[Q] Nexus Screen and large PDF files - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I just my current tablet the tf700 to bring my rpg books with me and I am looking for something smaller. I wanted to know how well the screen is with large pdf files, can it scale them to fit on the screen?

Of course it can - only question is whether you can read them...

So this is just one of those things where I need to test it for myself then.

It will be really small, I tell you.

If you find a sample text. I can load it on mine and post a screenshot.

*rolling eyes* A screenshot is completely useless, man!
Of course it will be sharp, because the screen has the exact same resolution as the TF700. But the problem will be whether it's still legible without strain, because the screen is so small!

display in sunlight

been searching posts for hours, have'nt yet seen this subject/problem covered. with the dark backgrounds on most of these roms, it makes it very hard if not impossible to view info on the screen outside in sunlight. i've used homescreen rebuilder to make my own w/white background and it's very good in the sun but it switches to a different homescreen. i know you can tweak some colors but any other options out there ?
S620 using ROM 3VO.2.90.092509. really love this one, very nice.
what is homescreen rebuilder?
Hi
I too have wondered about the display on my S620 while in sunlight. I was wondering if there was anything that could be done to make it easier to read the screen while outside. You mentioned homescreen rebuilder. What is that and how do I get it? I have been looking for something to make it easier to read the display while in direct sunlight. Thanks!
hey ramfan43, all the posts i've read here can't find anyone with the same gripe. google "madbeetle", click on 1st result_ madbeetle.com. it's called Homescreen Builder. actually found it on a freeware site. it's a bit limited but you have to check for yourself. i designed just a couple w/white backgrounds and really improved viewing outdoors. just switch back and forth. i literally can't see the screen to make a call. hopefully a better solution out there. can't be just me.
I am having the same issue. I can't see the screen in sunlight and I need to go in shadow to do anything.

Wow! LMAO Stylez...
Anyways, why is this such an issue. Wasn't it 'resolved' earlier on by mentioning to make the background brighter? Besides that, there is not much to do...the screen was not designed for the sunlight, it was designed to illuminate/create an image as much as possible, and it does that...any reflection, sunlight, or fading issues in the screen are just hardware (as far as this thread is concerned).
I say that the only permanent solution that is both cheap and easy is Stylez haha, if it bothers you that much, cover it with your hand...
OR
Just don't use it when you are outside! Being outside is when you should be one with nature, not separated both socially and physically from the real world by the means of an electronic device....
Those are my 2 (or more) cents.
Guess I threw one you guys can't solve. i've done the "cover the screen with your hand thing" it does'nt help much. thought the idea of a cell phone was so you "could" use it outside. i learn fast and when i figure out how to make my own ROM or tweak someone elses, i'll do it myself. i don't know enough yet but seems to me all that needs to be done is design with lighter backgrounds or the ability to switch the homescreen colors. anyone tell how to tweak the color on 3VO EXCA 6.5 ? very, very nice ROM.

All of what you want to do with regards colours is simps, change wallpaper in settings, if using 6.5 make taskbar same colour also mentioned in a thread, if using standard taskbar then basehue changes colour.
With regards cooking own ROM goodluck
I use the opposite dark homescreens and can still use phone in sunlight via the diy hand
Thank god for OLED becoming the better choice nowadays.

Non-Pentile LCD?

we'll.. that's the only thing that bugs me..
i can live with a locked bootloader,
i can keep suffering from the wifi disconnections
but that pentile matrix is really stupid. (why was it invented in first place.. argh!!~)
does anyone know about a 4" lcd i can get that will fit (size & connectivity) into the atrix with the same resolution (960x540) but NON PENTILE?
thanks!

EDIT: It's also worth pointing out that it's not the pentile aspect of the LCD that you should be complaining about. AMOLED screens are pentile too. Every time I see a galaxy s owner whine about the Atrix screen being "pentile" I want to punch them in the throat.
Yeah, the problem is actually the normal saturation of the colors, while the samoled has very saturated colors.

pretty much any phone that's not ours, or the galaxy-S gen of SAMOLED.
The screen is alright compared to the matrix that the galaxy s is using.. our screen is much brighter and battery efficient..
but what if there was a replacement screen which is full RGB stripe, wouldn't you take it?
I know i would... full rgb will make gradients smoother...
p.s.
I'm not hating the amoled but lets face it.. its over saturated.. natural colors on lcd looks way better to me.

of course most of us would take a full-stripe screen but they don't and never will exist for our phone.
not necessarily..
Apple made a "Retina Display" with a smaller screen size, means.. higher pixel density.
so we know the technology exists, maybe a full rgb screen will be available in the future..

