[Q] Why is google map taking up so much battery? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I Don't use my maps at all and i turned off all the setting as you can see and i dont have GPS on. so can anyone maybe take a guess why its take so much battery and its never under active apps. and i posted the setting in the pics any suggestions? I try to turn off my data when im not using it?

+bump
Am having the same issue with my S4. Didn't open the Google Maps app all day and yet it uses close to 40% of the battery.

The S4 battery life sucks! This is with pretty much No use at work today had On the Job Training so couldn't use my phone much... Already having T-mobile senting me another s4 if it doesn't get better switching to the HTC One

Go to Google Settings app, then go to location then turn off access location. Make sure Location Services is OFF as well.

Do you happen to use Google Now? For some reason, its location implementation makes it use Google Maps although you the user have never opened the app itself. I've had this problem myself too and I ended up disabling Google Now

I found this or clearing the cache would stop maps from wake locking.

what is that a app?

Go into Map settings>Location settings and turn off Resort grin this device and Enable Location History. This should solve your problem.

I had same problem I solved by searching on google. The trick is to disable and factory reinstall it.
When you go in app manager then map click Disable it will the propose you to install factory version say yes and renable it then boot just in case and Map won't consume the battery.
It worked for me and alot of other people
I don't why it do this some kind of bug in map that is delivered with phone but resting solve it.

I just did that, but do I need to update to the latest maps though? I'm guessing No, cuz the latest update has people complaining about the battery drain.

Disabling Apps ? and Caution

I like the new feature of ICS that allows you to disable apps. I used it immediately to remove the VZW bloatware that was pre installed (back up assistant).
But I may of taken it a step too far. I disabled the default calculator app ( just happen to like realcalc better). When I did that it screwed up my calendar. All of my events were MIA. Luckily I caught it before I did anything else and couldn't pinpoint the problem. - undisabled the calculator and every thing went back to normal.
So, like it says in the warning use caution when disabling system apps. And hopefully my little boo boo helps some one else out.
Anyone else disable a app and notice any strange or unexpected results???

I disabled Books, Vz backup, and phone (I'm using another dialer). So far no issues.
I also used autostarts to keep a few other apps from starting automatically all the time.

Talk back randomly starts

Hey guys, my galaxy nexus has a weird problem. Randomly the talk back feature found in the accessibility settings starts.
I am currently running, he AOKP Maguro milestone 2 ROM. Anyone know how to fix this?
Or if someone could tell me how to remove the feature permanently I wouldn't mind either. I never use it lol. I know there are some tools around and I'll search, bit if anyone can recommend a tool it would be really appreciated.
Thanks guys

[Q] backing up cached Google music

I've been flashing ROMs for a while but have not been able to figure out how to back up my Google music so o don't lose it on a clean flash.
I'm thinking if I go to /data/data/com.Google.music/files and move it to my SD card that I could flash and move it back afterwards. Can someone confirm this for me?

As far as I can tell; anything you manually chose to save offline should get restored* when restoring app with data through Titanium. As for the regularly cached after playing, haven't seen a way.
-edit
*Automatically re downloads for offline use. Not quite "restored."

Yeah, I went 10gb over my 5gb plan because of re-download and not monitoring it close enough.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yeah, wish there was a way to set it to download only on WiFi but also force it over mobile if one chose to. At least one option exists, even if it is a pain to manually switch when needed. Here's hoping for such a setting in a future update..

Whats the difference between clicking a Force mobile sync and Changing the Setting to sync on both anyway ?
Oh come on!

I meant that you have the ability to have it only download over WiFi so mobile data doesn't get used unexpectedly. Some apps have similar settings but include the ability to "force" the download on mobile. Presently, you can switch the settings on the fly to accomplish this, but it's not ideal. That's all I meant.

play services eating battery

Had my note 10.1 2014 for about 2 weeks. charged like 4 times so battery cycle is not the issue. im at 19% right now and its indicating that play services used up 48% so that means that 34% (71%*48%) was used up by play services. i have sync turned off and most google services turned off (play music, books, videos etc). i am wondering what this drain in battery may be caused by. betterbatterystats shows no apps or google services taking up battery. anyone else experience this issue?

definitely, across all my android devices (p605 and nexus 5).
the first thing i do after flashing is converting google play services to user app (either using TIB or uninstalling/reinstalling) and then greenify it. i found that using greenify to hibernate google play services as a system app won't go the full way.
im happy with that workaround, although i find google should fix this. its the same on all devices across all android versions for a couple weeks already. some are affected, some aren't.

It will only affect automatic updates. You have to open play store to trigger automatic updates, other than that no side effects.
That's good, I always manually update apps any way, I like to know what's changed, so all that battery is used for nothing? Glad I froze it

you don't freeze it, use greenify to force hibernation. that way it can be put to sleep when you're not using the device.

Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thanks for the input everyone..and although greenify seems to be a viable option, I'm trying to hold off rooting.. Never know when warranties can come in handy..not trying to pay for replacing parts etc..and battery life seems like the only reason to root so may just have to live with it until a hopeful update rolls out.

you gotta either use titanium to make it a user app (move from system) or use the donation version of greenify and install xposed framework.

**Figured out, I think**Anyone get the new Google Search?

I installed the new Google Search and the new Play Services in the hopes of getting the new always on OK GOOGLE to work, but so far no go. I know it has to be turned on from Googles side, but has anyone have it not work, then start working?
EDIT-I think I figured out how to make it work:
For those who dont have it activated yet, I think I figured out how to turn it on.
Google search>menu>Settings>Voice>OK Google detection>Menu button>Help & Feedback>scroll down and hit Audio History>Touch the plus next to See Your Audio History. At this point you should have to sign in to Google to turn on Audio History. Go back in to settings>voice and make sure Audio History is on.
After I did this the options appeared in OK Google Detection to use the hotword OK GOOGLE from any screen and from lock screen.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SEARCH 3.5.15 AND PLAY SERVICES 5.0 FOR THIS TO WORK
There's an Xposed module called Ok Google for 3rd party activities that will allow you to call out Ok Google from the home screens.

Wow,... Your in the minority, from what I've read. It hasn't been turned on yet for my account by Google. Search 3.5.15 came out today and I was hoping, but not yet. I still don't have the options yet in my settings.

Then it doesn't work as I am explaining it. Once Google turns it on for your account you can just say OK Google, anywhere including the lock screen and screen off while charging, and have it work. No need to touch anything.
Basically just like the Moto X.
I forgot to mention that my search was updated yesterday to 3.5.15, newer than what came out last week with the new always on search, but it still hasnt been turned on by Google for me.

I haven't been to these forums in a while (been bogged down with life crap), but I'm glad I came here today! This is the first I'm hearing about this. I've been envious of this feature ever since I read about the Moto X.
The options were there on my HTC One, and it's working. Now I just have to be careful not to talk about anything the NSA might be interested in! Ha ha.
