I am having a sleep issue that I can pinpoint down to one app causing it. I have a Rhod400 and sleep mode is set to 1. It sleeps fine most of the time, but when I run Slacker Radio at all even after insuring it is closed with "advanced task killer" and looking in "services" I'm not sure the phone goes to sleep, because all the LED does is a very fast flash from orange to green to orange... over and over again.
Is that some type of warning message built into the LED troubleshooting of sleep mode, or is the phone trying to go to sleep and then waking itself backup immediately afterwards? Only way to fix this is to reboot XDAndroid.
Anyone else use Slacker Radio and have the same problem or use another app that causes this same symptom?
I use SystemPanelLite to close apps, shouldn't really make a difference on which app you use tho.
Assuming the apps are closed, you should be fine.
But yes, based on your description the phone is going in and out of sleep very quickly... Never experienced the issue myself, but I don't use this app either.
If you cannot recreate the issue on a clean Android installation, I'd definitely say it's the app's fault.
I saw that on one boot too, but I never investigated to see which app caused it.
I had my phone sleep all night and when I woke it up 8 hours later it looked like it was still 100%. But later, after doing some browsing and such, it doesn't go to sleep at all, LED stays orange. I was using wifi and turned that off, but it still isn't going to sleep now. So definitely, there are a bunch of possible situations that prevent the phone from going back to sleep...
I've definitely seen this before as well, where the LED will stay orange, flash to green, and then immediately become orange again, and I've never used Slacker Radio before. Location was disabled, and I went through and killed all non-ordinary processes, and the problem remained until reboot.
There are definitely some possible situations still lurking that prevent sleep. The fact that it's reproducible with Slacker Radio could possibly be helpful to some devs?
I have this both issues too. Flashing green and orange light appeared after playing some 3D games, browsing with wifi and in some random situations. Sometimes i have one another probelem. After start i wait for green light and when this light appear, i can't wake up the phone.
I'm using advanced task killer, but i think that isn't the problem. I have RHOD100 .

I searched for Sleep Mode and GPS problems, and of course since those are very common words in most posts, I was having a hard time actually finding if anyone else has my problem.
I am running the most current kernel of FRX03. I have a sprint Rhod400. This problem pre-dates the current kernel, and I am not sure how long it has gone on, because I was having a lot more issues with sleep mode back in the earlier kernels anyway, as I think all people were. I am running with sleep mode set to 1.
Whenever I start a GPS program, usually it is foursquare, when I kill all the apps including foursquare using Advanced Task Killer, the phone will not go back to sleep. I have also looked at the "running services" setting and nothing is running besides Android. It seems to me the GPS stays active even though the GPS icon and all hints that it is actually running ceases to be found. I am guessing this is causing the phone not to go back to sleep. I have not really tested it out with navigation or maps to see if it happens there also, but if my memory serves me right it does.
Any suggestions on possible fixes?
Disable GPS. It's a known bug, which has already been filed on the bugtracker.
If GPS is enabled, phone will not sleep - and I don't mean enabled in that there's the GPS icon in your notification bar, I mean enabled (checked) in Location & Security. Uncheck it there, and the phone will sleep.
This is all interesting, because my RHOD400 seems to sleep just fine (much of the time) with GPS enabled!

Enable GPS, then open an app that uses it. Leave GPS enabled, but close the app. Now try to put your phone to sleep .
I've definitely seen intermittent issues with sleep and GPS. Not sure if it's every time, but I noticed when the phone doesn't sleep, I disable GPS in loc&sec and it'll go to sleep.
The only other serious sleep-related problems I've had is with rogue apps stealing processor cycles and keeping the phone awake.
I'm running NAND were pm.sleepmode = 1.
Yesterday I left my GPS enabled and I seemed to be getting better battery life? Maybe it is just a fluke... But you never know!
I will try it on my other phone running HARET.

Well better battery life is probably related to usage.
However, that would be interesting if on NAND the GPS no sleep bug is non-existent...
I honestly haven't tested it in a while. No one has specifically looked at fixing it. I guess it's possible a commit happened to fix it - just usually doesn't work like that .
I use the 11/22/10 XDAndroid build from the .cab and the bug is present. LED doesn't turn from orange to green until I turn off GPS in settings and turn off the screen.
He probably thought that it was sleeping because the screen turned off (I used to think the same thing).

No I knew it wasn't sleeping. I know the purpose of the LED being on always(sleep mode debugging). I was just trying to figure out why, and if there was a fix, which there isn't. In the earlier version of XDAndroid builds it was more than just GPS that was causing sleep issues, so back then I didn't think much of it not going to sleep, as I couldn't get more than about 4 hours of battery life out of those builds anyway. Now I am getting at least 12 with heavy usage and way more than that with light usage. So things have improved indeed.

