my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

My Defy was lagging until I rooted and installed SetVSel. Now its running as breeze with Stock Indian Froyo.
stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.

with rootunistaller i`ve frozen skype and yahoo and i haven`t had any lag since. If i want 2 use them "defrost" and when i`m finished i just "freeze" back the app

Lag on defy
Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???
thanks a lot guys for ur replies!!
but the thing is my phone has become even slower!!
when i first switch on the phone i have around 240MB free RAM but just after an hour everything becomes too slow, even opening of the menu! and after 2-3 hours of usage it keeps on reducing and finally reaches as low as 40MB .....
what could be causing this??
i have android assistant by which i clear cache, ram still it doesnt help....

I see that when a task killer stops a program (cityid, stocks, etc) I can look right back in there and see it running again and in a minute the page is full again of the same apps that I just killed. Even with autokill on they start while the screen is off. I want to know if anyone has figured out what file or service keeps starting these and if there is an edit to it to tell them to quit it ? I am not comfortable with a device that I do not have control of stuff that starts and goes online by itself. Thanks.

If you're not comfortable with a device you do not have full control of, looks like rooting is for you
Seriously though, rooting your device is the ONLY way to remove City ID, Stocks, etc. from your device. HOWEVER.
You should probably break yourself of the task killer habit. Lifehacker explains it all here: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them.
In a nutshell, Android is actually really good at preserving memory, and killing apps that will keep popping up drains battery faster. The reason they keep popping up is Android is trying to predict what you're going to use next based on what you just did (or something like that), so potentially anything you have installed that is there on startup will hit that list.
I tried using Watchdog as the article said, but honestly I found in the end I just wanted more control. unrevoked 3.21 and several ROM tries later I'm happy with where I'm at
EDIT: I see by your sig that you have rooted your Dinc.. therefore, it's a very simple process if you want to get rid of the app entirely. If you want to leave it installed, you're not going to find a solution to the constant opening - Android is what Android is.
Most of the apps you see in the task list are not active. They're just loaded in memory so they can launch faster when you need them.
Like the previous poster pointed out, task killers are counter productive. You just get a continuous cycle with the app launching and being killed. Launching again and being killed again. And on and on.
Best just to leave android alone to do what it was designed to do.
If you still feel the need to be more in control use app autostarts. It allows you to block the initial app launch and block based on events.

Mostly what I want to do is,,,,
,,,To stop applications that come on by themselves and log in even when you set in their settings to not do it, like Skype. I do use Skype to do a calll with a bunch of friends from school, but I want to start it when I want to use it, I am all the time having skype calls come in when I have not even launched the app. I figure that if it is listening for a call then it is useing power needlessly. I do not want to have to log out every time I want it to stop, I just want to close it and it behave and stop useing power. Many apps do that and I think it is a major reason for low battery life. My battery will not hold up a full shift at work, but if I kill the GPS and the 3G the thing has been up for 22 hours and is still at 66% and I have talked for over 2 hours today on the phone, so I think that if more control is gained over app behaviour then we can be happier with our batteries ;-)

You hit the nail on the head there. It's not the apps killing your battery, it's the 3g and gps.
I leave my wifi on all the time but have it set to disconnect if the phone is idle for 15 min. Bluetooth, gps, and 3g are always turned off except when I need them.

