Searched this forum and couldn't find an answer. On the galaxy S3 you could go to app manager, delete data, and remove the preinstalled bookmarks, doesn't seem to work on the note 3. None of the bookmark manager apps work either. Is this a root only option now? Anyone successfully removed them without root? I have no problem rooting mine, but my wife doesn't want to on hers, but the bookmarks drive her nuts.
Thanks in advance

Hopefully someone can answer but I have run into issues with using the old method of removing the bookmarks by editing the browser.db with SQLite located in /data/data/com.android.browser/databases/. The db name and location has changed though in 4.3 tmo note 3. Now the new database "SBrowser.db" is located at /data/data/com.sec.android.app.sbrowser/databases.
The old method does not work anymore at least for me. You can delete the bookmarks from the database but they still remain in tthe stock browser.
I encountered a similar issue with regard to the presidential alerts. Where editing the mms prefs xml was successful but upon reboot the setting went back to the old value.
Seems there is some file integrity checking going on somewhere. Just a newb so dont know fo sho.

Want to keep this thread alive. I've got root and still can't find an easy way to wipe out these bookmarks.
Not sure if it will work without a data wipe, but you can set those bookmarks as editable in I think the customer.xml in /system/csc/
If you delete PartnerBookmarksprovider.apk it deletes the annoying stock bookmarks.

Editing the XML file worked! You have to find the tags in the xml file <bookmark> delete the <bookmark></bookmark> and everything in between them. There is tag for each bookmark. Then copy the file back to your /system/csc directory. After editing you have to go into the app settings in Application Manager and wipe the Data & Cashe for the Internet Browser. You will loss all bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords, etc. but once done you'll have non of the preloaded bookmarks, only what you add. Long live opensource:good::highfive:

Thanks, this method works perfectly... But...
If you dont want to delete your browsers cache and data,
you can just change the string on every link from :
<Editable>no</Editable> to <Editable>yes</Editable>
Then, restart your phone and you can delete or edit the factory links.
This worked for me
I am rooted and neither technique work for me. I am having permission problems and can't take control of the file.
How did you get the correct permissions?

Deleting pre-installed bookarks on GS3 4.3
If you want to delete those pre-installed bookmarks from your Galaxy S3 4.3 that seem glued to Android, get yourself a root browser, aswell as having actual root access, doesn't matter which one aslong as it has 'mount read-write' support. eg, FX file explorer, or even ES file explorer. I'm sure there are others. Anyways...Go to System/root>csc>Customer.xml....Open the xml file, and look for the first line of BookmarkName>, and look for anything that says <Editable>no</Editable> and change tham all to <Editable>yes</Editable> Close, and save changes.
After that, open up Settings>Application manager>All, then open up 'Internet', and clear cache, and data(Important), close, and restart your phone(Important).
Now you will be able to remove those bookmarks. Follow this to the letter, and it will definatey work.
*Deleting the strings between </bookmarks> and <bookmarks> will not work, they will be re-created upon startup. It used to work before 4.3 update, but not now. The only changes that persist in the file change of customer.xml IS changing from 'no' to 'yes'.
Prior to CF-Auto-Root, the TWEAKED mod, and the XPosed framework with a couple-three of their thingies installed, I don't recall ever trying the long press. Being unable to delete those WRETCHED PRE-INSTALLED BOOKMARKS via checkbox method in the app was the only thing, THE ONLY THING holding me back from using it fully.
Well, wham. I've long-pressed them since then and just chose delete.

I am trying to change certain images for my XDA premium app but I cannot seem to get my version to install...
I am backing up via "My Backup Root", then placing the modified images in the drawable-hdpi folder inside the app WHILE my SD card is mounted on my computer. I am overwriting all of them (using the same names and keeping the sizes the same). And then I tried installing the modified version through ES file explorer in the my backup root folder, no dice. Then I tried installing it by restoring a backup via my Backup root, but no matter what, my XDA App will not install with the modified images. I am using 7zip to replace images.
So you need to find a way to backup a non-system application while still being able to edit it?
Have you tried going straight into data and pulling the app with ADB? Using Super Manager, Root Explorer or ES?
Hell maybe you have resign it!
If you want to send over the files I'd love to play with it.
How would I pull it using adb pull? I've got ES File Explorer, but it's a non system app.
Using root explorer goto data/app and copy the apk to sdcard. Put sdcard in your pc and pull the apk and modifie. Then install
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
In ES there is a root explorer right?
Go into settings and at the bottom are root options. Enable them.
Then click the SD button at the top left hand corner and you should see your phones root folder. Then data -> app and find the XDA application. Long press and select copy, then paste it to your SD card. it will be named something like com.somethingXDA.apk, or net.somethingXDA.apk, or even org.somethingXDA.apk.
Also try renaming your MyBackup modifyed file to its actual filename. So for example "SetCPU" to "com.mhuang.overclocking.apk" or "XDAPremiumApp" to "com.somethingXDA.apk". I know for some Swype mods you had to do that.
This is my first time using ES File explorer! And I really like it!
I don't understand, I did exactly as Mystery said, and app still not installed. For some odd reason, my edited .png files are smaller less kbs than the original APK. Does changing colors only alter data size?

