[Q] If I purchase the google play edition, will I receive quickly any update? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi, I want a phone with Android stock, and good specs, I was thinking about a Samsung Galaxy S4 GOOGLE play edition, but I'd like to know, if anyone from here have it, and if it's like having a Nexus, where all the updates will be received as soon as Google release them, and not like Samsung that I must wait months for them? thanks in advanced.

Updates to your phone's operating system are released by your cellphone carrier, not Samsung. Samsung releases their updates, which are then modified by each phone company to meet their unique needs, and then are released.
Some phone companies are better than others about releasing updates. Phones in Europe tend to get updated first, which allows people in the US to load those international ROMs, but they usually are missing the US carriers' special "features" (sometimes known as "bloatware"). Of course, you have to be rooted and willing to accept the risk associated with loading third-party ROMs to use those in the US.
For example, the international version of the latest ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S4 works on US phones, but does not have T-Mobile's wifi calling feature because T-Mobile has not yet released their version. Other carriers have released their version of that update, but T-Mobile has not.

So,does that mean that, even If I get an "Android stock" phone, it depends on my carrier to receive or not the latest updates? thanks, sorry for the lack of knowledge regarding this!

No, he is incorrect for the Google Play Edition Galaxy S4, if you buy the Play edition, you will get the latest Android version about a week or two after nexus devices receive them, since it is contract free, no carrier can control the updates. Instead, Google gives the code to Samsung and they then release the update for the Play edition S4.

Yup, Google gives Samsung the latest Android version and then they work on it to add some additional features, such as S-view functionality and they release it normally a week or two after nexus devices, which is much faster than the normal S4.

But they do not convert it to TouchWiz right? I know that there is the HTC One Google play and the Nexus 4 as well, but I guess the most powerful between these is the S4 right now, do you know if all the Samsung Galaxy Note 3's comes with Android stock? I read something about it, but this is offtopic really, thanks!

Technically it is touchwiz without the theme, Samsung basically uses the touchwiz framework but use the stock AOSP theme instead of their own, but it will NOT look like touchwiz, it only uses the framework, but will look like AOSP, and the user interface on the Nexus 4. No, the Galaxy Note 3 will not come with stock Android, it will come with touchwiz and all its features that Samsung has planned for it. Unless they release a Google Play Edition of the Note 3.

Do you know if this Google Play S4 is as "open" as the Nexus in which an Ubuntu version can be installed without major problems? thanks!

Have a few questions about Galaxy Nexus

I currently have a HTC Incredible 2, and my contract is almost up, and so I was thinking of getting the Galaxy Nexus for Verizon.
Anyways have some questions about it.
1) Since the Verizon version is currently only running 4.0.2 and not the latest version, I was wondering if the unlocked version official 4.0.4 ROM will work on the Verizon one? If not would it be easy for a developer to just port the official ROM to it, so it will the Verizon Nexus will run exactly as it should(the unlocked Nexus) without bugs?
2) Does ICS have a T9 dialer built in? With my HTC Incredible 2 I can just dial someone I want by typing in the first letters of there names with the dialer.
3) Will we except to get a delay just like the Nexus S 4G had, for when we get Jellybean(when the next Nexus comes out). And will it run slow just like since Nexus S runs ICS pretty horribly right now.
1. i believe verizon does have 4.0.4 updates out, if not you can flash the official update manually.
2. yes it has T9 dialer included.
3. We should be the one of the first phones to get Jellybean.
So if it does have the 4.0.4 updates out, then why do people still complain that it doesn't?

No, ROMS are not compatible from CDMA to GSM versions and vice versa. It will severely mess up your device.
There are leaked 4.0.4 builds for the CDMA model, but again they're not official, just leaks. That's why people are complaining.

There are 3rd party replacement dialers. The stock dialer doesn't do this, and is a highly requested feature from Sense (which you have).

Well the current situation shows that the CDMA model will get updates a bit slower than the GSM model. This is just going to happen since Verizon has to do their own testing and add their own network stack to what Google approves and moves out. It won't be a HUGE delay, but it'll be there. Think of it this way: Google isn't going to hold back a GSM update if the CDMA one isn't ready to go. When one's done, they'll release it.
Now remember, CDMA and GSM models don't need the same fixes/changes. As we noted above, the ROMs are not compatible. They are different devices when it comes to network connections (obviously). Fixes for one are not fixes for the other. Just because one gets 4.0.4 doesn't mean the other will. It may get 4.0.5 or .6, then GSM will get 4.1 and CDMA will get 4.1.1, etc...
As far as Jellybean goes, who knows? No one knows what the requirements will be or how long it'll take to get onto the GNex. It'll be slower, no doubt, but one of the reasons ICS is "slow" on the Nexus S is that Gingerbread to ICS was a HUGE jump. We don't know how big that jump will be to Jellybean.
About the leaks would you say they run just as well as the official 4.0.4 that is out on the unlocked Galaxy Nexus phones?

