Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
Related
I have my phone running 99.6% of the time in spare parts and it shows android system as the culprit holding a partial wakelock.
so my question is, how do i fix this? i've tried a factory reset three times, am updated to 1.21 ota and have slowly started to reintegrate apps but it always starts again and always after a different app.
i'm getting pretty frustrated anyone got any ideas?
UPDATE In my case it was network time abusing wireless location service that was causing the problem and hence the reason a factory reset didnt solve it, i switched off network time and voila!
just to clarify, no live wallpapers, and phone is in airplane mode to avoid any data usage drainig the battery.
i have got beautiful widgets homescreen small clock and pure cal widget installed at the moment but even when i uninstall them it doesnt fix it, also im running launcher pro 0.4.2 but also had the problem when i reverted to sense.
and i have read every other thread here about battery life that i could find but no-one seems to have this problemo
anyone with any advice on why my phone wont sleep?
A long shot, but go in to Mobile Settings and untick Enable always-on mobile data.

ok cool, giving that i try now but i had been leaving it in airplane mode to try and take the vagaries of data out of the equation.
this started about a week ago and i really noticed it when i was in a 6 hour long meeting and my battery basically draines 60% even though the phone was in airplane mode
ok tried that but with my phone just factory reset, airplane mode and no apps installed other than spare parts it's showing running 94.1 % of the time and all of it is android system.
that cant be right
i have restored data, maybe i shouldnt restore data either but that just seems plain crazy
Re: Android system - partial wake lock
What exact foreground and background processes/services do you have running when this is happening, any idea?
Apps like System Panel can show you them and some useful other details. That is certainly too high.

ok right now there is
com.android.syncml.service
sense
market
messages
people
rss reader
syncml provider
sys panel
touch input
updater
and then a load of inactive cached applications
do you see anything unusual there?
ok so i downloaded system app and killed all apps except excluded and sytem apps and my running usage has gone down, now thats no suprise in and of itself but now i need to see if it stays down.
i've just checked again and the percentage is still going down, so it's either an inactive app which i didnt list ( is that even possible if its inactive) or one of the items i listed above.
has anyone got any thoughts.
What do the logs say upon going to standby? (Use aLogcat to watch/save system log).
I had same problem I tried the turning off network always on to off, didn't change anything. the thing that worked for me was turning off my flickr account!? For some reason it kept my calendar awake so keeping system from sleeping, don't ask me why as I can't figure it out, though since doing this I'm now getting up to 2 days of average use from the battery. Also I've done the usual of reducing the different accounts sync timings etc.
Have you typed *#*#4636#*#* into the phone key pad to look at what is happening? This can give valuable info on what's draining the battery.

I have the same problem as OP since the latest update. The *#*#4636#*#* code is not helping in this case. The partial wake lock is displayed as Android System - which doesn't tell me anything.
I read something about the Calendar issues but I am unable to stop the calendar in running processes.
How did you solve your problem?

Ok i seem to have had some luck since last night though i'm not sure of the exact reason.
i did as th3 said and downloaded system monitor and then killed all background active and inactive tasks and that seems to have solved the problem. I have no idea why that would be the case though and i am watching it carefully to see if it stays fixed.
i dont have a flickr account setup

Djet, I installed alogcat and have found all references to wakelock, rather than post the entire log
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'NetworkLocation Check Location' activated (minState=0)
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'NetworkLocation Check Location' activated (minState=0)

D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: FULL_WAKE_LOCK 'keyguard'ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP activated (minState=3)
there are also some entries in red like this one
E/vold ( 53): Unable to lookup media '/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001'
and a load of errors to do with global search etc but this is all pretty much gobbledegook to me, what am i looking for?
thanks
ok so based on that log i have switched of the use wireless networks to find my location (not gps i hardly ever use that anyway) and now the running % is dropping fast.
i will keep you posted as to whether it keeps coming down or not.
it is going to be an enormous bummer if i cant use wireless location, thats one of a smartphones greatest powers, why would this suddenly start happening now ( started about a week before the ota update) and continues even when i factory reset.

I suppose it's not the feature itself guilty but the applications using it. I had the same issue with battery running out because of Location service wake locks. It turned out one of the Locale app plugins was abusing this service. Having it uninstalled battery run became normal.

