Kindle Fire HD 8.9
OK so after looping my KFHD I now have it back to 8.4.6 version
with root access special offers disabled and OTA Updates disabled
also loaded Google Play Store
I would like a way to add a few custom images to the lock screens with out
hosing the device again.
I extracted the file "framework-res.apk"
and found the stock images that come with the device
they are in the path /res/raw/raw-xlarge-hdpi
There are 11 landscape images and 11 portrait images
Resolution is like:
Code:
1920 x 1200
72 DPI
Naming example is like:
landscape naming:
Code:
larhm.jpg
portrait naming:
Code:
parhm.jpg
Can anyone tell me how to add a few of my own images?
Well i do remember you have to overwrite the stock ones and that you can't just add more, also they have to be the same resolution as the original files. Think there's a tutorial floating around somewhere that tells how to do this.
Edit:hmm I guess I was wrong you can add more images, check this thread out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898198

Since I have less than 10 posts I can't post in the actual [HOW TO] HTC Desire Custom Splash screen thread but I do have a question:
I've gotten the custom splash screen loaded but the image is skewed when it boots i.e. slanty.
I've made sure the image size is 480x800 both in paint when editing and using nbimg, but still no luck.
Any ideas?
A screenshot would be nice if possible. The image has to be 480x800 with 24 bitmap. But you already knew that. How are you flashing it?
I'm using this method to flash the bootscreen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795132 and I have ensured that it was a 24-bit bitmap file of the proper dimension and followed the instructions in the thread to the letter.
I've attached a screenshot of how it looks. Any ideas what it could be? :S
Hi,
Had the same issue, use this http://www.ivanview.com/ivan-image-converter.html
to convert the image to 480*800 color depth 16 save it as bmp...
Found it in the splash screens threads...
Make sure you unchecked "keep ratio" and "pixels" for your resizing.

Hi,
Trying to use Android Flasher 1.6.1, but no matter where I unpack it to and no matter what bmp image I use (even ones known to work, such as the onme that comes with Android Flasher), nbimg throws as error and just shuts down. then .NET framework (4) error is that it can't access the fil because something else is using it.
Can't work out what is wrong--have read the entire thread and seem to have everything installed. Help appreciated.
Seems like an error with the phone. Maybe a Hboot problem? Just to make sure you could just run the latest RUU which will wipe everything and put it back to stock and sort things out.
Ended up going the adb route with
fastboot flash splash1 splash1.img
and it worked fine, so i'll leave it at that.

At first I couldn't see why this would work if it was already in 480x800 and the right colour depth, but the one difference I noticed was that I could save it as "Windows bmp" or "Old Windows bmp" and tried the latter. Seemed to fix the issue!
I tried both android flash and the android sdk to try to flash my new splash screen and both come up with the "failed (remote: not allowed)" I has s-off on hboot 0.98. I used unrevoked to root and and im on the miui rom
Give some more details.. how you tried to flash.. from fastboot.. what error it is giving.

Is there any way to push new wallpapers so they will show up in "HTC wallpapers" as if they were always there? I'm no developer but I've had my phone rooted for some time and I'm very comfortable in adb.
What I've tried so far:
I used adb to pull one of the stock wallpapers, it's a 960x800 .jpg. So I downloaded a wallpaper I like (already 960x800 but .png) and converted it to .jpg. The last stock wallpaper listed in /system/customize/resource/ is htc_wallpaper_22.jpg so I named mine htc_wallpaper_23.jpg and used adb to push it to /system/customize/resource/. It shows up in Root Explorer but when I go to menu>Wallpaper>HTC wallpaper it's not there. I also tried to replace htc_wallpaper_22.jpg with the image of my choice and it did change the actual wallpaper but not the preview icon, so I put the stock one back. I would like it to look like it was there from the factory if at all possible, any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Bump
No suggestions, am I the only one interested in achieving this?
this is a boot animation that i converted from the intro of matrix 1 movie. I do not own this animation the owners are the owners of the matrix movie.
i simply converted it to animation and formatted it for 1280 x 720 screens
it starts with matrix code then says "the matrix" and after that you get the green cursor blinking.
this took hours to do so thank me if you are thankful.
to make this your shutdown animation, name the zip "shutdownanimation.zip" (no caps) and drop and replace any existing file in /system/media/
if you want to save your old animation just rename it before you drop the file there. ( youll need to use a program like ES file explorder with root access and mount system directory in order for this to work ) then unmount after, and reboot.
same goes for bootanimation the file name is bootanimation.zip sometimes this goes in /system/media/ but more likely then not the boot animation goes in /data/local/ if you want to be safe just copy it to both locations. again ES file explorer is capable of accessing your data folder.
(root required)
any damage done to your phone is your own fault, only use this file if your phone has a screen resolution of 1280x720
if you have another resolution phone you can open the desc.txt file in notepad++ and change the resolution and it should work, just make sure you use the right resolution and you change the smaller number with the smaller number and larger with larger or else your image will be distorted.
note: this method can change most animation resolutions as long as the dimensions are somewhat similar. android will scale the files, if not you'll see distorted images or nothing.
SIDE NOTE: i recommend testing all animations with shutdownanimation.zip FIRST. this way if there is an issue you can pull your battery and boot into your phone and fix it, if you create a problem with bootanimation it could be a little harder to fix, although most of the time a faulty animation will be skipped by the system rather than causing boot loops (most of the time, i have heard of problems thats why i recomend trying any animation not verified working with your phone as a shutdownanimation first)
note on some custom roms like Cyanogenmod you don't want to use a shutdownanimation. because it's shutdown process is like 2 seconds, stock roms do alot of reflashing during shutdown (or something to that nature) and its more like an 8 second shutdown, in this case you'll see "phone shutting down" dialogue for 4-5 seconds" if you are getting that i would recommend using an animation as its much more pleasant to look at.
by the way this animation would look GREAT on a tablet, anything that's 1280x720 should be able to use the file straight up and any other resolution tablet just change the desc.txt file like i described above

