Deactivate phone - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Just got a sprint s3 off Craigslist and its still activated what can i do?
http://baltimore.craigslist.org/sys/4113179852.html

Call sprint.

Be careful with phones on craigslist. You can try transferring the phone to your account, but I believe the original account holder is still responsible for taking his account off of the phone. For security measures, Sprint may contact the account holder of the phone to see if it is lost or stolen first, and if the guy really wants to screw you over, then he can say that, yes, the phone was lost/stolen, and it will blacklist the serial number of that phone. Now he has your money, and you don't have a phone.
If they guy is nice, he'll work it out with Sprint to deactivate his account, and you'll be set.
In short, if you're doing a craigslist deal, next time, meet with him in a Sprint store, and ask the Sprint employee to make sure that the ESN is good before paying him the money. Otherwise, it's easy to get scammed.

When i bought the phone i just checked to see that it works, and later i realized that it was getting text messages and the data was working, and i called sprint and they said i have to hand it in at a sprint store... Which I'm for sure not gonna do since i paid for the phone. The thing is i think the person i bought it from stole it. (we met at dunkin donuts and he seemed pretty shady)

Hate to be the one to say it. But if it is stolen you are out of luck. The Device is no longer viable on Sprint. If it is stolen, it will most likely be reported soon. Then it will be deactivated from the Network, and have a Bad ESN ( Stolen / Lost / Other ) . Next time I suggest following the advice given by metayoshi. Meet the seller at a Sprint store. That way you are safer. Also if you ever want to check out the ESN on Device before purchasing it. You can use THIS SITE. It's free .

I texted the guy I bought the phone from that if he doesn't get the phone deactivated I'll report his phone number to the police
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 4

This girl called me today claiming the phone was her sisters and she has lots of money so she bought another phone and she forgot to deactivate the old one... So i was like how about she calls sprint and tells them that she wants it deactivated since i can't use unless she does that, and she said she'll try to make that happen today or tomorrow...
Yay! Perfect condition gs3 for 100$ and some pain in the ass

Question about buying phones from bestbuy...

My wife just told me that she's eligible for two more lines of service on her sprint account. So I decided to list my new Evo 4G and New Evo Shift in the Market for sell ..hint hint! Anyways, I was thinking about getting either the Nexus S only because its $49.99 online at bestbuy or the Evo 3D. However, for some strange reason Bestbuy online will not let me add a line of service online. Apparently, I have to go to the actual store. Now, with the account being in my wife's name would I have any problems opening a new line of service without her being there with me?
I mean, I have the passcode to the account and all that information. When we have problem, I'm the one that calls sprint not her. I also upgraded her line for her a couple of months ago at the sprint store without her presence and had no issues. But i never did it at Bestbuy. I'm hoping they let me open the line.
I plan to tryout the Nexus and hold off on the Evo for a couple of weeks to see if it has any issues at release. If it doesn't or if the issues are minor, I'll exchange the Nexus for the evo.
From what i understand you cannot do anything without the account holder with you. You mighy be able to have them call her from the store to have her ok it. Hope this helps.

That's a lie, yes he can get the new phones as long as he has access to make changes to the account..
If he knows the security code and her last 4 digits of his wifes SS# he's good to go..
Correct, as long as you have her Social, obviously her full name and phone number, and the Sprint 6-8 digit Passcode, you should be good to go.
you should be fine. I used to do that when I was on my mom's VZW account back when I was 18. as long as you have the passcode, last for of SSN, name and address...you'll be able to access the account. also...make sure that deal isnt online only....sometimes the store dont honor their online prices

No loop hole. That ESN is locked until the delinquent account is paid.

can he call and switch his esn? without having to pay his whole balance?
Call in from a land line, I thinks its 800sprint1. Tell um you bought it off ebay and cant get your money back, cause your old phone broke they should let it slide. Make sure they dont know it was your friend. If the say no tell um they to help you with this cause you wont have anyway to use your phone. Worst case threaten to switch to verizon.
I used to work for sprint years ago its sad they seem to always forget that without our business they would be no where. Good luck!

That's not gonna work, ESN is locked to the delinquent account and the button to remove it is blanked out. Only a payment will allow you to go in and remove the ESN. Sad that people still think threatening to cancel will allow retention's to waive a magic wand and fix everything. You'll just get transferred to a supervisor to be told no again.

I'm sorry, you think its sad that Sprint locks esns for phones on delinquent accounts(like every other carrier out there)?
Can you imagine the abuse? Just go start a bunch of new accounts, buy phones and then let them go delinquent and sell the phones...how about not.
Whining and threatening you're going to switch isn't going to change an industry wide policy.
Correct. Industry wide. Verizon's policy as well. Pay the bill for him or something if you want it that bad.

You say that he is "letting his account go past due," does this mean that his phone is still active?
If his phone is still active, and not yet past due to the point that his account is shut off, then do an ESN swap before his account is shut off...then when it is shut off, the other phone will be blacklisted and not the EVO.
...
As others said, there is another way. If you don't know what it is, we won't tell you.
...
He's past due 160 and temporarily disconnected until its paid off. So I guess there's no way around it. I wish someone would say what the "other way" is. I thought there was a way to reprogram the number yourself through ##menus. Or is that old school?

