[Q][SOLVED][Slim Bean Stable1] SMS problem, no split messaging - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

OK so i have the Sprint version, S G Nexus with Slim Bean, stable version toroplus.4.3.build.1-OFFICIAL-901
I'm having an issue with the themed MMS.apk
I just rooted this phone for the first time, i know what I'm doing btw.
When after reaching the limit to split, it won't split. It just stops typing. The counter above the send arrow just stays at 0(zero) I have to send it and continue my message.
QUESTION: Is there a quick fix for this?
I haven't re-installed the ROM, I will shortly.
I appreciate any help, its not a big issue but if it can work, that would be awesome. Thanks

INSTRUCTIONS ON SOLVED ISSUE
----------------------
Ok os what i did was backup my current Slim Bean ROM, then i flashed CM 10.1.3 (4.2.2) stable, went into /system/apps/mms.apk, copied it. I restored my backup, deleted the old mms.apk from /system/apps i copied and pasted the new one, i didnt install it or anything, just copy and paste. went into recovery to wipe cache and Dalvik cavhe. rebooted, SUCCESS.
Now i should have thought about Going on STABLE 2 Slim Bean before trying all this, lol.

Open up settings in Messaging. There should be a tick box or some setting to dictate message splitting. Alternately, replace the Mms.apk with one from another ROM if that one doesn't have the setting for it.

There is but it don't work. I tried unistalling mms.apk without success, I was using System App remover, I've always used it with my Epic 4G Touch (S2).
I cleared cache force stopped and disabled, no success.
Any other app I can use to remove system apps?

Made Backup
Installed XenonHD stable
Mms worked
Extracted mms
Restored backup
Still couldn't uninstall mms
Tried to install over current apk, no success
XenonHD 4.2.2
Slim Bean 4.3

When I replace an apk I do this. Pull the new apk from whatever ROM you're taking it from, delete current Mms.apk with something like Root Browser, move new Mms.apk to /system/apps/, fix permissions, reboot to recovery, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot. See if that works.
Edit: You don't install the apk. You have to actually replace the new one with the old one in /system/apps/. Do this with an app like Root Browser using the steps I listed.

Tried with 2 different ROM mms.apk both wouldn't open the app after reboot.
I will try other things, will post if any success, thanks.

OTA 4.1.2

OK so I tried to update with the ota updates I received which booted into clockwork recovery and failed. Status 7 with applicationsprovider.apk as the problem. So I downloaded the original apk from a thread and replaced it. Tried with clearing cache and dalvik cache as well but no difference. Then I got another zip file with all original apks . Deleted the old apk and pasted the new apk ( using es explorer). No difference. Though I have noticed that the new apk that I have pasted doesn't have the same icon as the old original file.
So what do I do now? I have the Google image and the ota zip file as well but don't want to flash the entire ROM. I have been using a simple flashed stock ROM to get to jelly bean and pimp my ROM for further tweak. Please advice.

I believe the OTA will fail since you don't have stock recovery (you have CWM), and the whole system partition must not have been touched for it to work.
I believe your best option is to flash back to stock, and I fear you have to clear data also.

[MOD]Exchange Secuirty Removal (Stock Email Apk) JB & ICS

I've come across several posts/apks/scripts/tweaks to remove the stock email exchange security so I decided to share what I built and used. The email apk that is included in this flashable zip was not created by me (not sure who the developer is so I apologize). This is a simple and quick flashable zip file. I have tested it on my Galaxy S III running both Stock TW JB and AOKP JB (Tasks ROM).
This flash "should" work on both ICS and JB. I've tested this on JB but I've used it previously on ICS. If you have any issues using it on ICS please let me know and I'll update this thread.
Install Insturctions:
STEP 0: Make a nandroid backup or backup your pHere however you see fit.
1. Download the zip File for STOCK TW HERE or AOKP HERE
2. Flash the zip using clockwork recovery
3. WIPE CACHE PARTITION & DALVIK CACHE
4. Reboot Phone and re-setup your exchange account
The apk's in these zip files are technically the same 2 files but named differently to account for whatever rom you're using.
**As always, Flash at your own risk, I am not responsible if anything happens to your phone, but I will feel bad :crying:
SInce this flashable zip replaces your stock email app with a modified apk I'll upload all the stock apk's so you can always revert back easily. If you're not sure what your stock email apk's are just navigate to your system/app folder and find the names of your email.apk and exchange.apk.
AOKP Original Email APK's - Email.apk & Exchange2.apk
Stock TW Email APK's - SecEmail.apk and SecExchange.apk
Other APK Possibility - Email.apk and Exchange.apk
On a side note, I'll be starting an APK Repository shortly just as I did for the Galaxy S II. That thread helped a lot of members on XDA so I'll bring that to the GS3 users as well.
Reserved for future use...
Thanks
Hmm seems like not that many people experienced this problem. But i need to install the email and exchange apk because the costume TouchWiz Jelly Bean rom that i was trying does not contain the email apk file originally (its kinda silly for not contain it by default...) so i need to use the apk files from my old AOKP rom. When i was setting up my exchange email, that security thingy kept popping out, sooooo annoying!!!!! Then i kept looking for a solution to solve it, and here comes the zip file. Flash it immediately, and problem solved!!!!!
Really thank you for this!!!

