Hey folks,
Is there an app similar to Titanium Backup for phones that are non-rooted? I recently had to revert back to stock in order to get my work e-mail and calendar. I'm looking for something that will create a big backup in which I could easily restore all my apps, settings, and layouts like Titanium Backup does.

Not that I am aware of. You need to be rooted.

Forgot about that. However, as that guide states, it's assumed that the user already has the latest Android SDK installed. If someone has not rooted, or is not trying to root, chances are they won't have it. And even if they do, imo it still a simpler process to root and create a nandroid and titanium backup.
But, it does answer the OP's question! There is a way to backup without root. Thanks for posting it as I had completely forgot that was there!

True, but there are some users that are savvy enough for this guide that do not want a rooted phone for one reason or another. I concur, rooting and running TiBu would be the easier/better way to go.

Wouldn't you just need the ADB executable to do this, like the one in my signature?

Based on my experience, Yes. The ADB.exe with the required modules/drivers should work for this shell-type work.
EDIT: I just checked the .zip in your signature for ADB and it includes the .exe and the modules as well as fastboot. This should work as long as the device drivers are installed or available

The problem for me though is that I can't unroot and reroot due to my work e-mail security parameters. I need to always come off a clean slate (to my understanding there isn't a clean way around the root) so I was looking for a method to do a full backup like TiBu but without having to ever root and unroot your device.

The guide states that it requires the latest SDK, but it's probably just how he gets adb to begin with I guess. I haven't looked real close at it, but I wonder if there'd be a good way to batch script something like this....

Sure, it could be automated with a simple batch file (with appropriate pauses for phone interaction). I would do it myself, but this wine won't drink itself :laugh:
I don't find such an option to be terribly useful, to be honest.

Would a Custom Recovery be OK? because both CWM and TWRP have Backup/Restore capabilities that would not require Root, just the aftermarket recovery.

You don't need to be rooted for a custom recovery, just install from ODIN and you're good. This will increase the "binary count" and set the firmware to "custom" if that makes a difference. The stock ROM/FW/Baseband/modem/etc are all left exactly how they were when you started.

If I need to wipe my binary count, I can just use Triangle Away correct? I don't need to be rooted for that?

Yes, and Yes, but you can root and run it then "full unroot".
There are other ways (ADB/Fastboot mainly) to install it without "bumping the count". You would need to what partition to install do and it can be complicated, this greatly increases the brick factor, ODIN is much easier/safer.

Good morning, I'm sorry to contradict you but, my understanding is that having a custom recovery will bump the flash counter regardless of how it is installed. It also changes the device status to modified.
Both situations can of course be rectified by going back to stock recovery, with root and running triangle away. He then could unroot.

Oh, I was under the impression that ODIN was what bumped the count if it was a non-Samsung signed file. Truth be told, I never really looked in to it since it doesn't really matter to me.
No worries. You are half right. Both situations will bump the flash counter with recent firmware. It didn't used to be the case, but with all of the bs Samsung has been pulling, they added the additional check for a custom recovery.
I just got thinking, I think heilium might be able to do a backup on an unrooted phone.

Koush strikes again, it looks like he has scripted the adb backup (and added some stuff too, I'm sure): http://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
Instead of all that hair splitting, I am surprised no one has mentioned My Backup Lite (or pro)
That app will do backup like Titanium except without Root. If you have root then there are additional features. But not needed for basic backup.

Which zip would not flash in recovery?
The only zip you will flash in recovery is team epic root from recovery. And it must be flashed in the recovery that was installed with Odin.
If you let the phone restart after flashing recovery in Odin the custom recovery will be replaced by the stock recovery.

It will not wipe any data and can be used to root any version android on the Sprint gs3.

1. Can I accept over-the-air updates from Sprint on a rooted phone? i.e. when they push Android 4.2. If not, do I unroot and reroot to update? Do I have to uninstall everything?
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?

This is not going to be a straight up yes or no answer. If an update comes ota to your phone, you will be able to receive it providing you:
1. reflash stock recovery before accepting it.
2. haven't flashed a custom rom
3. haven't removed any required software. The ota will look for certain software and files. if the required software and files aren't present the ota will fail
None of this should concern you though. There are ALWAYS ways to get the updates while being rooted

These instructions seem like you are doing many things. You aren't. There are really only 5 steps. I just broke all the steps down in detail. Really all this is:
1. Downloading all the files to your computer
2. Installing your Samsung Drivers to your computer
3. Copying one file to your phones sd or external sd card. (Team_Epic Root_From Recovery)
4. Flashing CWM Recovery to your phone with Odin.
5. Flashing TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip with CWM Recovery
The Team Epic File that you are flashing in recovery installs superuser, busy box, and in addition removes two files needed to make recovery stick.

