What are the different items I can connect to my Note via the USB On The Go adapter?
Apart from USB thumb pen drives, do external hard drives, wireless keyboard and mouse, gamepsds work?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
they all should work out of the box, except for hard drives, which will need additional power
I want to try this feature but cannot find an adapter that works. I bought one off eBay but that was no good, the supplier stated it was for the Galaxy Note but didn't work on Gingerbread 2.3+ which was odd as obviously the Note ships with Gingerbread 2.3
I contacted Samsung who said I needed the official Samsung OTG cable but they don't sell to Joe Public .. trawling endless sites to find a supplier came up zero.
So if anyone know of a supplier (UK preferred) of one of these compatible adapter / cables please let me know
Good to see someone started this topic, very useful..
I have the Galaxy note and managed to connect my Keysonic keyboard with builtin mouse with no problems. I have the otg adapter and when I plugged in the wireless adapter the note picked it up as a keyboard and mouse, worked great.

Also the scrolling on the mousepad worked!!

Does the Nokia OTG adaptor work with the note? Anyone tried?
Thanks a lot for the Amazon link I also found the identical one on the UK site here:

I shall order one and report back

I've just tried my N8s adaptor but no luck I'm afraid. It's connector to the phone is thicker and simply won't fit into the Note.
Nokia (at least the official cable) uses the "correct" Micro USB A for Hostmode.
You have to get Micro USB B for the Note.
(B cable fit in A but not otherwise)

Anyone try a generic USB Gamepad? I have a PS3 copy/generic USB that would be cool to hook up to it for emulator games.
I have the original adapter and it's working great:

USB gamepads should work when ICS is coming. Its in there.
dose this mean that not any OTG cable will work!
most are working but some are cheap quality
and some not well made
i bought several OTG cables from a seller on ebay and all worked

Are you referring to those external hard drives that take power from the USB port?
What about those external hard drives that take on a separate power supply, those that are attached to a power socket? Anyone tried plugging in one of those to a Note?
ok I just buy one and it did work fine with sandisk 64gb.
so it's confirmed that it can read portable drives.
looking forward to owning one.
Has anyone tried using a Micro USB OTG adapter and MHL HDMI adapter at the same time? Is it even possible?
Thinking of watching movies off of an external drive on my HDTV with the GN. I may just have to stream them from my computer over WiFi.

Yeah! Is it possible?
I ordered all components yesterday to test this exact thing. I will report back with my findings. I ordered the mhl adapter, HDMI cable, and the otg cable. I already have a micro SD reader that's extremely small. Total cost was $30 on amazon.... I also ordered a wii sensor bar that was around 6 bis. I'm also going to attempt to integrate the otg cable in a case. Pics will follow

I think that isn't possible. Both MHL and USB OTG uses the same microusb port, but behind that there are different circuits. Depending on wich connector you plug in the hardware will know if you are connecting an usb or a HDMI.
More, the microusb on MHL connector is only for ac supply.

From what ive read, it is not possible. Youre disabling usb to get hdmi function through 4 wires. And that function needs power.

MHL and OTG
@justin94, please report back if you get it working. Actually, if you can get OTG to work at all with or without MHL let us know. I've gotten the MHL to work. But I need to connect some USB devices up, and from what I've read, the current Nexus stock firmware doesn't support OTG/Host.
Also, what OTG cable did you order? I've heard there are ones that don't work?

NO NAO~! lol. j/k
MHL will only charge the phone via USB. You can't use USB data. Bluetooth is your only option for external hardware input (controllers, etc... but not thumb drives)
I don't want to rain on your parade, but I said it would charge your phone at the same time, but it's limited to 500ma. Nexus reports as USB charging, not AC charging. So if you intend to watch a long movie and game real hard via emulation and bluetooth, your phone will run out of battery.
Another poor design decision. They should have just put a HDMI port separately. MHL fail.
The only saving grace will be using the pogo pins to charge the phone via AC so you can get 1A charging while using MHL.
MHL fail.
Update!!!
Just received the mhl adapter and HDMI cable. Its plug and play, however, it does require power..... so my hopes of getting this to work are almost over..... except that I fairly good with electronics. So I'm going to do some splicing and dicing and see what works.
Don't worry, if it works I will post a full tutorial

Now that JB is out for the One X I want to get a USB OTG cable.
Can anyone who has one tested and working for plugging into an external hard drive (a 1tb externally powered Toshiba drive) post a link in the UK of where to get one? This will enable me to transfer files, photos and videos etc from the hard drive quickly / easily.
Ideally from amazon or someone like that - I don't fancy guessing which ones will work etc, it would be great to only buy one!
Many thanks in advance
i couldn't connect it external hard drive ( i think hard drive needs more Electricity ) but it works with flash memories fine
I think an OTG cable is an OTG cable... I just tried the one that came with my USB keyboard folio case I use with my Nexus 7, which works fine with the HOX now its updated to the new HBoot/kernel.

true, any otg cable should work if it's really otg, however you should get a usb powered one for a hard drive if the hard drive does not have a y split cable.

