[Q] Volume keys broken, how to root? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have HTC DESIRE HD 001HT, volume keys of this device has broken, they don't work anymore. Now I want to root my device. It's running Android 2.3.3 with Sense 2.1.
Please let me know how can I root my device, during rooting I'll have to enter into the recovery mode which can't be done without the volume keys I think. Is there any other way?
I searched and found that this can be done using 'adb' or touch based recovery like 4ext or cwm touch but I'm a newbie, can you please link me to a step by step article for that?
Thanks.

You can use ADB to reboot, and you can flash a touch recovery, but if you get stuck without working ADB somehow, you'll brick.
If you still insist on rooting, you need to update your phone using your region's latest RUU. If you can't find that, make a goldcard to run any RUU. Then, Easy Ace Root Tool. All three steps are very well documented here throughout the forums, especially in the Ace Think Tank.

[Q] HELP!!! Strange situation on my G2

Thank you for droping in cause I really need your help! I made a huge mistake on it when I tried to unlock the phone.
The gfree method told that it doesn't work with radio higher than 26.03.02.xx but mine is 26.04.xx.xx. So I just did a stupid thing to found an older (official?) RUU and flashed it....
the radio has been downgraded to 26.02.15.xx(almost it) but the ship became s-on!!!!
And I tried the gfree several times on work! The former S-off method is depend on the offical rom so I thought it should not work as well...
What surprise me most is that the rom still has ROOT!! I've used clockmodrecovery to backup several times before the accident. The recovery still works however the radio cannot be flashed now and there is just S-ON!
So many words but I cannot find the point please help me, thank you
Now here is the brief situation:
1. The phone are now with an old radio. s-on and clockworkmod recovery(funny- -)
2. PC10IMG.img to flash radio failed. But by cwm recovery I can flash any rom or backup and restore any roms.
3. Before the situation I've once flashed a 4.02.17(?) radio and seems all gone right. Then I flashed a former radio as mentioned above and it comes here.
Are you sure you still have root ? Was it an official RUU you flashed ? Because all official RUUs will not have root (though you may be able to re-root, depending on the exact version).
A stock RUU/ROM will install a new hboot, and if you only had S-OFF via the eng hboot, you will lose that. Which is why everyone with S-OFF should make sure they have it via gfree.
What version of ROM are you running right now ?
This shouldn't be a new thread though, should be in an existing thread or in the Q&A forum
Thank you for your words! I flashed the RUU and found my rom is kept, just the radio downgraded and s-on...
I'm using the Q'N'D-miui rom...
Now I've tried to install new rom and I managed to install the CM6.1.1 tough the S-ON is still there, doesn't it mean I got the root? I the os I can find the superuser work correctly.
Sorry that I cannot find any similar situation in the forum and I'm new here...So I thought it can be a new thread
you might beable to just flash the spl by completing the last couple of steps ion the original g2 root process. don't quote me on this though, cuz i really don't know what i'm saying.
5. Open up terminal, type in "su" then press enter. Then without exiting type in "insmod /sdcard/wpthis-[YOURVERSION].ko" and press enter. Make sure you use the proper version of wpthis that applies to you. If you got the proper message type in "dd if=/sdcard/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18". Do not exit terminal in this step at all.
6. Exit terminal and run visionary again to make sure you're rooted.
7. Go back into terminal and type "su" then press enter, then type "sync". Wait about 10 seconds then pull the battery out.
8. Boot into recovery by holding volume down + power off until it comes up.
If it says S-OFF, you're rooted! Good job!
I'm [email protected]@ cuz I'm now using the miui rom not the origin one, which version of wpthis.ko is suitable for me?? Seems that just a mistake on it can bring me a brick...
So [rom] [guide] [kernal] [patch]...not [q]
I'm kinda confused what state your phone is in. Because if you are S-ON you wouldn't be able to flash any custom ROMs at all.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
actually you might be able to skip the first step and just flash the spl
type in "dd if=/sdcard/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18".
Good job!
....... if you have access to clockwork, someone could compile an update.zip to replace the spl......
but I'm a noob don't go on my opinion alone...... ask someone responsible for g2root to compile an update.zip for the spl IF you have access to clockwork recovery...
Yes now its s-on and still can be flashed!!
I've never heard before...
to master.peterm:
Now my rom has root... and I've tried the similar way as you said, but when I do the step it seems ok however it doesnt work as I went back into hboot it is still s-on...
I'm very much confused at this point. I know on the mt3gs, they could flash roms with s-on (but, with an eng hboot with test keys and cwm), but doesn't our RUU's all come with official hboots?
I'm not sure if once you're in cwm if it can bypass sig verifications though.
to PanCubano:
That's why I thought I should start a new thread... So strange which conflicts with the conclusion before.
s-on means the system permit no third-party flash right?? As I saw it, it's not right on my phone....backups and new cm rom can be flashed normally but seems that radio cannot be flashed..
And which method of rooting did you use before? Im assuming the rage method with the hacked eng hboot?
the irony of your name and your problem is kinda funny
to thatruth132:
my flashermaster is not this flash but adobe flash...
to PanCubano:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
just the usual root method...
First, confirm that you legitimately have root. Download terminal emulator off the market. Open it, type su and hit enter. Superuser should prompt you for permissions. Hit allow and you should see your symbol go from $ to #
If yes, start the rooting method you did from step 2. If that's not the case above, start from step 1.
Since you already were able to sucessfully root the first time around, I still "strongly" suggest you always re-read every step (especially when you get to the dd commands)
Once you finish and can sucessfully confirm S-OFF via rebooting into hboot, come back here and follow the gfree method.
Do not skip out on doing the gfree method. Just because you were able to get s-off again (if you could) it doesn't mean you're done.
Finally I use the unpermroot method to restore the phone into stock state and do the gfree instead to s-off and simunlock the phone...
Thank you all above!! Though there is still no actual explanation of this.