Rooting is really nothing more than giving you the user, the right to access root or system files. It has very little to do with flashing as you can flash updates with stock recovery.
Flashing is simply installing something in a tar, img, or zip format. tar files are flashed with Odin, zips are flashed from recovery and img files are flashed or pushed with adb (Android Debug Bridge)or fastboot.
Cyanogen is a rom. roms are very simply the phones operating system and user interface. They're called roms because their files are kept on read only memory. There are many roms out there for our phone.

This works with the 4.1 update, correct?
I previously had the Galaxy S1 (Epic) and went through several custom ROMs before finally going back to a stable release with root because of dissatisfaction with the ROMs. My phone never really returned to perfect functionality after this experimentation, and always had some buggy glitches and many FC's. Now that I have a perfectly running GS3 with Android 4.1, I would love to be able to wifi tether and install apps like adblock and Titanium Backup Pro, but I am hesitant because of my past experience.
Do you think there is any reason at all that simply doing this root procedure would change the functionality of my perfectly smooth-running GS3?

Since then I have rooted and just have a few simple questions.
I haven't installed a custom ROM, and I really don't know much about them other than that they are an alternative to the stock android os (4.1, 4.0, etc.) that comes with your phone. I have a few questions about ROMs.
I have heard good things about cleanROM, and I want to download it to my phone, but I can't seem to find my phone's version of it. Does it even exist for my version? If not, what are some excellent alternatives? (Must be able to change status bar, I hate the grey one in 4.1.1, just updated tonight) Finally, with a custom ROM, will I ever have to do anything with the stock OS again? Because I get this error message now after i have upgraded to 4.1.1, that doesnt let me check for updates as I have rooted my phone.

I may be wrong but it looks like cleanROM is for only Verizon. I dont think Scott has an AT&T version because he does not have our phone.

I had the same questions as you did when I first started...
Best thing to do is go into the android development forums or the android original development fund a Rom, read some of the posts and feedback on it, and if you like what your reading try it out due your self.
Some roms are built around the stock TWz JB os so looks wise is minimal but alot of the extra crap removed i.e all att bloat crap apps that you never use, and other tweaks here and there.
All this into can be found on the OPs first post about the Rom, and make sure that Rom is due your phone!
Follow all pre flashing instructions, and backup!!!!!
Just flash and test it out, worst case you can just restore back to your back up and it will be as you never flashed.
There is a link with the most common Roms I'm pretty sure it's a sticky, I always use a rom that active support for it so as issues come up, they get resolved.
This stuff can get very confusing, read, search, and just post Qs some people like my self have no qualms responding to repeat questions as we all were there once before.

I have a few more questions. What is a good backup application? I really know nothing about them so if somebody would reccomend one that would be great! Another thing that drew me to cleanROM is that usefull applications like kies air and dropbox weren't removed. Is this the case with many roms?

Dropbox is always downloadable from the play store. Pretty sure it's the same deal with kies air, you can just redownload.
Backup as system is always done in CWM.
Backup applications and data for them,I highly recommend titanium back up, awesome app but phone needs to be rooted, with that app you can backup all your applications, flash a rom then just install titanium backup and restore all applications. It's very nice!

Sorry for the double post, but I just realized after installing titanium that I no longer have root access. My device state is still modified and applications I had before I upgraded to 4.1.1 that needed root still work. However, no new apps that require root will work, and root checkers say my device isn't rooted help please!

So your phone isn't rooted..
Did you try to when you hold vol- and power does the phone boot into recovery mode which should be CWM ... if that happens you are rooted..
Otherwise try to start all over with Odin and the tar files you need to root.

I use Titanium Backup all the time. Everytime I install a new ROM, warranty my phone, or do any sort of wipe. It is amazing!! I dont ever back up system apps tho, just user installed. It backs up everything from the APK to saved games and settings!

Odin is used to root the phone from stock.. it allows you to first install cwm and su ..once that is done, Odin isn't used any longer unless your reverting back to stock, CWM is used thus forward.

So I still have su, it just doesn't work. Will rooting again with odin affect anything negatively? I think I'll try Cyanogenmod once I root again, it seems like a good customizable rom

You should have no problems... And su needs to set permissions, and binaries..

