Flashing Roms? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Sup guys, I've never had a android device with no sdcard, do what happens when you wipe the phone, all my nandroids, pictures etc get deleted?

No, unless you tell recovery to wipe your internal sd. When you do a wipe in a custom recovery, doing the factory data reset will wipe everything on /data and /cache but it will leave the internal sdcard partition alone.

OK, I figured something like that! Thanks

[Solved]How to wipe sdcard?

I would like to wipe the sdcard storage, but I don't know if it's possible...
I have a gsm galaxy nexus, rooted, unlocked, not official JB Rom, with the last version of CWM.
I'm worried because of the clockwordmod folder, which contains the backups (which I don't want to save). Is this folder necessary for the program to work?
If there's no problem, is there a way to do that in recovery mode?
Of course I'll do that when changing new Rom, just to avoid apps problems.
Sorry about my English.

you don't need the clockworkmod folder on your internal sdcard for CWM recovery to work on your phone. If you wipe the sdcard, you'll lose any back-ups, but the recovery will work fine.
Within CWM recovery, go to "mounts and storage" and then "format /sdcard", and that will wipe it.
edit to add:
while this will wipe your sdcard, there is no need to format /sdcard before flashing a new ROM. as long as you wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, you should be good to go to install a new ROM.

Thanks for the answer. I know I don't need to wipe sdcard, is just that I have installed so many apps, and there are a lot of folders (the app Sd Maid don't clean everything) that I don't need, and I would like to clean it.

Why do you want the full script? Is it to wipe the internal storage? The reason I ask is I was recently looking around for the same thing but couldn't find it. I did find about the easiest way to wipe the internal storage though by just locking and unlocking the bootloader. So if that's what you're after give that a try.
What we need:
A script that wipes: /data, /cache, dalvik cache.

Why? One click in cwm takes care of data and cache. Dalvik is handled when you flash a new Rom
Raise yer mizzenmast and swab 'er poop deck!
Wiping /data and then wiping /data/dalvik is redundant as dalvik is wiped when you factory reset.
Also, it takes longer to go through the menu to install the wipe script than it does to just factory reset, AND the ROM takes care if wiping /system for you.
Plus, the script to wipe /data would have to be careful to leave /data/media intact, (your sdcard).

Fully wipe before flashing a new ROM?

What's the best way to fully wipe before flashing a new ROM? I don't mean wiping from cwm. In my old phone which was the atrix, I could fully wipe using fastboot but the gs3 is different.

The quickest/most efficient/safest way to fully wipe is using the wipe menu in cwm or twrp
Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, then go into mounts & storage and format system all in recovery
What does formatting /data in mounts in storage delete? I tried looking for the guide I saw weeks ago. I Just need to know what to backup (pictures, music etc)

The data partition... It's not a needed step because the Wipe Data / Factory Reset does that, but I do it anyways...
Ok so because it's redundant I won't lose my pictures and music because I don't lose it after a factory reset?

None of those steps will wipe your internal or external SD, but the options for that do exist in recovery...

Internal SD wipe ok?

I just got an extended battery and wanted to wipe my internal SD so I can have a clean start and flash revolt with lightning kernel. I have no access to a computer. Would it be safe to put the ROM on my SD then wipe internal, then flash all in one recovery session? Thanks
It is probably ok. Although just to be sure I would stick a reboot in between.

But if I reboot I wouldn't be able to get back into recovery though right? Or would it not wipe that part?
If you just wipe internal only you still have a rom. If you format system your rom is gone. And you can just reboot recovery its much faster. You can go ahead and try it all at once. Worst outcome is you reflash the rom. No biggie

Yeah I just wanted to do a complete internal SD wipe, I didn't want to get locked out with no recovery. I'll wipe, then reboot then wipe ROM I guess then flash

If you go to settings/storage and format your internal, it will wipe it clean, but you'll still have your ROM.Just did it the other day.

Thanks guys. It's just internal SD, not sure why I was thinking about the internal phone storage.

Well to me internal phone storage is internal sd card. The reason I didnt say for you to wipe that in setting is because I was unsure of the rom. As far as I can remember some stock roms had the brick bug still in it if you access the wipe by settings> storage.

Either way, I'm on a night shift and tired as hell, didn't think it through haha. Thanks for the help

Factory reset to remove user data. Will wipe intsd if on stock recovery.
Use Odin to return to stock. This won't wipe data.
Your question could be worded better, I think. Did I answer your question? Not entirely sure what you're asking.
In CWM:
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Wipe data factory reset
While in Cwm:
Go to mounts and storage
Format data and /data/media (/sdcard)
Flash rom
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Doing those steps will completly wipe the internal storage and when you boot the phone up everything will be as if you just unboxed the phone and started using it for the first time.
You can double check after flashing the rom, reboot device and skip all of the options in the setup wizard, then go to settings> storage and see how much memory is available.

May leave a dirty trace if not done properly. Wipe a few times to be sure.

Thats why you double check, by going to settings> storage afterwards.

Also if you do double check by going to settings> storage, afterwards just boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset, wiping cache and dalvik cache is optional.