Past due $160 or 160 days? If it is just past due $160, and its a short amount of time, maybe a small or partial payment will get the phone turned back on?
What you are speaking of with the ## menus is only a part of the "other" way.
Basically, the ## is how you manually program your phone. To manually program your phone, you need the MSL (Master Subsidy Lock)...Sprint usually calls it "a six-digit code". Lets suppose that yours is 000000 (trust me it really isn't), then you will program it with ##000000#, you can manually program data with ##DATA# (you again will need your MSL.)
That portion, we can tell you on this forum. This information will not help the situation, as your ESN is blacklisted. If and when you get Sprint to lift the blacklist on the ESN, you can manually program the phone if you desire with those ## codes. (there is no real point, unless it does not correctly provision itself.)
This forum, and many others have a prohibition on instruction people how to perform ESN Cloning. Some try to whitewash it by calling it an ESN Repair, which in most cases does not make sense. I have never seen a phone that truly needed and ESN to be repaired. Out of curiosity, have any of you phone techs out there actually seen an ESN that really needed a true repair? (By true repair, I mean, NOT to get it to work on another network?)

He could call in and swap esn to an older phone. He could say "i would like to swap esn to an older phone cause EVO is broken and i dont want the $10 add on to keep adding up." He could also put his line on seasonal suspend which will look like he's trying to at least reduce his monthly bill to hopefully pay it off. He should do that anyway. It's only $8.99/mo (or somewhere in that range, can't remember exactly).

Both of your scenarios wont work. The first wont work, because THAT evo's esn is still blacklisted until the bill is paid, it doesnt matter what phone you switch your line to. And your second, same thing, even if he puts it on suspend, when he renews it, it's still blacklisted.
I agree... ESN Swapping can be risky. and once it get blacklisted thats it to my knowledge.
A lot has changed since I last worked at Sprint. Maybe that's why our site was #1 in fraud. I just did what o was told and I know i swapped a phone on an overdue account. Guess that's why I don't work their anymore. LOL.

Sprint and Me

Ok, So I am incredibly unsatisfied with Sprint's service as of late. I purchased the Epic 4g Touch and experienced the dreaded "Loss Of Service" bug frequently. I was within my 14 day return limit so I went into the Visalia California Sprint Store to swap out for a different model (namely the Evo 3d which I traded in for the e4gt). I also signed 5 of my friends up with sprint as well and 2 of them got the e4gt and had the same exact issues. They convinced me to try a replacement and assured me that if it still experienced that bug I could return it within 14 days of receiving the replacement phone. The replacement phone was worse than the one I had originally and lost service every hour. I missed several calls from work leaving my employer under the impression I was angry and ignoring her and almost cost me my job. So I went in to the Visalia California store yet again to get a replacement model. I spoke with the same woman that convinced me to get the replacement model (She was also the manager) and she stated that the device was out of its 14 days since the FIRST device and that I couldn't get a different model (see what she did there?). So I went home and called Sprint off of another line and spent 4 hours total on hold. I hung up and called Sprint tech support and after running tests and walking me through updates and such the rep spoke with a manager on his end and concluded that I needed a different model of phone. He stated that he would note that down in the ticket and to go into the Visalia California store and they would give me a different model. So I went in to the store and spoke with the manager yet again. This time after reading the ticket she became rude and uncivil stating that the ticket says "customer needs to try a different model of phone" and that they didn't have to provide it for me and that even if it did, corporate cannot make them give me a different model. The whole time I was civil and polite but my frustration was building. I drove an hour to the Sprint store in Fresno only to find out that Visalia had to handle my case and that they could not even replace it with the same model. So I found a man on craigslist and traded it for a Nexus S 4g. I plan on paying out my contract asap and switching to Verizon. They know how to treat a customer.
/End rant/
Call account services, and speak with a manager. They should be able to escalate a claim. Or at least do something more for you.

Account services was the first call I made. they would transfer and drop me. This literally happened 12 times.
Wow that's crazy. Sprint is actually really cool here and if there's notes on your account the corporate store will always honor what they tell you on the phone. They even replaced an Evo with a bad speaker that my buddy had bought at an "authorized retailer" AFTER his 30 days were up.
I'd fight them so hard on this. Look for any sites that rate local businesses and flame that chick like there's no tomorrow. Also threaten and follow up with a complaint to the BBB. You don't have to take that treatment from anyone.

Yeah probably a little late since you traded for a nexus. You could have at least sold the e4gt to pay the early termination fees and just left sprint.