This thread details the process of how to root your device without having to flash a full stock ROM. This method works for the Sprint, Boost and Virgin Samsung Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710, SPH-D710BST and SPH-D710VMUB).
This method uses an Odin One-Click Kernel to install a kernel that includes a Custom Recovery. Once booted into the Custom Recovery you can then flash Superuser which will root your phone and give you Superuser access.
Prerequisites:
A PC running Windows with the Samsung Mobile Drivers Installed. The Samsung Mobile Drivers are available here.
Any One-Click Kernel (preferably from the Android version you will be using, i.e. GB, ICS or JB).
All Sprint One-Click Recovery kernels can be found here.
For this particular tutorial I used the following kernels:
Gingerbread: Chris41g's EL26 Stock CWM5 Repack
Ice Cream Sandwich: Agat63's tFI27 Stock Recovery Repack (rev 2)
Jelly Bean: Agat63's Source-Built GB27 Recovery
Superuser (or SuperSU, MIUI Security, and etc) in a flashable zip, saved on your Internal or External SD Card. For this method I used SuperSU v1.25 (but any SU in a flashable ZIP should work). You can download several different versions here.
Although not required it is recommended that you have Samsung Kies installed on your PC as well. You can download Samsung Kies here.
Side-Effects:
This method will trigger the Yellow Triangle upon start-up and will increase your Odin count.
It will also change your startup screen to look like the International GS2 startup screen.
Both of these side-effects are very easy to overcome due to the hard work of Chainfire and Garwynn. You can get TriangleAway from Chainfire's thread here.

Will any of these methods work with FL24? I'm new to rooting Samsungs and am used to simply rooting via exploits through ADB. I have the phone rooted (temp rooted?) via the exploit in Framaroot and am trying to get a custom recovery installed next to flash a ROM. Thanks!

The Kernel One-Click flashes the kernel and recovery together. They are combined on the E4GT.
hey first of thank you for your great work. but Im having issues. Once I reboot ,i had superuser app but nothing has root access. Im wondering what i did wrong. i have sph-d710vmub. Im trying to flash in recovery mode and nothing is working for me. I was told to flash a rooted rom but still anything that i try doing says installation aborted.. Please help;

You might have to turn SU on depending on which version you flashed. Open the app and see if under settings you see something like "Enable SuperUser" and make sure it's enabled.
If that doesn't fix it we may need to try another zip with a different set of symlinks. Either way, we're here for you and will get you squared away.

what if flash the rooted stock rom that you have for sph-d710vmub on your website. will that help?. because i am about to flash it.
Ok i installed the rooted stock rom fj12 now i have rooted access. But my phone is asking me for an update. Cam i go ahead and update yes or no.?
Ok nevermind i updated to see what happend and it got me to fl26. No root access again. So im learning the hardway.

If you're asking - Can I flash VM builds on the Sprint D710, the answer is - yes. Did it when I tested the builds and everything worked properly.
If you're asking - Can I flash a VM build and be on VM service? Obviously you'll need to be activated to their service and provisioned properly. That's when you'd need to make sure that mmsc/apn/nv data is captured. I don't know if VM is a byod provider. (write that shiz down)

Yes. Many, many people have used this method successfully.
There's nothing wrong with a stock kernel, it just doesn't have a custom recovery packed into it or any kernel tweaks.
But I am confused... If you're already rooted why are you pulling your hair out?

Well mostly because I'm a noob lol. I heard also that if you do a factory reset with stock kernel you will brick it. But I want the extra options anyway. and really want to flash aJB ROM. Thank you very much for quick response, I shall give this a go in the morning.:thumbup:

K. Before you dive in too much further I would recommend doing a little more research. This device had had issues in the past that have made it very easy to brick. You should be very careful.
As a side note - This thread is a how to root thread but it sounds like you're already rooted. I don't know that there's any reason to reroot your device. You don't actually have to be rooted to get on JB either. You could just flash a one-click of a JB ROM.

If you root you wont be able to install any ota updates (if there are any more coming) to unroot you would need to Odin a stock unrooted ROM. I know there is a sticky thread for unrooting with directions and the links to the stock ROMs.
IMO the 4.2.2 ROMs out right now far exceed any factory updates that will ever be available but to each their own.

I have NOT updated a ROM, using only stock, also I didn't install a ROM manager.
Sounds as though you are recommending I update the ROM.
I was under the impression if I didn't install a ROM manager, just root wouldn't disable my ability to get OEM updates??

Well, questions go under Help and Troubleshooting. I don't understand why someone would send you to General. That is odd. Also, in the Help/Troubleshooting/Q&A section, there is a handy "No stupid questions" thread.
You might be able to install updates, as you don't have a custom recovery (that's usually the issue). You'll most probably lose root, though. Funky things can happen, though. Safer to unroot before updating OTA, though.

Right, and that's what I'm getting at, because I did NOT install a custom recovery. Okay, wrong place for the post, got it - was directed by a system generated message is all.
Yeah, this is not a stupid question and I would think someone will know the answer based on the method I used to attain root, with my model phone. It either will update, or it won't. I'm trying to understand known future scenarios because I rooted.
And there is a link to UNROOTING here that the system won't allow me list, I tried.

