I wanted something more... "official" looking but not static and not looping. There are only a few looping animations I like.
Based on a very smart suggestion from kevinrocksman, I made an extra version that's more optimized (cut the number of images in half and halfed the framerate).
Plus side: half the filesize. Slight downside: not as buttery smooth as my original incarnation, but still very good.
NOTE: Filesize is average. 3.91MB

https://www.dropbox.com/s/46yv2jcahoklmqd/gn2-progressbar_optimized_v2.zip
Original incarnation with boatload of frames. Use this if you don't care about filesize and want buttery goodness.
CAUTION: Filesize is pretty big. 7.82MB
Download Link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1c4s8ofc89x7mtb/gn2-progressbar2_optimized.zip
The "progress bar" starts at ~17 seconds (27% for me) since thats the amount of time it takes for the boot splash screen (the static SGN2 logo) to load.
After that, each frame denotes +1 px of the bar. There's a total of 462 frames. That equals 462 separate PNG's (this is the reason of the huge filesize). I have the framerate set to 10fps by default, since my note 2 takes about 1:30 to boot (i know, very slow, but I have over 300 apps installed and some other garbage) If you have a snappier boot up time, adjust the framerate to a higher number until the bar "progresses" at the desired rate. Like I said, this is a "progress bar", but you'll have to calculate the progress manually.
once you have is set, I guarantee you it'll be smoooooth as butter. It looks very nice and not too outlandish. I made it for myself, but figured I'd share it with the world.
EDIT: Added a new version. Half the frames, half the framerate, half the filesize,
Have fun.

Nice

I like this idea and will give 'er a try. I have a ridiculous amount of apps and scripts so this might give me something to stare at and ***** while rebooting lol!

..ok 1 quick question, why is it 400+ images?, u could cut that in half and it would still be smooth

true. but it'd only be half as smooth. Plus, it doesn't strain the system that much.
This is a good idea, however; and I am going to make it so.
UPDATE: I made one. It's not as smooth. Maybe because i've been staring at this thing for so long. I'll still upload it though. It does speed up boot-time by a couple of seconds.
Again, thanks for the suggestion.

The extra black acts as padding. If i get rid of it, the "Samsung Galaxy Note II" text wont align up with the boot splash.

You don't unzip them. You have to put them in a folder...just cant remember the exact location of the filder (need root explorer)
I use ROM Toolbox to do the heavy lifting for me. I point it to the downloaded file, and hit "install" it does the rest.
Found it: Put the zip in /system/media
sorry, I failed to mention, once you choose the version you want (they look the same, just filesize that's different), you copy it to
/system/media
then you rename your current bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.zip.old(or however you rename a backup)
Then rename the file you copied there (in this case gn2-progressbar2_optimized.zip) to bootanimation.zip

Yes for sure

Hmmmmm....I keep trying but it doesn’t seem to be working.
I have properly renamed the file and set permission.

I have a question I hope you can answer. I have a custom boot animation with sound. My issue is that I can sync the audio with the animation. The animaton will boot first then shortly after the sound chimes. is there a way I can change this or is that how the boot order is supposed to be?

Well alot has been added even since that screen shot. Idk when ill release the next beta because i am pondering if i should leave this app free, sell it, or make it donationware. But i expect to release at least 1 more beta b4 ive decided on the above. When i do release a new beta it will be in the apps sub forum as the app will be moving from the dev end to the finishing end.
Current to-do list.
Speed optimization
Gfx stuff make it prettier(also will help speed)
Add Splash Menu
Add high score saving and current game saving
add buttons to enable disable control features
add sound/music
and after that...dats it project finished(i "may" add support for vga phones...mayb...)

Will this give the option of viewing online (as well as offline) high score tables? That would make it more competetive and obviously more popular in return
One vote for freeware
Really lovely game - thanks!
It's lovely and works great. My only non positive comment would be that the numbers on the white background are a bit distracting.
Great Game, Thanks, almost finished.

Yep , also the released version is pretty outdate. Progress has been slow as of late tho, school & work are taking up almost all my time. But I am still working .
It's working well mate. I like tetris on a touch screen - never thought about that before.
It obviously needs tarting up, and a menu and stuff like that, but so far so good! Just keep going - you're definitely heading in the right direction.
Just one thing I would ask....
The numbers that come up at the side of the screen, I understand that you may want to see that for debugging or ask people about it if there are any issues, but could you just make it only show if there's a particular command-line parameter (say, "debug" for example)? It's very distracting.
The only issue I had with it was moving something from near the edge to the actual edge of the screen. It took a few goes and nearly ruined my game
sure i can do that very easilly.
when u say edge to actual edge is this on the same side? or from say leftside to the right side?
if its the same side keep in mind that the movement isnt based of pressing over the moving tiles. you can press anywhere o the screen and slide left/right to move.
elaborate more and i will go over the algarithm some more to see if i can fix it.
right now im sidetracked working on a splash menu, but one im done ill look into it