Make a backup with titanium backup of both your email and exchange apps. After you back them up, delete them both. Flash either of the email updates, wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. You should be fine using either. Worst case scenario, you delete the email APKs you flashed and restore your original ones.

I followed the steps, everything installed correctly I assume because my email app was back after I deleted it. However, exchange still asked me to accept the security steps. Is it supposed to still ask you (and just not allow it to actually make remote changes)?

I was able to delete the 2 apks from \system\app. Where are the 2 odex files? What are they named?
BTW - I'm getting the "Unfortunately, Email has stopped" and "Unfortunately, Exchange service has stopped" messages after removing said 2 files and re-flashing this zip. I'm running Devil's Reject ROM.
New Info: I just looked it up and apparently the odex files are in /data/dalvik-cache. Unfortunately, my /data/dalvik-cache is empty. Hmmmm. I must be doing something wrong. Or perhaps these apks won't run on Devil's Reject v3. Any suggestions?

[Problem] After Flashing Android 4.2 GAPPS

Hi everyone, i just found out that Android 4.2 JellyBean apps like Calendar, Camera, etc.
I just flashed the .zip archive using CWMRecovery and it was OK according to the flashing process feedback dialog.
After flashing, all my core apps are "Force Closing". Launcher, Galery, Camera, Calendar... I had to install nova launcher in order to actually be able to "use" my phone.
Any idea of what might be happening here? Is there any log i can check for troubleshooting ?
I can either revert to the last gapps (if i manage to find them), or , try to fix this crashes.
Any solution in mind ?
I'm using the 4.1.2 Jellybean OS Version (GSM) Yakju on a Galaxy Nexus ofc. Stock rom
Here is the link to the article where i've found the how to : http://phandroid.com/2012/11/06/android-4-2-gapps-package-download/
Here is the link to the download : http://d-h.st/wBX
Hi. I'm using that exact download of gapps with no problem whatsoever. I clean-flashed CNA 3.6.6 (based on AOSP 4.1.1), the gapps, and Trinity A67 kernel. All the gapps that I've used have worked without any FC's at all. Not sure what the problem could be.

I'm using 4.1.2 Jellybean, that can be a problem. Not sure tho.
I've manage to fix the Galery and Camera apps already by simply renaming the GoogleGalery.apk to GoogleGalery2.apk on the System/app folder.
Still crashing : Launcher, Calendar and Clock

You've flashed 4.2 "gapps" over 4.1.2 gapps. FC behaviour was to be expected. Next time, wipe data/reflash rom+gapps, then if things dont work open a thread.

It was not expected. Makes no sense to flash 4.2 GAPPS over a 4.2 Android OS, thats why they extracted it to allow people to flash the apps over Android 4.1 and 4.1.2
Also, wiping data and cache makes no sense in this procedure since the "flashing" process was only copying the .apks to the System/app folder

???? huh? wipe data/factory reset because he already had 4.1.2 GAPPS installed, but on that i was mistaken, that wouldn't solve it, because gapps are pushed to /system/app. what would solve it would be to format /system, flash rom, 4.2 gapps, reboot. if FCs still occur, then wipe data/factory reset.
You need to be deodexed.

Op is using stock, which is odexed. You're using a custom rom, which is probably deodexed. Please post your issue and combo in that 4.2 gapps package thread, since you probably cant do it on the rom's thread (i.e. extra mods not supported by the rom dev), but dont cross post.

[Q] I deleted Google Play, steps to restore?

Due to the limited space available on this phone, I have always had to delete and reinstall apps as needed. I meant to uninstall the first 2 updates for google play, to make some room, so I could update them when I wanted to install an app. I ended up uninstalling the final time, which completely removed Google Play/Android Market.
How would I go about getting it on this phone with severely limited storage?
FYI, it is rooted with stock ROM.

you could probably open a gapps package for one of the aosp roms like cyanogenmod ect and take the market app. then using a root file browser move it to system/app and then set the permissions to the same as the rest of the apps in that folder and then reboot.
just be sure to get the right gapps package for your android version. I.E if your on stock then you are still on gingerbread, so i would use the cm7 gapps as that is also gingerbread.