I dunno I don't have a Verizon device (so glad for many reasons) so you'd have to ask them. It is a leak and not official, and it was leaked quite a bit ago, so its far from prime time ready.
Some other stuff I wanted to ask are the 4.0.4 ROMs for this device stable just like the official ROM is? Like AOKP or CyanongeMod 9 will they run stable on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus so we can get 4.0.4?

It will never be as stable as stock 4.0.4 when it OTAs. As I said they're integrating a leaked build and also commits from the GSM 4.0.4 update. Its a Frankenstein type of deal. There will undoubtedly be bugs.

Well the main reason I want a Galaxy Nexus for is to not even put in custom ROMS. Cause sorry to say but lots of times they are just really buggy and non stable compared to the OTA updates. They could be better such as having a newer version of Android in it but also buggy as well. I just want something that works, and that's why I decided to get the Nexus.

Yeah but custom roms on a nexus are a little different than custom roms on other devices cause the full code is available. Not true with other devices. Nothing is hidden so no hacks are needed to get things to work. Custom roms can be coded as good as stock rom if the devs want.
Did some research and found out that Verizon controls the Galaxy Nexus updates and not Google. But why does Apple control the Verizon's iPhone updates, and not Verizon? Couldn't Google do the same?
Because Verizon bends over for Apple.

You would think so. But Google just bent over to get Verizon to play ball. Corp bull**** at its finest. Apple just has the balls to say my way or go screw yourself. Sigh...
Would you say that it would be a smart choice to get the Galaxy Nexus in August? Because I am either going to get that phone, or maybe I should wait to see what the iPhone 5 is?

[Q] Will the S4 Google Edition Make it Easier for Developers to Develop AOSP Roms?

I don't know much about hacking...I always root my Android phones, but I dont actually do any developing.
So anyway, I have a question. Now that the GS4 Google Edition has been announced, would it be easier for developers to port the AOSP Rom from the Google Edition GS4 over to the regular edition?
If so, people on Verizon and Sprint shouldnt have to worry about getting it and people who have or want to buy the At&T and T-mobile S4 at a subsidized price would pretty much be able to have the GS4 Google Edition just by rooting it.
If the GE has the same cpu, it should be compatible with our s4's right from the get go. And yes, it will give AOSP devs an official AOSP base to build from instead of building from scratch.

the REAL questions:
1) will Samsung proprietary optimizations be part of the GE software?
2) what about wifi calling?
3) ...and bluetooth... what kind of bluetooth will be included and will drivers be proprietary?
the stuff that only worked in touchwiz based roms for the US GS III variants may have to be open sourced or simply left out.

Thats what they are saying, if they add it to the GE version, then it will most likely be made open source. Unless Google and T-Mo come up with some contract/deal. But more than likely, i see the wifi calling feature made open source. That would be nice. Now i can't decide if i should get my S4 now or wait for the GE. I sure hope they make the GE one match perfectly to the original T-Mo one. That way T-Mo handset users can benefit from the plethora of support for AOSP. Im a huge CM10.1 user myself.

1) Like all the fancy TW "features"? Doubt it.
2)No, it's not available on the N4 on T-Mobile not to mention that the GES4 isn't specifically made for T-Mobile
3)Supposedly 4.3 will have support for BT4.0, which the N4 is physically capable of but stock android doesn't support yet.

Galaxy Nexus Gets Updated GPU Binaries, To Breath Life into the Two-Year Old Phone

As always, XDA is up to some good stuff with a new release of Android now available. Some developers are finding what appears to be updated binaries for the GPU that’s inside the Galaxy Nexus. KitKat was announced last week, and surprisingly, Google decided to drop support for the Galaxy Nexus. It’s surprising because KitKat can run on devices with 256MB of RAM, which the Galaxy Nexus has a full gigabyte of RAM available. We’ve already seen numerous custom ROMs flowing out for KitKat on the Galaxy Nexus. And it’s not just for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, but also the Verizon (Toro) and Sprint (Toroplus) versions.
It appears that Texas Instruments have updated the GPU binaries for the Galaxy Nexus. Now, Google may not have known that TI was going to update it or Google may not have told TI that they had given up on the two-year old device. But either way, developers are hard at work building an updated kernel that might help solve some of the graphical issues with KitKat on the Galaxy Nexus.
If you’re one of those many people out there still rocking the Galaxy Nexus, and not wanting to give it up just yet. It looks like you might get Christmas a bit early. As the new GPU binaries should definitely help out the Galaxy Nexus. Although, if you’ve held onto it this long, you’re probably due for an upgrade, since the device was released in November 2011. Hopefully this will help people get a long a bit more until the device finally chokes.
This is another reason why we love the developer community around Android. You won’t find a developer community like this behind the iPhone or anything iOS related. Back before I started here at AH, I had a couple of devices in which the manufacturer had given up on the device, but developers had continued to support it for years. Which was quite nice.
Is it real? It would be a big deal !
Do any ROM developers confirm it yet?

