I only have one complaint with my new Note 2, which is simply Samsung have not made the best use of the screen. I had foolishly hoped it would offer a more tablet-like experience, with more data on-screen in Apps, websites etc compared to smaller Android handsets with the same resolution.
Putting my Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and my Note 2 side-by-side with the same Apps, the Note 2 offers pretty much the same on-screen data as the Galaxy and noticeably less than the Nexus 7, despite all having the same resolution. I guess there is some sort of PPI/size calculation going on, or a distinct 'tablet mode', I'm not an expert in Android development I must admit so this might be obvious stuff.
I just wish I could put the Note 2 into a 'tablet' mode whereby it showed more data, rather than just offering larger icons that take up more relative space.
If somebody manages to crack this and finds a way, root or otherwise, to make better use of the screen, I'll be a happy man.
Does anybody else share this view? Or am I alone...
Other than this, it's hard to fault the Note 2
There were a number of ROMs for the original Note that had the option to enable Tablet mode; homescreen and all with the tablet versions of the apps. I'm sure ROM's will eventually pop up for the Note 2
Thanks... that reply manages to answer my question (tablet mode!) and give me something to look forward to, all at the same time!
The difference is the dpi. You will be able to lower it down once you root.

This is the drawback of the 16:9 aspect ratio. The original Note gave one more column's worth of icons due to its 16:10 aspect ratio.
It's the height that bothers me, rather than the width. I read a lot of news, use social media, messaging and email a lot, so it's all list based. The width is fine, but the height leaves a lot of white space in lists. You can always rotate if width is a problem, but with height you're a bit stuck.
I agree, I do wish I could have 5 columns of icons on the home screen instead of four.. there's so much space thats wasted!
I don't see why they couldn't have made it 5 columns since the TouchWiz app drawer has 5 columns.

Samsung's apps tend to be fairly hard coded to the stock resolution, but many many others work just fine.
Your mileage may vary. Lots of people were happily using the Note at DPIs of 280 and 240 or even lower.
Paranoid android was absolutely fantastic in that you could select certain DPIS for certain apps.
I'm going to miss it.
As it stands now, some apps are just better about allowing you to select font sizes and etc.
Readers and web browsers in particular.
In settings -> accessibility there is a 'change the font size' option. Does it allow you to set something smaller?
It had a very limited functionality in the Note 1 - I was hoping it was improved a bit for the Note 2.
- Frank
Just wait for ParanoidAndroid, and then you could choose tablet mod, or stay on phone mod and enable tablet mod only for selected apps
Changing the font size to small in accessibility works for me... no as good as my 6800 but I would trade the screen estate for pocketability

So I used the original Note for a long time and I am used to being able to just hit Menu then Edit on photos to crop or write on them. Am I missing something here or does the Note 2 just lack this ability? I used it quite a bit and I would love to know if there is a way to get it back. I thought I could get it from Samsung Apps, but I see that isn't an option on this phone either. I have tried ones from the Play store but none integrate the same functionality and ease of use.
Any one have any ideas?
View the photo your waiting to edit push your s pen button then tap and hold on screen it will take a screen shot of what your viewing and place it into edit mode for drawing.
A downside to the screen shot method though is that it doesn't save the picture in the sam high quality over what the picture was taken in on max settings with the phones camera.
On a side note I also went onto Samsung apps and was able to get the photo editor app to download, not sure why it wasn't letting you Oo

Sorry I don't have a direct answer for your question, but I do have a suggestion. I use PicSay(Pro) for all my editing and it's awesome! Of course I have not used others for comparison, as with PicSay I have not needed to look elsewhere. It is super-easy to use as well as share. I think it has a really nice selection of options. I'm not certain what the differences are between free vs paid version but I can tell you the paid is WELL worth it. I think I saw it on sale via Amazon not too long ago, you may be able to catch it again sometime for a cheaper price? If you are not looking for a seperate app then kindly disregard my suggestion.
Here it is:

Came from original Note. I'm 99% sure this is the one you want.
Hey everybody
One of the most useful mods I have performed on my Note 2 is a PPI adjustment, which effectively increases the resolution of the screen. I'm not sure why this isn't more commonly discussed, because I think it really takes advantage of the phone's size and tablet-like qualities (especially with the new MultiView update, if that appeals to you). I know many users of the original Note did this mod, which is how I found out about it. I suspect that many other Note 2 users may not be aware of this trick...
WHAT IT DOES
It has the same effect as increasing one's monitor resolution - more content is able to be displayed on screen. If all the icons, text, menus, etc on your Note 2 just seem really BIG to you, this is the antidote.
Look at the two before and after screenshots attached. I would have posted them in line, but as a new user I am prohibited from doing so.
REQUIREMENTS
ROOTED Note 2 - there are other Howto's on XDA that cover this
ROM Toolbox Pro (other apps may work too, possibly including the free version of ROM Toolbox, but this is what I used)
HOW TO DO IT
Root your phone and install ROM Toolbox Pro. Go to the performance tab, and click "build.prop" editor. There will be two entries called "ro.sf.lcd_density"
Within each one, change the property value and the default value to 240. That's four numbers you're replacing. On the last change, go ahead and reboot. Done!
OTHER NOTES
With the original Note, it was common for this mod to break the Market. This is no longer the case. But, there are a few things that break to varying degrees. They're easy to fix though...
TouchWiz: The default launcher will not adapt to the new settings, and you will have a lot of blank space. Fix by installing another launcher. I use Nova.
The Clock app breaks completely. I replaced with Alarm Clock Plus.
The dialer, like TouchWiz, will remain small. You could replace with a custom dialer, but I actually left it as-is because a side effect is that it's really easy to use with one hand.
The Camera app has the same problem. Camera Zoom FX makes a good replacement.
the Samsung keyboard breaks, thus taking down handwriting input with it. Swype works fine, as does s-note.
Aside from those minor issues, everything has worked fine, including all the 3rd party apps I have.
Hope this is helpful to some of you guys.
Seriously, this phone is amazing at 240

This is great. One other app is the email app only takes half the screen on portrait. Really need to figure out how to install the AOSP JB Email app on here....
Another benefit is Swiftkey Tablet keyboard now does the split keyboard on landscape which is easier to type on.
The only problem is that you can't use the handwriting mode with the stylus with the ppi set to 240 because the Samsung keyboard keeps fc'ing. That's my only complaint so far with this phone is that the handwriting mode is tied to the Samsung keyboard.

