[Q] S-OFF with Ubuntu?

Can i get s-off with Ubuntu 10.04? I already have root now i need s-off.

You mean can you use a computer running ubuntu to s-off your phone? Not that im aware of, but it might be possible. What android version and hboot are you on?

Go to unrevoked.com and click unrevoked forever and follow the links to transfer the HBOOT flashable zip that will enable S-OFF. You also may have to downgrade your radio to do it. It can work in ubuntu. Wait what am I saying? The OS you're running doesn't matter as all you need to do is read the instructions on unrevoked.com and transfer the zip file as directed there.

Will that work with the new hboot though?

Guys im on aokp 4.0.4 and have hboot-1.02

Cant hurt to try unrevoked forever patch http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever, but you will need to downgrade the radio to a supported version. Not sure if an unlocked bootloader will let you flash a radio or not.

It should allow it. It allows fastboot when my .92 bootloader didn't. Not sure about if S-OFF will even work on 1.02. I always thought it was more open than S-OFF since it was released on the Inc.

You can easily unlock the bootloader the HTC dev way using Ubuntu. This will allow you to flash a custom recovery, and from there, custom ROM's, stuff like that. To get true s-off, though, the easy way is to use Unrevoked Forever, and that requires a Windows machine (and it won't work in Virtualbox either, at least it didn't for me). I think there are other (older) guides for getting s-off that use adb, and those methods would work just fine in Ubuntu. I found it easier to boot into Windows.
Edit: I'm not sure if you can get s-off after you're on the 1.02 bootloader.

His bootloader already is unlocked.
Unrevoked requires a pc, unrevoked forever does not.
I have never heard of using adb to get s-off, other than using it to downgrade to froyo to use unrevoked to get root and s-off. Speaking of, you could downgrade to froyo and then use unrevoked to get root and s-off. Check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258, you would want to start at step 28, as i assume you have already done 1 - 27, htcdev unlock bootloader, fastboot flash cwm, flash su thru recovery, and install busybox. You will need adb and fastboot setup on your pc to downgrade.

At the top of the bootloader screen it says Locked (oow). Even though i already unlocked my bootloader.

Do you still have the unlock_code.bin file htc gave you when you unlocked it? May still be on your computet in the same folder where fastboot.exe is. If so fastboot flash it back to the phone ( fastboot flash unlocktoken unlock_code.bin )

Actually i do! I found the email they sent it in. But my computer wont even notice my phone while in fastboot

Try calling the fastboot binary with sudo. I had that problem on Mint but only for the Inc not the Nexus and using sudo for fastboot solved it.

Pretty sure you're going to need s-off for the kernels and radios. Everything else should be fine.
If you've got a custom recovery installed, though, you should be able to s-off with Unrevoked forever by just flashing an update.zip. Unless there's an issue with the newer firmware that I'm unaware of.

Do you have cwm recovery, superuser, and busybox installed?
Im not sure what all you can flash thru hboot with an unlocked bootloader. But you can flash roms mods and kernels thru cwm recovery.
If you can flash radios thru hboot, downgrade to a unrevoked supported radio, and then try flashing the unrevoked forever zip thru cwm recovery and see if it gives you s-off.

Yes you should be able to flash kernels thru cwm recovery just like you would a rom or a mod.

[Q] Wiped phone through clockwork with s-on, cant restore

I made a mistake rooting a friends droid incredible and left s-on, I have clockwork but it cant flash anything, I presume its because of the s-on. I wiped the phone without a backup to install miui, so I now have a droid incredible that can only get into hboot, clockwork, and fastboot. It also will not install 31img.zips, Yes ive renamed them correctly I just call them 31's. Help please?

You need to flash an RUU in the form of PB31IMG.zip. It needs to be named PB31IMG.zip and on the root of a FAT32 formatted sdcard. If you use the froyo RUU on pvillecomp.com you can use unrevoked to root again though your friend will just want it working.

My HBOOT wont give me the option to flash, it finds it and checks it, but wont let me install. im downloading the froyo ruu right now in hopes that it will connect through fastboot and do it.

What is your hboot version?

Have you used the htc dev site to unkock the bootloader? If not you need to do that, then fastboot flash cwm recovery, then flash superuser thru cwm recovery.

I would try flashing unrevoked forever before doing anything else. Logically this would get you s-off and allow you to flash a ROM. I wouldn't run straight to unlocking your bootloader because it is a lot harder to reverse that than it is to reverse the effects of unrevoked forever. (in the long run, that is. right now there would be no reason to reverse either)

actually bootloader is easy to lock. I think it's fastboot oem lock. You can unlock it again using the same token you used to unlock before that you should save if you decide to do that. Unrevoked forever only works on certain radio versions. With an unlocked bootloader you should be able to flash any PB31IMG.zip as well as flash with fastboot. With S-OFF I know you can flash custom PB31IMG.zip and also older RUUs.

