Installing stock Android on a Galaxy Note 8.0 - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hi, I've never done anything with Android. I recently received a Galaxy Note 8.0 as a gift and I want to install stock android (i.e. Nexus 7). Can anyone here either explain the steps I will need to go through or point me in the right direction? Is this even possible?
Since I've never done any Android rooting, I don't exactly understand much of the lingo used here. If someone could say "to put stock Android on a Galaxy Note 8.0, you need to use X and X" that would be great. I can probably figure it out from there.
Thanks!

Do you realise that if you did this, then the pen would no longer function? And this is the feature that you have paid the premium price for.

It's possible but are you sure you are really wanting to do this? It will remove all the pen functionality from the device which is what the device is most noted for. Just out of curiosity, what are you wanting to achieve? A cleaner or leaner ROM?

I hadn't thought of that. I don't really need the pen anyway. But how could I get a leaner ROM (get rid of TouchWiz) and still use the pen?

What are you expecting to get out of rooting?

You might want to just use a different launcher if you hate touchwiz so much... if you are this new to Android, I would strongly suggest you don't try any ROM fiddling.

But there is S-Pen Add On available for CM/AOKP/AOSP.

So, why not?

If there was CM/AOSP/AOKP ROM for Note 8, the pen would probably work - it does on those ROMs for e.g. Note 1.
But all the stock apps don't work there - no S-Notes, S-Calendar etc.
Anyway, if I'm not wrong, no such ROM yet - so far development forum contains two modifications of stock ROM.

There are other options for those apps in the play store, they are fairly good options too. That being said, I'm sure it is quite a task to bring AOSP to this device as we barely have working recoveries at this point.

Absolutely yes (e.g. Papyrus), but each thread of non-stock ROMs is filled with questions on "how to have TW apps working here", and the answer is always "can't be done".

This here is your best bet if you want any solid pen functionality. The reason the apps wont work with aosp is because the s pen relies heavily on tw framework. Its difficult and fairly redundant to port if over to a aosp rom. Im working on an up to date version of the rom i used to maintain on the att gn2 but havent had much time do much but itll bring.a.fair.amount of aosp apps when its complete.

Yeah im sick of looking in task manager and seeing all the crap running even after i removed bloatware. Mfgs really screw up the android experience. Cant wait for a stock android based rom.
I personally like all the extras that touch wiz has added on THIS phone. Normally I would run pure stock but I'm happy with this phone out of the box. It helps that everything I don't need or use I can go in and disable and not worry about it running or using ram. I'm personally stock, not rooted and content. First phone ever that I didn't feel the need to root. Just my opinion.

I love aosp and aokp, but in Galaxy Nexus. Why would i use that when i loose all functionality of S-pen? When i don't have true multitasking?

Exactly, I already own Gnex and N7. I'm fully aware of what AOSP roms are capable of. No way I want any of those roms installed on my Note 2. I bought this because I wanted all those features that's tied into Spen. This phone would be very bad without the stock features. If I wanted stock experience, I would've waited for Nexus 4 or stayed with my Gnex. I've been rom hopping for last 2 years and now I just want something that's good enough.
I have to admit, it becomes like an addiction. I would be looking for new roms and rom updates constantly everyday.

There are cherrypicks you can do with AOKP right now that gives apparently full functionality to the S-Pen.

Naah I like the stock ROM and its features and stock Android will never have Wi-Fi calling which is something I must have with work so I'll never put it on this phone
Wifi calling is great but it's voice is a dinosaur.
I'm using the multi window rom and installed 4.2 Gapps.
Used the 4.2 launcher then switched to Go for the eye candy. Still maintain the S-pen while having 4.2 camera, gallery, ect AND sCal, sGallery and others.
Battery seems to be on par with stock Touchwiz, 40% after 15.5 hours, and 2.5hours screen time.
Still not sure how useful multi window is but I do agree Paranoid and the note2 were meant to be together.
first phone that im actually keeping stock!!! Phone runs smooth and with no problems.... aosp and aokp just seem.......pretty boring now. I do wish to have the nexus navigation on screen bar.
For the advanced users(we know who we are) AOSP will be great I can't wait. It's pointless now a days to not have AOSP it's best to start clean then add what you want free up all the space/ram and have the latest updates. I came from S3 and wanted the quad core, 5.5, and RGB s-pen can stay docked for all I care. When it comes it will be great!

What the google s4 means for us?

Will the release of this device mean that the the "samsung" s4 will be able to get official google updates without having to wait on samsung (provided that you root the phone and install the google factory image)?:highfive:

No after reading a few posts the updates will be sent to Samsung and they will have a time frame to release it for the google version.

Since they will have identical hardware, the G.E. rom can be dumped and turned into a custom rom with ease I assume. S4 will have 100% stable TouchWiz and AOSP (so to speak). I'm speculating as I haven't looked too much into this though.

I don't see what the big deal is. You xan get aosp roms on our phones right now. I never used touchwiz before owning this phone, but I do have to admit I like it. I flashed the few aosp roms floating around and immediately missed the features tw offers (remote control, air gestures, etc).
Ive come from all AOSP devices and I have to say it doesn't compliment the hardware on this phone imo.