I get it now. I thought I had to click on the piece to move it, but it works a lot better if I don't. That makes sense - thanks mate
Take a look at the way Adam did his controls for the game Gemdrops (http://www.adamdawes.com/windowsmobile/winmob_gemdrops.html) - I think the controls would work well for your game as well.
(You can also stay full screen & just make hidden zones to click on)

Not hard at all.
Couple of questions:
1- will this work for super e? Wasn't sure if that was the right directory for that rom.
2- this is 21MB... willl this reduce the speed of my phone (less memory)?
Also... the pic makes this look amazing... enough to make me ask 2 possible dumb questions.

1. Yes it will work on Super E.
2. Shouldn't affect speed, but it will take up a lot of internal memory.
I would wait until I can get this down in size A LOT.
It's based of a 1920x1080 resolution so even sizing it down didn't reduce the size.
Can you upload to mediafire or xda itself? 4shared.com is making me wait 2 minutes just do download this bootanimation.
I'm glad I have a mytouch 3G. I don't have to really worry that much about system space.

Download a video I like, or create something original with photoshop, capture screenshots with SMPlayer, use photoshop batch automate to resize/rotate....etc.

Bootanimation Help

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. It is under 190 frames total, png images, all 480 x 800 but nothing plays. stays for a second and skips to being booted.
It is based off my favorite game, Shin Megami Tensei (it's the opening computer scene where the demon summoning program is first activated)
I just don't know where I went wrong on this.
Part 0 should play once, Part 1 should loop
could someone take a look at this and tell me what I did wrong?

Try this in the desc.txt
480 800 5
p 1 1 part0
p 0 1 part1
No change, sadly. There's gotta be something else I'm doing.
Wait are you saying that it plays a little bit of it then skips to the rest of your boot... or the screen goes black? Basically, what happens after what you want to see stops?
I noticed your FPS is set at 5, which is pretty slow. Maybe increase the 480 800 5 to 480 800 15 and see where it gets you, if you're only getting to part of your animation before the rest of the boot sequence (the part that doesn't have a boot animation) continues?
Hey guys, I rezipped it a different way that should work and changed the FPS to 30. I tested it on my phone and it worked fine. Nice boot by the way!
Let me know if it doesn't work.
@thegregbradley Actually all it would show is a black screen for a couple seconds, and then nothing.
@illinois08 Thanks, I'll try it out. Reflashing CM7 Nightly atm, so I'll have to get to it here in a few minutes. I'll edit my post with the results.
EDIT:
@illinois08 It works! Now I just have to tweak it so it actually gets to the final loading screen!
Well, once I finish and adapt it, I'll be able to upload it, the splash screen and begin work on the ADW theme to go with it. Thanks for your help!
Nice! I'd say just increase that FPS even more and see if you can get it to play all the way through before the boot finishes. I have no idea what the boot is from, but it looks way cool, considering running it myself

A bootanimation idea I've thought of before is sort of Leaving the HTC EVO 4G image and one second later it starts dissorting or burning down into a nice animation. Get me?
The white screen: when it finishes loading to start the boot anination, it should look as if the image IS part of the boot screen animation... It just breaks down violently and then starts to deform or rip appart to start the boot animation. So you won't have 2 seperate images at startup (Evo 4G screen + animation)
Make it one run-on animation....
By tthe way, that can be just the start.... No idea of the rest of the animation

Hi,
nice animation. but the background layer is not "full" black.
can you change this?
EDIT: another ROM and no problem with layer
got a good bootanimation idea if you'd like to make it
make the GNexus text larger and have the "X" symbol of Nexus pulse in the background like the N1's bootanimation.

What's the issue? Could you see the background? I can try to make it transparent but that won't be for a few days because I'd practically have to start from the beginning again, and I don't feel like it. I made a version that was full 720p images but the initial sequence ran much slower than it does now and looked pretty bad. You can download it From my rootzwiki thread if you'd like, but I don't recommend it.
I think it might look even better with the X rotating around the vertical axis.
I really like this boot animation. Nice and clean. I think it'd be cool to see a version that went vertically down the screen (yes, sideways) and was bigger. Thanks again!
Nice work. Thanks.

I'm running ARHD and the galaxy nexus has a bit of a grey bar around it rather than being the same black as the background
I tried using a different ROM but it still did it

good job anyway
maybe mine is an isolated incident?