I think you guys are being a bit melodramatic. You have a perfectly functional tablet that doesn't have any outwardly obvious bugs or other problems. I bet you use it with no problems. Sure, it's nice to have the latest update, but it's not like you have significantly outdated software that limits your usage of the tablet. And should 4.4 land on this tab (for the record, I think it will), you guys will be happy for all of about 5 minutes and move on with your day. And of course as soon as a new minor update drops, the *****fest will begin again.
I am running custom build 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S4. Outside of some UI tweaks and ART, it brings nothing significant to the table.

There are many reasons why HTC is failing, but if this is even a reason, it's an insignificant one. Samsung has never been truly up to date on updates, yet they are second only to Apple in the amount of high-end devices sold. Most people, myself included don't really care whether we are on the latest version. We just care that our devices perform well and do what we need them to do. I only complain if an update screws something up.
And lets be honest here: you are running the latest version of all of the Google Apps. It's not like you are stuck on Gingerbread and being on Jelly Bean does not limit you in any way. KitKat will not boost your battery life, will likely not make your device faster, and does not add any significant features that would make a difference in your usage of the device. So what's the real issue? Because it's not that you are unhappy with your tablet.

I wish that was the case but it's not. I'm on the AT&T variant, and I'm still on 4.1.2. I have screen freezes (real and documented) and battery life isn't great. With that said, I haven't piled on the *****fest. But no matter what, this device really needs to get upgraded. I blame AT&T more than Sammy, but there is no reason why I should still be on 4.1.2 with a device that was announced in June 2013 with absolutely no word on when we'll get an update (either to 4.2, 4.3, or KK). That's pretty shameful. And with no releases of any kinds of source code or device info, we have no unlocked bootloader or custom ROMs. So, I'm basically on 2013 hardware with 2012 code.

I fully understand your concern. I have the Wifi-only tab and am on 4.2. I did not experience your issues with 4.1 but I do know that others have. The thing is, problems have to get fixed, and it's a shame that you are still dealing with them. I don't know if it's AT&T or Samsung in your case that's at fault though. My point was more to the effect that I don't care for software updates just for the sake of having a slight bump in version number.

Agreed. I am on the At&t Note 8.0 variant also and I too have freezes and lag. With that being said I know that At&t and Samsung don't have the best business relationship dye At&t loyalty to Apple. So an update may or may not come. If it does let's hope that At&t don't block or rip it up like they do with all Samsung updates

I got wifi only and I get freezes. The way to unfreeze is to turn the orientation of the note to landscape from horizontal and vice versa. I really wish for an update to fix that. And Yes htc has tons of problems but I believe the slow ass updates were the biggest driver of their customers (at least those who root their devices) to Samsung. Those people are also quite influential with their peers on recommendations

Considering we're still only on 5.0.2 and 5.1.1 has been out for many months I'd feel there is little chance this year if ever. A custom ROM will be our best bet. Also be careful what you wish for as you still see many posts from people reverting to KitKat while Lollipop has been great for me.

M is supposed to be optimized and with several improvements in comparison to LP.
So if it can run LP than it will fly with M.
It's Samsung obligation to provide Android M, because of the 2 year firmware support. No excuses are accepted!
Being fed up with all my Samsung devices firmware sluggish and dated updates, I'm considering in the future moving to Nexus or Apple.
Samsung, please don't ask premium prices, and then provide the cheapest support.
I agree @pacc I think I will move on to one plus LG and nexus my next device wont be samsung
I read the other day that galaxy tab 4 is receiving android 5.1.1 around now , so I'm hoping the tab S will get it too...anything else doesn't make sense; both devices released around the same time, and tab S is the premium one...
As for M, that just wild speculation. My money is on "no, we won't get that"

IMHO, and I'm no expert just an end user, Android and Apple bite. Not ONE Android based device I have is capable of browsing the internet with the same functionality as Chrome, Firefox or IE. Facebook apps are lame at best and I prefer the interface we are given with a browser over any of the apps. I'm not going to buy any future Android based devices. I totally refuse to purchase anything from Apple after being stung buying an iPOD years ago.
So IF I ever buy another tablet, and that's pretty doubtful, it will be Windows based, cell phone too.
Samsung, Asus, Rockchip devices using Android....no more of my money....
Samsung suckered me in with a great price for awesome hardware but I am more educated now I would never buy a Samsung these days. I originally installed a custom ROM because I got tired of all the lag and bugs of Tab S stock kitkat. Expensive lesson as now my knox is tripped.. Samsung probably isn't excited to release software because everyone is wiping to get rid of lag then never reporting into their service. I lasted two months.. I would type a sentence then wait as it slowly came out, it was epic bad lag.
I lasted 2 days and tjen wiped and flashed a custom rom lol I guess thats the reason why they dont update

They may be using Tab 4 as a test before putting their eggs in the basket with the Tab S.
I must have lower expectations of my tab than you guy`s, I am still on kitkat and apart from rooting to get full microsd access i have had no problems at all, I don't care about updates they seem to cause more problems than they are worth.
John.
Great devices totally ruined by that crappy samsung software