Yes, but doesn't it then say 're-locked bootloader' or something to that effect where verizon or whoever else could tell that it has been unlocked before and therefore void any warranty? Whereas the s-off tool can be reversed using the s-on tool and nobody has to know anything was ever there. I don't have any experience in that department, I'm just speculating based on things that I have read.

Maybe, but I think when you submit for an unlock token is when HTC knows you unlocked your bootloader.

I have unlocked the bootloader and flashed the stock recovery. where can I go from here? can anyone provide an update.zip? all the links seem to be down for the froyo one

That is probably true, I never thought of that. I guess they probably think that I have an unlocked bootloader now too since I made an account and downloaded the tool to help a friend with his phone.

additionally, why did you flash stock recovery vs. CWM? I don't have any experience with stock but CWM seems to be perfect for anything I've ever needed a recovery for. ie - flashing new ROMs or backing up/ restoring ROMs

Do steps 6 - 27 of this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258 to install cwm recovery and get root. If you want true s-off continue to follow steps 28 - 43.

I can confirm that using the below attached stock signed recovery will allow S-off stock rooted users to take the update and still be able to flash custom recovery/root with no problems. Thank Zarboz for the recovery

It did not relock me. I would say you can probably do the same thing. S-off wasn't a factor in this one.

Yes. Stock (vzw) cid and that modified mid remember I discovered that
In a nutshell, this ota only cared about stock recovery. Update installed exactly like it should, firmware and all.

If you're talking about Sonic's method, it's not a root exploit. It's an actual HTC support tool. Nothing released is going to break HTC's support tools.

Yup, got that. I wasn't being clear. I meant that if this doesn't break the existing root exploit, I wanted to simply go ahead and let it update (and thereby get rid of the intermittent pop-ups) before sending it off to Sonic for his S-OFF. I don't want to be in the situation where the phone is S-OFF'ed, but I am unable to stay rooted because this OTA has patched the known root exploit.

My apologies. With S-OFF you are able to flash a custom recovery, which will then allow you to flash a custom ROM that will have root baked in. If you like the Sense UI, Andybones has a fantastic ROM option in BoneStock which will give you the best of both worlds. Rooted and Stock Sense experience. So you shouldn't worry about the OTA if you plan on getting S-OFF.. because you can run a ROM that will offer you root access.

Unless I'm mistaken, if you are S-OFF there is no "exploit" needed for root access. S-OFF means you can simply flash SU and you have root - it doesn't require any exploits as S-OFF gives you complete read/write privileges to the entire system.

I flashed it and tried the update but it still failed ... I am thinking it is probably because I de-bloated the stock image and it doesnt like that.

No apologies needed at all. I appreciate the informed reply! And you cleared up a misconception I still retained. I've heard Andy's ROM is a perfect debloat and tweak up of the stock experience. I *cannot* wait to have the ability to kill and app by long-holding the back button. That is something I've grown so used to that, I feel majorly inconvenienced without it.

you are not mistaken. correct all around, once S-OFF, your "Security" is now Off.. "S-Off"
anyway, this means you can just fastboot a custom recovery and flash a custom ROM that already has root built into it.

To verify... the process is this:
Prerequisite: Have all HTC drivers installed with abd, etc. All that android stuff... same stuff to flash custom recovery in the first place, etc.
1. Boot into bootloader. Choose Fastboot.
2. Plug your phone into your computer with the microUSB cable.
3. In your android directory command line.. you're going to type: fastboot flash recovery htconerecovery_signed.img
4. Then you're going to type fastboot erase cache
Now you're going to choose to reboot your device... you're going to take the OTA...
Then you're going to go through a similar process to flash the custom recovery back to the device?
Does that sound about right?

we can just make a ROM out of the update files, have someone make a stock nandroid or something.
or for the firmware, radio, if they were updated

ive done alot of phones with the xtc clip,and the diag files definately can be hboot specific. in this case,the ota is minor so hboot prolly doesnt change. while the java card is not broken,it may require new diag files to do newer hboots as OTAs happen.
its prolly not that big a deal,as sonics supplier should be able to get him the new diag files. but as was said,there isnt much any advantage to waiting.

just curious if there is anything good in the update. Don't care about Isis, phone hasn't froze up. But I do get drops of wifi and BT. Didn't see anything in there about that.
I'm running a self debloated version of the stock, rooted, deodexed ROM. Think I'll run this way until the 4.3 drops and then repeat... Any "fixes" from this minor update should be in it.