I, too, see a lighter grey box (the dimensions of the boot images) when booting up. I pushed this boot image to my stock, non-rooted, LTE Galaxy Nexus.
Love it
I have tried about 10 different boot animations and I find this one the best. Simple and looks great. Thanks for the hard work.
Simply and clean, I like it. ;-)

UPDATE!
Thanks for all the great feedback.
It's taken me a while, but I've updated it with a larger logo and a much cleaner animation. Still needs a small tweak, but I'll get to it eventually.
The update is in the OP.
Thanks for this! It's not quite working perfectly for me though, so here's another data point to add.
I'm seeing a non-black background in a horizontal strip behind the text. In the latest version the gray background occurs when the text is initially being drawn from left to right. But once the text is drawn and the multicolor X starts to spin, the gray background disappears and all of the text is on a black background.
On the original animation with smaller text, the gray background appeared behind the text for the entirety of the animation. This newer one seems to be an improvement in that regard at least.
I'm running stock 4.0.2 unlocked and rooted on a VZW GN for reference.
Thanks for this animation: clean, elegant. Just right.
hey thank you for this bootanimation, however there is a minor issue i found... when it changes from "wipe" to "rotate" you see it jump. and why didn't you use a resolution of 1280x720 instead of 160x720?

Yeah i noticed that two. There are two different sequences, one unfolding the wording and the other with the rotating logo, and the text seems not to be perfectly aligned in both of them.

I've been using Slim ICS since 3.7 (now on 3.9), and I was very disappointed with the new boot animation on 3.9. Besides looking very choppy, I just didn't like it.
So, I went ahead and made a Slim ICS boot animation that i do like. It turned out to be very clean, superb definition on Slim logo, 1px progress bar at the bottom.
The sample, since it is larger than the actual phone screen, doesn't do justice to the bootscreen running on the phone. I was very surprised by the result myself.
THe progress bar is smooth on the sample, but on the phone, since it is booting, stops momentarily (just like a true progress bar, that gets stuck for a second while the phone is busy doing much needed stuff)
I like Slim ICS so much, I thought I'd give back to the community and post it here for all who want it.
[Thanks krarvind, for a great ROM. If by any chance you want to include this boot animation in any of your future Slim ICS ROMs, you have my permission.]
It is made for SGS @ 480x800, and I can only guarantee that it works on this phone. It might work on others, but I have no way of testing it. Consider yourself warned.

How to install:
Place bootanimation.zip in /data/local folder. That's it. Reboot and see.
Any comments?
Thanks I will try this B-)

@Jovenitto:
Nice work, can you bring the size down to my current levels? if yes, make one up and post it in my thread, i will look to put it in. As i said before, i would love users to get involved in this if they wish, my only req is BA should be simple and light ( < 100 kb preferred )
Thanks very much Jovenitto,
Nice and simple - just how I like it...

I was actually thinking of increasing the number of frames...
I'll try to get the size down.
Maybe by reducing the PNG quality and hope that it doesn't compromise overall image quality.
I could reduce the number of frames (there are exactly 100 frames), but the progress bar will be choppier... each frame "fills" the bar 4 pixels, i can reduce the frames to 50 if I increase the "fill" to 8px/frame.
Or maybe reduce the size of the progress bar. As of now, the bar is 400px wide, with 40px margin on each size. If the bar is smaller, it takes less frames to fill.
Tomorrow is a national holliday here in PT, i'll edit the BA and try to hit the 100KB mark.
EDIT: Small update:
PNG Compression already at max. 9KB each frame.
Reduced to 50frames (progress bar @ 8px/frame)
Result: bootanimation.zip @ 426KB
Maybe i'll be albe to get to 200KB by reducing the size of the bar to 200px or something...
Or change the progress bar completely. Maybe some Ubuntu style dots? Or some kind of glow effect (less frames needed)?
Cogs are turning in my head.

+1, not necessarily for the win8 circle but for a smaller type of animation, will save you a bucket load of frames
As per krarvind's request of size, here it is:
Keeping it simple, just the way I like it.
Try it and comment, plz.
FYI, I'll keep the previous one available (the one with long progress bar).
@krarvind:
10 frames only, 88KB total zipped size.
Just downloaded - works great and much nicer than the 3.9 animation (not that it upset me!). Thanks.
[BOOTANIMATION] [RED-MOD] Slim ICS for Galaxy S [480x800]
Thank you so very much for doing this boot animation. FYI, still works great in SlimICS 4.2. It's alot nicer then stock animation but still nice and light.
As I have an eternal hatred of the color blue and try to mod it out of every aspect of my phone, I've made a red version of your bootanimation and am uploading it to those who prefer it...
Enjoy!