I only got the phone 2 days ago, coming from a Nokia 5800 (which I loved), its worlds apart and a very worthy upgrade. I'm totally new to Android and everything about it, but I'm fairly sure I've digested enough information over the past 2 days to set my phone up properly.
So for any other n00bs, this is some of the info I've setup on mine.
Rooting
This is a must, the z4root (1.3 version) app will take care of your permanent rooting needs. Be sure to leave the "USB Debugging mode" on for ever.
Blur
Love it, keep it, I don't think there's any performance hit with it running. But if you don't like it, don't go to the lengths of removing all the apk's manually - just don't register/sign-up when the phone is very first turned on (or if the phone is set-up, then you can backup with TB and factory reset the data, but don't set-up Blur).
Overclocking and undervolting (ie. Battery!)
800MHz doesn't *quite* cut it, the phone is a little laggy and unresponsive. The app to get first is SetVSEL (on Android market), I've got mine setup and stable with:
300MHz / 26
600MHz / 34
1100MHz / 58
And a priority of 60%. Then enable the setting to limit to VSEL1 when the screen is off. A priority any higher than 60% makes the phone really lag when trying to turn the screen back on/answer calls etc. from an idle state.
This took the phone immediately from a 5hr maximum battery life on idle to over 13 hours (still not impressive, but miles better!).
Then upgrade the ROM to the JIT enabled version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893291
Backing Up
Titanium backup pro - worth it, get scheduled backups set up and sign up for a free dropbox account (link - http db.tt/fxOD4Zf) for online backup storage.

5 hour battery life on idle... that's why people don't like Blur!
I don't use any Blur widgets at all - although I have't removed them - and on the stock ROM will easily get 2 days battery life on idle, hell I can get 2 days with moderate usage!

Agree!
If you are coming from U.S. t-mobile, there is no way you can bypass Blur, other than flash to "foreign firmware".
Once you registered and use Blur, you got bunch of useless app running on the background, news/weather/social and etc that can NOT be stopped, unless you root and remove them. ( it seems to be constantly u/d link your status to the world, I rather have my own privatcy control )
Blur Contact also another quick way to confuse the crap out of my contact and produce annoying double list.
Plus, unless you are on Froyo, you don't get to disable "Data Enabled" under Data Delivery. ( yes, you can install APNdroi or similar app to stop Data access when not in used, but it will just be another program running on the background )
Anyway, I really appreciate all these genius in the forum who creats so many different custom ROM and firmware for me to "upgrade".
I don't think it is possible to skip the blur account setup.
Other then that I am not convinced that any deep customization is necessary to make the DEFY a great phone.
I rooted the phone to rename/remove some unnecessary apps (e.g. amazonmp3). but after the earpiece problem I got my phone back with the original firmware restored. because I was lazy I didn't bother rooting and renaming/deleting. just installed launcher pro and advanced task killer. result: same performance improvements as with the rooted one before!
I just run a quadrant benchmark: 1073 points!
note that my defy is not really de-blured. I just installed launcher pro to stop that terrible blur launcher. even my task killer settings are conservative.
battery life is also not that bad: weekdays it is just a bit over a day (~30h). weekends depending on what I do. this weekend I am sitting home and still have 40% battery after having it disconnected from charger on friday morning.
bottom line: rooting is recommended to do some maintenance stuff (backups, firewall, etc.). using an alternative launcher is a MUST (launcher pro works best for me, but there are others too). however, renaming or deleting apps is not a good idea because of the heavy system integration of blur crap motorola did.

hey just a tip, install recovery, or, as your phone is just very young.
connect it to a power plug everytime when charging (not pc-usb, real power supply) and let i load as long as possible (3-4 hours max is enough) try to repeat this process 3-6 times and you'll get the maximum battery life.
works great! :=)
i resetted my battery stats once after a rom upgrade and the battery lasted for about as u said, 3-5 hours... i thought that i had destroyed my phone or similar, but after these complete charges, everything worked as it should again
would suggest it for any power driven device
My handset has the custom Defy recovery installed already (first thing) as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893291
Its only charged off mains power, but to be honest, I've only had it 3 days now, and I've been using it so much in the past day tweaking it, that I haven't had a chance to see what I'll get our of it.
Those talking about de-bluring, theres a really easy non-root method to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943134
You don't realyl need to OverClock unléess you're playing a game on PSX4DROID...
i use 1200 mhz @ 58 and it's quite stable tbh. Haven't done much testing but the temp stays at 42°c
I'm actually concerned about the temperature of CPU...how high can it go until cou is likely to get effected?
I am a noob too. I came from spica, so i used android before and flashed some roms, but i only playing for the Defy for a day and i have some question. I bought one with 2.21 DE with blur, the phone was fast but the unlock slider lagged like hell, and after a call, the call summary was displayed for at least 10-15 seconds.
I flashed a 2.51 CE firmware on the device and it is generally much faster, but the call summary is still locking the phone for too long time(I rooted the phone overclocked, factory reseted done everything, but nothing helps, somtimes it is better after restart). Does anyone knows why?
Another thing, i know that 2.51 is undowngradeable.I read that i cannot flash most of the cooked ROMS and the chineese and beta froyo ROMs, but th phone is fast, and i got enough of cooked and alfa, beta ROMs during my spica period, and no way i want to go back to 2.21 so that is not a problem, but when the official UK or CE Froyo comes out, i will be able flash the sbf with RSD lite or I am locked to that firmware forever? And if someone updated the Defy to 2.51 with OTA, not RSD lite made the Defy undowngradeble?
Sorry for the lot of talk and thank you for your answers in advance
Just a note if you update to the new Blur you won't be able to use z4root. You need Super1Click (ver 2.51). Here is a post on it from Moto. https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/44255?start=0&tstart=0 And here is another from XDA. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11151470#post11151470

