Very laggy Sprint Gnex - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have the Sprint Gnex. It has been laggy with every ROM I have installed. Lag can happen throughout the day to a couple times a week. It is fine for a week or two when new. I went from stock to teambaked black to stock ota 4.2.1(whatever the latest Sprint OTA is) to commotio B57 4.3 then did the update to B59 9-19? Bluetooth using GooManager. Except for the last update I always did a complete erase when loading a new ROM and the only data I carried over was from SMSBackup and Restore App.
Sometimes when loading the camera the camera buttons will be at the top left for several seconds and the screen black when in portrait mode . Restarting multiple times, airplane mode on/off, and overclocking dont change anything. Every button press will take several seconds to load, I never get a low ram warning. Only several apps are used mainly daily.
Am I doing something wrong? How do I stop the lag?

Weird. I have had mine lag from time to time, but a reboot freshens it up and so does Advanced Task Killer. I find things running snappy and quick when I have around 100-200 MB free of RAM. When I get down to ~30 or so MB free, things slow to a crawl like you described. I wonder if you have a bunch of apps running in the background...anything atypical there? (if you go to Settings | Apps | swipe over to Running). How much free RAM do you currently have while having those symptoms?
Also I have found the Facebook app is always running even though I have all abilities for it to sync turned off. I'm so close to uninstalling it and using the browser.

I had lag phone too (Sprint Gnex). I put 10.2CM on it and it runs lag free.

Everytime that I have looked at the Apps folder before there has been 80-100MB free. There are no cached processes but last night I watched it for a couple minutes and it dropped to 30MB. I noticed about 50% of the apps showed restarting all at once. There are 16 Apps running with 8 being system processes. Facebook takes up the most at 40MB. On a fresh restart it dropped as low as 100MB as various apps loaded then exited and it is now hovering at 152MB. 10 mins later with only disabling notifications for RetailMeNot and Google Offers and disabling the Apex Launcher it is down to 77MB with 36MB in cashed processes.
I might try a stable CM like user readable mentioned.

lag on motorola defy!

my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

My Defy was lagging until I rooted and installed SetVSel. Now its running as breeze with Stock Indian Froyo.
stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.
lag on defy
with rootunistaller i`ve frozen skype and yahoo and i haven`t had any lag since. If i want 2 use them "defrost" and when i`m finished i just "freeze" back the app

Lag on defy
Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???
thanks a lot guys for ur replies!!
but the thing is my phone has become even slower!!
when i first switch on the phone i have around 240MB free RAM but just after an hour everything becomes too slow, even opening of the menu! and after 2-3 hours of usage it keeps on reducing and finally reaches as low as 40MB .....
what could be causing this??
i have android assistant by which i clear cache, ram still it doesnt help....

Is it normal for a phone to slow down after awhile?

I've experienced this issue twice now wherein my phone would get extremely slow and laggy to the point that it's unbearable to use anymore and the only solution was a reboot. Launcher keeps on restarting, messaging app takes 5 seconds to open, camera is lagging etc and this is after a week of uptime at least.
Why does this happen in the first place and am I the only one experiencing this? I've been running only maguro milestone 5 and franco for the past month, no other roms whatsoever. Once I power down and reboot everything becomes nice and fast again.
Never happened to me on stock.
I'd say it's "normal" for a phone to slow down over time as you add apps and things, but it should never slow down to a crawl and start crashing until you reboot.

normal for it to slow down a bit but not like how you described it. i'm running stock though.
It's not normal. Install some monitoring tool like "OS Monitor" and run it when the problem happens to find out the culprit.
Oh and installing multiple apps will not slow down the phone. This is not Windows 95.

lol at the windows 95 comment
although the # of apps you have alone shouldnt slow your phone down, if you have a ton of apps running in the background eating up ram it may slow down if the available free ram you have is really really low
when your phone is laggy check the ram first
Thanks guys I'll try OS monitor to see what's running. It just happened again right now and this is getting annoying, even typing is laggy but after a reboot everything is normal again.
Kill background apps.