You have to put it in /system/app now, because modifying the APK's contents in any way will invalidate the signature. You could also resign it, but it won't update.
Ok, I'm getting farther and farther, but how do I fix the permissions to paste it in System/App? It's a non system app, shouldn't it be copied into Data/app?

Im not sure how to do it in es , but in root explorer you long press the app and click permissions and put checks in all three of the first column and just the top one in the 2nd column and leve the rest unchecked. Its ok to put it in system/app.

I'll give Root Explorer a try.
Are you decompiling it or just opening it via 7zip and swapping images?? If you aren't decompiling then the signature is fine to run, but not install.. just put it in /data/app.. permissions won't matter.. if you are decompiling, that's a different story.

Bad flash do it again... I had the same issue updated everything and nothing helped til I rebooted wiped and reflashed rom.
Or try to install superuser and see what happens
I was reading somewhere that if you restore a backup the permissions or something get screwy and the only known fix is to re-flash the rom. it sucks

Remember, you can't delete a file that is IN USE, ie; system files. You need to freeze/disable them first THEN delete them! Watch what you delete though, some files are needed, some files that you least suspect, and will cause problems if you delete them.

I'm experiencing something similar.
I have root on stock os but recovered from nandroid.
I can create folders, files, rename, edit text etc on some directories, yet I am unable for others.
I am trying to undrestand if this is because of
1) Nandroid backup
2) files are in use and I cannot edit or create folders in those directories?
I am trying to create folders and edit files in the /sys directory.

Are you using the 'Root Explorer' app to do this? If not, I suggest you get that from the Play store first. Secondly, make sure the "root privileges" are enabled in Superuser for the app.
If you have already done what I mentioned and still occur problems, may I ask what folders in the 'sys directory' you are trying to change? As majority of the files/folders you are seeing in that folder are there for a reason and named accordingly for your phone to utilize that directory and keep the phone working.

i was trying to change or create a new folder for the CPU states because my cpu spy wasn't reading any cpu states (which is another problem im facing).
1) With root privileges am I suppose to be able to create folders in any directory? I seem to be able to create/rename/edit files only in some directories. I seem to have the option to mount as r/o and r/w only on certain folders. The other folders defaulted to mount as r/w. I've also changed permission on the folders as well.

Unless you know the exact name and which sub-directory to place the folders to link with the apps you have mentioned, I suggest you do not add or modify anything.
The apps such as CPU Spy utilizes your phones kernel to determine what your usage is. What kernel are you using for your phone? Maybe flashing a new one would help.
I'll look in to the issue more and post any other solutions if I find any. Good luck!

1) I understand that its not too safe to mess around anyhting in that directory. But.....can regular rooted users with RE edit that folder? If so, its a problem I'm experiencing. If not, then probably because that folder is in use. When I enter /sys, its mounted as r/w but there is no option for me to change it to r/o.

I've never needed to use CPU Spy as SetCPU is more than enough, so I apologize if for not being able to answer that question. It just seems like a compatibility issue with what you are currently using, nothing for you to be worried about.
So here is my problem.
When using my hotspot on my Win8 computer, it wont let me click through certain webpages like cashback websites like bigcrumbs and ebates and gets stuck on the redirection pages like "anrdoezrs.net" when tranfering me to a specific website. It won't fuly transfer me through to the store I want to gain cashback at.
I recently got the new computer with Win8 on it. Now that I have have tried my hotspot on multiple Win8 computers with it not working, I'm assuming it must be the problem. It ran perfectly with Win7 beforehand.
I am currently running [ROM]Phantom's Blazer Rom[Yo][8/2/12][v0.1.5][FF18]
I did notice on the tethering options of my phone that it did not list that it supported Win8. (Yet it does work for mostly all of the websites except the ones I'm speaking of).
Is there a way to fix my problem with the Rom version I'm running right now? (I know its a little outdated).
Do I need to update to a newer version of the Blazer rom? Or should I get a different rom?
(I need to have a rom that has the 4g hacked hotspot and it need to be able to be used with my PS3 for online gaming as well).
Thanks for listening

What TD meant, a root browser that will properly read the root directory. Some file browsers fail at that.