Wait what the hell? Verizon and AT&T both limit your data now? WTF I cant do that God they are sooo lucky I need a phone. So I get a choice between sh*tty customer service and sh*tty cellphone service... I can't live in this world anymore

Not your typical situation with a phone from craigslist

I did a search, and at this point I still don't know what to do..
In April I bought a close to brand new S2 off a guy from craigslist. He seemed like a professional type in every aspect, so I wasn't worried too much about being screwed. I bought the phone only and nothing else as he didn't have the box or anything for it. On my way home I noticed that it still works, I could call/ go on the internet. He told me to just do a hard reset and I could get it working in my name... (This is my 1st smartphone and used phone transaction, I was stupid not to thoroughly go through everything).
Fast forward to today almost 3 months later, I haven't had time to tinker with it as I've been overseas for a while and just got back. The phone still works 100%, not bricked or anything and I did use it to surf the web after I bought it. (I used wifi overseas as well if it matters).
I don't know if its stolen, or the seller is just such a [email protected]$$ that he never disconnected it from service and doesn't realize he's still paying for it.
Can I disconnect it from Sprint without the seller's information?
Since it hasn't been bricked so far, I'd like to try to root it/ use it in my name and hope that it hasn't been stolen and it wont get bricked on me.
Suggestions? Thanks.
If it's still working then it's tired to an account and until it's removed they won't hook it up from my experience. Anytime you but one you should have the esn checked. As far as stolen or lost or they didn't pay the bill that has nothing to do with bricking it. That's only during flashing and such and if you follow the directions the dev. Leave you, you should have no problems.you can call Sprint and see what they say I had a friend who bought a phone at the flea market and it was still tired to a commercial account and they released the esn. Depends on the person at Sprint I guess. Other wise you can have it flashed for boost our others etc. Good luck

I'm a little confused, they way you worded it I'm interpreting it as if Sprint wouldn't agree to release the ESN- I can flash it and that will disconnect it from Sprint?
Thats a good idea though, I'll wait a bit to see if anyone else suggests anything else and hopefully get this resolved.
Thanks.

Flash to Boost Mobile, they had 4G too, is a good service and cheap, no contract.:good:
Sorry about the wording didn't proof read and using a new Swype and it changed a few words lol. Basically if it's reported lost, stolen, on an account that was shut off due to no payment or still on an active account they tag the esn as being "bad". Sprint says they won't release a esn in those cases but I was there as a friend told a sad story to the rep over the phone about how he bought it at a flea market because he was having surgery etc. The rep said the phone was tied to an active commercial account but sent a message to someone above them and got the esn cleared. I haven't heard of that happening much but it maybe worth a try. And if all else fails or you just want to, you can have it flashed to boost.

I would recommend flashing the phone to boost mobile, virgin mobile, or page plus if you cant get the esn released. I have my epic touch running on virgin mobile for $25 bucks a month. Talk about a sweet phone for a crazy good deal. It helps me fight the upgrade bug from upgrading to the galaxy siii lol. Yeah my data doesnt work that great most of the time but never have a problem with talk and text.
Thanks gents, I'll give Sprint a call and see what they say.
sprint will not release it, I've bought more than one Craigslist phone that had this problem and have never had success getting help from sprint.... and before you guys wonder what's wrong with me if I actually want it to work I meet at a sprint store to confirm clean esn... if the price is low enough though I don't care cause I'll just play with it for a week or two then sell it on eBay for twice what I paid bad esn and all

Offer to ship internationally, you'll get at least an extra 50 out of it and usps flat rate envelopes are like 17 to anywhere in the world... on topic though I know people have got past due balance esns cleared after 90 days (ie once sprint sells the account to collections) but if it still shows as attached to another account sprint won't do anything no matter what

Can anyone help me out with this? Also if I flash to boost, do I have to get their Android plan? Thanks.

It looks like I'll be using that, long road ahead of me
Can anyone confirm that this is proper method? Or is there anything else? Thanks.

Upgrade issue!

Well I bought the gs3 with my account but now that the note2 is out I want to have that phone. My mom is due for an upgrade and I thought I can give her my gs3 and then buy the note2 on her upgrade (different accounts) but they told m no because its not on the same account and if the phone its not on her act for 24hrs they will charge her fullretail price. Is this true? If so, what can be done? Because I want that phone.
Thanks!

Which wireless carrier do you use?
I did almost the same thing with Sprint to get mine. I'm on a family acct though. Used my brother's upgrade and got it activated on my number because my upgrade wasn't due for a while. They let me do it no problems. But being on different accounts might make a difference why that won't let you do it.

Get it on her upgrade, activate and let her use it for a couple days, then swap and give her the gs3. It may be easier if you have a spare older phone laying around that you could swap with your gs3 to free up the gs3's esn. That way when you swap with your mother, they won't see that it's attached to your account. You should even be able to do the esn swap on sprints website if you were to do it that way and you would not even have to call. If I am remembering right, I am pretty sure I have done this before for myself.

Thanks for the reply!
Well finally its done, I went to other store and then eve swap it for me. Apparently the other guy was new and had to ask the store manager and she refuse to do the swap and she even told me she was going to put a warning on the acct. Anyway I went to other store, bought the phone, swap it to my acct and walk out with it. No problem whatsoever. Now I'm the new owner of the note2  :victory:
I guess it depends on the person who you talk to.

I've found that too with Sprint stores it definitely depends on who you talk to... Glad you got it, enjoy it's one amazing device dc