another note is that if you unpack the zip at any time and have to repack it, use winrar and make sure you use compression method: STORE and not normal compression (this will cause black screen because the program expects a uncompressed zip file)
here is a matrix code animation that is portrait style instead of landscape with no "the matrix" words just the matrix code. i didn't make this one i just formatted it for 1280x720, i got it off the app "bootanimations root" and reformatted it.
if anyone is having trouble resizing an animation they like, post the animations .zip file here that you download for any other android phone or tablets animation that you want to use with your phone, give me the dimensions of your phone (this can be found by good your phones name and "specs" for instance for this phone lg p930 specs, youll get lists of specs for the phone, and it'll tell you this phone is 1280x720. so give me the zip from the animation you want to use and your phones resolution and i'll make the changes and repack the file for you. (if you dont use the right zip app and text editor it won't work)
Unable to flash it. Says invalid zip
TWRP latest
My phone is 720 p it is sure
Can u still help me?

I have root access to my Kindle Fire HD 8.9, and I'd like to change the wallpaper. I'm thinking the stock images must be stored somewhere in the file system, and I could just overwrite them with images of my own. I mean, why not?
Anyone know where in the file system the wallpaper images are kept? File format and size for new picture?
rogerlig
If you are talking about the lock screen images, be warned you may end up getting stuck not able to get into the kindles home screen or a bootloop, you have to update the images in a system apk, I don't remember which one offhand, if the resolution isn't exactly like the image you are replacing you could have problems. After u update the apk u put it back on the device and I would suggest using adb to overwrite the original so u can chmod it in case something happens from it being replaced.

Okay, semi-newb here. I've been able to replace the ROM on an Arnova tablet a year ago, and sideloaded Google play on a Polaroid tablet. I've been researching the simplest way to turn my Mom's Kindle Fire V1 into a simple android tablet with access to Google Play. If I can accomplish this, then I'm hoping to repeat the process on my son's Kindle Fire HD. I'd like to load one of the Nexus 7 Roms. Unfortunately, there's a /lot/ of different Nexus ROMs and methods, each with links to other software that I'm trying to understand. Please forgive my questions...
I've downloaded these apps:
-gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
-GooManager_2.1.3.apk
-Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.9.zip
-SmoothROM-1.7_otter.zip
-Smirkit.apk
I started at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265999
Which led me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103278
"Installation
-Make sure you have the latest TWRP"
Is this in the goomanager file? I downloaded from this link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592681, but I don't see the screen that shows up in the OP, and I'm not entirely sure what to do with this program.
"-I suggest you make a backup"
Is this what TWRP is for? I've copied all the KF files onto my computer already, but I don't have an .img file. And if I want to reflash with the original files, do I need to create an .img of my existing files, or do I download one from the list of files that I see in the goomanager?
"-Wipe data, cache, system, and dalvik cache"
Do I use one of these files to do this, or do I go into the KF settings to do this?
-Install ROM
Do I just copy the boot.img over to the root directory of the KF. I recall doing this for the Arnova.
-Install the latest gapps for CM10.1.x
Again, do I use one of these programs to do so, or copy files over (side-load)? I don't see .apk files in this package
-Reboot
I think I can do this one.
Again, sorry for being a newb...I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right. Haven't bricked a tablet yet, but I've probably just been lucky so far.
Thanks in advance. (Oh, do I need the fastboot cable for any of this? Is it recommended to get one just in case?)
Ok lemme get to things straight, this is the kfhd forum, if you have a kindle fire 1 then this is technically the wrong forum but i will point you in the right direction becasue theres some things you need to understand. First off the kindle fire 1 is very very easy to do what you want to do to it. Basically you download kindle fire utility and it will root and install whatever recovery you want onto it and from there you grab rom's from the kindle fire 1's development section and you can flash them with the corresponding gapps.
Here's where the important thing is, if you want to do this to a hd model it isnt the same process, if you attempt to use kindle fire utility on a hd model you are likely to hard brick it because the hd has a locked bootloader. The hd has a simple enough method to flash it though, as long its not the 2013 model you can install roms on it, theres a tutorial for installing with fireflash that i think is the easiest method as long as you make sure to downgrade the bootloader, somehow people tend to miss the checkbox for it.
If you mention which hd you have i cna link you to the tutorial for it but i don't wanna send you the wrong one even though there really isnt much of a difference since its the same program and inlcudes the files in teh apk.
Now to answer some questions:
First off the backup in twrp is useful yes, but only if you have twrp installed, lets say something happens and you no longer can access recovery and are forced to use fastboot, in that case you would need the image files that you mentioned, those images can be downloaded off the internet or you can jsut backup up your kindle and use those images.
Second: The wipe options are in twrp once you have it working
Third: You don't copy the boot.img over, you hit install in twrp and select the zip file that is the rom and tell it to flash.
Fourth: do as said in previous step, just do it after you flash teh rom though.
and finally yes its kinda recommended to have a fastboot cable, though i am one to talk since i don't have one but i have the means to make one at any time. Hope this helps!
Also thought i'd mention if it turned out to be a kindle fire 2 that its process is similar to the hd's so dont use kindle fire utility on it either. You can always check software version that it has installed an i can tell you for sure what model it is.
