I am not sure what i have done but when I connect my kindle fire to my computer only file i see is twrp and nothing else and it stays stuck on the kindle fire logo? I think everything is gone please help...
in case u still have TWRP [unlikely, but worst case scenario], u can mount it & copy a new ROM. Then, just flash the ROM
u can also try checking out the recovery(TWRP) settings..
hope this helps
Can you tell me how to do this I have no clue i can still boot to recovery mode on twrp on the kindle fire i just cant figure out how to fix the kindle?

If you don't have TWRP 2.1.1, you'll have to set the bootmode back to 4000 using adb.
Code:
adb shell idme bootmode 4000
If your system software is intact, a reboot after successfully issuing the above command should get the device booting normally again.
Thank you I read through that I dont really understand much but does anyone know if there are places i can take it to to fix it? Also anyway to get the stuff off of it so i can return it to the store and maybe they will give me exchange?

I doubt there are shops set up to take in your KF and unbrick it for you. To "get the stuff off of it" requires pretty much the same steps to "fix it" anyway, so you are better off just unbricking it yourself.
If there are things in the guide you don't understand, I suggest you slow down, read it again and ask specific questions on those topics. I know there's a lot in there for a novice to take in all at once. There are people here that can help you, but these are mostly DIY tasks and you can't take "yourself" out of the process.
I suspect you have some device driver issues and post #2 covers most of that, but you really need to understand post #1 so you are not grasping at things in the dark.

Next time you have a problem, please start your own thread and not hijack another user's thread.
Needless to say, it's a bad idea to delete the system directory in the way that you did. I'm sure you realize this by now.
If you only have the stock bootloader installed (orange and white "kindle fire" bootlogo when the device starts up), then you need to either get a factory cable or open up the back cover to fix it.

You'll find directions on how to revert to the stock software here...

