One of the main reasons I plan on purchasing this is because of the the so called video playback. I plan on mainly watching movies and anime on this tablet and I was wondering how is the playback for 10 bit/10p mkv files?
I'm also curious to see whether it's safe to watch high resolution mkv files without overheating the tablet since I'll be watching it a lot during the night.
Thanks in advanced.
Yes to everything. All new tablets are capable of playing this format with no issue. You just need an app like BS Player. I play and stream 8gb mkv files all the time

I've heard that that Nexus 7 is prone to heatup when watching HD quality videos? So is it prone to heat if I watch for hours on end? I'll be playing mainly 720p 8 bit stuff.

I recommend MX Player, I watch 1080p movies all the time with it, however when it comes to big(over 5gb) 1080p mkv files I recommend BS Player.

Good to know. So when you watch for 5+ hours the tablet doesn't overheat?
+1 to mx player. I haven't found a video file it cannot play. Install the DTS plugin here off of XDA to play files with that sound format. I use it in conjunction with ES file explorer to stream video's over my network and even through wireless 1080p mkv's play flawlessly.

I haven't noticed any issue with getting warm playing videos but it sure gets warm when recording 1080p or doing multiple 360° photos.
I'm running a kernel with better thermal throttling. And its not gotten warm like it used to just takes a bit longer if it needs to just to keep cool.

No, the only time I've noticed a little warm is when playing high graphics games and when it's charging while using it, the common stuff that usually get it warm. no problems with over heat here on mine.
i have never watched movies for 5+ hours straight on my tablet. i watch a two hour movie or one hour show, and never had heat problems.
Thanks for all your responses everyone. I'm probably going to buy this today.

Okay, so I have been watching videos from the full YouTube site and they work perfectly on 720p. When I play the videos on 1080p, the videos lags, giving me something like 1 FPS. Is there a solution to this problem? Is it something with the phone or is it YouTube's problem? If anyone has any sort of insight on this problem, please post. If you are having the same problem, also post.

YouTube 1080p runs in flash..what's you expect..also..why in the world would you watch a 1080p video on a 480p screen?

Before we had root in the first days of the sgs2, i was able to watch 1080 videos wonderufully on YT also, epicmealtime fyi. I tried it today and the stock browser lags. =/
Why? Why do you need to see 1080P videos on a screen that only does 480P? And of course it'll lag it's running on flash on a website not optimized for mobile. Geez this is a phone not a desktop gaming rig.
It's not your phone it's youtube it's self. Youtube has always lagged on 1080p videos. My desktop has problems with it and I have 8 gig ram. Intel i7 sandy bridge with AMD Radeon HD 6990. Ever since youtube upgraded their interface it has been plagued with problems. My connection is 20 down 5 up.
The phone can run hi 10bit 1080p blue ray h.264 mkv videos with the lowest and highest encode possible with out losing frames. Which looks better than anything you can possibly stream. There is nothing on youtube worth watching in 1080p most videos are upscaled anyway. Which really isn't 1080p anyway.

Hello,
I just switched from an HTC Raider to a Galaxy Nexus and so far, I love it, except that there's no MicroSD slot, therefore limiting a bit the space available for music.
I have about 13 GB of music, which barely fits on the phone. They're mostly all MP3 196 kbps. What I'd like to do is convert my library to a different format in order to have at least some space for my apps and other stuff on my phone.
Is there any better format I should use? I'd ideally like to reduce the size while not losing too much quality. I, honestly, am quite a noob in terms of audio codecs.
I've checked .ogg but it doesn't seem to do that much of a difference in terms of file size (went from 4.26 MB to 4.06 MB).
Thanks!
If you're already at 196 any further compression would result in terrible sound quality. You'd have to select a smaller bit rate (no less than 128) and reencode from a high quality source like flac wave or best the original source.
Otherwise, you might just have to pick some to leave out, or create some rotating playlists so you can listen to something different every week or something.
Or look into Subsonic music streaming server and run that on your home machine. Then you have access to all no matter where you are.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Why don't you load that music to the cloud (online) and stream it to the phone using the stock music player. The stock music player on 4.0 supports streaming music unlike the older versions so you can save space on your phone.

Getting Google music setup at first with all your music can take a while ..ESP if you are like me and have to have correct album art ..no duplicates ..etc . But once its there it actually sounds great when streamed with high quality turned on.
And saves all that space!

I thought about streaming, but I recently changed wireless carriers and went from 6 GB of data per month to 500 MB, so I have to be extra careful (I activated 3 days ago and I'm already about to go over, so imagine with music).
I hate creating playlists or changing music every so often, I usually get random trips throughtout the day and want to listen to a specific song. I guess I'll have to make due with that, though.
Thanks for your help y'all!

I am planning on getting a Sprint Galaxy Nexus (have too many unused upgrade lines lol). And I was wondering how it performs on 720p 10bit video. From what I read it is able to play on MX Player, BS Player, Dice Player but I am more worried about performance. Some devices I hear have issues playing 10bit high action scenes so I want to know how it does. And if anyone has any experience with this?
I don't know but the nexus decodes 1080p video at the hardware level due to its chipset, not software like many phones. So it handles video playback like a champ.

I don't think any phone can do hardware decoding of 10bit video. 8bit video even a 1ghz single core hummingbird can play back 1080p with hardware decoding. But I am more particularly interested in 10bit which is more then likely decoded via software.

try vlc beta or mx player. H/W decoding might not work with these files but software playback could be fine in theory.
MX Player can decode 720p 10-bit (Hi10P) files using its software decoder but it's very slow. You'd better off reencoding them using Handbrake.
PS: Even without action scenes, 10-bit files lag on the GNex.

