Does using GPS use data? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Does GPS use up your data? If so, does it use alot?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app

No but an app like waze will. Gps is free because taxes.

Yes it does use data for many different small details. No not much at all. Let's put it this way it takes us about 4 hours and 15 mins to get between home and cedar point when we went this summer and I think 50 MBS or less was used.

I think you are confused. GPS itself does not require data, however Google navigation does. So, while you are driving down the road the phone uses GPS to know where it is, and data to download relevant maps and exit info.

It is not the same thing. You stated that GPS uses small amounts of data, which is incorrect. GPS does not use data.

I am sure he is, but he asked about GPS.

In either case, @GrayTheWolf is technically correct, and several posts provide the OP the correct information that they will need.
Bottom line: Answer = No - GPS does not use data, but a navigation app will.

Yea but the GPS alone is worthless... This is kind of a dumb argument... GPS on Facebook still requires data... Using technicalities is going to cause more confusion... Am I the only sane one here who isn't just trying to argue? The op needs to know that yes he will be using data as any feature I can think of the use of GPS uses data... You can download the Google navigator map data for a user-selectable region beforehand on WiFi and then run solely off of GPS while on the road.
Boom, no data usage.

Not attempting to argue, just trying to provide the correct answer. The OP didn't specify what they were doing with GPS, it's usually not a great idea to assume. But, with all of these posts, I'm sure the OP has the answer they need, so I'm finished with this thread. If I have caused any confusion, please accept my apologies.

GPS does not use data even for some navigation. Case in point....I have the TOMTOM Navigation app installed on my phone. All maps are downloaded to my phone and I can use this 24/7 without any data being used. So, GPS does not use data. It is completely based on the APP utilizing the GPS

Yes, you are - with certain apps, the maps are pre-downloaded to the device, and saved locally, so while using the app, it is only using the GPS signal currently, because the maps were already downloaded and saved. Yes, I understand that used data to do that, but after its done, it is not constantly using data live.

Best Nav App?

I'm over Google Navigation. The last few updates have ruined it. It won't warn you when your turn is coming, it won't reroute almost ever, and it wants to send me halfway around the city to get somewhere ten minutes away. So, with that rant out of the way, what's the best third party Nav app?

I use Locus Pro, its more detailed than Google maps ans has a lot of different features including navigation. It works really well for me. There is also a free version although I paid for the pro version

I like Waze, but with my current ROM, it's crashing. But now Google Maps is working well again. Their new voice sounds great and gives plenty of early warning prompts. I think part of my previous problems were related to bad GPS performance from my ROM.

Have sprint locate via MSID or serial number. unless if the phone is off it won't work. you can only have track them a phone that is on your account, but since its your phone it won't be a problem.
If your still signed in to your account on the phone. Go to the play store on a PC and install "plan b" to the lost phone. Obviously if the phone has been wiped this won't work.

Data question

Hi guys,
I'm actually on CM10. I've been going over my data limit which is 500mb since 2 months. I'm still trying to figure out why, at work my data is off, I barely have receptions, sometimes I turn it on when I'm outside, at home I'm always on Wi Fi. Today I have lik 75mb left and there's like 2 weeks left to the month. I'm using GoWeather/Tapatalk/Facebook/Instagrams as my main programs. Any idea what could drain so much data? Thank you
Hum have u tried using an app called droidwall in the market so u can make sure no random app is sucking your data? I use it and only give access to my most used apps. Btw if u decide on using u need to disable the limit on your data in data usage so the app can sucefully block the apps internet usage. Hope this helps.

Go to Google Settings app, then go to location then turn off access location. Make sure Location Services is OFF as well.
Do you happen to use Google Now? For some reason, its location implementation makes it use Google Maps although you the user have never opened the app itself. I've had this problem myself too and I ended up disabling Google Now

Go into Map settings>Location settings and turn off Resort grin this device and Enable Location History. This should solve your problem.
I had same problem I solved by searching on google. The trick is to disable and factory reinstall it.
When you go in app manager then map click Disable it will the propose you to install factory version say yes and renable it then boot just in case and Map won't consume the battery.
It worked for me and alot of other people
I don't why it do this some kind of bug in map that is delivered with phone but resting solve it.

T-Mobile knows more than you think...

Got a notification today telling me my device health was good, and I had to check performance and this popped up:
I rooted 2 days ago and stayed stock. Anyone know how they know this?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
When your phone is rooted, it knows, and so do the apps. That's why you cannot install isis wallet if your phone is rooted. In the about section in settings, it says if the device is rooted. If it says modified then it is rooted and any app can probably see that. Doesn't mean that tmobile knows it is, but the app does, and it may, or may not report this back to them.

Actually, you granted them access by accepting the permissions. Thats why i read that stuff. And being a developer, i can usually figure out what actions fall under the required permissions too.

They went commercial, now are a official corporation. They are looking to make that money, eventually. With features like a CM account, privacy guard, secure messaging they were getting ready for it. None of those are attractive though.

it seems more likely the purchase fees will be for the added features. Allcast is the perfect example. It's a CM app on the app store that has a time limit unless you pay money. That's their future. I can easily imagine a CM rom that is basically AOSP, and a collection of appstore apps that you have to pay money for to get the "Full CM experience". Of course, if you buy a CM phone (like the oppo n1), you'd get all those for free.
Or they just collect your data and sell it on their own kinda like Google