Press the Menu button (the hardware button with the 4 squares) and a menu pops up with "Skip Setup" listed. ^^
very good info, will try Titanium Backup Pro
You can use the phone without being logged into Blur. Shut the phone off and then go to myblur.com and change your password. Follow the directions and when done turn the phone back on and you will get an error that either the user ID or PW is wrong. All the other functions will work. For me the phone seemed real laggy running like this as it was trying to call home all the time.

Yeah there is something wrong then if that is happening. I use a Defy and a DHD, and days I only use the DHD, and let my Defy just sit there, it can go three days before it even gets to 80%.
3 days before it gets to 80% ....yeah right
my defy eats 5-10% per 6hours in idle ... and thats at 300/16vsel setting, stock 2.1 rom, and skipped blur setup
and with moderate use ...i get around 48hours out of it
so how could yours be at 80% after 3days being idle is beyond me ...what rom are u using & what idle settings?
Mine only uses 4% battery when idle for 8 hours over night with the alarm clock programmed to go off so i guess that would be around 12% / 24 hours if left in standby / idle.
Running stock 2.1 but overclocked and undervolted with setvsel.
300 / 20
700 / 32
1100 / 56
75% threshold.
I also use droidwall to enable only what i want to access wifi or data but not sure if that would help when the phone is idle.
I use
300/16
600/36
1000/56
80%threshold
droidwall wouldnt help me since i dont have 3g connection set up and i only turn wifi on when i need it ...
does your 2.1 rom come with motoblur or without?
I wish my defy would eat only 4% per 8hours =/
Hi,
Yes mine has Blur installed & I normally only have the weather programme running.
I have found that my One X often kills apps I have running when I press the power button and put it away for more than a few minutes. I know Android will try to reclaim resources starting with background apps but this is killing the app I am currently looking at.
I have almost nothing else running and my system normally has 200-300 mb of available memory so it is a very unexpected behaviour. A typical example is I have something like firefox displaying a page. I read a bit then press off. I come back 10 minutes later and it needs to restart and reload the page. With previous phones the app would still be in the foreground the next time I turn it on and unless I navigate away it would stay that way.
I have a nexus s running ICS and that does not happen.
I have a desire running GB and is doesn't hapen.
I have a desire running Froyo and it does not happen.
Is there any way to force a less aggressive memory management on HOX?
There is an option for this, in settings > developer options, furthest down under apps section, first one; "Don't keep activities" check if it is enabled.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
.. also beneath it, there is a restriction "Background process limit", it may also cause immediate kills if "no background process" is set
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Thanks for the suggestions but those were set normally.
Tried using the built in browser instead of firefox and the problem was significantly reduced. It seems the system has a bias against non google apps. Even so - this HOX is behaving different in this respect to my other phones. It is my expectation as a user that if I am doing one thing, that thing should still be there the next time I look at my phone.
Something on the device may be leaking and the result is this need to stop stuff. My money is on sense ( mainly because of the observed ripple/flicker on the home screen ).
I've noticed same with my new one x it seems over eager killing all apps even sense launcher.
settings are correct but using chrome I don't dear open anything else for fear of it closing chrome and having to log back into everything, sometimes its as bad as just answering call or replying to a text message and its been killed
just as annoying it even kills launcher if I press home after using an app for more than a few minutes I get the please wait spinner while it has to load launcher
had ICS on desire HD and on zoom tab... this is not how it should work can't believe a phone with more memory and designed to run ICS is having to kill everything when DHD runs perfect
annoying little thing that is so far ruining what is otherwise an amazing phone
Seeing the same issue on my One S.
This happens with Dark Meadow. If the screen times out, or you hit the lock button, the game kind of "crashes". Not sure if this is the One X killing it or whether it's how the app is coded.
It's irritating anyway ><
Applications with a notification icon have not this behavior. Is there a possibility to set a higher priority to applications without root?
I'm having the same problem.
With cm9 @ Desire Z, I could, say, restore my 3000 sms within GoSMS (which takes a while) and meanwhile do whatever I wanted with the phone, eg. browsing, texting and so on.
With the H1X, after a certain time, the apps gets killed/suspended and therefore anything that happened within the app - which is pretty annoying. Any solution in sight?
H1X @ ARHD
I get this too. Annoying.