If and when an updated stock ROM comes out, all you have to do is use ODIN to flash it on to your phone and them re-root. That's it. You'll then have the newest stock ROM with root.
That's what I do. I like the stability of a stock ROM but I like having the freedom to freeze or uninstall a lot of the bloat using Titanium.

Ah ok. I'll have to understand the steps necessary to do that.
So flashing a stock ROM removes root, and then re-root the same method as I used.

To get a better idea I would say YouTube things like how to root samsung galaxy s3 for whatever carrier you have. And YouTube how to unroot for whatever carrier you have.
And I'm sure you will wonder the question of what's a good rom to use and really it would be you're taste and trail and error. And nanroid is another term of making a backup and how to restore them. I'm telling you now for future headaches learn how to make back ups and how to restore them and move your backups to you're pc.
How I do is I use twr and make a backup of you're rom that you're using. And I plug my phone to the pc and go in the folder of twr and find backups and move the file and save it the pc. But you will learn as you go. Clockwork mod is also another recovery and you can make backups with that also

Immediately after rooting I installed Titanium Backup Pro and backed everything up, moved a copy to PC and off-sys storage.
I don't have ROM versions now, that I should get by following that link above.

when updating firmware, you will most likely lose root. download root keeper from the play store to keep your superuser access https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
understand that you may not be able to get the OTA update if you've used your root access to change any system files at all. the updater will check all that before downloading the update and let you know if you're good to go or not.

Yeah, that's exactly what my plan is now.
1) Added root via Odin (Mr. Robinson's method)
2) Downloaded Titanium Backup Pro, ran a full backup / set schedules to keep 2 copies of incremental backups weekly.
3) Downloaded various other apps taking advantage of root
4) Created a file system structure on the PC for ROOT / UNROOT
5) Made sure I have the necessary files in each folder including stock ROMs for root / unroot
6) Wrote the procedures to go both directions easily (no forgetting months down the road).
7) Automated backups from the phone to PC
8) Automated backups of ALL on PC to various external media for storage
- I included TriangleAway in case I flash custom ROMs and need to reset my flash counter.
Currently it's state is NO [as the above process did NOT trip the counter].
- My plan is to Odin flash the next stock ROM with root once available as you mentioned. [Will also update the OEM ROM to unroot at the same time.]
Being new to this (and smart phones) - I needed a method to control this device and not allow it to control me.
Now I feel a sense of stability that I can go in either direction, not lose data, and not lose my sanity in the process.

Will our i747 do over the air updates from AT&T after being rooted? Does the phone have to be completely stock unrooted in order to take an over the air? Just wondering. I do have Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper but thought I'd at least ask the question before I update from 4.1.2 to 4.2 or 4.3 soon from AT&T. Any help appreciated!

Not so sure about Voodoo OTA because i've never used it, but yes you have to 100% stock to use the OTA.

I'm trying to apply the OTA update to move to KitKat but I've tried it twice now and both times before it even starts doing anything on the installation after turning off, I get a dead android icon with a red triangle and an exclamation point. I figured this issue was due to me removing some packages to uninstall bloat but I restored all the ones I backed up and I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I'm rooted using the saferoot on 98.30.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US. How can I get my phone to update? I'm aware that I'll lose root but it's not imperative for me. I really only use it to get rid of ads using AdAway. Thanks in advance!
Is there a way to get the apk's for all the system installed apps that come with the Droid RAZR M? I could go through and install the ones I'm missing that way. I thought I backed up any ones that I was removing so that this wouldn't happen when a new OTA came out but apparently not.
Your best bet will likely be to RSD back to stock and then take the OTA.

And then download the same version of Android I have now (98.30.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US) from here - http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=8 and install that?

Would that do a factory reset in the process? I just want to know if I need to backup my pictures before hand. I haven't had a problem with doing OTA's and losing pictures but I guess if there's some in there I want to keep I should back them up anyways. I don't really use my phone for many pictures though.
Using the linked files it shouldn't delete user data (wipe), but some system settings will get reset.

I would use house of moto. It reflashed the system, boot.img, etc, and I kept all of my data. When it booted up, I took the update just fine. Here's a link to the forum: http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/28162-house-of-moto-22/

I'm not sure on that. I was on the stock rom to begin with but I had removed some bloat (thought I had backups for everything but I guess not) and after restoring it all it wouldn't install. Tried it twice to no avail. Then just grabbed the KK update zip file and RSD'ed it over and it was done in about 5-10 min. Phone was running slow while Google Play went and downloaded updates for all my apps but it's running beautifully now.

Yes, as long it's the same or a newer system version you're flashing: You can restore your version, you can upgrade it to a newer one, but to downgrade the bootloader has to be unlocked.

Truth be told, I never tried to downgrade from KitKat, so maybe there's something different now, but I believe it works, just as a downgrade from JB to ICS.