but you are still going to have issues if your device drivers aren't set up correctly. I suggest you try out some of the commands listed in post #3 of the thread I referred you to previously and go back to post #2 if you can't get them to work.
If you're like me, you have a Kindle Fire, but you would prefer to use it with a Mac than with a Windows computer. I'm writing up a guide on how to do numerous things such as rooting the Fire, but with a Mac.
Rooting
If you want to modify your device, the first thing to do is to root it. You can then install many apps that require root privileges, as well as install TWRP and FireFireFire Bootloader.
I use the utility Breakdroid, and it is easier to use than KindleFireUtility, the Windows counterpart, because it does not require you to install any drivers, it just works. Here is the website. Go to downloads to download the Breakdroid tool for Kindle Fire.
http://northmendo.com/breakdroid/ Feel free to donate to the guy who made this.
1. Download Breakdroid and mount the DMG file.
2. Make a folder on your desktop or applications folder called 'Breakdroid' and copy over all the files.
3. Open the Breakdroid application. It will open a terminal window. Use option 5 'Kindle Fire Tools' and hit return.
4. An icon will bounce on your dock. It may bounce for up to a minute. It will then ask you if you want to open this application downloaded from the web. Click ok.
5. It will then show a dialog warning you that this voids your warranty. If you are attempting this, you should know this already.
6. Now it opens another terminal window.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
7. Type '1' and press enter. Follow prompts. Make sure you follow any instructions exactly. Follow all the steps until step 8. You can use step 9 to donate to the guy who made this. It is optional.
8. Finally you can use step 10 to quit the Kindle Fire tools.
9. FireFireFire has been installed as bootloader and you have rooted your device.
Recovery
You can use TWRP which has been installed by the previous guide to install ROMS, backup the current system and recover from any problems.
1. To access the TWRP recovery, shut down your kindle by holding down the power button until it shows a shut down dialog. Tap shut down.
2. Now turn the Fire on again. It will show a blue 'Kindle Fire' logo. This is the new FireFireFire bootloader which has been installed.
3. Keep your eye on the power button light. It should be green. Wait for it to flicker slightly. Or you can wait 2 seconds. Then press the power button again. It will show boot options.
4. Use the power button to cycle between the boot modes. Choose recovery to boot into recovery, then leave your Fire to boot.
5. Team Win logo will show, then the curtain will rise, showing a grid of buttons.
6. You have booted into recovery! Reboot without choosing recovery mode to get back to the normal system.
Install a ROM
1. Hook up your Fire with your Mac with a Micro-B USB cable. You can get them cheap on eBay, but mine broke after a few weeks, so feel free to find a more reliable vendor.
2. Download a ROM for your Fire. I'd recommend the GedeROM if you want an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM, or MoDaCo if you want a modified stock ROM with Google Play Store preinstalled.
3. Copy over the .zip file, placing on the Fire which has mounted on your desktop. Also copy over the gapps .zip if provided if you want the Google Apps package.
4. Eject the Fire and disconnect it from the Mac.
5. Use the previous guide to boot into Recovery.
6. Tap the Backup button and backup your system. This is very important, especially when installing your first ROM.
7. BACKUP YOUR CURRENT SYSTEM! For good measure.
8. Now tap the home button at the top right of the screen. Now tap Wipe, then tap Factory Reset. Then wipe Cache, then wipe Davlik Cache. Finally System Wipe. (Thanks to Thepooch for the best way to do this bit!)
9. This will wipe the device, so make sure you've Backed up your Fire! (See steps 6 and 7).
10. Now go back to the home screen using the home button and tap the install button.
11. Choose the ROM .zip file which you placed on the sdcard. I hope you named it something easy to remember and identify.
12. Tap install.
13. If it fails, restore from the backup you made (see how important backing up before wiping is?) and make sure your ROM you downloaded was downloaded properly. Also make sure it's the original zip file, not expanded or recompressed. Then repeat. If all else fails, try a different ROM or just stay with stock.
14. If it was successful, then go back to the home screen, and if you downloaded a gapps zip file, flash this as well, in the same manner as the ROM zip.
15. Reboot into system using the reboot button on the home screen.
16. Successful? If you don't like your ROM, you can always revert to stock using your backup, or install a new ROM following these steps.

great guide nice job really
Ok, I'll add that.
Yea, I'm just annoyed how little support there is for Macs so I wanted to show that it can be done
where can i get the link to the rom
I tried googling for the rom, and i downloaded the rom from MoDaCo, but when it finished downloaded, it's not written as .zip file.
I tried to place the entire folder in the sd card, but when go thru the TWRP recovery, of course, i couldnt find any .zip file.
Anybody can help?
This is a common problem. Open Safari, then press Command + (comma). This opens your preferences. Untick the option of automatically opening 'safe' files which is automatically unzipping your zip files. Now you can redownload the ROM and find the zip in your Downloads folder
some links to make this happen
Great info, will test much of it shortly. A few links that I found helpful and are ref'd above:
for the Google Apps package, Rootzwiki was helpful

and points to Jelly Bean universal apps:

Kudos to twa_priv for a start to that trail.
Also twa_priv has useful info here (not mac specific, check the changelog for udpates)

that also links to hashcode's kernel_omap (now over my skill set, but might be useful)

northmendo's breakdroid always worth mentioning, cuz you might need to start there:

and the video to Root Kindle Fire Mac (6.3 & 6.3.1)

[EDIT 2] I've noticed that I am having an issue with charging since I installed the rom. It will only recognize the charger when the Kindle is turned on, and it charges VERY slow. Anyone have any insight to this? [EDIT 2]
[EDIT] Nevermind! The play store was included! This TOTALLY reinvented the Fire for me. [EDIT]
Thanks so much for this! Working on it now.
One question.. The site that I downloaded gede from didn't come with the GApps zip. I went searching, but it looks like there are many different versions. Could you please inform me of where to get the right one?
Thank you again. Very, very much!