I have a Bytestor 4gb FAT32 stick that works fine with no extra power etc, but I tried my 1TB external powered hard drive and it failed
I only just realised it is NTFS to avoid the 4gb limit for files for videos etc.
So if I install USB OTG Helper I can use NTFS? Nice - that needs Root though - how can you use NTFS drives if you are not-rooted and stock JB?

Using it right at this very moment on my very own N7 2013 built in July 2013
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0073EPXO4/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is what I'm using. Cheap & works great & is pretty thick, I feel like it'll last long.
I use this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YPYORM/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
purchased from seller: Atomic Market for around $10
It has the additional bonus of being able to accept power via its additional USB cable.
I find the Nexus 7 LTE 2013 does not need the additional power for typical USB thumb drives, but it might be needed for other devices like an external disk drive.
I find my Chromecast must have this cable powered in order to use a USB thumb drive to root and replace the android operating system.
You can save a few bucks for a cable that does not provide power if you want.
I also own this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(purchased from amazon seller: Digital Center(Ships From Hong Kong)
which only costs $1.49 with free shipping. It was $0.83 when I purchased it last year.
It works on the Nexus 7 LTE 2013 with USB thumb drives, but does NOT provide additional power for devices which may need it.
Can you confirm thath this otg power cable charges the nexus 7 2013 while still reading peripheral data from usb port?

I can only confirm that both OTG cables I own work on the Nexus 7 2013.
i am using one that came with my minix x5 and it works on all my android devices, but the connection is loose. i would be surprised if there was one that did not work as the cable itself is such a simple thing.
i would also like to know of a working powered option. i thought the powered cables only supply power to the accessory, not to charge the device itself.

Since you have the USB OTG cable with the additional cable for charging, would you mind testing it by:
1). Connecting a working USB device (mouse, HDD, etc.)
2). Connecting the USB power to the 2nd cable in the OTG cable
I am trying to use a BT keyboard and non-BT wireless mouse and charge the N7, but unfortunately, it drains the battery down heavily.
PS: I CANNOT use both BT keyboard and mouse AND have Wifi ON, as it interferes with the BT radio, making the keyboard and mouse lag heavily. I have created a thread on this also.

My y-connector from my n4 doesn't charge while using USB otg. The ability to do so is not written in the software. I'll try to locate the source and report. OTOH, the USB otg connectors from my GNex and N4 all work on my N5 and both old and new N7's.
EDIT: I just ran across this. I'm sure it's for the original N7. I wasn't even aware of it so obviously have not tested it. I did use ziddey's kernel on the N4. Still searching.
2nd EDIT: Available for N7 FLO/DEB 4.4.2. I'm running franco but will revert to stock then try this (as soon as I make a nandroid of my device).
3rd EDIT: That kernel does work to charge while on usb otg. It is a setting you choose to activate during the set-up. I just chose stock everything until I got to the power choices. I will say that although the install was successful, I came as close as I've ever come to thinking my device was bricked. After the install, the screen went black and I couldn't do anything. After about a 30 sec power button mash, everything booted back up. This video shows installation on the N5. Some choices are different on the N7 FHD. As I said above, I was NOT returned to TWRP after installation.
There is a note about altering a sys file for OTG peripherals. I only attached a flash drive and the usb_charge_mode was set to Y (I assume for yes). You may have to perform the edit if using a peripheral device.

Really nice to run across this! I have a 1TB WD Passport, OTG cable, an Anker external battery, and Nexus Media Importer and they work great with this setup. I had tried a powered USB hub and it worked but this is much better from my perspective - hadn't thought of trying the battery pack.
Interestingly, I also have 2 500GB WD Passports that worked without additional power on my 2012 N7 but they won't work without additional power on my 2013 N7.
Thanks for the post!

Probably are - Amazon was convenient. As for speed, I don't have a way to measure transfer speeds but I do know it is fast and in no way impedes video file viewing direct from the HDD. Using on a laptop, I can see that it does give true USB 3.0 transfer speeds.

You don't really need the Nexus Media Importer app to access external hard drive files.I'm on Cm10.2.0 and I'm using ES File Explorer to access the files. I do get random reboots due to the Nexus overheating say after an hr of video play directly from the HD.

True - I was responding from the perspective of a stock device. I haven't seen the reboots - are you overclocking with Cm?