Seriously though, it's a text file. Just delete it or delete its contents.
Also, I believe using your phone as a hotspot without paying for it is violating your TOS. It's a good way to get kicked off the network.
Howdy folks -
I started with the modified-to-be-expandable PopupBrowser.apk found here and added/modded it a bit further. I reset a number of the layout dimension xml stuffs back to stock UVALL4/UVALK8 values, edited some smali stuff so the expanding states "fit" a little better (so minimized doesn't cut off the title bar, mid-size state is about the same as the size when you first open the popup browser, and large-size state fills up a bit more of the screen), and set it up so that when wanting to "popout" the content in the popup browser into a "full" browser it will look for Chrome first - if Chrome isn't installed, it'll point to the stock (given similarity of package names this should be either stock TW or AOSP) browser. FWIW I originally put this together for inclusion in a rom I put together... just putting that out there
Anyhoo - here it is
md5: DBAB8033D6041B39D664F0A1F175DB02
Let me know if there are any problems
NOTE: If odexed the zip should move /system/app/PopupBrowser.odex to /system/app/PopupBrowser.odex.bak
This looks great! Can't wait to give it a try!

I'm confused - when does it say application not installed? What are the errors exactly (the wording I mean)? After you deleted PopupBrowser.apk from /system/app did you reflash the zip from the OP? A possible issue could have been the popup browser already installed was slightly different in its name (if this was true it was likely a case issue) - what are you running? I can edit the updater-script to remove other similar-but-different-casing apks if this is what was going on.

Ah - I see. The zip is in a format so you can flash it in a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc.). The apk itself cannot be installed via the package manager route (which is why you were having the problem), if you aren't going to use a recovery then you need to push/copy the apk itself into /system/app. Basically you need to set /system/app/ as rw so you can copy stuff into it, copy the apk into it, and (for good measure) set the permissions on PopupBrowser.apk to rw-r--r-- (or 644 if you use a terminal or something similar). Then you should be good to go. It's totally up to you on how you want to go about it. Lemme know (whether in this thread or via PM) if you have any questions.
I don't think this interested many, but I updated the OP - it should work for odexed folks now as well

I just found it and spent a while looking at pop-up browser options. It's awesome man...smaller title bar, shrinkable to view more of the background app.
I did have issues resizing it (bottom right corner of the pop-up window). It doesn't seem to allow me to resize. I can press the "expand" button or whatever it is in the title bar which will enlarge the window but only vertically.
I have the DPI of my phone set to 220 so maybe that's it?

Resizing in that sense is not supported unfortunately - it's just the ability for 3 stages of "height" more or less.

Here ya go.
Hello
If anyone can help me- I'm running Magazine UX rom and ran a couple others like s tab for note. Anyway, I found the hancom office apk file in my root explorer, extracted them, moved them to system app folder corrected permissions, then installed. After doing so I cannot find it anywhere but back in root explorer. Can anyone tell me how to get this on a screen , open and finally use?
Thanks
Why go through the trouble of moving them into /system and setting permissions? Have you tried just installing them like normal apps?
Also, which APKs are you using? You need the shared component and the viewers and/or the editors.

Hi hopefully I can explain this correctly… I found all the hancom apk files in one pf the previpus roms (s tab) in the root explorer. I know that to get an apk to work, it has to be put in the system/app folder and the permissions have to be changed to rw rr or whatever it is to match all the others in the folder. After doing so, extracting all of them and trying to open, the only one that finally appeared in my apps was hancom office viewer. The other 4 had 'done' for an option buttom unlike the viewer which also had 'open'. When I hit the open buttom I get the touchwhiz error. Anyway, heres spme pictures- I am beginning to thinks its this magazine ux rom that Im using. What is your opinion of all this and what rom do you use?