[Q] Not entering in Recovery MOd

Hi Friends,
Infact i am new to android so i am facing many difficulties and i read lot of posts but realy dont understand how i start playing wth android.
When i try to enter in recovery mode by shutdown and by pressing both power and down volume button but nothing happened. after releasing these buttons it directly go to nomal boot and power on.
i have htc desire, with android 2.3.3 , 8gb sd
some other problems
internal memory is very low,
what i should do to fix these issues.
i am new please tell me in detail and step by step.
thanks
is there anyone who will help me.....
Hi
The trick to enter the bootloader is to press ONLY the volume down key, then start the phone. In bootloader, you have to pick recovery, press the power button and *booom*, you're in the recovery ;-)
And for you to ask a step by step process & so forth would be a bit impossible at the moment.....[unless somebody is really willing to help you out]...There's your Search functionality...maximize it.....just as long as you know what you need to know then search will always be there for you.....most of the solutions these days are here already,,,you just need to be clever enough in providing the right keyword when you search....you can pretty much try googling for a solution as well......
When all else fails.....that's the time you ask for Help......I can somehow help you out on some queries but on my free time buddy.
Cheers...
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
What rom you running, what hboot etc... if you provide some more info it will be better to get some info...
Did you untick fastboot mode in settings?
do you have an ext partition?
I know that problem. Some ROMs (like InsertCoin) doesn't shutdown properly so they can restart very quickly. The trick is to remove the battery for about 10 seconds and then try again with Power + Vol down.

Thanks dear friend. first of all i think
"Cool3D RunnyMede v6" is ok, it have sense 3.5 and if its will not work in desire then recomend me other which you like. after learning i will try different.
When you talk about low memory, you mean for apps?
I had this problem back when I had a desire. The best solution I found for this was using a ROM with A2SD or A2SD+, which effectivley 'extends' the memory area for apps into your SD card.
Signal problems can be caused by a variety of things, but (again form my own experience) it can take a while to get a ROM, kernel, and Radio that work perfectly. That said, it shouldnt be hard to get together a set that works.
Are you rooted?
Are you looking to put a custom ROM on your phone?