This will NOT work on the new kindle, as although it looks similar, it is very different inside. You stand an extremely high chance of a permanent hard-brick for your kindle fire. DO NOT PROCEED.
Hello guys!
I've been trying to root my kindle fire... I follow all the steps 1 to 7. Step 8 from me return "Invalid option".
I have installed Root Explorer but when I try to move "vending" apk from /sdcard/Documents to /system/app I get the message: "Your phone doesn't appear to be rooted...."
I need to follow some additional steps?
My device version is 6.3.1
Regards!
Issue
Why is it that at step 1 i am stuck on "waiting for device" ?

Maybe you should go through the steps again? It shouldn't say "Invalid option" at all. Make sure you power off and power on the kindle fire in all the necessary steps.

Hey everyone,
I need your help. I rooted my Kindle Fire HD (7.2.3) with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074565. I now have 'SuperSU' and 'Root Check Basic' Applications on my Kindle Fire HD.
What I want is to have the 'Google Play Store' and the latest 'Jelly Bean' version. How can I do this? The other website shows me only the way with a PC but not with a Mac.
Thanks for all your responses!
Afaik you can't root the HD (correct me if I'm wrong but) you risk bricking your device.

Hey there,
Long time lurker first time poster. Sorry I didn't post a hello thread, This forum has really helped me out with my Evo and Evo shift. I have never rooted them as I didn't have need. They served my purpose as is. Now I'm in new territory so I humbly ask you pros for help trying to root my Kindle Fire. The only reason I bought this was to turn it more into a tablet more like my phone.
I have seen and read just about everything I can find on installing the drivers and rooting this thing.
I have search here and found partial answers that end up turning into a different conversation and nothing has worked.
I'm on Win XP sp3 I am very computer savvy since I'm a software tester but I am stumped.
I set driver signing to ignore and I still get the unsigned error when trying to run install_drivers.bat.
You can't change the driver signing in the registry because it will just revert back.
When I plug it in to install it it shows up in the device manager as an Android phone with the Android Composite ADB Interface If I try and update the drivers it says the best driver is already installed.
I uninstall it and reinstall and point it to C:\Documents and Settings\Users\my profile name\KFU\Drivers\Kindle and it installs the same way as an android phone with the ADB interface below it.
Like I said. I have tried everything I have read and run.bat still shows as offline
Is the Android Composite ADB Interface mean the drivers are installed correctly?
I read one post someplace else that said if it said android phone to delete it.
Been at this for a week. Come home from work and spend hours trying over and over and there must be some bonehead thing I didn't do or a setting I didn't set correctly.
Please help
You can try a utility that I did for myself and others to root.
Basic Fire Utility[Expired]
Also goto %USERPROFILE%\.android and rename the file adb_usb.ini to adb_usb.ini.bk then rerun to driver install.
Also this should have been asked in the Kindle Fire Q&A.
Try this method:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/12/13/how-to-install-kindle-fire-adb-usb-driver/
.Sometimes kfu says that the boot status is unknown even though it is just fine. assuming u havnt Try one of the options and see if the fire responds.

Mods please move to the correct forum. It was a little confusing when I saw all the kindle forums.
Do you have a how to for the basic fire utility? Do I need to remove all of the KFU stuff from 9.6 first? Sorry, first root. I installed the driver and now the DM says android phone,Amazon Kindle Fire ADB Interface.
Thanks again
Since you have the drivers installed do selection 3 to install FFF 1.4a then select 4 to install TWRP 2.2.0. Selection 5 will root and put basic Google apps.
The Basic Fire Utility copies the root/ gapps flash file to your device sdcard directory then boots you into TWRP. From there you flash the file... Choose Install, scroll under folders until you see Gapps+Apps.zip file and select it then swipe the blue button to the right to flash.
Thats it. Select reboot System and you are now rooted.
Sorry I am not very good at the instruction part thats why I just kept it to myself. But If you have more questions please let me know.