Not quite sure how to flash custom roms on this phone ...

While there are plenty of guides describing how to root and flash recovery + a custom rom none of them seem to state how to without htcdev since we're now locked out of it. I would prefer root but mostly just want a rom other than stock. Did some searching and couldn't find anything I could be sure was current. Any help would mean a lot, thank you.

You can't install another ROM until you do have root access. Search in the various Verizon HTC One Subforums for "rumrunner".

Oh, I saw that but I thought that was for something else. So that is the safest method for root these days? Weird needing root to flash a ROM when usually you just need a recovery..

Rumrunner if you are on the pre-4.3 software. Otherwise you will have to wait for rumrunner to be updated. Rumrunner does both s-off and root in one shot.

It's not about root. To flash custom roms you need an unlocked boot loader. Since HTCDev is not an option for the Verizon HTC One, you need to use Rumrunner. Rumrunner gives you S-off and unlocks your bootloader. Once your bootloader is unlocked, you can flash a custom recovery and you are set to start flashing custom roms, rooted or not rooted.

Not quite. Rumrunner just does the S-OFF & Root portion. I remember quite distinctly thinking Rumrunner would do everything, but after Rumrunner I still couldn't fastboot flash a custom recovery.
I had to change my CID to the SuperCID, then grab an unlock token from HTCDev so I could unlock the bootloader before I could use fastboot to push in a custom recovery. Pretty tedious, but not difficult and now I'm fully unlocked everywhere.
The important thing to remember is that we sort of operate backwards from most HTC devices. Most people just get to do an HTCDev unlock and then an S-OFF exploit afterwards is optional. S-OFF lifts the restriction on super-important places like the radio on bootloader. A bootloader unlock will let you mess with /system, recovery, and sometimes the kernel.

I used rumrunner and did not have to use HTCDev unlock token or change CID in order to unlock bootloader to fastboot flash custom recovery. Rumrunner unlocks the bootloader for you, so no need for HTCDev. Did your rumrunner process complete successfully without any hitches?

I have used Rumrunner on 5 different VZW HTC One phones. Once complete, you just need to flash the recovery of your choice. Nothing else is needed.
Rumrunner is an amazing tool but can be kind of finicky to finally get S-off. Just make sure you follow the directions EXACTLY and if you have Windows 8.1, good luck. I suggest using a Windows 7 machine or Ubuntu using Live USB if you don't have a native Ubuntu machine. VMware is NOT supported for Rumrunner.

"version 2.0 does work, have HTC One m7 running 4.4.2 sense 6. ran Sunshine on device it rebooted twice to complete. Then flashed TWRP recovery v 2.7.1.1. Then entered TWRP recovery it automatically prompted me to install supersu for root. Very easy and IMO was worth $25. Now I can finally try out a custom rom."
It is a paid aap though. Costs $25 as of now. You are not charged if you dont get S-OFF, or if charged you will be refunded, if the S-OFF does not happen for you.

SunShine does not root the phone though!
The instructions specifically say that you must be rooted in order for SunShine to work. How am I able to unlock and s-off if i'm not rooted?

It still works. I was in your situation yesterday, and it worked for me. When you start the app it will give you the option of "temp rooting" it if you're not already rooted. Honestly, the process was incredibly easy.

So does this mean you can flash roms now? Like cyanogenmod?

s-off and Root
Nope, you don't any longer need to be rooted to used Sunshine.
One of its steps is Temp Root. Then it does its magic. Well worth $25 cuz there is no other way.
Google search for 'Sunshine s-off' and see the newest front page with newest instructions and download.
And yes, you can use any compatible custom rom you'd like!

Sure Can. I did mine a couple days ago and have tried about 6 roms so far, think gonna settle on the AOKP kk4.4.4 I'm really liking it.

Okay sweet im rooted! But how'd you guys get twrp installed and working? I installed twrp through fastboot on my computer but when I boot into twrp on my Verizon m7 and flash cm11, it fails.

What is the full name of the file from which you installed TWRP?

I just Googled verizon m7 twrp and followed these instructions on this site.

I downloaded the 2.7 .IMG and still gives me a fail.

The full name of the .img is "openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.1-m7.img"

Yo, If your phone is Verizon, you can only use: openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.1-m7wlv.img.
Plain M7 recovery from the TWRP site isn't OK.

You're on your way now......
When you wipe before installing your custom rom, you can do the factory reset wipe,
and in Advanced Wipe, you can do Dalvik Cache, Cache, Data, and System.
But don't wipe internal storage, or you'll lose everything on the internal sdCard including
the rom you want to flash.