Probably. On a different phone.
The display drivers are written to drive the current LCD in the device. The display hardware is built around it, it's not as simple as just getting a new LCD. Not to mention the fact the digitizer is generally integrated into the displays as well.
i haven't thought about it Ririal, you're probably right.
so.. it wasn't enough they locked the bootloader
they had to make everything else so complicated so no one will mess with it.. damn..
Lol, I think it's intrinsically complicated, not Motorola's doing.... This is a dual core phone, not an abacus....

Uhh, I've never seen any pda/phone that you could put a different display in. It's not Motorola, that's just how these things work.
Is the pentile matrix really such a big deal? I mean, I notice it, and I'd prefer not to have it, but it's not going to make me switch phones.

No, it's not a big deal. Anyone who whines about it is just looking for something to complain about. They're the type of people who ask restaurants to turn the AC up in the summertime.

Fitment isn't the issue. You can't just replace the display, the entire device is built around the hardware. You'd have to build a new display SPECIFICALLY for the Atrix, from scratch.
i know what u mean, cable arrangements.. etc..
well, if it'll be working, ill figure out the rest
so ill be in touch with Moto China soon and we'll see if its not a pentile one.
and its not a big deal, and i'm not whining about it.. i'm just trying to find a better screen and hoping to find one.

it's not just cable arrangements. it's hardware. a pentile matrix is run by a different LCD driver than a standard LCD. that driver is most likely soldered straight into the phoneboard or baked into the processor. at that, the connectors for the two types of screens are probably different as well.
honestly you're going to get nothing but disappointment and frustration. these are not honda civics, you can't plug-and-play between phones willy nilly. i'm an MSEE and i would love a non-pentile LCD as much as you, but it's in all likelihood impossible.
you're absolutely right..
i just finished a phone call with a costumer service representative from Motorola China..
she didn't understood any of what i've asked on the regarding the display on the Moto XT882..
because she barely understand English and i've tried my best to make it easier & simpler for her
and yet, it didn't work.. she was very patient and nice but still.. it was a total waste of 25 minutes.
and although it was a total fail.. i think it was worth trying

Galaxy Nexus Camera Viewer

I got this phone last week and love it.
Anyway, I noticed that when I go to camera viewer in the dark or view a black image I get a gradient white to transparent line from the top of the screen all the way across. Is it normal or Am I the only one who has this problem?
See the attachment, so you can see the problem what I am talking about. See the mark on those pics.
Should I return it??
Thanks!
Yes, I get exactly the same thing. Only noticeable when the image at that end of the screen is completely dark.
It doesn't show in the actual photo.
I wouldn't return it as it doesn't affect the result and it seems to be only one pixel wide.

I am glad to know that I am not only one here. However, I like to know how many people here have this 'not-really-problem'.
Anyone, does your nexus have a similar issue to mine? If so, please post here (just say "yeah, I have that, no big deal" or whatever)
Mine has it as well, and it appears to me to be the same color gray as the background for the camera UI, and this is just the edge of the "view finder," I am guessing that the coder for the camera miscalculated where the screen edge would be...
Bump

Awesome Resolution = tiny everything!

So I of course love the 720p HD resolution on my SGN, however it drives me NUTS how many things appear to be extremely small- text in many apps, certain buttons in certain apps (e.g. the top navigation button in official Twitter app), notifications in top of the tray, etc.
I know you can adjust the size of system font but it doesn't impact all apps and doesn't impact notification tray icons, app UI elements, etc.
Does this bother anyone else? Has anyone tinkered with adjusting density via an app or build.prop? Any feedback? My concern is that doing this often causes negative impacts in certain UI elements...
Things aren't small enough at all. I couldn't disagree more. Seems like the high res is almost a waste.

Hmm interesting.... maybe it's because I'm coming from SGS2 in which everything was much larger due to the lower resolution being scaled/stretched up to fit the massive 4.52" screen. I know it leads to poorer rendering and pixelation, but was never really that noticeable (until placed side by side with my SGN).
Would still love any feedback if anyone has toyed with density...
You have to also take into account many apps aren't created for ICS. I feel some display elements may have changed from GB to ICS for phones
I think you're right in that you are just use to seeing a small resolution on a big screen and aren't use to the HD display.
Accessibility -> Large Text is always an option for those aging owners
lol...i wonder what the op would say to the fact that i use 240 dpi instead of the stock 320. my launcher is 6x6 w/search and my app drawer is 7x6. i find the stock 320 very big and a complete waste of the resolution.
ps-reduce google books font size to the minimum, you would be surprised at how tiny it gets, even more surprised at the fact that it is still crystal clear to your eye. the resolution is truly amazing!!