I could not get this thing rooted. Tera Tike spent a lot of time walking me through it, but still nothing.
It would only boot into TWRP. He then offered to see if he could fix it for me if I sent it to him.
From all of our message interaction I didn't hesitate to send a new Kindle to a total stranger.
He had put so much time in trying to help me via messaging that I knew he was a good guy and I was right.
He fix it as soon as he got it. Had a corrupt partition. Most likely something stupid I did, and it's on it's way back ready to go.

Amazon Kindle Fire
I have recently gotten a amazon kindle fire, and i have been trying to install adb drivers so i can root it and flash recovery and it finally recognized it as (android phone) android composite adb interface and the other as kindle fire android composite adb interface but the one labeled android phone has the yellow exclamation mark and in general says this device cannot start(code 10) and says its not using resources because it has a problem.... (general details on missing driver is: Device type: android phone
manufacturer: google, inc.
location pci bus 2, device 0, function 0
i tried to install the google drivers again and it said the drivers already installed do you want to continue i hit yet and then it said it could not find the drivers... im getting really confused but i am very new to this and would love to gain more knowledge so if anyone can help you have my undivided attention. thanks.
Okay, well the title should be pretty self explanatory I hope, but here's what I'm looking for:
A way to install TWRP and FireFireFire 1.4 on a Kindle Fire using a Mac (OS X 10.7.4 Lion if anyone wants to know).
I know that you should install TWRP only through fastboot then use TWRP to flash FFF and your custom ROM.
I also know there's something about modifying Android SDK drivers to make ADB and fastboot work properly with the Kindle Fire.
I am not looking for any sort of one-click solution. I once jailbroke my iPhone using a simple one-click, it didn't turn out well. Fortunately iPhones are almost always fixed by an iTunes restore. Did it using redsn0w after that, it was better. I manually installed homebrew on my Wii as well, which is more complex than redsn0w and more of an actual manual install. Wii homebrew works beautifully.
Anyways, I'm against one-clicks/simple rooters/jailbreakers because it seems like if even one thing is out of place, they mess things up.
I want to manually do this, and I know there's a way to. I just need to install Android SDK, I can do that. Modify the drivers, this is the thing I need the most assistance with, because I don't know how to do it and I know tools like KFU do it automatically. And of course, I want to manually use pokey9000's fbmode to get into fastboot, then flash TWRP, then get into TWRP, flash FFF and my custom ROM.
Anyone who could help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Well I see you don't want the easy solution but maybe part of this will help you with the drivers easily http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790139 then its just a matter of fastboot flashing twrp.img and fff.bin to your kindle. From that point you enter recovery make a backup. I suggest reboot after this. transfer a ROM zip and gapps zip of your choice to the root of your sdcard. Boot back to recovery- factory reset, -wipe cache, -wipe dalvik,-wipe system,-flash ROM,-flash gapps- select reboot then select system if prompted enjoy

I'm on windows myself and I understand that on Mac and Linux drivers aren't a problem as they are on windows. Good luck don't be afraid to ask more questions before you leap others out there have more experience with Mac than I
Edit: And note that I said fff.bin is the file you fastboot flash not a zip a zip file will break your bootloader severely unless you flash in recovery then a zip is the desired file type. Research is good prevents mishaps

BreakDroid is one of those "one click" solutions I'm really trying to keep away from. I know that installing a custom bootloader + recovery is just a matter of having your computer properly recognize the Kindle Fire as an ADB interface, which I need to modify drivers for. I need to know how to modify drivers.
After that, it's just that I need to get into fastboot and I've got it from there.
Well, since you want a complex approach, may as well go with Firekit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430038&highlight=firekit (install_fff_twrp_from_stock)
I simply just said to use breakdroid for the driver install I didn't suggest you use it for anything else but with drivers I'm sure there are plenty of driver setup tutorials for Mac and the kindle fire so Google is your friend. Read the very first sentence of my first post seems you overlooked that
Breakdroid works great though is simple and installs exactly what you need. From there you have twrp and can flash away.