Sense launcher closing is not cos of the over-aggressive app killing. It's cos the system needs more RAM, so closes Sense since it's not directly in use right now. I do notice that some apps are getting closed after a period of inactivity, probably a default ICS setting that we can tweak when kernels and ROMs get more mature releases
I'm suffering from this defect as well. It's frankly astonishing that this phone behaves in this way. Really makes you wonder if anyone actually uses the phones before releasing such junk. What use is such fantastic hardware if it performs so badly in real use conditions. Every time I press home, loading. Try to run some javascript Web pages then go send a text, then back to browser and all tabs have to refresh. Mine is going back if it doesn't get fixed pretty quickly as it's practically unusable in this state. Battery is unsatisfactory as well. 2 hours on battery, screen on for an hour, 57% left?! What are they thinking seriously

If your battery is that bad you have a bad app running rampant or your battery is faulty.
For everyone else, even in settings if "Don't keep activities" is unchecked, try checking it and unchecking it. I read that sometimes it is still set to "Don't keep activities" even if it is unchecked and checking and unchecking it could solve the problem if this is the case. Doesn't hurt to try.
Hopefully one of the devs will make a Rom/kernel with better oom adjustments... I'm hoping.
the multitask implementation on this phone is terrible. I was using runkeeper, stopped to check something in my settings during the ride, phone closed the runkeeper application deleting my ride. It is getting annoying ...

Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
Hi All,
Anybody here with the same issue ?
Looks like a software issue/touch unresponsive issue because usually I find it coming back to normal once I press power button and unlock it again.
Sounds like RAM allocation issue, isn't ?
Thinking to sell it. Please suggest if you guys know a better way to deal with it !
Even if I go to SC, I cannot reproduce the issue at that particular time. They will just reset it and give me back, and that where I don't want to waste my time.
Does this looks fruitful to flash stock firmware again by the unbrick way ? I feel like that will be me last try.
You seem new here, so welcome on xda
One thing you should keep in mind is to be as precise as possible when presenting an issue, your description right now is not very clear, by the title it sounded like your phone actually froze, which could have been a ram or even a power management issue, but after reading your post it seems more likely that your display was wet, or that you were charging your phone, capacitive touchscreens are sensible to that.
Usually a frozen phone does not respond to the power button like yours did, and a ram issue seems very unlikely tbh

