Hope I don't get flamed here...
I've tried unrevoked method of rooting but I just end up with the "Backup CID is missing" after reboot.
(There is no solution I can find, and contacting them on twitter is not an option as I wouldn't be seen dead there.)
Can anybody recommend the next best method to root, after unrevoked?
Phone is a standard (non-branded) Froyo device.
Thanks.
Ferg.
Best is to roll back to 2.1 using this thread and then use unrEVOked 3.14...

Don't have a desire myself, but isn't universal androot an option?
Unrevoked is the main one, maybe you could go to their irc channel if Google has nothing...
PS. Moved to Q&A as not development.
Please do not post new threads in development to ask a question.
You can use S-off method.

No, that doesn't get root and actually requires to be rooted already.
I also think it's better to downgrade to Eclair and then either use unrevoked 3.14, or some other method such as Paul's (http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/)

The latest unrevoked can work with 0.93 now (it just wont allow loading of custom recoveries)
But their are quite a few threads already covering downgrading.
Why why why are you posting in the Dev section?
Read the effing rules and post it in Q&A.. even better, use the fkin search function.

sorry i posted in the wrong section, that was a mistake. but thanks for being a c()ck mate!
anyway, thanks to the one useful post, i cant seem to used unrevoked, i get an error stating the main version is older.
i need my phone rooted, Android 2.2- 0004 hardware- 3.70 Softy- 2.15.00.11.19 Baseband..... I will pay Via Paypal, I just needed rooted before I sell it! If any body can help Developers pls..... Remove this if it is pointless.
Thank you for your Time
Have they found a root method for 3.70 yet?
i dont know if they have yet...
Yes they have. Zikronix has a thread on how to do it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Will unrevoked work?
No it doesn't...the unrevoked dev team is working on one.
leenypost was refering to this thread:
[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Root! The Final Frontier Edition - Upd. 12.21.10
i think they have but im not the one that wants to do it, i cant cuz my other evo got rooted with Simple root so i didnt have to do it the long Way but i dont have that phone anymore. Any takers?
All you need to do is follow the link ICEReaction posted. It's very straightforward.
just downgrade using a stock RUU then use old root methods
im VERY noob wen it comes to cmd, shell cd to etc. and all that i guess the hard part is the Command prompt i can open but wen changing or anything i get path not found etc

This will not work. If your phone is new and came with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 it is a no go. If you have an older EVO you can flash a rom with a lower SW version and then use an RUU that matches that version if you like and then use unrevoked to root... But that's way more work to then get back up to 3.70 than just following the supplied thread.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Hi,
Verizon is pushing out OTA updates to install Android 2.3. I'd like to downgrade to Android 2.2, and prevent the OTA from happening in the future. Is there a way to do this?
Cheers
Only if u are s off already.

Sorry, but currently there isn't a way. (with the exception of the xtc clip).
Hopefully alpharevx/unrevoked will get temp root on GB and allow s-off.
No. But you can do some searches and find out.
Please read/search before posting. Thank you.

I, too, was unfortunate enough to receive the Gingerbread OTA update with no confirmation or anything. The funny thing is that I clicked cancel after it downloaded it, which did nothing. What's even more funny is that this is replacing a previous Droid Incredible 2 which already had S-OFF and CM7.
For anyone trying to downgrade to Froyo using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033922 -- it doesn't work, so forget about wasting your time.
i dont know if you've read this thread already http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990 but apparently it works, too bad im sorta new to this so i dunno how to do it myself xD if any1 is down to make a video or slide tutorial of how to follow these steps i am sure it would save the world for us inc2 unrooted users who want to root
it works, but its via adb only. Afterwards, using Revolutionary you can get s-off. The instructions are for downgrading to get s-off. Basically reverting back to .97 bootloader.

It does work, I used this method to downgrade today, i was able to gain s-off and flash cyanogenmod after. It isn't the easiest method for novices though. But the instructions are pretty clear. I had problems running the automated script included (i was in debian linux, so i cant speak for the windows script). However when I executed the commands in the script manually, everything worked . I would imagine that someone will package this method up nicely before too long...
Thanks
attn1 (for putting this all together in an understandable way)
Revolutionary - for everything they do
Ch4lky - zergRush
Scotty2 - misc_version
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

I've been searching to find a root for the Evo that I'll be getting in the next few weeks, yet the unrEVOked root seems frowned upon from what I have seen. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If the unrEVOked root is not the best, please point me to what is.
Thanks,
SmallFry

Different s-off methods for different hboot versions. Whatever works. Make sure u use smelkus' updated amonra recovery once u have s-off.
fitz420 is correct, depends on hboot. Gonna have to wait and see what you get. I recommend Revolutionary method, simple directions and a clean root.

Unrevoked is still the easiest way to root, basically the same though.
Hboot:
2.10 > unrevoked root
2.16 > revolutionary root
2.18 > HTC Dev root [most painful]
I imagine that the H-Boot is up to the latest since the guy that I'm purchasing the Evo from left it completely stock while he had it activated with Sprint... Thus, I think that I'll have to do the HTC Dev Root. I'll post back when I have the device in hand. Thanks guys!

I want to root my DHD. I had downloaded AAHK (zip file) few days back when the link was working and AAHK was not retired. Would I not be able to root and S-OFF my phone using AAHK now?

You can still S-OFF your phone.
After a while, the script might (if needed) try to download a PD98IMG file. When it gives an error simply google for the filename (might be PD98IMG-GB2 for example) and place it in the PD98IMG directory AAHK created. Everything should go well. I S-OFF'd my Desire yesterday.

Sorry KirovAir, but if the people you are advising to use the Hack Kit get stuck due to not following instructions or some other issue, will you support that? Because let me remember you that the Hack Kit is no longer supported nor here or in the IRC channel. Don't you think that what you are advising is dangerous and might leave quite a few fellas with their phones in a blank screen?

Sorry! I forgot to mention that using the Hack Kit is completely on your own risk and unsupported here! (and probably anywhere else..)

Thanks for the information!
I had also read about 'Easy Ace Root Tool' in dev forum. But I have a question regarding that.
- It says that only Custom ROMs can be installed, not Ported ROMs. What is meant by 'ported ROMs'? Will I not be able to install, say Sabsa prime or Venom's ROM(which are ported from One S and Desire X), if I unlock bootloader using Easy Ace root tool?
Also, does it support flashing 4ext recovery?
could you please tell me at least which version of aahk you used? already found in the web PD98IMG-GB2 and i am willing to do the proccess... already red many forums about rooting my desire hd. but since you did that proccess already i think you can give some reliable tips even if this topic is unsupported here. i know that discussing about aahk is unwelcome in the xda forum and i am sorry for this but i think you would agree that its the way with the most chances of success. or anyway could you suggest me any another way to follow?
thank you for yoour time

Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash any recovery that is for the device (DHD / Inspire 4G), Custom roms built from source (CM) and modified sense roms work great. Ported roms I am not sure, but you can try it out. In the worst case scenario, you might get stuck in the splash screen and you will have to flash a different one.

No, Hack Kit is no longer supported anywhere. If you are willing to do it, you are on your own and will have to find information about it somehwere else. There are other ways to root or S-OFF the device that are supported here. So, please let the Hack Kit rest in peace.

You don't need S-OFF to root. You can just run this and you will be just fine. You don't have to be a programmer to root your phone, just do a little reading and searching will suffice.