The market is probably filtering since at this resolution it is probably now considered an x-large device.
Really like this resolution, will need to use for a while to see which apps decide to crap out.
you can also edit the build.prop with root explorer. If you edit the it to be =160 it switched to tablet mode, but crashes a lot
=170 i think its still tablet and doesn't crash

To be honest, with jelly bean letting us choose "tiny" text now and the screen size being so big, I'm not as inclined to change the Res on this thing anymore... in the past with my S2 that was the first thing i would do whenever I flashed a new rom.

Technically the Galaxy Note II does have a higher screen res than the Galaxy S III since the Note 2 does not have a pentile display. Paranoid Android in the future will also let you completely customize the size of everything on your phone without messing up the market due to DPI issues.

anyone with issues sending MMS? I had taken a pic and tried to send MMS but got a unsupported file type or something like that and wont attach the picture. reverting back to 320dpi works.
hopefully the samsung keyboard will work with this in the future, it looks sooo much better with the dpi change .. specially with multi-view (although the menu and border of it doesnt stretch all the way across the screen).
bala gamer is hopefully going to take a shot at FIXING the bits that don't work right at 240dpi !! I especially hope he can fix the keyboard as I LOVE the keyboard.
for the multi window just drag the menu to the TOP OR BOTTOM edge and it displays correctly at 240dpi (the separator is not wide enough but thats not an issue)
Zoom FX is no good since it uses "smaller" images (really small) in burst mode NOT 8mp. I found that out the hard way after I shot some really nice shots and later discovered the res was so small it was useless to me
Is it possible without needing to install a ROM? What I basically want is the ability to have the dockbar move to the bottom of the screen when I rotate it to landscape instead of staying on the short side like it currently does. I want my dockbar always along the bottom edge of the screen no matter what position I'm holding the tablet. Currently no launchers that I know of allow this as an option. Any ideas that don't involve ROMs?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418867
This should do that until a new mods gets released .
You have to be rooted for this mod to work.
Hope that helps.

I don't think real tablet UI has a dock. And a launcher like apex would give you the option to disable the dock like in larger tablets.
if you want true tablet ui, buy an iPad mini
What exactly do you mean with real tablet UI - the failed UI experiment from google in the past?
The N7 has the current tablet UI.

The current N7 uses the phablet ui. He means the honeycomb like ui. Whether you consider it failed or not does not matter some (me included) prefer it.

I prefer that tablet ui too... would love some insight if tablet ui is possible at all in a CarbonRom.
I like the Honeycomb look better as well. My biggest issue is that all of the apps from the play store are downloaded as the phone version, not the tablet version. I bought a tablet to have tablet apps, not phone apps - I don't care that the screen is only 7".
Honeycomb ui works fine for a tablet all operations takes place below the screen. Unlike this new ui were you always have to reach the notification area
Most other android tablets ( like galaxy tab, acers and others) Have the tabletUI (honeycomb or whatever the hell you wanna call it)
Why? Because with the way you hold your tablet, its way easier to hit the buttons and swipe where you need to with that setup.
At least it would be nice to have the option to change it.
I use guest profiles and what not so i cannot use the method posted above
Hopefully we will get tablet UI on stock somehow working good....
hmm... the older I get, the lazier i get to mess with roms
I would install ParanoidAndroid if I were to flaSH....

Also a lot of wasted screen real estate on the N7 between the forced search bar and top & bottom bar.

Revieww apps on the play store, state your opinion.
When people don't buy apps that devs spent lots of effort on, its discouraging.

It's nothing to do with the devs. It's the way the play store sees the nexus 7. USA today has a tablet version of their app. Directv has a tablet version. On the galaxy tab 8.9 for instance, I could get those. Maybe it's something to do with build.prop?

You DO get tablet apps if you want. Changes in DPI determine app layout. PA lets you choose DPI on an app to app basis without trashing your market. Meaning modifications to build.prop are broad and make your market think you are a tablet which for some apps is bad, so they don't do that.

In most cases yes. However (for whatever reason) some companies/developers choose to publish two separate apps to the Play Store - one for phones and one for tablets, and unless your device is identified as a tablet the tablet version of the app is marked as incompatible (and the phone version doesn't include the tablet layout so it isn't available by dpi/layout changes).
Again, however, this is something that the app devs should be sorting - provide one apk that contains all layouts and the problem is solved (because then you can use PA or whatever to use whichever layout you like).

No, you aren't. If you were, the previous user would not be telling you that this is the wrong section. This is for the Tab Pro (No "S") with LCD screen, faux leather back (no dimples) no fingerprint reader. You can blame Samsung for the confusing naming convention (same name, aside from a single letter "S").
Each different device gets its own forum section. That isn't silly (although the way its divided may not always be the best). Flashing mods meant for another device can lead to a brick.
