I just switched from a Galaxy S3 to a Galaxy S4 and am having issues with incoming caller id. On the S3, if the number was not in my contacts, it would show up as whatever state the number is assigned to. On my new S4, it shows the number only.
The other difference I notice between the two is the display of the CID. On the S3 it's xxx-xxx-xxxx on the S4 it's xxx xxx-xxxx.
I'm using the same phone provider for both phones. In searching some of the forums, it also looks like you can get name associated to the ICID? If so, does anyone have any idea how so make that work for T-Mobile?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Tmobile caller id works fine for me. Are you paying for the service? Are you on a custom rom?

Here's a similar thread on it.

Let me clarify - the incoming caller id works. However, with the S3 it would show what STATE the phone number is registered to whereas the S4 only shows the number and no state (if the number is not in my contacts).
I'm running stock ROM.

That's just how the S4 work.
If I rooted it and put a custom ROM on it would it restore that capability as my S3 had?

This feature works on my wife's S4 on T-Mo. I've traced down the caller id displaying the state to an app called T-Mobile Name ID. My phone (HTC One) doesn't display the state either when someone calls, but it works on another HTC One that's also on T-Mobile. The difference is that Name ID app - on my phone it says it can't contact the server, whereas on the other phones the app works fine. I haven't been able to figure out why that app isn't working on mine tho... there doesn't seem to be a way to configure it or anything.

Name ID is a paid service, $3.99/mo. When I first got the GS4 and a 10 days free trial or something like that, it work but after the trial period was over it was just regular caller ID.

From what I've seen on the phones I've tested it with, even after the trial is over it will continue to give you the state from where they're calling. The paid service is for all the other info, like the name/company. When the Name ID app is disabled or non-functional, the phone doesn't give any information except for the number.

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a fix for SGS i9000 for Rogers/Fido name display. I get the name correctly on my phone while the number is ringing, however, when I answer or don't pickup the call, I just get the number.
Thank you
i don't follow...
when i miss i call i get the normal SMS from 8888 telling me that i missed a call from such and such from the phone number that phoned me
and in the phone call log, i see the little red arrow that i missed a call with the name and phone number of the contact
if it was not a contact then it just shows the phone number (which is normal of all previous cell phones i've used)
so... what exactly is not working for you?
I don't have that feature that would send me an SMS with the name and number. I just have a "Name Display and Caller number" feature. On FIDO supported phones any person that calls, even if that person is not in the contact list, his/her name would display. On my phone, SGS i9000M, Name Display works only while the phone is ringing....

that is correct
this is how it works normally on any cell phone that i've had with Fido
only displays the name when it's ringing
it doesn't save the name, it never did for any of my previous cell phones
that's only for people that are not on your contact list
And I guess the question was if there is a way to have the name not only the number in the call log after the call is completed. Is there a fix for this? Thx
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
well there is nothing to FIX because it's not broken
the "Advanced Caller ID" the one that shows you the callers name even though it is not in your contact list, is a network feature
not a phone feature
the build in phone feature will match the caller ID from the network provided number to your contact list then show you the caller name, if it's not in your contact list you will just get the number
that is standard on all phones with caller ID
the trick that the network uses, is that they tag the name of the person calling you along the caller ID number
older phones wouldn't even display the name
newer phones will show the name, but not be able to do anything with it, it just displays it that's all
the build in software on most phones are only designed to save the caller ID number, no extra stuff tagging along.
translation you will need a Developer to come up with a new software to be able to save both the caller ID + the extra strings attached
Just to confirm my old nokia n97 did save the name in missed calls.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
I see what you mean, on some phones when someone calls you and you do not have the persons contact saved the following happens:
1. Name is displayed along with the number while ringing.
2. When you look up the phone log the name is in there and when you save the contact it already has the name typed in for you.
On the Galaxy S number 2 does not happen. I dont know how to change it to make it work however, I am interested.
A new software will be required to do that, none of my previous phone had that feature
time to hire an android developer to make and app to do that
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
I have the same features with Fido and i found it to be annoying that it wouldnt show the callers name(not on my contacts) in missed calls. If its important they can call again lol.
Off-Topic:
I am about to purchase the Captivate from Rogers(finally its out...) but im with Fido, what im wondering is it possible to unlock the phone with the unlock/unfreeze guide located in the dev section. I just dont want to create a new thread for one question
PS. It didnt allow me to post the link to the guide because i just joined, sorry for the trouble lol.
I would appreciate if someone can post a fix for this issue. I'll throw in some money for a fix

If so, what build are you on?
Thanks.

Neither CNAP nor call-forwarding seem to work on my device, and no one has answered my post. I will try asking in this thread.
EDIT: Figured out the call-forwarding issue. It was related to Rogers One Number. If you use One Number, you cannot use the phone's forwarding menu.
Here is what i was able to figure out But im a noob.
Cyanogenmod has an ICS update review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,11168 (im new user it doesnt let me post link) that enables the name display.
I beleive name display was incorporated into the Nexus S rom *Ultimate ICS v 3.0" so i was trying to figure out how to make that just an update to add a name display on the stock rom. Maybe you can help?

I'm not much of a coder, but hopefully someone can helps us out!
I installed and CNAP is working on [ROM][AOSP][4.0.3] Codename Android 1.1.4.
To make sure it saves in call log you have to use dialer one or simillar app from the market.

I bought it from Virgin, but all they are all the same (Rogers, Bell, Telus, Virgin), both from a hardware perspective, as well as a software perspective.
I doubt it will work on your device if it is stock.
I disabled Name Display on my account when I had the ATRIX 4G because it would show every incoming call as PAY PHONE but I re-added it a couple of weeks ago and I haven't had any problems. It doesn't display the name of the caller however, just the number.

