I have root access to my Kindle Fire HD 8.9, and I'd like to change the wallpaper. I'm thinking the stock images must be stored somewhere in the file system, and I could just overwrite them with images of my own. I mean, why not?
Anyone know where in the file system the wallpaper images are kept? File format and size for new picture?

If you are talking about the lock screen images, be warned you may end up getting stuck not able to get into the kindles home screen or a bootloop, you have to update the images in a system apk, I don't remember which one offhand, if the resolution isn't exactly like the image you are replacing you could have problems. After u update the apk u put it back on the device and I would suggest using adb to overwrite the original so u can chmod it in case something happens from it being replaced.

To flash: Download the zip then with an unlocked (S-OFF) bootloader, flash the new_splash.img file to your phone:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash splash1 new_splash.img
fastboot reboot
i would rather have it as a background
my boot image shows 1 micro second. not worth even thinking about changing it.

Some kind of bloody :-D but looks great, although I'm running a MacBook bit I also love my Android mobile.

This is just a splash image file so as long as your screen size is 480 x 800. You can search for how to change the splash image for your particular phone and then just use this file. I'm sure it will work on any version of android
Anyone have the adb commands handy for pulling the stock splash image just in case I want to put it back?

Even though the original splash is posted, the commands to pull the old one are to be executed from a root shell and are as follows:

You may have to do a search for it because when I pulled mine it put it into a random folder on my computer

OK so after looping my KFHD I now have it back to 8.4.6 version
with root access special offers disabled and OTA Updates disabled
also loaded Google Play Store
I would like a way to add a few custom images to the lock screens with out
hosing the device again.
I extracted the file "framework-res.apk"
and found the stock images that come with the device
they are in the path /res/raw/raw-xlarge-hdpi
There are 11 landscape images and 11 portrait images

Well i do remember you have to overwrite the stock ones and that you can't just add more, also they have to be the same resolution as the original files. Think there's a tutorial floating around somewhere that tells how to do this.

I have the file "Dtcp_apk.apk” renamed to "Dtcp_apk.apk.bat" I checked and that hasn't changed however the ads are back
I am still rooted and the software hasn't updated I do have /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip file renamed to otacerts.zip.bat.
Anyone else seeing this?
Ads have returned update
So I renamed the file to It's original state “dtcp_apk.apk” then shutdown the device,
after starting it back up the ads were gone again.

Okay, semi-newb here. I've been able to replace the ROM on an Arnova tablet a year ago, and sideloaded Google play on a Polaroid tablet. I've been researching the simplest way to turn my Mom's Kindle Fire V1 into a simple android tablet with access to Google Play. If I can accomplish this, then I'm hoping to repeat the process on my son's Kindle Fire HD. I'd like to load one of the Nexus 7 Roms. Unfortunately, there's a /lot/ of different Nexus ROMs and methods, each with links to other software that I'm trying to understand. Please forgive my questions...

-GooManager_2.1.3.apk
-Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.9.zip
-SmoothROM-1.7_otter.zip

Do I use one of these files to do this, or do I go into the KF settings to do this?

Ok lemme get to things straight, this is the kfhd forum, if you have a kindle fire 1 then this is technically the wrong forum but i will point you in the right direction becasue theres some things you need to understand. First off the kindle fire 1 is very very easy to do what you want to do to it. Basically you download kindle fire utility and it will root and install whatever recovery you want onto it and from there you grab rom's from the kindle fire 1's development section and you can flash them with the corresponding gapps.
Here's where the important thing is, if you want to do this to a hd model it isnt the same process, if you attempt to use kindle fire utility on a hd model you are likely to hard brick it because the hd has a locked bootloader. The hd has a simple enough method to flash it though, as long its not the 2013 model you can install roms on it, theres a tutorial for installing with fireflash that i think is the easiest method as long as you make sure to downgrade the bootloader, somehow people tend to miss the checkbox for it.
If you mention which hd you have i cna link you to the tutorial for it but i don't wanna send you the wrong one even though there really isnt much of a difference since its the same program and inlcudes the files in teh apk.
Now to answer some questions:
First off the backup in twrp is useful yes, but only if you have twrp installed, lets say something happens and you no longer can access recovery and are forced to use fastboot, in that case you would need the image files that you mentioned, those images can be downloaded off the internet or you can jsut backup up your kindle and use those images.
Second: The wipe options are in twrp once you have it working
Third: You don't copy the boot.img over, you hit install in twrp and select the zip file that is the rom and tell it to flash.
Fourth: do as said in previous step, just do it after you flash teh rom though.
and finally yes its kinda recommended to have a fastboot cable, though i am one to talk since i don't have one but i have the means to make one at any time. Hope this helps!
Also thought i'd mention if it turned out to be a kindle fire 2 that its process is similar to the hd's so dont use kindle fire utility on it either. You can always check software version that it has installed an i can tell you for sure what model it is.