I agree completely. There was actually a comparison on Android Police and the galaxy nexus showed less on screen than the atrix, despite it being higher resolution and a larger screen. Everything is way too big on the nexus and it's a huge waste of screen space.

Try using 240dpi like myself instead of 320dpi .

[Q]How bright are your touch keys?

Are they bright or dim? I remember my first Note 3 had brighter touch keys than the one I'm currently using. This kind of bothers me but I don't want to make any decisions just yet because the Note 3's are very inconsistent and I don't want another with more problems and find out all Note 3 have dim buttons. :silly:
Edit: Pictures added. This 5mp camera on my LG-v909 does no justice haha but as you can see its very low. The touch keys are brighter in the photos but IRL they look very dark and washed out.

Looks pretty much normal to me. I'm no lighting expert, but looks the same as mine giving it's pics and not side by side.
Not sure how you would be able to rate this without having two phones side by side to know for sure unless it was a drastic difference.
I can't see anything wrong with the images you posted, look normal to me.
It looks normal to me to. I sort of feel like other Galaxy devices were brighter. The note looks good either way though.
Also, if they were brighter they would probably be more annoying/noticeable. I think I remember looking down at them on the Note II a lot more.
The white is really bright, the black is dimmer. Its the same on all of them in my experience.

I tend to agree with this. My GSII was black, and they weren't that bright, but my Note 3 is white, and they are so bright it makes the screen look dim when they are on even with the screen brightness at 50%. Forget at night. They blind me! LOL
I disabled them on my white Note 3 as they shine bright and bleed quite a bit.

Yeah, they do bleed.
I just started a thread about the issue I'm having with mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50144333
I might just turn the lights off, very bright. Should be an option to dim them.
My black Note3 is just fine. My old white SGS3, though, bled a bit in pitch black darkness, but it didn't really care because it was so subtle and not worth complaining about (SOME people actually returned their phones over it *hah*).
Anyway, I really wish the Note4 would ditch capacitive buttons, then how bright they are is a non-issue. I want my next phablet to have onscreen nav buttons, like the direction LG and Moto are going.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but why not get the phone that has the features you want like above mentioned LG or Moto? I want hardware buttons so I have full use of the screen and that's part of the reason I picked Note 3 over other phablets and unless there is no bezel at all, I would be disappointed if part of the screen was wasted for things that could be off screen. If LG and Moto are trying to save few cents on hardware buttons, among other things, that's fine, but that's part of the reason I won't buy them.
Going back to the topic, as far as I can tell from the pictures it looks fine, similar in brightness to the screen icons, probably that's how I would want them, but honestly isn't it a little nit picking? I would never return the phone for such a minor thing since by now I don't even look at it no more, I know by heart where it is and yep there is a chance new phone could have some other problems, like crooked button for example. I'm sure there is a setting where it could be adjusted, especially if it's true that black Note 3 has lower setting than white, but not in user accessible menu.
Maybe developers could figure it out?

Because Samsung still features a removable battery and microSDXC slot. That's really the main reason I've stuck with 'em.
(And software nav buttons really take up almost no space (and even less when configurable in the ROM); zero in immersive mode. I'd rather have the phone physically shrink w/o h/w buttons.)

You say almost no space but in reality it takes up .2" of screen. So a Moto X goes from 4.7" to 4.5". A Note 3 would go from 5.7" to 5.5" which is the same as the Note 2, effectively erasing the size difference between the 2 phones.
I personally don't want on screen nav buttons. If I'm buying a 5.7" screen I want to use 5.7". I understand some people may have other preferences, but the screen is the #1 feature of a phone, you look at and touch it 100% of the time.
I don't even know how on screen system buttons work, since I never had one, but if they permanently cut off 0.2 inch off screen , NO WAY. This would mess up everything: all the 16:9 1080p movies are then 1020p with border all around or are they no longer proper 16:9 ratio? Is the edge of the movie just cut off, or is every single frame rescaled to fit smaller area? And why would I ever want to have this, to admire huge empty bezel? Or to have more fingerprints and smudges on my screen
And yes exactly, all those companies cut out SD card slot, removable battery and hardware buttons most likely to save few pennies. So Samsung has my money.
I turn soft key lights OFF!
I cannot possibly forget that menu is one side and back is on the other. The fact that I'm reading about this "bleeding" being an issue is manna from Heaven. I don't understand why anybody would keep them on! Not to mention night use.

No the Nav Buttons disappear when playing a movie. But when using the phone they are there so they become intrusive in my opinion.