Then it is not working. That is Caller ID / Call Display. Name display is something completely different.
Caller ID (or Call Display): The network will display the phone number of phone calling you (unless it is a private number). Your phone will display the name of the individual if the number calling is stored in your contacts.
Name display (or CNAP): The network will display the phone number of the phone calling (unless it is a private number), as well as the name associated to that number, regardless of whether or not the information is stored in your contacts. It is network-driven, but your device needs support for it.

I initially bought Virgin Gnex but name display didnt work so i sold it. Then i got it from Fido and name display didnt work, but i kept it and figured it out.
I beleive to make it work the file Gsmconnection.java as per my previous post has to be modified. However since im not that great of a coder i wouldnt be able to figure out how to do it.
If any coders could do a quick mod to enable cnap on Galaxy nexus - then it would be beneficial for everyone.
Another issue i see is the call log. Stock call log is not storing the name display in it. You can download dialer one and it will store the numbers. But it is glitching. Sometimes it just looses the name in call log and sometimes it keeps it. I have no idea why it acts like that. But i think its related to the stock call log because everytime i start it - it erases the "name id" stored on Dialer One.
Mine is also from bell but I'm using it on Rogers... I don't know nothing about rooting or anything so this is bad news for me! Name display works great on my bold 9900 and on my iPhone 4s, I would also like it to work on my Gnex !
Regardless it's still a killer device!

So would you need to subscribe to CNAP to receive? Or would you still need to subscribe to Caller ID? I would love to drop the $8/month charge I pay for caller ID.
Is anyone having issues with their S III not displaying caller id on T-mobile?
After the bloatware subscription T Mobile Caller Id ran out it seems like most calls I receive now show no caller id info. I wonder if this a problem tied to that app, or something different.
Caller ID as in someone that's not on your contacts? Cause, that's a service you have to subscribe to I think. Otherwise...all my Gmail contacts show up when they call.
Called ID should be working fine but I believe you only get 7 days for free, I got rid of it cause I feel the app is just wasting my battery

My caller id worked 2 times tops during my 7 day trial. One came with the name and the other unknown. Do I want to subscribe? That's a no brainer.

I'm running a rooted (mostly stock) rom and the tmobile subscription caller id is not there as an option on my phone. Therefore, I have never set it up. I have, however, noticed half a dozen people or so that are in my contacts that still show up as unknown when they call. If I call them once from my phone, it appears that my phone recognizes them the next time they call. What a pain. I've heard of several people having the same or similar issues. Hope they patch this stupid bug.
NO CID on T-Mobile
Caller ID stopped for me yesterday. I am not talking about the bloatware CID w/subscription. My work cell that is most definitely in my address book, is showing as "Unknown." Strange thing about this is that while on WiFi calling, if I call my work cell 1st, it will show the contact info. Calling 1st on the cellular network does not work. I am on hold with a CSR that is really trying but no success yet. She had me pull the battery and SIM. WTF?!?!?!
Not sure if this is the best forum for this but need some help. I'm with Fido (Rogers) and unlike most providers, they actually show the name of the person calling on your phone, and also show your name and number when you call someone which is amazing since I use my phone for work.
I switched to them recently with my unlocked iPhone 4S and everything worked fine. I just upgraded to the Galaxy S3 from Fido but I noticed when calling my work desk phone which is a VoIP IP phone, it now just shows Unknown as the name, and then my number. I called our fax line which is a Bell Canada landline and it shows the same.
I did a live chat with Fido and they said that they don't have the ability from their end to not show the name and just show number and that nothing is blocked there and that it's a problem with the person I'm calling. I checked our Bell and voIP call logs and both show Unknown as the name. Bell confirmed as well no name is being sent. So she said it's probably a setting on the phone.
I put the SIM into my iPhone again and made a call and as expected my name immediately showed on the caller ID, so it's 100% the S3.
I've only had it a few days so I'm not sure if it ever worked. The only thing I ever changed was the other day I did want to block my number, so I went to phone settings, then additional settings, and then to Caller ID and changed it to "Hide number". When I was done I put it back to what I'm pretty sure it was on before which is "Network default", but I've also tried the only other option "Show number" and they all do the same thing just saying Unknown for the name.
Posted in a few other android forums but no one is replying, I assume because most cell providers don't show the name of who is calling on outbound calls, but it's definitely the galaxy that's blocking it. Not sure if this is normal, or if another ROM would help but I like the stock Galaxy interface so hate to change anything but I really need it to show my name on outbound calls since that's why I left my current provider.
Thanks so much.

What version/firmware are you running? It could be a bug with it. Network default and Show number should both work.
It's whatever came with it. Says 4.1.1 and baseband I747MVLDLK kernel version 3.0.31538866. It says the latest software is installed. How would I reset it like do I do factory data reset or would that be enough?

It's something you can try but first I would make a nandroid backup in recovery.
So suddenly today I noticed that all my calls are getting labels showing where the phone number is.
Like voicemail shows Oxnard California. Or a 610 area code shows Philadelphia.
Is this a new T Mobile feature? Is this a new feature of Android 4.3? Or is this a new feature of Carbon ROM that Im using? Or is it an unlisted feature of the Rocketdialer app I just got?
This is really cool and I can't find any documentation on this.

Turns out is is part of Rocketdialer. I just didn't see it in the app description on the play store.
It's pretty cool!
I assume the app just has a list of area codes for the entire nation and tells you the city the area code is from. But like for the voicemail number it was very specific.
It's pretty neat. And I don't think you need to use the Dialer app as your primary dialer in order to see the location notifications. It's worth a look.
