I just got an extended battery and wanted to wipe my internal SD so I can have a clean start and flash revolt with lightning kernel. I have no access to a computer. Would it be safe to put the ROM on my SD then wipe internal, then flash all in one recovery session? Thanks
It is probably ok. Although just to be sure I would stick a reboot in between.

But if I reboot I wouldn't be able to get back into recovery though right? Or would it not wipe that part?
If you just wipe internal only you still have a rom. If you format system your rom is gone. And you can just reboot recovery its much faster. You can go ahead and try it all at once. Worst outcome is you reflash the rom. No biggie

If you go to settings/storage and format your internal, it will wipe it clean, but you'll still have your ROM.Just did it the other day.

Well to me internal phone storage is internal sd card. The reason I didnt say for you to wipe that in setting is because I was unsure of the rom. As far as I can remember some stock roms had the brick bug still in it if you access the wipe by settings> storage.

I have a question I think it might be stupid but I was wondering when we wipe our phones just a factory wipe or when we go to flash a rom does that mean the things that are saved to the internal memory are going to be wiped also.

Short answer... No.
I think its good to know why. Consider it this way: the internal memory is mounted as if it were an sd card. On any other phone, when you root and flash, the sd card doesn't get affected because you are only altering the ROM. Everything on the sd card stays the same. Same process with ours: the phone registers that partition as an sd card, separate from the ROM.

I've tried several roms and each time I wipe data, cache, and dalvik via CWM and Ive never lost any of my data including pictures, downloaded files etc from my internal storage.

Anything on your internal memory will stay. When you wipe data factory reset it only deletes the root partition. Doesn't include the sdcard. Internal or external. In cwm it will not delete uour music if it is stored in the internal SD card. If you do a master reset through the stock ROM. It gives you the option to format sdcard. If you check it. It WILL wipe the internal SD card.
In conclusion:
Your music should be safe if you wipedata/ factory reset from recovery.
If you do a factory reset through the stock ROM and you check format SD card you will lose anything in the internal SD card.

You actually have the option to wipe your SD card at the time of a master reset through settings. What it states is all system data will be deleted. Including contacts saved on phone memory settings apps. Etc. It does NOT automatically erase your internal SD card when you do a regular master reset.

no it does not. i do not have any other sd card in my phone except the built in one. i have flashed about 5 roms and each time i did a full wipe in CWM and my music AND photos stayed.
That's not the same as a factory data reset. Reread my post.

Sorry to correct you but a factory data reset does not wipe the internal SD card. It doesn't matter if you wipe your phone through recovery or settings. Unless you tell your phone to it will not wipe the sd card. I don't know where you are getting your information from but you have to tell your phone to format the SD card. Factory data reset does not wipe internal SD card automatically neither does a master reset. You must select that option to format USB storage. In other words internal SD card.

Dang dude I had to restore md5 and try for my self. But I stand corrected.
Wiping data WILL erase your internal sd card.
I went through the whole process of restoring stock rom and put a song in the internal storage root directory and did a master reset. When it rebooted song was gone! First time I see this on a galaxy. In conclusion, it's been tested and YES it will delete your internal SD.

I did full wipe and reflash many time throught install of new roms,whats "TWRP'?plz respond,sorry it took days for me to respond when im the one asking for help,lol,just now checking up on issue again because im getting very annoyed with having to manually mount internal sd every boot.
EDIT: I got the issue fixed,I just formatted system in recovery...so to anyone else having a similar issue,just wipe data and format system in recovery...
I just visited the FAQ & I saw that if I flash a ROM it will wipe my internal storage. Is there a way around that or is that gonna become a part of life for owning the S3? And also, when flashing a ROM, do you always to flash that firmware/modemAIO.zip? Sorry if these questions have already been asked but like I said, I'm new to the S3(not new to android/flashing ROMs)

When first flashing you want to make a back up on your computer . So back up your internal sd and external sd if you have one . To do so you will need to install the samsung drivers on your computer. The modem firmware is only flashed if the rom hour flashing is not updated with the latest n greatest which most are . Be sure to only flash roms that your carrier specific. Let us know how it goes.

Well yes, of course. Most ROMs call for you to wipe data/factory reset to flash them. My question was if there is a way to wipe your data without wiping the internal storage.

I'm sorry but wiping data/factory reset will not delete your internal storage. If it did then I would never be able to flash any roms or kernels lol. It wipes your data clean and any stored personal info and accounts, allowing a clean install of a new rom. All your stored pictures, files, downloads will remain intact.

Flastnoles11, what are you hitting that it clears? Internal SD or External SD do not get touched on factory wipe reset. You should not loose anything.

Idk man but it clears out my entire internal storage when I hit wipe data... even warns that internal storage will be wiped before hand...

No he was just hitting the wrong option. You only need to hit wipe/factory reset when installing a new rom and it will not wipe your internal or external.

You dont loose anything stored on the internal memory . But you always want make a back up to your computer or make a nand back up just in case something goes wrong in the process.
OK so recently I formatted my data on internal memory and when I went to reboot my phone it wouldn't go past the galaxy s4 screen! So I reboot into recovery and tried wiping cache and dalvick but nothing worked to get me past the s4 screen so I rebooted back into recovery and did a clean flash of the I'm using and everything seemed ok got my phone all setup again but when I try to just do a simple reboot it still won't go past the s4 screen?!? The only thing that fixes it is clean flashing my ROM again I'm not sure what is going on but I would just like to be able to reboot my phone! Any help would be great!!

If this is the case, using Odin to restore to complete stock should fix it as it will include teh pit file that restores the partitions.

Yea its weird the only way I'm able to Reboot my phone is I have to boot into recovery then wipe cache and it'll reboot fine but at the moment i don't have a computer to fix it so I just gotta deal with it and also the only way to flash a new ROM is by formatting internal SD again and clean flashing to get it to flash right