Re: Android system - partial wake lock
There are a many app settings that drain battery and the stock setup is nothing I am fond of. Location/locale was one of them for me, calendar, network time and widget/app syncs being the others. A non-stock app causing such problems was NetCounter.
Calendar was fixed by killing it and restarting it. It's a known bug for many.
If many widgets are running sync very often, then you can imagine battery draining fast.

th3 you are legend, it was network time, i switched that off and all is now well in the world. cheers dude
Good find. I had the thing off anyway, but it is good to know.
I am having a sleep issue that I can pinpoint down to one app causing it. I have a Rhod400 and sleep mode is set to 1. It sleeps fine most of the time, but when I run Slacker Radio at all even after insuring it is closed with "advanced task killer" and looking in "services" I'm not sure the phone goes to sleep, because all the LED does is a very fast flash from orange to green to orange... over and over again.
Is that some type of warning message built into the LED troubleshooting of sleep mode, or is the phone trying to go to sleep and then waking itself backup immediately afterwards? Only way to fix this is to reboot XDAndroid.
Anyone else use Slacker Radio and have the same problem or use another app that causes this same symptom?
I use SystemPanelLite to close apps, shouldn't really make a difference on which app you use tho.
Assuming the apps are closed, you should be fine.
But yes, based on your description the phone is going in and out of sleep very quickly... Never experienced the issue myself, but I don't use this app either.
If you cannot recreate the issue on a clean Android installation, I'd definitely say it's the app's fault.
I saw that on one boot too, but I never investigated to see which app caused it.
I had my phone sleep all night and when I woke it up 8 hours later it looked like it was still 100%. But later, after doing some browsing and such, it doesn't go to sleep at all, LED stays orange. I was using wifi and turned that off, but it still isn't going to sleep now. So definitely, there are a bunch of possible situations that prevent the phone from going back to sleep...
I've definitely seen this before as well, where the LED will stay orange, flash to green, and then immediately become orange again, and I've never used Slacker Radio before. Location was disabled, and I went through and killed all non-ordinary processes, and the problem remained until reboot.
There are definitely some possible situations still lurking that prevent sleep. The fact that it's reproducible with Slacker Radio could possibly be helpful to some devs?
I have this both issues too. Flashing green and orange light appeared after playing some 3D games, browsing with wifi and in some random situations. Sometimes i have one another probelem. After start i wait for green light and when this light appear, i can't wake up the phone.
I'm using advanced task killer, but i think that isn't the problem. I have RHOD100 .
I've been constantly battling sleep issues. I am on PRI/NV 1.77 and latest radio. I tried downgrading to 1.77 just recently to see if it would fix it and it hasn't, but I'm staying put.
Running latest MIUI and Savage 1.6 kernel.
Spare parts had been showing on average 50% running time even though my screen on time would be something like 5%. I had read that ideally these ratios should match, since it means your phone is properly sleeping.
Spare parts shows paltry wake locks of just a few seconds or minutes for Android System as the top app. I've killed all my widgets and even tried airplane mode and don't notice too much of a drop. After getting rid of all updating widgets (minimal text and the MIUI cal widget) and stopping google calendar sync I'm currently at 30% running vs 5% screen on. I've basically got everything that would run in the BG disabled -- set cpu, system monitor, etc. Is this a "good ratio"? Any other ideas on debugging what seems to be an obvious wake lock? I've looked at logcat and don't see a thing that looks interesting, hardly any activity. Am I just being crazy or does it seem like I still have a wake lock?
Thanks for reading
If you've constantly been battling sleep issues, I would start looking at rogue apps that may be causing Android System processes to act up.
For instance:
I was battling a sleep issue with before knowing about PRI 1.90 causing it. Went so far as to reinstall my ROM wipe wipe and wipe some more before finally figuring it out.
In another instance I was battling sleep issues because of HTC's Facebook for HTC Sense. It was causing constant sync and I didn't notice because the sync icon would eventually go away, even if it took around half an hour.
One more instance, constantly changing governors with SetCPU was causing Android System process to use up a lot of CPU and my phone would become sluggish, and only after opening SetCPU and closing it again would my phone return to normal.
I would definitely start out by figuring out what apps you may have running at all times that aren't native to Android, then go from there. It sucks but once you figure it out, good times!

Thanks for the reply.
So, this is a bad ratio then, i'm not nuts?
I kill EVERYTHING then sleep and i'm still seeing the issues. Is there some more fool proof way I can guarantee nothing is running before sleeping? My guess would be something syncing more than it should have. Should I try toggling everything app's sync off and then sleeping?
Ok, turned off sync, slept and the top UID was 10018, which on my phone linked back to Google Service Framework. I'm clearing data, turning off sync and watching again to see if it has issues.

Interesting, I had that UID 10018 problem before and I never figured it out. It maybe Google Talk, Gmail, or even the Calendar. You may have to try clearing caches of one or all three to really see.
Cleared data, sleeping didn't improve. I slept with sync off after clearing data...i'm at a loss. I have next to nothing starting up. The only thing I can think is that Spare parts is reporting wrong information. You'd think it would be fairly easy to determine why the phone is not sleeping. If i don't even have sync turned on and it's still not sleeping as much as I feel it should be, I'm at a bit of a loss :/

I'm not sure how to get to that in MIUI, in battery settings i jut see my minutes since unplugged. No Awake time.
What's a good ratio for awake/screen on? I really wouldn't want my awake time to be more than %120 of the screen on time. This can change if you regularly use the phone while the screen is off (music playing, wifi stuff, etc). At least, I'm pretty sure having the wifi on will increase your awake time.