Well if I am going to transcode then it kind of eliminates some of the purpose. Have you tried in MX Player to set it to use both cores? fast mode? 16 bit color depth? overclocking the phone? None of the above would help?
10-bit H.264 is pointless. The screen (most likely 6-bits per channel with dithering) can't even display that many colors.

There are other benefits to 10-bit. The compression gives higher quality and smaller file sizes. Also the screens last I checked are not crappy TN panels. Super AMOLED is more then capable of displaying all colors. Even the IPS screens on phone these days are Super IPS (not to be confused with eIPS) and should be capable of displaying 10bit color.
That the format of the video is what it is and transcoding is not an option. Hence why I am interested in performance.
Don't expect anything but horrible performance. 10-bit H.264 streams can't be hardware decoded by anything on the market and probably never will.
Most S-IPS panels are also 6-bit per channel with dithering. Very few are actually 8-bit. Now, as far as monitors go, unless you're willing to spend 10 times the price for a non-consumer model, you will not find anything that supports 10-bits per channel natively. The story holds true for phones, too. I don't believe there are any 10-bit screens and I'm sure there won't be any for years to come (again, unless you're spending thousands for a phone).

First of all Super AMOLED has full color support because its not an LCD. The only thing you need to do is calibrate the screen so its not saturated. If you take OLED decay asside OLED can give you perfect color reproduction batter then the best IPS screens. Of course overall 10bit ends up being converted to 8bit because the hardware needs to support it like ATI Firepro
Now for SIPS, name me one monitor that is 6bit. The low end monitors that are 6bit are eIPS which use FRC. S-IPS is at minimum 8bit.
But we are getting off topic here..all I want to do is playback 10bit content. I am well aware of the limitations and that the decoding will be software which goes back to my question. Is the nexus powerful enough for the job.

With those Specs sounds like you're trying to cook your phone lol. Higher isn't always better. Example, I installed Batman to my Transformer which was overclocked to 1400mhz and it lagged like crazy. Once I put it down to 1100 it ran a lot better. Maybe you might have to find the sweet spot for your phone.
Can anyone please test a 1080p MKV file on the Galaxy Note 2? The specs seem like it could handle it, but I've been waiting for years for a smartphone that could handle 1080p playback and it looks like the Note 2 could finally be the answer.

I used the HD DVD demo from this post: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showthread.php?tid=4993&pid=41972#pid41972
It wouldn't play in the stock player, but it did play in BS Player. At first the whole clip was choppy, but I went into Playback Preferences > Codecs Played in HW Mode > and enabled WM/VC1 and it played smoothly with no artifacts or lagging. I'm sure any video player that can decode whatever your video file is in and use hardware rendering should be able to play 1080p media on the Note II.
Also, I'm not sure which particular hard drive you plan on using, but the Note II does not supply enough power through the USB port to power a portable hard drive (nor does any other smartphone I know of). You would have to use a lower power device (such as a large flash drive) or use a hard drive with a power adaptor. I've tested a few portable hard drives with my Note II and Nexus 7, and it just doesn't work unless the drive is powered externally.

1:04 on the video he shows you the that you can power a 250 Gb drive with otg cable with note 2 by itself through its power supply. Anything higher requires an external power supply.

The screen doesn't have 1080p res so it cant play back in 1080p. Look at the spec sheets it says it right on it. The screen is very good, the quality of the playback is awesome, but its not 1080.

I think it's funny how they make the screen itself on the phone 720p but the camera on the phone can record 1080p but yet it won't be able to play it back in 1080p. stupid just stupid

Ya, dont get me wrong the screen is awsome, but again its not advertised as a 1080p screen. watching hd video with this quad core and the dpi of the screen is impressive for a phone.

the recording capability is for playing on external devices because it will play 1080 on an external device with the appropriate MHL cable.

Can you even tell the difference between a 1080p & 720p movie on a screen this small?

No. I can barely tell a difference on anything under 80" unless I'm like 1' away from the screen. At normal viewing distance your eyes can't discern the difference, they aren't designed to see pixels since pixels don't exist naturally

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let everyone know that after purchasing the GN 10.1 2014, I have been absolutely loving the device. Yes there is a little lag here and there but this is a fantastic device. The one thing that I was very excited about was to watch HD movies on this gorgeous screen. Well come to find out when I entered into the Google play store to purchase a movie, the option for HD version had a note attached saying this device does not support HD playback. I wanted everyone to know this as I was unaware this high resolution screen was incapable of HD playback before I spent the $600.00.

The title of your post is deceiving, The tablet definitely Supports HD Playback, you can load your own videos in there and it will look amazing. Maybe play store just hasn't approved of HD for this tablet yet, You can try to get videos from Samsung Hub with the free $50 gift card

Thanks for the input and I have corrected the title. Where is the spec sheet or Some other info showing HD play back support?

The screen resolution is 2560x1600 which is much higher than HD (1920x1080). I don't think it'll say HD play back support explicitly on the spec sheet, but the CPU is more than capable of playing 1080p videos. I've been able to do it since I had my Galaxy S3. Also if you watch a video on youtube, it'll play HD videos. You can verify that it is HD by clicking on the action overflow button (3 dots) on a YouTube video and it'll say HD rather than just HQ.

It does say HD play back and record http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/SM-P6000ZWYXAR-specs.
You can also go to Media hub and watch free HD Tv content.
just install a player like MX Player or BS Player and load your own movies on it. The device is easily capable of 1080p content.
So given all of that, does anybody know what specifically the issue is with the Play Store? Is it a restrictive policy issue due to licensing agreements or something similar, or have they just not entered the model number into some database that tells the system that this is a HD capable device?