So far I have not had that issue. Probably like everyone else said. There is some run away app that's eating up your memory

Its not normal, but aokp does have a bug. Check your system process in system panel, it grows larger over time if you use lock screen options etc.

Ics completely slowing down my phone

So last week i flash in installed ics for the first time and since then my phone has froze at least 5 times a day to the point that i have to pull the battery. When ever i go to the stock task manager and go to "RAM" tab the ram is always around 550mb-600mb when i only have a few apps running, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. and when i go to "Clear RAM it closes 20+ app.
Is anyone else having this problems? Im running Fe16.
And also whenever i go to the battery tab in the setting the screen takes up 65% of the battery, i also have the brightness a little more than 1/4 of the way up. Is that a bug or will it be like that in the offical build of ics.
They are leaked builds they are fun to try but they just are not reliable enough for use IMHO

Increasing lag over time, background apps crashing and restarting?

I have had a problem that's grown worse over time with my G2. I've noticed the phone will be snappy, fresh after flashing, but over time, it will start to slow down. I chalked it up to it just needing a good flash every once in a while. However, it's gotten to the point it will become laggy/unresponsive within a day or two now. During these periods of lag I have managed to make it struggle to the running applications screen, where I have noticed that the lag is correlated with background applications restarting themselves. Google maps, Google Voice, and Waze are usually restarting (sometimes a few times before becoming stable), and I think Imo messenger might be doing the same. Once all the background apps are done restarting, everything returns to normal. I notice these apps all require some sort of radio use, and that the app I am actively using usually will only slow down, but not crash.

I have very similar issue. Soundhound oo, maps, Droid are trying to restart when it happens... I think it might be because we run out of memory... but I don't know why Android try to restart those processes so hard then.
Forgot to say I have a Galaxy S with CM 10.1
For me most of these issues go away once I set limit of background processes to 2. Even application install doesn't hand phone as before. OC also helps I guess.

Extremely Slow UI

So i really love the look, feel, options and performance of a clean fresh install of AOKP. However, the more apps i install and use the slower the performance of the UI gets. It slowly gets unbearable, seemingly, as i add back my apps that i like. Is this normal? I've tried a memory manager called Auto Memory Manager but that didn't seem to help at all. Is this just a consequence of having lots of apps installed? It's almost like i'm on an old windows machine and it needs to have a clean install every couple of months to get the "snappy" ui feel back. It bad enough sometimes where it takes the phone 5-10 seconds to actually answer a call once I click answer and 5 seconds to get to the home screen. What can i do?

Yes, and from my perspective it's because many apps you install tend to automatically start as you e.g. power up the phone, turn on WiFi/data, etc. and then they keep running and taking CPU time and RAM in the background. Common task killers won't solve this easily. Best way to verify is to stop everything possible from Settings-Apps-Running.

yes and no, yes if you install apps that sit in the background and start using data, check for updates constantly like facebook, the best thing to do is to use greenify and greenify that app so that it doesnt wake up your device and start eating ram n data. also note that if u do this to messenger apps you wont get notifications unless you open the app

I've got all my apps up and runnign on Vanir now, and i will agree that it is far snappier than AOKP. However it has frozen on me twice. And i mean a hard freeze. Screen got stuck, audio looping on last few milisecs of sound and i had to pull the battery to get it out of the freeze.
Today, i got the first dose of it being slow like AOKP again. It was while it was charging in my car dock and i was trying to dial a phone number using rocket dial.
What are some typical apps that i should try to greenify? Sounds like i shouldn't greenify anything i want notificatinos from like phone, messaging and email. Anything else i should greenify or not greenify? Any tips on the freezing?

wow thats very weird ! one thing ive noticed is that if your internal storage (sdcard) space is less than 5 gb the phone tends to slow down. im guessing you fall under this criteria. ive never had any lags or freezes on vanir's builds till today, if you want the most stable build of 4.3 its the 26/10/2013 nightly by newclearmistake. ive found that as the most stable one and reliable one till now