That's just how it is for all AOSP kernel using roms. Their wifi sleep mode is absolutely terrible. On the plus side, it seems as though it doesn't use an absurd amount of battery to keep the wifi on.
my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

My Defy was lagging until I rooted and installed SetVSel. Now its running as breeze with Stock Indian Froyo.
stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.
lag on defy
with rootunistaller i`ve frozen skype and yahoo and i haven`t had any lag since. If i want 2 use them "defrost" and when i`m finished i just "freeze" back the app

Easy as that...
Lag on defy
Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???
thanks a lot guys for ur replies!!
but the thing is my phone has become even slower!!
when i first switch on the phone i have around 240MB free RAM but just after an hour everything becomes too slow, even opening of the menu! and after 2-3 hours of usage it keeps on reducing and finally reaches as low as 40MB .....
what could be causing this??
i have android assistant by which i clear cache, ram still it doesnt help....
Is anybody else having issues with their ET going to sleep and you have to pull the battery to get it come back up? I thought it might have been my setcpu settings. So I cleared them and uninstalled it. I tried the midnight rom and the starburst rom. I tried the stable and exp LosKernel. None of these got rid of this issue for me. Randomly through out the day I can try to wake the phone up to use it and nothing happens. After a minute or two I have to pull the battery. I am currently testing the stock kernel.
Thats weird, the only time that happened to me was when i had setcpu, and i tried putting "screen off" value to 200/200.
You should install setcpu again, and make screen off value 500/500, and if you dont have the issue, then try making the value 200/500, if you dont have the issue at this value, then leave it as is.

I agree it is weird and I am not sure why it is happening. If it stays okay with the stock kernel then I may wipe and try the viperrom.
Yep happened twice the other day... Im on stock rom with lost kernel..roooted i put setcpu to 200/1200 after waking my screen for a minute used google came back 3 min later and phone was either off or wouldnt wake .. I had to pull battery twice.
I setcpu up to 1200/1200 never happened again.
This is a nice phone but very touchy.. Seems alot weird things goin on for some Et users.
Worst of all for this phone is Los or just weak /radio signal in general ..which is a samsung issue.

Why people still insist on screen off profiles amazes me. When you hit the power button to wake it - the phone is stuck at 200MHz, you do realize this? If snything else is going on while it's stuck at 200 or SetCPU doesn't sample the phones state fast enough, it never gets out of 200MHz and locks up. Just like any other processor does when you overload it.
All the background processes going on even when the screen is off and somebody thinks setting the CPU max to 200MHz is a good idea? That's just asking for it. Not to mention the screen off profile is known to cause this issue. Notice how Virtuous, Viper, Cyanogen, and many other developers don't use one in their native OC daemons? There's a reason why. The phone sleeps just fine without it, just let it do it's thing.
Don't use offscreen profiles (the kernel is smart enough) and avoid using task killers, as those are likely to be the second leading issue.
I am having the issue even with setcpu uninstalled. I still have not found out what is causing it.

Just wanted to throw this out there: beware mislabeling this problem. The setcpu issue causing the phone the permanently lock up and require a bat pull is one issue, yes; slow screen wake up is a different issue. Sometimes if you hit the power button, the screen will not wake up on the first try. If you wait a few seconds and push in the button again for a second or so, the screen almost always will come after. Coming from a mo-pho, I actually had the stupid no-wake problem requiring bat pulls, so I'm extremely paranoid about by e4gt doing this -- but it really has been good about eventually waking up every single time...just try my instructions and see if it works for you, too.
Again, though -- setcpu issues may be a different problem entirely.
did you reinstall a rom and try it again or did you simply just unistall setcpu and try it. I say this because I had an issue when testing setcpu and my system still kept my cpu setting even after I unistalled the app. I had to reinstall the rom after wiping to get it to run properly again.
I think I have found the issue. I did a factory reset and installed the rom but I am getting an error now that is basically saying it can't read the internal storage card. So I think there are some actual hardware issues going on that need to be looked at by sprint.
how often has the sod been happening? I think i got it yesterday, but not sure.
Do you use setcpu?

This thread seems a little slow- has there been a solution found or are we isolated cases?
I reflashed the phone back to rooted stock and then flashed Blazer 4.1.
Got 2 SODs in the past week- one just a few minutes ago.
I tried calling the phone from another line, it rings but the screen is black and thus I couldn't answer it.
Power button and vol buttons work fine.
I had to powerdown and reboot.
Getting kinda frustating.