Actually from what I've seen on various tutorials, ones about rooting, they always have instructions for Windows to install drivers but most of them instruct Mac / Linux to skip that step, then Mac / Linux picks back up where you're already issuing ADB and fastboot commands. I feel totally stupid if I've overlooked this, but if it's actually possible to skip this step that'd be so much easier.
Also I did read your first post. But when looking at BreakDroid I saw nothing specific about installing drivers, just that it was supposed to be a simple tool where you go through each step.

All simple tools are meant to work great. Unfortunately, they just don't sometimes.
Is there anyone who has actually rooted a Kindle Fire on Mac or Linux here that can verify you don't need to do anything with drivers? And that just installing the Android SDK is sufficient to proceed?

Very true. The unfortunate part is when users of these tools have no idea how to get themselves out of trouble, but I digress...

Here's a guide for setting up a Linux environment...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475740
All you really need for Linux are the binaries (adb/fastboot) and /root/.android/adb_usb.ini with 0x1949 in it. Once you have those, you just need to run the binaries as root. The other things in that guide sets things up so a user without root privileges can access the USB ports and set paths to those binaries. There are no "drivers" in the Windows sense to be installed and you don't need to install the SDK if you can find those binaries elsewhere.
I'm confident the setup will be similar to Mac OS X, but udev is linux specific. I don't know what the Mac OS X equivalents are because I've always used virtual machines with Linux or Windows to interact with the KF. Regardless, you should still be able to use them as root and issue commands to the KF.
Thepooch gave you links to my guides... whichever OS you decide to use, all of the fastboot and adb commands will be the same. You just need to swap out the directory path conventions from Windows to Linux/Mac OS X.

Thanks for your help! Thanks for everyone's help actually! You all contributed somehow, and thanks to you I successfully installed FFF 1.4a, TWRP 2.2.0, and Jandycane 7-29 on my Kindle Fire! Awesome so far, thanks guys!

Damn, NOW I find the regular KF forum. Sorry for the double-post...
Okay, semi-newb here. I've been able to replace the ROM on an Arnova tablet a year ago, and sideloaded Google play on a Polaroid tablet. I've been researching the simplest way to turn my Mom's Kindle Fire V1 into a simple android tablet with access to Google Play. If I can accomplish this, then I'm hoping to repeat the process on my son's Kindle Fire HD. I'd like to load one of the Nexus 7 Roms. Unfortunately, there's a /lot/ of different Nexus ROMs and methods, each with links to other software that I'm trying to understand. Please forgive my questions...
I've downloaded these apps:
-gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
-GooManager_2.1.3.apk
-Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.9.zip
-SmoothROM-1.7_otter.zip
-Smirkit.apk
I started at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265999
Which led me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103278
"Installation
-Make sure you have the latest TWRP"
Is this in the goomanager file? I downloaded from this link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592681, but I don't see the screen that shows up in the OP, and I'm not entirely sure what to do with this program.
"-I suggest you make a backup"
Is this what TWRP is for? I've copied all the KF files onto my computer already, but I don't have an .img file. And if I want to reflash with the original files, do I need to create an .img of my existing files, or do I download one from the list of files that I see in the goomanager?
"-Wipe data, cache, system, and dalvik cache"
Do I use one of these files to do this, or do I go into the KF settings to do this?
-Install ROM
Do I just copy the boot.img over to the root directory of the KF. I recall doing this for the Arnova.
-Install the latest gapps for CM10.1.x
Again, do I use one of these programs to do so, or copy files over (side-load)? I don't see .apk files in this package
-Reboot
I think I can do this one.
Again, sorry for being a newb...I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right. Haven't bricked a tablet yet, but I've probably just been lucky so far.
Thanks in advance. (Oh, do I need the fastboot cable for any of this? Is it recommended to get one just in case?)

Well, I have downloaded the files that these links said to download, but I've not installed anything yet. This was one of two "Nexus 7" downloads I could find, but the KF is untouched.
