I'm a former iphone user that just picked up the Note 2 (on Rogers, model SGH-1317M) to use as a digital sketchbook. I rather enjoyed my iphone, but I was intrigued by some of the drawings i had seen created on the Note 2. So far, from my initial experience with the Note 2 i'm happy with the results using Sketchbook Express, and the free version of Infinite Painter (although infinite painter also seems VERY buggy).
So now i want to take the next step and install the tablet versions of Sketchbook Pro, Sketchbook Ink and Photoshop Touch. From what i understand i need to root my device to do this. I do not have an android tablet (i have an ipad which i''m happy with) so I can not side-load these apps. Is my only recourse to DL the apps from a torrent (or other similar source) or is there a way to get it from the developer? I read something about using the amazon marketplace to DL apps?
Since it seems I'm going to have to root my Note 2 is there instructions to do it via a mac? (yes, i'm an apple guy) or would it be safer to seek out a friend with a PC? Is there any custom ROMs that people would recommend? Keep in mind my primary concern is drawing so these custom ROMs should not affect the S pen functionality.
Thanks in advance for any and all responses.
Hey there! I Don't know how much help this will be but my note 2 is rooted with the jedi master ROM and it has no effect on the S pen. I have sketchbook pro installed and it works very well.

thanks. what are the benefits of using the Jedi Master ROM? Any particular reason you went with that ROM over others out there?
Not really. I'm a die hard star wars fan so that's what drew to it and I have no complaints about it. I think mine is jedi master 12, not sure. I would recommend the work of deviant development though, they are the ones responsible for the jedi master roms and they are good at what they do.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
I guess that's as good a reason as any . i'll have to look into that developers work. I'll have to research other ROMs and decide what's best for myself.
Its best to use a PC to root your device using ODIN. There are many methods to go about using sketching apps in tablet mod. My best approach would be to either try out a ROM that supports tablet mod such as Moon ROM or switch to AOSP based ROM such as ProBAM as you won't have any issues reducing the DPI. Also with aosp, just like touchwiz, you can fully use the spen along with its pressure sensitivities. I use sketchbook mobile running on ProBam and it works perfectly.

Thanks for the reply. Can you clarify if you're running sketchbook Pro rather than mobile? I'm not sure if it was just a mistake in your post. Mobile will run on phones no problem, it's the pro version that I'm looking to get onto the note. I'm also looking to get the sketchbook Ink app and tablet Photoshop touch app onto it.
If the ROM I place on the note supports tablet mode will I be able to download tablet apps directly from the play store? Or do I still have to try to sideload them?

I personally like all the extras that touch wiz has added on THIS phone. Normally I would run pure stock but I'm happy with this phone out of the box. It helps that everything I don't need or use I can go in and disable and not worry about it running or using ram. I'm personally stock, not rooted and content. First phone ever that I didn't feel the need to root. Just my opinion.

Exactly, I already own Gnex and N7. I'm fully aware of what AOSP roms are capable of. No way I want any of those roms installed on my Note 2. I bought this because I wanted all those features that's tied into Spen. This phone would be very bad without the stock features. If I wanted stock experience, I would've waited for Nexus 4 or stayed with my Gnex. I've been rom hopping for last 2 years and now I just want something that's good enough.
I have to admit, it becomes like an addiction. I would be looking for new roms and rom updates constantly everyday.

There are cherrypicks you can do with AOKP right now that gives apparently full functionality to the S-Pen.

Naah I like the stock ROM and its features and stock Android will never have Wi-Fi calling which is something I must have with work so I'll never put it on this phone
Wifi calling is great but it's voice is a dinosaur.
I'm using the multi window rom and installed 4.2 Gapps.
Used the 4.2 launcher then switched to Go for the eye candy. Still maintain the S-pen while having 4.2 camera, gallery, ect AND sCal, sGallery and others.
Battery seems to be on par with stock Touchwiz, 40% after 15.5 hours, and 2.5hours screen time.
Still not sure how useful multi window is but I do agree Paranoid and the note2 were meant to be together.
first phone that im actually keeping stock!!! Phone runs smooth and with no problems.... aosp and aokp just seem.......pretty boring now. I do wish to have the nexus navigation on screen bar.
For the advanced users(we know who we are) AOSP will be great I can't wait. It's pointless now a days to not have AOSP it's best to start clean then add what you want free up all the space/ram and have the latest updates. I came from S3 and wanted the quad core, 5.5, and RGB s-pen can stay docked for all I care. When it comes it will be great!

No. The were added as the original note got support for aokp, once aokp (which cmenard is currently working on) is available for our device that functionality could be added, if it hasn't been merged by then.