Indeed! So that is the fix - disable GPS. It sucks, but it's on the punchlist of things to fix. Unfortunately I don't know of anyone looking at it specifically at the moment, but I'm sure it'll get addressed.
Hi all, just visiting from the gnex forums. My wife has a desire running the official gingerbread rom. She has a recurring problem whereby she'll power off the phone and it appears to shut down but will still have a grey tint like the screen is still slightly lit. Last night from a full battery it had permanent screen on in the battery stats and was near empty in the morning showing a constant drain all through the night. Has anyone had this issue?, is it related to the gingerbread update or is it just a rogue app??
I've attached an image of the battery stats with the night period being the steep drop on the right...
Any tips or advise is greatly appreciated....
Probably a rogue app. Search for Better Battery Stats app here on XDA to help you see what's keeping it awake.
Furthermore, try disabling fastboot from settings, don't remember which settings, but it should be in there somewhere.
Thanks for the replies. I've got that better battery stats app and just need to read up a bit on how to use it then I'll give it a go tonight. From my searches I found multiple things suggesting it could be an app but it seemed odd to me that it was preventing the phone from powering off and not just preventing it from sleeping.
Regarding the fast boot option I've just found that and it was turned on - what is this option for and why could it cause this problem then? ....
On Better Battery Stats, I usually check Partial Wakelocks - Since Unplugged. Most processes should be below 1% from what I understand. But it will depend on how long you are using a certain app. If you see a process that's been running for so long but you've just used the app related to it for a relative short period of time, then you check that particular app. Maybe the sync option is too frequent or it's just really poorly coded app.
If it appears that a valid android process is the one eating the battery, then an app is probably keeping it awake and you may need to dig a little deeper to figure out what app is causing that.
Regarding the fast boot option, all I know is that it's a feature to reboot the phone without going through the main HTC logo animation. So it's really like rebooting the phone without actually killing the background processes. (Not sure about it though maybe someone can explain this.)
Basically, with the Fastboot option the phone never REALLY turns off, it's a little bit like it's on hibernate, that's why it can boot a lot quicker, as it skips the bootloader and goes straight to booting the system.
Thanks guys. With the fast boot turned off it didn't do it last night so I'll try with fast boot turned on tonight and see what happens - try to confirm what's happening......
Many thanks for your help!
I turned fast boot on again yesterday and the fault occurred again overnight. Went from 100% battery to 55% overnight. Pictures of the stats for useage during this period are attached.
Anyone know what this alarm manager and sleep broadcast are?

Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
I was wondering if anyone else was seeing this issue or knew what was causing it. My phone has for the longest time, been doing almost a hot boot on it's own, where I will notice the phone is at my desk, I see it come on by itself, menu and back buttons lit, and it looks like it reloads all the os. No errors, or crash errors, just on it's own. I have nothing stock uninstalled (everything on the phone is stock, rom included), did have some disabled via TB, but to test I allowed all services/apps to load as when I got the phone, still does the same thing, like every other day. I have the latest OTA, rooted, with the freeza update for LI3, running apex launcher pro and of course some apps/widgets like everyone else. This happens no matter what, but always on it's own. I have a widget that shows memory usage, and I'll have sometimes 300mb free, and once this "hot boot" the phone does, i'll be back at over 1.2 gb free, so I know it's reloading everything on the phone. is there any way of figuring out what is causing this, cause I know this isn't normal behavior. Any help would be great!
so I think I found the answer.. Via WIFI settings I had enabled under Advanced: Keep WIFI on during sleep, NEVER (increases data usage)... Of course when you'd then try to use your phone after some time, you'd notice it switch radios from 3/4G to WIFI, and sometimes it would take a few seconds to do that. When I had that option enabled the OS would reset itself after about a day of use, as I described above, not a full restart, no crash/force close errors, you'd just see the phone come on, and basically everything reloading.. After trouble shooting whether it was an app or something causing this, it was, I believe, the WIFI setting, since I changed it to keeping WIFI on "always" during sleep, in that advanced setting, the phone has not done the issue described. Going on 79 hours with no issues, which is the longest I've seen since noticing this problem.. So hopefully in the future if this happens to others, this method might be what was the problem/cure..
I always keep wifi on.. it seems to save a lot more power than 3g and its clearly faster =p.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
This has been bugging me for a while and im not sure if its a universal issue or just me,
When they updated the HOX from 4.0.3 to 4.1.1 they introduced the power saving mode, which one of the features involves shutting down the 3G radio when the screen is off and turning it on periodically to for email/whatsapp/facebook/whatever...
So all push notification only work periodically every X minutes instead of being almost instantaneous.
No problem, we turn off power saving mode and its suppose to be disable leaving the 3G radio operational at all times, no ?
Well... no. apparently its a problem im encountering in all sense roms, they all have the same issue, the 3G power saving is still on even if i turn off power saving mode,
Anyone else experiences this ?
If I remember correctly, basically our phones have 3 states: awake/active (your using it), a sort of light sleep, and after some time of not using sleep. I believe that when it goes to sleep the phone will not reconnect to data to update unless the app tells the phones to come out of the 3rd stage, sleep. So really it all depends on how often you have your apps set to update. If you believe you're apps are set correctly and your phone should be waking to update, you can get an app from the play store like gsam and you will want to look for anything that says wake locks. An app that wake locks is an app that is bringing your phone out of sleep to update and so forth. I would start with those things to see if your apps are behaving as they should.
