Phone with No Signal / Service - Samsung Captivate Glide

I recently bought another glide on ebay (my old one met with a...rough end) in supposed "Manufacturer Refurbished" condition. The phone looks great, and I quickly rooted and installed a custom rom on it (without ever plugging in my SIM / SD card first) and finally was ready to put my SIM card in. However, the phone seemed to have signal only for a few seconds and then ceased to have ANY signal.
Regardless of ROM, fumbling with the SIM card, doing the "tape trick" to get better contact, the phone doesn't seem to want to work.
I noticed that with the SIM in, the phone claims to have a signal (something like -111) and Mobile Network Type will say things like "HSPA", which implies that something is at least part way working. Service State says "Out of Service" or something though.
My IMEI is fine by the way. I'm flashing back to stock EVERYTHING at the moment to see if it'll help.
Any ideas guys?
UPDATE: Stock ROM flashed through ODIN is still broken. And I think the "signal" I saw for a few seconds was actually wifi...so, I'm going to open a case on ebay I suppose after talking to the seller.

unlocked phone suddenly says 'invalid sim'

I broke and replaced the screen in my unlocked upgraded flashed-ROM wallaby and the unit now starts up and reports invalid SIM.
Is there any solution or should I re-flash the rom again and see if that works, hope for the best?
Try the SIM in a different (unlocked) phone, to make sure the SIM isn't fried. If the SIM is fried, you can get a new one from your provider. SIMs do get fried sometimes -- it happened to me a couple months back. Fortunately my provider (Cingular) has a shop just down the road from me, and they burned a new SIM in 5 minutes.
I apologise, I should have said
Sorry, I should have said, it does work in another machine and as I said, it did work immediately I used the xda flashing process to upgrade the ROM in this very unit before I dropped it.
Everything else in the new ROM seems to work which makes it infuriating that it wont recognise the SIM. I even tried calling T-Mobile and asking them if they could see the SIM on their network and they couldn't.
(I even have one of those SIM copying devices they send you free for some unknown reason when they want you to upgrade your service to some kind of higher level SIM card. I was wondering if I should try to use it again but as mine does work, this, like the whole copying device, seemed a bit academic)

Please help me - Updated Info - a Clue?

Money is tight, phone broke, bought a T-Mobile Dash off Craig's list. I am a T-Mobile Customer. Tried my sim card in it before I bought it - made a call - no problem. Got home (8 miles away) and it couldn't stay connected. Searching, searching, searching. Tried husband's sim card - same thing. D/led manual to be sure sim card was properly seated. It was. Called, texted, emailed seller. No reply. Reset phone. Same issue. Switched Sim cards back and forth, back and forth. Was able to make one call for 10 seconds and then call dropped - no service. Now I'm out my money and still have no phone. Is there anyone out there with any ideas?
Update: opened case, wiggled battery, wiggled sim card, finally got some bars. Made a call successfully. Second call - call dropped as soon as connected. Third call - Call dropped before connected. Now it still shows bars but will not make call or send text. Please Please help. Somebody, Anybody??
You might want to perform a hard reset. See the sticky at the top of the page.

What rom r u using? Have you called T - mobile and see if they had any signal reception problems in your area?, cause it can be a dead spot reception area.
Have you tried manually searching for other networks. Where I live, you can occasionally see TMo towers, but I do better to connect to a non TMo tower and be set on manual search.

I had the same problem with my Dash, and I gave up on it a year ago.
Symptoms:
Phone randomly loses signal every few minutes, gets it back a few minutes later.
Sometimes when it loses signal, it shows a SIM error or no SIM installed icon.
Battery meter varies wildly.
Actions taken:
Purchased new battery.
Tried another known good SIM (my wife's SIM - worked great in her phone).
Flashed WM 6.0 and 6.1
Result: Look at my sig
Anyone else experience this or have any ideas on how to fix? I don't even need the phone anymore, but it still stumps me and annoys me that such an expensive phone (it was expensive when I bought it 2.5 years ago) would suddenly quit working.
Thanks for the reply - at least I'm not the only one. Not that it helps, but .... did your Dash ever work when you first bought it?
Worked wonderfully for a year. I loved it. It started my addiction to smartphones and constant connectivity.