Flashing with the gapps is one option. But, if you flashed with the wrong one (for eg, gapps for ICS & JB should not be used to flash with the Custom HTC ROM since it runs on Ginger Bread) that could lead to more issues
How about following this link and downloading the apk? This would be helpful only if you have any File manager. Once downloaded , just browse to the apk file and click on it. I would prefer Astro File manager
Well, if you don't have a file manager, then you can download it from here
Oh Yeah .. Almost forgot
Make sure that the option "Allow installation of non-market apps" is checked.
psst..
Try Link2SD and create some partitions in your SD card . You can save some space by doing this
Well, I'm kind of screwed now. I tried a factory reset, from the recovery menu, and STILL didn't get market/google play back. I managed to install titanium backup when a friend sent it to me via bluetooth (before the factory reset), so I backed everything up, but now I don't have anything installed, and I'm pretty sure I lost root as well.
I guess it's more incentive to get that new phone I've been eyeing. Will backed up messages/contacts from gingerbread restore to ICS via titanium backup?

Why did you do that? Factory reset only deletes data files that are not there on stock. It cannot restore anything you have deleted from the system....
If you flash a superuser root zip from recovery you will regain root. Then use adb to install a file browser. Look around to get a copy of es explorer. Its free from the market therefore not warez. Once you have that installed follow the post above to regain the market. No need to get a new phone man. If your really stuck then just flash a custom gingerbread rom and you will have it all back.
Also some app data will restore from gingerbread to ice cream sandwich but which will all depend on how much the app changes between versions.

Hey cam94z28 ,I don't think buying a new phone is necessary. You can just get it right . Then again, its you call
If you are planning to buy a new phone just because of the above mentioned issue, that won't be necessary dude . Flash a new ROM like heavy_metal_man said. Try Wildchild2 or WC3.3. You will get the HTC stock ROM looks rather than the Default Gingerbread looks (as in the case of CyanogenMod 7). Well, one good thing about these ROMs are that they are 99.9% stable . Also, installing the ROM is that all it takes, you don't have to flash gapps or anything. Another good thing is that Anthony has preloaded the ROMs with 'Android Market' app , which is faster and takes less space of our internal memory. Give it a try, mate make sure that your phone is rooted before flashing a new ROM
you can download google play from external sites or just search google android-vending.apk of latest version

I don't think it would go well while changing android versions due to app changes. It maybe would work if updating between versions of cyanogenmod/aosp/aokp roms. Or at a push from sense to sense but these apps are very different from sense to aosp and i dont believe titanium backup would flash data to a different app, and the os change would possibley not support the old apk. I use an app called sms back up restore to back up my texts, and android offers a export contacts to your sd card function. So I use that

That was a new Intel for me . Thanks dude

Yes, I got root back, the zip was still on the sd card. It keeps wanting to upgrade to the newest su binary, but fails every time.
I ended up having a friend send me root explorer via gmail. I downloaded the .apk right from the gmail app, and installed. After enabling r/w mode in root explorer, moving the vending.apk from Wildfire S appropriate gapps package to the /system/app folder, setting permissions, and rebooting, google play is working again. I wish I had done that before doing a factory reset. I backed up first with titanium backup, but can't seem to restore contacts or messages. Tried restoring "Messages", and "MessageCS". Appears to be successful, but nothing shows up in the Messages app.

I guess I used it as an excuse to get a new phone. I always wanted to try a different ROM on my Wildfire S, but now, there's really no need. I guess I could use it as my "experimentation phone", and run everything from Wi-Fi
I ended up getting a LG Optimus L9, and moving to T-Mobile. Very happy with the phone. Not happy with their 4G service so far, but it's only the first day. So far internet is very laggy, and only seems to average 3 bars (out of 5),while Virgin Mobile 3G was always very responsive, and usually had it's total of 4 bars maxed out.
I got the wal-mart $30 special (100 minutes, Unlimited text, Unlimited data, First 5GB at 4G, then throttled). That's a better data plan than VM, but if the service is sluggish, who cares.