It's probably best to start with rooting. There are many guides which already exist, here on XDA and outside on the big wide google. One particular method though is the one which I used, unrEVOked. It works pretty well. A good duide on the method is here.

It's a tool used for rooting many different HTC devices. It's fairly easy to use, like a one-click solution.
run revolutionary that should you s-off then flash your recovery (check my signature)...
Unrevoked is method to get root but you mentioned s-off revolutionary is the best option because alpharev is older method (0.93 hboot)

Need help with Downgrade my DHD

Hi there. I'm a new DHD user. I have installed GB with 3.12 and sense 3.0 and want to install MIUI and there is a problem. I have read a lot and I know that I must downgrade my firmware to 1.32 if I want make root. But every methods don't work. When I making downgrade with this Dovngrade v3 tool I always get $ mark what mean I don't get temporary root. I can't get into HBOOT, when I press down vol button and hold with power button phone turn on normaly. Please if you know what I'm doing wrong tell me
To start with, turn off fastboot in the power menu then follow all instructions and you shouldn't have a problem. All your answers are in the forum.
Sent from my laser emitting mammary glands.
I turned it off as first and still cant get into Bootloader/ HBOOT
Pull the battery. Then reload the battery and power on while holding volume down.

DON'T DOWNGRADE TO VERSION 1.32...that will mess your phone's bootloader. If you have read the development section of the forum, then you would have seen the Advanced Ace Hack Kit. That is the only working tool for downgrading, rooting and gaining S-OFF in your device. You don't have to do anything but read instructions and follow them....
Now I see your post there...yes u can use it with any version....just read carefully. All the information you need is in the OP (opening thread) and in the manual...

THE AAHK works. I recently downgraded rooted and installed a custom rom on a friends phone. Make sure to disable the antivirus as that will cause trouble and also make sure you read the manual.
IT DOES WORK!

The only way to root 2.3.4 is to unlock your bootloader using htcdev unlock, then use fastboot (an android sdk program) to flash a custom recovery. Once you have the recovery installed, you can flash a rom of your choosing. There are no one click options available since the inc got gingerbread. It requires a bunch of steps, but isnt all that hard. Here is a working guide if you decide to take the plunge. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258. Note that you do not need s-off to flash a rom, but you do need s-off to flash radios, hboots, and splash screens.

S-off and Downgrading HBoot

I'm wanting to sell my old espresso. I'm thinking I can get more money if I flash the CM10 unofficial port first. I'm having trouble with writing to the recovery partition. I've tried the temporary (update.zip) method for CWM, but whenever I select something suck as "wipe data/factory reset" the screen turns black and then I have to take the battery out. My recovery is the stock 2e recovery. Now, I found a .IMG CWM on a thread from someone with a similar problem, so it might work and it will stick(which are very hard to find for this device), but it requires S-Off. My problem is, I'm scared to S-Off because I can't make a nandroid backup because I don't have a recovery! (One that works). So what I'm scared of, is me attempting to S-Off, messing up (like always, even with a year experience with this kind of stuff ) and then not being able to boot back into my ROM. Right now I have an unlocked bootloader (1.02.0002) with S-On. Now, I'm looking at options for S-Off, and all I can find is alpharev. Is there any other method..? What method did you guys use? Is there ANY way to boot back into my ROM if I were to mess up? One last thing, if I downgraded my HBoot will it still be unlocked? Can I re-upgrade my HBoot to 1.02 and keep my S-Off in the process? Please explain, I'm used to nexus and Samsung devices, not HTC, so I'm not familiar with the S-On S-Off thing. Thanks guys, I wouldn't know anything if I weren't for XDA, and as always, any responses or answers will be very much appreciated. Again, I'm looking for any method BUT alpharev, but I am willing to use it if no other options.

It seems certain versions of the Clockworkmod Update.zip just turn off the screen when you press the power button. (press it again and it should come back on) You use the action button to select an option instead.
I found the problem. Apperently the power button doesnt work for selecting things. I used enter on the keypad instead and it worked just fine. You can still write to the recovery partition with root and s-on.