My style of using I believe is the same and I had no such issues in my Cool 1 ever in an year. Was a lot better in every way. Picked it up because I loved the looks, but have lost my trust on Huawei. They really need a lot of improvement.
i am having the same issues as the OP (Although i don't know what he means by "going to the SC")
the phone just goes through moments of extreme lag for about 10-30 seconds, sometimes longer, and it makes the phone COMPLETELY unusable during those times. it happens at least once every other day or so, sometimes several times a day, and sometimes it only lasts about 10 seconds, although on a few occasions, it has lasted several minutes, the phone will "attempt" to respond to inputs, but it gets nowhere quick, opening apps i did not click on, closing apps that weren't open, black-screening, half-screening (app on half the screen), etc.. sometimes i have to just power cycle..
i have the exact same feeling as the OP in that i want to sell the phone. (although i type much better, i'll assume english is a second language for him/her)
i like EMUI a lot.. although i think i want a galaxy s8/s9 now.

Since yours is the us variant, I'm assuming you've got 3 gb of ram instead of 4 gb, in which case a ram issue seems much more likely.
Not much of an issue actually, just that you probably had lots of apps open at the same time, leading to almost full ram (so the system starts closing background and even foreground apps if needed, leading to the strange behaviour you noticed).
Just remember to close apps you don't use and you'll be fine

It's 2018 and I think the OP and I know how smartphones work. I am coming from a phone with 2GB RAM and it has no such issues, no matter how many apps and/or games are open. Google explicitly states that closing background apps is unnecessary, and I should think EMUI offers an improvement over stock Android, not a detrimental experience. However, if you are correct and it is the RAM, it is not acceptable and needs to be fixed or I'm buying a new phone from a different company. In today's world, phones will open links to Chrome and from Chrome open reddit, xda app, pinterest, link to Facebook, share to Twitter, etc etc.. every time I click on a button I should not be having to back track to make sure I only have a certain amount of apps open. Nougat limits max open apps to 20 BTW, marshmallow it was 30.. But RAM management CPU management should be better. If it's of any interest, my reported "free" ram always stays at or above 1-1.5GB so I don't think its ram.. CPU or software problem, possibly.. But my Temps are good as well. Yes it's the 3GB version
Just a quick thought of something you could check (I also have the US 3GB version and was experiencing the same issue). Open up Settings > Battery, and other the "Other" section click "Consumption". See if there's any apps there that are keeping the phone awake and preventing it from sleeping. I would get constant lag after only a few hours of use, and it was intermittent just like you're experiencing. I was about to send the phone back, but checked this setting first. Turns out, the CNN app was running the CPU at nearly 100% for hours on end and preventing the phone from deep sleeping. Once I uninstalled that app, I haven't had issues since then. Could be something similar, just a thought. YMMV.
And by the way, it's NOT the ram. 3GB is plenty. You can see how much is being used on the app select screen, and I've never used more than 1.5 with a ton of apps in the background.
Let me help you there guys....i got the US variant too and has these freezing and lags all over the place, what i discover and did was:
1- Not all the apps works well with the phone hardware(they told me that somewhere) so try to test the apps you put on the phone.
2-Delete all the unnecessary apps from emui, that will give you less lag.
3-Check the battery consuming apps like the guy said and if you want turn on the close apps on screen lock.
Now after all of these my phone have been moving better but the problem isnt the ram, is the software so wait a little more so they can fix this cause is really a good value phone
It has to be the RAM management. Huawei must have optimized the software for 4GB, and then released a US 3GB version without changing anything, so it's screwed up even though phone is showing lots of free RAM.
Wao man thats the best explanation for this problem thanks man
It isn't and never was a RAM thing. Android's memory management essentially force closes apps (but shows them in recents) if it needs more memory. Note there is no work involved in that and you'd never know it until you switch apps and it has to reload, shows logo, etc. Amazing how non-solutions we're brought up multiple times and even thanked. Insert that's-not-how-any-of-this-works meme.

Well, yeah, ram issues nowadays should not be present, but I do speak on a basis, I have experienced bad performance and foreground apps getting killed on a nexus 5, which has 2 gb of ram and stock android. I have no idea what's emui's ram management policy, but on a scale, this would be the least likely cause for sure