[Q] voice calling not supported

I just upgraded from 10.0 to 10.1 with the latest nightly and I'm now getting a error when I try to dial out "Voice calling not supported".
cm-10.1-20130415-NIGHTLY-epicmtd.zip
gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
nexusmodempatch_CM_10.1_AIO_(nitest-01-12 kernel w JB-Big Mem patch).zip
nitest-jb42_nr-twrp-0410.zip
everything else seems to work fine.. wifi & 3g (dont see a 4g option but ill play with that next)
any suggestions? ive seen that its a modem problem but couldnt find a fix.
Since there hasn't been a new patch in a while, what you'll need to do is download a newer ns4g build of 10.1 pull the Phone.apk and Settings.apk out of the build and put those in the patch.

any links for those? im on my phone and im finding nothing when searching. wont be in front of a pc until tomorrow.
thanks for the reply in either case.
I'll attempt to throw an updated patch together.

that would be amazing.. any idea how to get root back? lol.. ive tried a cpl zips with no luck.
I'm assuming you're on cm10.1. So make sure in Settings->Developer options that root access is granted to apps and that you're not using SuperSU.

Alrighty, here it is. Let me know if it flashes okay or not. It'd be pretty awesome if it did considering I made it on my phone lol.

fixed the phone dialer
settings is gone (gone.. its no longer on app list) clicking settings from drop down does nothing. i think it got deleted.
if i re-install cm10.1 zip and gapps and reboot.. settings and root is there but the phone is gone again. (says its in airplane mode)
flash kernel and install your zip.. i got my phone back, but no settings again.
deleting something?
It shouldn't have deleted anything I took the patch you were using originally, swapped the kernel, Settings.apk and Phone.apk for the newer ones, zipped it back up and posted it. I'll look into it.

Yeah... Tried a wipe/reload and still same results.
Wiped/reloaded again and copied over phone.apk from recovery and rebooted (installed nitest-jb42_nr-twrp-0410 and nexusmodempatch_cm_10.1_ai0_(nitest-01-12kernel w jb-big men patch)) also.
Booted fine. Phone works. No root access.
Is that what the settings.apk file is for? I didn't install it. It won't install once the phone is booted up. Didn't want to just copy it over if it didn't need it.
So... Now I'm at the what do I need to do to root stage.
So to update. The phone works now. I wasn't able to use your zip in recovery- but I did pull the phone.apk out once the phone was booted and then rebooted to recovery and copied it over to system/app and once I rebooted my phone was working.
Still no root though.
Thanks a ton for the phone fix.
Maybe a permissions issue with the settings apk? Have you tried fixing permissions in recovery?

So here's the final fix that worked for me. Couldn't have done it without those updated files 'phone.apk' and 'settings.apk'.
From a clean wipe/install (system, data, cache, etc.. everything was blank) I think you could do this on any phone running the latest 10.1 that uses this kernel/modem though. I don't think you need to wipe/reload. Definitely worth trying.
From Recovery:
Installed latest CM-10.1-2013xxxx-NIGHTLY-epicmtd.zip
Installed gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
Installed nitest-jb42_nr_twrp-0410.zip
Installed nexusmodempatch_cm_10.1_AIO_(nitest-01-12 kernel w JB-Big Mem patch).zip
(might have rebooted into recovery after installing jb42 can't remember - if you get a error flashing the modem patch that was a fix for me - then I could install it)
Have the new phone.apk and settings.apk files on your flash card.
(pulled them out of the file initially listed in this post - they were in the system/app folder)
In TWRP - click Mount and check "Mount System" then hit the back button.
Click Advanced button, File Manager, sdcard and browse to where you have the new phone/settings apk files. Click phone.apk and select copy file.
Click system then app and click the 'select' button bottom right.
Do the same for settings.apk
I got a error copying over settings.apk and had to do the following.
Delete the copy of settings.apk in your \system\app folder and try to copy the new version over.
I cleared both caches just because and everything booted fine.
Tons of thanks especially to jeffreyjicha for the files he sent and advice. Also to everyone else who made any suggestions/comments.
Just another tip, use updated gapps. Latest gapps version is 20130301

Well my phone is on CM10.1 now. I used the patch I posted and it worked for me with no problems. Could someone else verify this? That way it can be put in the NS4G Patch thread.
It worked? Were you coming from a complete wipe/reload? System/data/everything?
That's what I did and couldn't get the services.apk to install automatically.
Is the system memory size on these phones all the same?
I did wipe everything. Now that you mention it, I think it worked for me because I removed a bunch of system apps. I removed all the live wallpapers(but not livewallpaperpicker.apk) the video editor, GTalk(I don't use it), CMFileManager(I like ES), oh and I removed Email/Exchange apks. Also in /system/media I deleted the videos folder. After all that I think I had ~30MB of empty space in /system.
Edit: I also removed CMWallpapers( I use my own photos )