Mobile Network Drop

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but i randomly get mobile network drops once or twice a week. The phone works perfectly well but the mobile network just drops, you cannot scan for network at all. The only way i have found around it is to enable plane mode to drop all connections and then turn plane mode back off so the network starts up. This often takes between 5 - 10 mins for it to kick in.
Tried two roms but now back to stock but still happening.
Have you tried flashing the latest radio? They are listed in the dev section.
The recent OTA 1.21.405.2 update included a new radio I think. Did you put this on too?
Since then, I have also been having the network drop out. I am missing a lot of calls as a result. Prior to this update I had two months of problem-free operation on my stock 2.1 ROM.
From reading the google forums, this is a wide-spread issue. The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be that people updating to 2.2 froyo seem to see the problem stop. Two weeks to wait for us stock ROM boys according to the rumours then! Fingers crossed.
It's a bit embarrassing having this flashy toy when it struggles to be a phone at random intervals. At the weekend one of my less techy friends was waving his Nokia 6210i in my face saying, "At least I can make and recieve calls!". So I changed the language on his phone to Turkish when he left it lying about. The old ones are the best.
I am going to test the 1.21.405.2 theory by doing a factory reset later this week when I have time. Problem should persist if it is the new radio. Will post back with the results.
OK did a factory reset this morning. I left all my apps off, and did not set back up any google account business. I basically left it as a standard mobile phone.
Within 7 hours, guess what....yes it's lost the connection again. Strongly believe this is a radio problem. I'm too noob to know if I can flash the radio without rooting. Anyone?
I have since submitted my complaint with HTC CS. Will await their response, and post it here.
In the interim, turning airplane mode off and on again does regain the connection, and I have installed an app from the market place called "No Coverage Alert". It will now beep and buzz if I loose the connection so at least I will be aware every time it bombs out. Far from ideal but should do for now.
Watch this space.
Yes i have tried the two radios posted but i havent tried any international ones such as europe or asia. I still randomly get network drop and i need to turn radio off and back on again for it to pick up.
Maybe i should ask a chef if these drops are logged anywhere on the device so i can root in and look at the logs myself and diagnose what the network drop is on my phone.
Just to confirm, tried multiple radios and roms, i know exactly what i am doing all i would like is explaination of why it happens. It is not user error as i have tried with stock rom, no fancy apps etc to stop it from working or changing config.
its got something to do with the network radio libs that need a service restart. i am 100% sure if i rooted in and knew which service to restart it would work also
Erm.... this is a little embarrassing but I feel I need to own up to prevent misleading anyone. I have arranged with HTC customer support to send my Desire back for repair. They pick it up Monday.
I bought a cheap £10 phone to keep me going. It arrived this morning. After I had finished laughing at it, I put the SIM card in and powered up the phone.
"No SIM card instered" was the message it greeted me with. After numerous power-up and power downs, and some SIM card hoakee-coakee, it finally recognised the SIM card......then dropped the signal to Orange. EXACTLY what my HTC Desire did.
Doh.
I had tried the SIM card in another phone (my girlfriends Blackberry) when the problems first started and it had worked straight away. But the SIM card seems to be random in it's failures. Should have tested more rigorously.
Sorry guys but in my instance it seems I have simply a faulty SIM card. The first one I have ever had go wrong in 12 years, but there you go. I was too fast to blame Android/HTC.
A|ex, please try your SIM card in another handset. Do several power-ups to see if it goes wrong. Would explain why trying numerous radios/ROMs has not helped you.
Let me know?
I had the same issue. Talked all day and evening, then toyed around with the phone a little, flashed a new ROM, no connection. oO okay, that's weird. Tried 3 different ROMs, reset to factory settings. Went to Orange, the SIM was borked. Thankfully, getting a new one took all of 5 minutes and didn't cost me a dime.
Yep. Was the SIM card. The new one arrived from Orange this morning. Popped it in and it's working straight away. My 3G has even improved slightly I reckon.
Six hours of use and not one drop yet.
Thank god for that.

[Q] no cell service with activated SIM card

Alright, here's my issue. I got the phone unlocked about three months ago, worked perfectly. I get great signal with AT&T, always have. I don't have a data plan or anything, phone gets wifi fine.
One day I stopped getting cell service. It appeared on the phone as the circle with the line through it. I thought it was odd since I always get good signal. Still got wifi fine. Took the SIM out and put it in my nokia, full bars. Tried playing around with the APN settings, nothing. Reformatted the phone, nothing.
Went and talked with an AT&T guy and he gave me a new SIM card. He put it in my phone, unactivated, and it worked great, showed up with full service. Once he activated the SIM, it went back to saying no service. It doesn't say no SIM, just that I don't have any signal at all.
When I take the SIM out and power on the phone, I get the no SIM error and it shows that I have full signal. Once I put it in, nothing.
Right now I am just using it as a wifi device. I am not really sure what I should do, and I can't return the phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
my wife's Glide is getting the same problem behavior as outlined in this thread. With a new phone, new SIM and new battery we see the no network icon and Service State=unknown in phone status. No sim card error anymore, just no network. I'm going to take the phone in to the warranty center for another new battery and SIM card. I'm not optimistic. Add to that ever since we got the Glide, the phone would not ring or show missed calls sometimes when people really did call.
The AT&T warranty center offered my wife a different phone (new) as a replacement, but the Glide is the only decent Android phone with a keyboard and she has to have a keyboard.

Phone no longer making or taking calls?

D851, has been 100% fine until recently. Wife & I have exact same phone & RRemix N ROMs installed. Mine shows I have LTE connection w/ TMo, I can make calls, but no audio, and same when taking calls on phone. Have tried wiping, switching from 30D to 30E, etc, no joy.
Data is working 100%, just not phone calls.
I just bought this phone new a few months ago, & have treated it with care. Any suggestions on what I can do to remedy this?

Have you tried taking it back to them to check it? Maybe the sim card slot is broken.
Turns out mine was a hardware issue, took it in & they discovered that the contacts on the headphone jack that mate to the motherboard had corrosion on them. After they were cleaned off, good as new.
Good luck!