I see pros and cons with the google s4. While it will be great that the device will be up to date with the latest android, the vanilla android won't be able to make use of all the hardware features the device has to offer. But a big con with google s4 is that it only comes with 16GB internal storage.

The obvious difference will be that everything will function properly.
There is ALWAYS something broke or not quite right with AOSP/CM Ports. Bluetooth, tethering, camera... you name it.
So...its obviously a little different than... "why not just flash CM or AOSP now!?"... Official Google support for the S4 is a HUGE deal.
This means nothing for me. I'm not about to pay for a device that I can do the same thing with my already owned sgs4. Flash an aosp rom. But maybe it's more than that I would assume

Whose to say this device something won't be broken. And it's quite obvious stuff will be broken but that's okay with me for any rom. I know I can expect a fix a lot faster.
For me, it's an overpriced and enlarged Nexus 4.
It lacks all the Samsung features (I know some people don't like that). It only has the vanilla Android on it which will have the same features as the Nexus 4.
Why do I need to pay $649.99 for the phone which has the same features as the one that only cost $299.99 (Nexus 4)? I know S4 is bigger, faster, blah blah blah but it's $350 different.
On the other hand, with AOSP rom available, for sure we will have better 3rd party ROM such as CM, AOKP, etc. I am actually happy to see that.
P.S. I am just sharing my opinion. No offense. =]

The aosp roms I've used have all been very stable for the most part. Just because Google will be releasing it does not mean it'll be completely bug free. I just don't find it exciting if it's not utilizing all the new tech Samsung has added.
No one really knows what's in store, but losing the ir blaster and the other sensors' functionality seems like a step backwards imo. I've owned all the nexus devices and have flashed aosp ROMs on every phone I have owned. It just doesn't excite me on this S4.
I actually like touch wiz this time around (minus the cartoon ui and bloatware).

[Q] Clean install of Android OS for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE

Background Info:
I have a wonderful Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that T-Mobile has corrupted. I deleted about 90% of the bloatware by rooting my phone. However, when I boot my phone I get a constant reminder that T-Mobile still won this fight: A nice long clip of their logo with an annoying startup sound. Also, recently I found out that they blocked my tethering and hotspot capabilities. I will not be defeated so easily.
Goal:
Reinstall the android OS for the Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE.
- Basically only want the OS and the drivers required for the phone to operate normally.
- It ill remove all non-samsung or android features.
Ensure that T-Mobile Won't get to add that crap (I've switched to another carrier and unlocked the phone).
Comments:
Firstly, I'd like to thank you for your time and help. Secondly, if you need more information to properly help me please ask. Also, If you know of a thread that already answers this, please post the link.
Goal = Question
LOL. ...T-mo still won the fight?
Sorry, I couldn't help myself. .lol
Anyway, I guess you are talking about "boot animation". That is embedded in the Rom, every carrier has its own animation.
However, you can change that :

Depends entirely on how Samsung integrated these into the ROM.. Or if they're just apks that don't depend on that much. With how Samsung willingly chooses to completely rewrite TouchWiz for every minor update, I'll guess that these features deeply depend on ROM code... And as such we have to wait for an official update.
That is sheer supposition at this point.

The good thing about this will be the new customization with all the KK ROM's we do have available once the developers get the KK source from the official release right?, most of them are pretty stock without as many options as my PACman 4.3.1 JB ROM has right now.

Can you uninstall all the utterly useless Samsung apps? Does the OS image weigh any less than 1GB? If not they may have made it run better, but they didn't debloat it.
And I *highly* doubt that Samsung got rid of their own useless apps they spent money developing.
Hopefully Google comes out with a phablet form device. Then I'm done with Samsung. Might go to an LG next. Screw Knox and Samsung.

I have had only a few android devices (kyocera zio, og evo, evo 3d, note 2, and kyocera torque) and samsung has been the easiest to work with. As far as knox is concerned (on note 2) it is nothing to worry about. The first day 4.3 was out we (me and lorjay) already had knox nullified and on day 2 root was working. While the same may not be true with new samsung devices. Point is knox means nothing to xda users/devs since there will always be a way around it.
4.4 on the note 3 looks okay and should be a better upgrade than 4.3 although we will have to wait and see. For myself i like aosp better since i found most of the things i like from samsung in 3rd party apps. Only thing I miss and can't get is a feature from note 3 mods (air command).

You've always been able to uninstall bloat.. it's one of the main reasons for having Titanium Backup. And a simple Google search will confirm my above statement. It's still gonna have bloat, just not nearly as much.

Sure, but who would even be on XDA if they weren't rooting...

Anyone heard any updates about our release yet? I keep seeing it for so many other phones.

The official kit kat tw Rom actually isn't coming with much bloat at all.. and Samsung has revamped tw to be more streamlined. I'm actually looking forward to it since I use the spen alot and upgrading to a Note 3 is really a waste of money.. I can wait for the Note 4

I'm excited to see what it's like if this is indeed the case.

By then i'm pretty sure most of us will have upgraded to a new phone but for those who keep their phones for 2+ years it will be nice to not be left out of KK update. Who knows I might keep my Note 2 for a while longer... I have no problems with it and it works just fine and does everything I need and then some.
I guess we either going to get 4.4 in April or May

Probably on the later side. US carriers never update to the "latest" version of Android...Google always gets another release out before carriers choose to finally re-write their ROMs to get up-to-date.