I can't take it anymore! I'm sick and tired of waiting for multi view update. This is absolutely ludicrous how we were the first US carrier with the Note 2 and the last with the update. So u know what? I rooted my phone today and loaded the Jedi Rom with multi view on it. At first I was one of those that wanted to keep everything stock, as I truly love this phone. It had everything I wanted except for the multi view. Im so glad I did this! Now I have multi view with all the apps. Awesome! This has truly opened up so many more possibilities. The only downfall at the moment is wifi calling. But I can live without.
So what say u dear fellow Note 2 owners? Are u guys tired of waiting or do u have extreme patience and are happy as Is?

I'm coming to same conclusion..will likely order by Thursday for Friday delivery & install Jedi ROM Saturday..
How much time should a noob set aside to: root, install Jedi X ROM & are you considering Perseus kernel for exfat?
I've got link instructions for root & Jedi X install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34900851&postcount=33 but what about installing Perseus kernel?
Probably would have bought the T-Mobile Note2 weeks ago if it had multi-view (but this ROM looks better than what T-Mobile will come up with)

Do you lose Spen functionality and / or Spen apps such as snote , drawing ect , Sbeam or say ability to swipe your hand over the proximity sensor to see the time and date on a sleeping device? Or any other note / note 2 exclusive features in jedi x romS?

Maybe root for the sake of a rooted installation of Avast Anti Theft.
Maybe root and recovery to flash an OC kernel.

Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
Personally, I don't feel the need to really make any modifications to the software on my Note II - it works well enough out of the box that I will more than likely leave it stock and unrooted. Battery life is amazing thus far, moderate usage today and barely put a so much as a dent in it (which is a big difference over my S III, which I could run down in a matter of a few hours depending on what I was doing).
I myself thought I was going to have an issue with touchwiz due to coming from various HTC devices as well as a few vanilla android handsets. However, this device has been amazing. I did root it as I have a few apps that need said access but as far as a custom rom, no need.

Typically ill root a device to
flash a version of Android that isn't currently offered directly by the OEM, or simply to overclock a slower device. I'm ecstatic over this device as it is - stock.

Hi, I've never done anything with Android. I recently received a Galaxy Note 8.0 as a gift and I want to install stock android (i.e. Nexus 7). Can anyone here either explain the steps I will need to go through or point me in the right direction? Is this even possible?
Since I've never done any Android rooting, I don't exactly understand much of the lingo used here. If someone could say "to put stock Android on a Galaxy Note 8.0, you need to use X and X" that would be great. I can probably figure it out from there.
Thanks!
Do you realise that if you did this, then the pen would no longer function? And this is the feature that you have paid the premium price for.

If there was CM/AOSP/AOKP ROM for Note 8, the pen would probably work - it does on those ROMs for e.g. Note 1.
But all the stock apps don't work there - no S-Notes, S-Calendar etc.
Anyway, if I'm not wrong, no such ROM yet - so far development forum contains two modifications of stock ROM.
There are other options for those apps in the play store, they are fairly good options too. That being said, I'm sure it is quite a task to bring AOSP to this device as we barely have working recoveries at this point.

Absolutely yes (e.g. Papyrus), but each thread of non-stock ROMs is filled with questions on "how to have TW apps working here", and the answer is always "can't be done".

This here is your best bet if you want any solid pen functionality. The reason the apps wont work with aosp is because the s pen relies heavily on tw framework. Its difficult and fairly redundant to port if over to a aosp rom. Im working on an up to date version of the rom i used to maintain on the att gn2 but havent had much time do much but itll bring.a.fair.amount of aosp apps when its complete.

did you get them to work
@lorjay589
I found this post by the doc under the international note 2 version for note 3 apps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532655 i tried to install it but it wouldn't boot (worth a try right?) I think what is throwing it off is the modified framework res.apk, which is made for the international note 2. Is there any way to port the framework modification over to our device? If its too much work dont worry about it. you have definitely done enough already
Thanks man

i was looking at that, and alot of the png's are missing in ours for airview and other things, ill see what i can do
I'm downloading the Sky Note rom for 7105 (AT&T) now. It has all the Note 3 features except the camera I believe. Then there's a guide on how to patch it under development. However, I'm downloading it over tether, so if any other brave souls out there want to use a better connection (currently showing an hour left for me) to grab it and give it a go, I'd be grateful.
Edit: After reading through the thread concerning the patching, I found that the Sky Note rom for VZN doesn't work at all, so now I'm not wanting to try. Can't really afford a new device right now.
Tried it. Got to the Google experience boot and them looped though it was easy to just wipe and reload synergy
