... I ASSUME.
Use that wiki you have already gone through to find out how to root etc with gfree. It's all in there. Looks pretty straight forward,.... not that I have had time to do it myself just yet.
As far as I know, it's currently impossible to root the new OTA. You'll have to downgrade to the pre-OTA to get root and you can find the guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Of course, my info might be outdated as I'm a G2 owner and not a DZ owner
EDIT: IT IS POSSIBLE!!!! Just ran across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886023

Appologies, as Omar said, Wiki is not up to date. Sorry for leading you up a blind ally. I might have a go at updating the wiki later if someone doesn't beat me to it, and if I can grow bigger balls.... don't want to be shouted at if I do something wrong!!
There's a guide on how to get temp root on 1.72 on the dev forum. You can turn that into perm root using the same commands as with the perm root part of rage.

[Q] What is the up to date perm root?

I've been reading this forum for a month or 2. I find it very helpful, thanks.
I'm looking into perm rooting my device, and all the tutorials are from November when the G2 came out. Is there a simpler way that is safer? I'm sure, after 4 months there are better methods. I just can't find them.
Thanks
There are only three ways: Visionary, Rage and Gfree.
The safest way is follow the XDA wiki, use Rage to temp root and Gfree to permroot.

Visionary doesn't use ADB but it also has a track record of perm boot looped phones, I rooted this way but would suggest the Wiki and Gfree to root.

This is what most are using for a perm root: Worked great for me.

joemm and I are both pointing you to the same place, and I can tell you that joemm is correct. I have seen more than one poster on these forums that have attempted to use Visionary to obtain permanent root and have run into a permanent boot loop instead.
Thanks, I'm checking out the wiki

[Q] HTC G2 2.3.4 Gingerbread S-Off, want to downgrade to 2.2 Possible?

I rooted my G2 awhile ago with a perma-root, and s-off. After that, I decided to sell it to get something better. I found only 1 good tutorial, and it showed you how to get back to stock. I did it, and it worked. It then updated to 2.3.4, S-Off is still S-Off. Long story short, I decided not to sell, and I want to reroot it. I know I have to downgrade for perma-root, but I read that if you try to downgrade 2.3.4 with S-Off, it becomes bricked. Someone please explain if I can just use the normal method, or is this more complicated than I think?
Thanks,
whatiznt.
Seeing as you have S-OFF, getting root is rather easy.
If you follow this guide, but do only the 'Gaining Temp Root' and 'Temp-Rooting to Backup' steps, you will have perm-root, and can then flash a recovery through ROM-Manager (or 4ext recovery app)
